    The teaser trailer (below) focused on the God of Thunder (Chris Hemsworth) follows the similarly sentimental first look at the return of Steve Rogers (Chris Evans).

    Here Thor is shown with his daughter (India Rose Hemsworth) and then praying to his father to protect him before, presumably, doing battle with Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.) so he can return safely home to her.

    “Lend me the strength of the all-fathers so that I may fight once more, defeat one more enemy and return home to her — not as a warrior, but as warmth, to teach her not battle, but stillness, the kind I never knew,” he says.

    The Thor footage has been circulating online for days, however, having leaked from theatrical preview screenings.

    Directors Joe and Anthony Russo wrote on Instagram: “When even a god has to pray for strength.” The marks the return of RDJ to Marvel after famously played Tony Stark/Iron Man over the course of numerous MCU films. In Doomsday, however, he is playing classic villain Doctor Doom.

    Palmer has joined the cast of director Patrick Vollrath’s feature, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively. The actress, who recently starred alongside Ryan Gosling in Universal’s The Fall Guy, joins previously announced Subversion castmembers Chris Hemsworth, Lily James, Michael Peña and Joe Cole.

    THR exclusively reported last month that David Wenham (Elvis), Robert John Burke (The Last of Us) and Simone Kessell (Yellowjackets) will also appear in the movie. Vollrath (7500) helms Subversion from a script by Andrew Ferguson. Lorenzo di Bonaventura produces the project, while Stephen Shafer and Greg Cohen serve as executive producers for di Bonaventura Pictures.

    — Alicia Silverstone leads the new crime drama called “Irish Blood.” She plays Fiona, a woman who has been led to believe her father abandoned her as a child — and has carried around some heavy emotional baggage ever since. When she learns the truth is more complicated — not to mention dangerous — she heads to Ireland to investigate. The premiere of the six-part show drops Monday on Acorn TV.

    — A new one for the kiddos is the Disney Jr. series “Iron Man and his Awesome Friends,” coming to Disney+. The first 10 episodes drop Tuesday. The show follows besties and fellow geniuses, Tony Stark, Riri Williams and Amadeus Cho, who team up to solve problems.

    — Chris Hemsworth continues his quest to live a healthier, more present, and longer life in a second season of “Limitless,” now called “Limitless: Live Better Now.” The three-part docuseries sees Hemsworth learn more about brain power (with help from his friend and recording artist Ed Sheeran), risk and pain. The three episodes stream on Hulu and Disney+ beginning Friday.

    New video games to play from Aug. 11-17

    — EA Sports is jumping aboard the artificial intelligence bandwagon with Madden NFL 26, promising “a new AI-powered machine learning system trained by real play calls and game situations over nearly a decade.” The most intriguing additions are QB DNA and Coach DNA — so, for example, if you’re playing the Kansas City Chiefs, you’ll see the kind of moves you’d expect from Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid. As always, the goal is to get ever closer to real-life football, with more dynamic weather effects, more details from pro stadiums and the return (at last!) of team mascots. The cover model this season is Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley, who’ll be ready to start leaping over defenders Thursday on PlayStation 5, Xbox X/S, Switch 2 and PC.

    Not So Brief Plot Synopsis: Life in the post-apocalypse isn’t all pretzels and mother’s milk, and no one knows that better than Furiosa (Alyla Browne, then Anya Taylor-Joy). She’s snatched from the Green Place at a young age by the warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) before disappearing into Immortan Joe’s (Lachy Hulme) Citadel, where she disguises herself as a boy, learns how to navigate the Wasteland, and bides her time before taking her vengeance.
    “Critical” Analysis: Since the word “saga” is right there in the title, it follows that Furiosa differs significantly in tone and pacing than its predecessor, Mad Max: Fury Road. Referring to Max at all is a bit of a throw-off as well, because both these movies are Furiosa’s stories, this one just isn’t as coy about it.

    And besides being longer and more deliberate in fleshing out several returning characters, it also feebly asks the question: can romance bloom in the Wasteland?

    This being a prequel, there are other factors to consider. For example, anyone who’s seen Fury Road knows who’s going to live and who’s going to die (or disappear, which is the same thing). Furiosa the Character is as deserving of backstory as anyone in the franchise*, but Furiosa the Movie threatens to undercut George Miller’s previous accomplishments.

    Which is what makes Taylor-Joy’s performance notable: she inhabits Furiosa to such an extent that the new stuff doesn’t diminish Theron’s take … without really adding to it. Fury Road’s Furiosa hooked us with nothing more than her fierce determination to free the Wives, stone-cold badassery with a Type 56 SKS rifle and a War Rig, and a blistering “Remember me?” delivered while ripping Immortan Joe’s face off. The horrors of her early years were devastating even when merely implied.

    Next to the action pieces, Taylor-Joy’s best bits come as she’s learning to survive under the boot of the various warlords, and in the brief period of (almost) romantic idyll with the heretofore unknown Praetorian Jack (Tom Burke).

    If we take Miller at his word, he’d storyboarded Furiosa before a single frame of Fury Road was filmed. That’s a little hard to reconcile with the latter’s whiplash pacing and the former’s occasionally languid running time. Furiosa is the longest Mad Max movie by a good thirty minutes, and didn’t need to be.

    Take Hemsworth. He’s fine, but still can’t top Hulme’s Immortan Joe for menace. Dementus is Road Warrior’s Lord Humungus with a schmear of Thunderdome’s Auntie Entity, and the results – which aren’t bad by any stretch – often feel unnecessary. Hemsworth is clearly having a ball playing a nutbag bad guy, and has the most lines in the movie. But half would have done just as well.

    The action, once it ramps up, is expectedly excellent. No one knows their way around vehicular carnage like George Miller, and the “40 Day Wasteland War” is depicted in a very Road Warrior fashion, with dissociative scene transitions and abrupt, martial music backstopping the carnage.

    Furiosa isn’t superfluous, by any means. The first act, in which Furiosa’s mother(?) (Charlee Fraser) pursues carves her way through Dementus’ stooges trying to get her back, is masterful. But if Miller is merely going to create stories in the Mad Max Universe without Max, that’s certainly his prerogative (he built the damn universe, after all), the reaction may not be as shiny and chrome as before.

    *Runners-up: Warrior Woman (Road Warrior) and Fifi (Mad Max).

    Let’s Talk About the Ending of Furiosa

    What a lovely, lovely day! After years of anticipation and discussion, George Miller’s follow-up to Mad Max: Fury Road is finally here. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is now in theaters and it acts as a perfect compliment to that 2015 masterpiece, giving the character of Furiosa an intense backstory while also building out the world of the Wasteland.

    Spoilers of the Week: July 1st

    And while there’s nothing wildly surprising in the film, especially since we know what happens immediately after, we do love the ending a lot and figured you might want to dive into it a bit after seeing the film. Major spoilers follow.

    All of Furiosa leads up to the character (Anya Taylor-Joy) finally getting face to face with Dementus (Chris Hemsworth), the maniacal warlord primarily responsible for ruining her life by kidnapping her and killing her mother. The showdown happens, Furiosa is victorious, but we then see multiple versions of the exact conclusion. It’s Miller’s wink at legend and storytelling. An acknowledgment that what’s real and what’s told are not always the same, especially in mythology.

    What’s fascinating here is that the legends of how Furiosa defeated Dementus are way less exciting than the truth. What Furiosa actually did to Dementus wasn’t simple and straightforward. It was brutal. It was, in fact, epic, and proves that her legend is merely a fraction of her reality. She’s a mythical creature but in real life, she’s even better.

    So what happens? Well, all throughout the movie, we see that Furiosa carries a seed with her. It’s a seed given to her by her mother as a reminder of her home. It’s her most prized possession because it’s not only from her home, it also represents the possibility of renewal.

    The seed doesn’t factor into the final fight but it becomes crucial right after. Instead of just killing Dementus, we see that Furiosa somehow figures out a way to use his body as the soil to give life to the seed. He becomes part of its roots, forever stuck in agony, as the seed slowly sucks the life out of him and transforms into a beautiful fruit tree. Basically, Dementus becomes the basis for Furiosa’s rebirth. It’s an inexplicable, but brutal and fascinating fate for Hemsworth’s character. One ripe—pun intended—with meaning.

    Furiosa then picks a piece of fruit, brings it to Immortal Joe’s wives, and leads them to a War Rig where, in Mad Max: Fury Road, we’ll see them attempt to escape. The film goes right up until to the next movie. Then, in the end credits, it even shows a little Fury Road highlight reel just as a reminder.

    So Furiosa ends with the character becoming a Wasteland legend and linking up perfectly with the next film. In terms of endings, it doesn’t get much better than that.

    They also follow the same ecological through line that informed the first movie. The oil crisis of the 1970s hit the Australian city of Melbourne particularly hard, Miller recalls. Eventually, only one gas station in the city remained open for business. As lines to fill up grew longer and tensions continued to mount, “it took 10 days for the first shot to be fired,” Miller says.

    “It wasn’t fired at anybody,” he hastens to add, saying, “We don’t have a gun culture in Australia.” But still, the ostensibly nonviolent incident stuck with him. If it only took 10 days for gas-related gunfire to break out, “what would happen in a hundred days?” he says he thought. “What would happen in a thousand days?” The Mad Max movies attempt to answer that question.

    Man’s eternal struggle to secure and protect resources provided the seed for the original 1979 film, with the great, roving hordes of Hannibal and Genghis Khan inspiring some of its most indelible images—mobile groups that “consumed everything before them.” But because Miller’s hordes are enabled by fossil fuels instead of elephants or horses, we’re back to that issue of scarcity. (Electric cars don’t work in the Mad Max universe, as “you can’t charge them anymore.”)

    While Miller’s most recent Mad Max films share the DNA of the first film, 1981’s The Road Warrior, and the Tina Turner–starring Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, the director acknowledges one major development that happened between the third film’s 1985 release and 2015, when Fury Road debuted to global acclaim. “The biggest shift in cinema after sound was the digital dispensation,” Miller says, citing Jurassic Park as the film that ushered in the digital-effects era.

    Miller dipped his toes into those waters with the porcine fairy tale Babe, which he cowrote and produced, and then dove in with Happy Feet, the 2006 penguin saga that netted Miller his first Academy Award, for best animated feature. “Almost at the same time, I was thinking, Wow, these tools…we could apply [them] to action films or stories like Mad Max,” Miller says. “We can do things that we can never dream of doing in the past.”

    An indelible image from Buster Keaton’s 1926 action comedy, The General, informed a memorable shot in Beyond Thunderdome. Technological advances allowed Miller to take the moment to its logical conclusion in Fury Road, which was impossible to safely shoot before the advent of digital. “Cinema, like all arts or all human endeavors—there’s a kind of cultural evolution. One thing builds on another,” he says.

    Earlier in the week, we got our first look at Transformers One, and it probably didn’t look like what you were imagining. The animated movie, which is meant to serve as an origin story for Optimus Prime (Chris Hemsworth) and Megatron (Brian Tyree Henry)—here respectively known as Orion Pax and D-16—is sillier than expected, and predates the Autobot/Decepticon war that serves as the franchise’s foundation. If you’re on the fence after that trailer, director Josh Cooley’s here to assuage your concerns, and also give some more insight into how the movie will serve its characters.

    The Real Ghostbusters Toys With Fantastic Fright Features are Back!

    Talking to IGN, Cooley explained that the trailer’s comedy focus was in part to help audiences “fall in love with [Orion and D-16] as brothers and friends” before things hit the fan. “They’re from the same generation and have a very tight relationship,” he continued, “[and] something happens on their planet that they both have two different reactions to. By the end of this film, there’s some serious stakes.”

    In D-16’s case, those stakes involve treating him like he’s not automatically booked to be a villain. Cooley described the future Megatron as someone who should be “very real and fully rounded. D-16 takes [things] to a place, just a lot of anger, but you understand why.” With Henry’s insight, the team ensured that audiences would relate to D-16 and get where he was coming from before an undescribed event changes his outlook on Cybertron in ways that lead to a “natural split” with Orion. Cooley hopes that before the credits roll, fans and newcomers will view D-16 and Orion’s conflict as a very real and tragic split between old friends.

    As for Orion, he’s described by Cooley as someone who’s driven, but doesn’t always put the drive to its best use. He’ll have to discover how to earn the name Optimus Prime, and what being Optimus Prime really even means. “Like anybody else, there is a level of maturity that we don’t have unless we’ve gone through something. […] We’re really taking these characters to heart and treating them with the respect that they deserve and knowing where they’re going to end up. It’s just seeing how they get there.”

    Transformers One comes to theaters on September 20.

    It’s Friday night, and a highlight of the gala season is on the calendar: Save Venice’s Un Ballo in Maschera, an event I always look forward to. The glitzy soirée, which focuses on raising money dedicated to the artistic preservation of Venice, Italy, is, fittingly, held at the Plaza Hotel. While the non-profit organization hosts several galas, the New York iteration is always special; this year, it fell on Friday, April 12. 

    Tonight’s date is Ava Dash, one of my best friends and, luckily, one of those girls who is surprisingly easygoing, because we both ended up last-minute winging our looks for the evening—shockingly enough, they worked out quite well, if I do say so myself. When I say I was texting my salesperson at Saks at 5 p.m. looking for the perfect McQueen blazer, I’m not exaggerating. Luckily, Ava and I had a good starting place, as Julian Polak of Maison Spoiled texted Ava and me photos of sparkling diamond options to tie our outfits together, and base the looks around—I ended up basing my look around a white gold-and-yellow diamond brooch Julian picked for me.

    For Ava, I pulled a vintage, circa-1980s couture Calvin Klein marigold gown from my late grandmother’s collection, and tied the look together with tan Rachel Roy shoes and a bejeweled Judith Leiber monkey bag. Sometimes I do miss being in fashion, because I always love when my girlfriends let me style them. A few photos later, and we hopped in an Uber and were off to the Plaza.

    We arrived just in time for the last moments of cocktail hour, and my inner Kris Jenner came out, making sure Ava, the 24-year-old daughter of Damon Dash and Rachel Roy, was photographed by everyone.

    Now, onto the actual event, which was sponsored by Oscar de la Renta and the Gritti Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel. The sold-out event, themed La Primavera and attended by over 400 guests, raised more than $1.2 million for the preservation of historic art and architecture in Venezia. 

    As someone who has attended charity galas since I was 14 years old, I’m confident that I know a thing or two about how to do them right. The key to this event was the backdrop, which meant having it decorated and transformed into a Venetian garden by Save Venice co-chair and event engineer Bronson van Wyck and his team, Van Wyck & Van Wyck. With Bronson on decor, there isn’t much left to worry about, especially with Nathalie Kaplan’s consultancy agency, NGK Global, handling logistics. She’s the queen of these society charity galas, which are her speciality. And with corporate sponsors like Chanel and Gucci, the night was bound to be a success.

    Aside from Ava, of course, some of the other best-dressed attendees included Tina Leung (in an Oscar de la Renta Barbie-esque sheer crystal top and pink silk bow dress), Di Mondo (in a blue hydrangeas-covered creation with butterflies and a matching mask), Ivy Getty (in a sheer, embellished Oscar de la Renta gown and Bulgari jewels) and Natalie Jackson (in a classic black Vivienne Westwood gown and over-the-top butterfly mask). And let’s not forget about van Wyck’s peacock cape. Other fashionable attendees included Emily Ratajkowski, Jenna Lyons, Nicky Hilton Rothschild, Anna van Patten, Julian Schnabel, Huma Abedin, LaQuan Smith and Ezra J William, to name just a few. 

    After the cocktail hour came to an end, Ava and I headed to our seats for the dinner. Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, the co-creative directors of Oscar de la Renta, presided over the Ceremony for Outstanding Masks; Jordan Roth, Andy Yu and Lisa Sher-Chambers won the three prizes.

    It was an incredibly, glamorous evening, and in the midst of the festivities, I caught up with Ava on what she’s up to right now. 

    Observer: What’s the latest with you?

    Ava Dash: I just moved back to New York. After graduating college at LMU in L.A., I’m excited to be back in the city and focusing on modeling as well as television projects. 

    What’s next for you, career-wise? 

    I recently worked with PETA, launching a campaign advocating for the welfare and well-being of animals. This has always been a priority to me, and working with their team has taught me so much. I am also very grateful to have just signed with a new modeling agency in New York City.

    Why the switch from L.A. to New York? 

    I was born in New York and I moved to L.A. with my family when I was 14 years old; I did high school as well as college there, and was ready for a change. I wanted to elevate my career and experience my 20s in the city. The experiences that I can have in New York City, I just wasn’t having in L.A.. The New York lifestyle is so spontaneous; I was walking around Soho with friends and kept running into people we knew, adding to our group, and a magician stopped us and did an impromptu show. This type of thing never happens in L.A., where you’re just driving from place to place. 

    What’s your favorite part of New York? 

    Being able to walk around and meet new people. The feeling of endless possibilities drew me back to the city where I was born. Literally whatever you’re into, you can find the best of it in this city. 

    We’re at Save Venice—what other charitable causes are important to you?

    The well-being of children is the most important. My mom and I co-authored a young adult novel [96 Words for Love, published in 2019] and gave the proceeds to girls rescued from sex trafficking in India. I am also very passionate about the well-being of animals, and have traveled to Thailand to work at a sanctuary for rescued elephants.

    What has been your favorite part of the night thus far? 

    I love people-watching and seeing how people come together for a theme. There is so much devastation that happens in Venice every year, so I am proud to be a part of a community that cares about this cause. 

    The event was beautiful! The food was delicious, the drinks were flowing and I love that the dance floor was packed throughout the night. It seems like everyone enjoyed themselves in helping to raise money for the historical and fabulous city of Venice.

    Rate the decor one to 10?

    It’s quintessential old school New York—9/10.

    Who’s best dressed that you’ve seen tonight

    I must ask—boyfriend or single lady?

    Single lady! Trying to channel my inner Carrie Bradshaw with my recent move.

    In the last couple of years, it feels like more big name actors have come into the MCU rather than relative unknowns and rising stars. From Harrison Ford to Oscar Isaac and Aubrey Plaza, anyone’s up for grabs these days—unless you’re Kristen Stewart, that is.

    Guesting on the “Not Skinny but Not Fat” podcast, the Love Lies Bleeding star was pretty frank in not having any interest in suiting up anytime soon. “It sounds like a fucking nightmare,” she said. Having been in the Twilight series and co-starring in 2012’s Snow White & the Huntsman alongside MCU veteran Chris Hemsworth, she doesn’t think she’s too good for these movies. Rather, her issue with the megafranchise is a fairly common one amongst audiences: they feel like they’re designed by committee and don’t allow for much in the way of creative freedom, both for a particular film’s director or the performers themselves.

    “You would have to put so much money and so much trust into one person,” she explained, “and it doesn’t happen. What ends up happening is this algorithmic, weird experience where you can’t feel personal at all about it.” In her eyes, “the system would have to change” if she were to actually sign up for a role.

    The other thing that would get her onboard? Greta Gerwig. She freely admitted her tune would change if the Barbie and Little Women director approached her with it, she’d sign on.     To Miranda Priestly, the Met Gala has made a groundbreaking announcement. This year’s dress code theme is “A Garden in Time,” inspired by J.G. Ballard’s short story from 1962. As described by Vogue, the story has a garden with “crystalline flowers with translucent leaves, gleaming glass-like stems, and crystals at the heart of every bloom” that may inspire the guest’s outfit choices on May 6. As to who will be hosting this floral gala, there is a bunny hopping around the garden. A… Bad… Bunny… It was right there. He’s teaming up with Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, and Zendaya as the co-chairs, beginning with “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” an exhibit featuring clothing too delicate to be worn again. Does it mean chevron print will gracefully make its way to a glass case to be preserved for future generations? We can only hope as it’s a part of herstory.

    Reportedly, the third season is inspired by Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher book series, Time of Contempt. The cast ensemble of The Witcher Season 3 includes Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, Freya Allen as Ciri of Cintra, Joey Batey as Jaskier, MyAnna Buring as Tissaia, Anna Shaffer as Triss Merigold, Royce Pierreson as Istredd, and others.

    Chris Hemsworth Clarifies His Comments About Stepping Back From Acting Due To Health Concerns (Exclusive)

    Chris Hemsworth is getting ready to celebrate his 40th birthday this summer, but he’s not even close to slowing down!

    When the actor and his “Extraction 2” director, Sam Hargrave, sat down with ET’s Rachel Smith to promote their thrilling Netflix sequel this week, Hemsworth was quick to clarify comments that got “sort of blown out of proportion” about him taking a step back from acting.

    Last fall, the “Thor” star told Vanity Fair  that he planned to take some time off after promoting his unscripted Disney+ adventure series, “Limitless”. The decision, he said at the time, coincided with an episode of the show on death, as well as one in which Hemsworth agreed to take a genetic test, which ultimately revealed that his risk of developing Alzheimer’s is eight to 10 times higher than that of the general population — due to the fact that Hemsworth has two copies of APOE4 (the apolipoprotein E gene), one from his mom and one from his dad.

    After learning the results on the show, Hemsworth said in a confessional that “the idea that I won’t be able to remember the life I’ve experienced, or my wife, my kids, is probably my biggest fear.”

    However, Hemsworth said, the decision to take a brief career break was not as connected to the genetic test as it may have seemed.

    “It all got a little sort of blown out of proportion,” he shared. “I wanted to take off because I’ve been working for 10 years, and I’ve got three kids that I want to spend more time with.”

    Doing that show, each episode resonated in such a way that made me realize how life is just flying by, and I wanted to be still for long periods and more often,” he continued. “The information about the predisposition… allowed me to make all the changes — whether it be nutrition, my training, my mental fitness. Which is the point of the series. The whole point for me was to give people access to tools, knowledge, information on how to live a better, longer, healthier life.”

    As for how his career might look different in his 40s — the actor hits the milestone birthday on Aug. 11 — Hemsworth said it’s simply about making more discerning choices now that he’s reached a comfortable point in his career and feels “healthier than I’ve ever felt.”

    “I’ve been running from project to project for long time, just to avoid being unemployed or that fear that it’s the last job you’ll get, you know?” he explained. “I wanna be more curated about the choices I make, things I immerse myself in or I’m involved in. I want to have greater value and work with great people.”

    One of those great people is pal Idris Elba, who reunites with his “Thor” co-star, Hemsworth, in “Extraction 2”, playing a mysterious character known as The Man in the Suit, who provides Hemsworth’s mercenary-for-hire Tyler Rake with a new mission.

    “Idris is a really good friend of mine, and we’ve talked about working together,” Hemsworth recalled, sharing how he and Hargrave pitched the actor the idea. “He brings out something very different in these characters, something a bit more that I think people will love.”

    And both the star and director were excited about the possibility of Elba returning for a third Extraction movie, after fan support got the sequel easily greenlit.

    “It’s why we make the films — the response from the fans and their support,” Hemsworth praised. “[We] have a duty to go bigger and better on this one, with a deeper emotional storyline that resonated with the people. We made a film that we were really proud of, and the response has been amazing.”

    “Extraction 2” premieres June 16 on Netflix.

    “Extraction 2” pushed Chris Hemsworth right to the limit.

    ET Canada’s Brittnee Blair recently spoke with the star of the blockbuster Netflix action sequel, and he talked about the craziest stunt he performed for the movie.

    “The most complicated one was the one in its entirety,” Hemsworth said, referring to the film’s eye-popping 21-minute long take. “Particularly in the section which is in the prison yard, where there’s 300 or 400 extras and background artists and stunt performers. Things are on fire. People are on fire. I’m on fire.”

    Asked how he mentally prepared to be set on fire for the sequence, Hemsworth said, “You know, you use two parts of the brain. One’s going, ‘What the hell are we doing? This is insane. Get out of here.’ And then the other part’s like, ‘No, no, no. The safety measurements have all been taken, and there’s guys there to help.’”

    Still, the actor admitted that doing the stunt was not without its serious risks.

    “It’s always a roll of the dice,” he said. “And, you know, I would put just enough burn liquid on my arm that would ignite. And by the end of the sequence we were shooting, it should have gone out. Sometimes it didn’t and I’d have to do a little bit of this,” miming stamping out the flame.

    Sometimes it did get a little close for comfort, he said, recalling, “Especially when it ran up my arm at one point and I’m swinging and punching. I was like ‘Whoa, that’s getting close! That flame.’”

    Hemsworth also talked about the importance of doing as many of the stunts as possible for real and in-camera, particularly during the big train sequence in the film, which he called “pretty wild.”

    “Just the fact the train’s moving 50 miles an hour, I’m on the front of the train and the helicopter is flying backwards 20 feet away from me, and [director Sam Hargrave]’s in the middle of the camera capturing it all,” he recalled.

    “And this is all in-camera. This is not green screen or special effects. So it has a grit and intensity and a truth that I think resonates with audiences,” Hemsworth said. “You know, we’ve been inundated with special effects and video game-type imagery, and it’s fun and it’s cool, but there’s a there’s a lack of truth there. Whereas this was all in-camera.”

    “Extraction 2” premieres June 16 on Netflix.

    Chris Hemsworth has announced that he will be taking a break from acting after receiving news that he has a heightened genetic risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

    The Australian actor learned that he has two copies of the APOE4 gene, which can increase one’s chances of developing Alzheimer’s eight- to 12-fold, and is associated with earlier onset of the disease, according to the Mayo Clinic.

    About 25 per cent of the population has one copy of this gene, but Hemsworth is in the 2-3 per cent that inherited the gene from each parent.

    Hemsworth, 39, discovered this heightened genetic predisposition while undergoing tests for his Disney+ documentary series Limitless, which sees the Thor actor test his body and explore new ways to live longer and healthier.

    Hemsworth told Vanity Fair that the tests confirmed his “biggest fear.” The results weren’t a total surprise for him because the actor’s grandfather is currently being treated for Alzheimer’s.

    “It’s not like I’ve been handed my resignation,” Hemsworth said in the interview, clarifying that he hasn’t been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. “It’s not a pre-deterministic gene, but it is a strong indication.”

    Hemsworth revealed that he was supposed to learn his genetic test results live on camera while filming Limitless, but one of the doctors on the show, Peter Attia, and series creator Darren Aronofsky, decided to tell him the news privately. Hemsworth was given the option of removing references to Alzheimer’s from the show but he said it was important to keep those parts in to increase awareness about Alzheimer’s prevention.

    “My concern was I just didn’t want to manipulate it and overdramatize it, and make it into some sort of hokey grab at empathy or whatever for entertainment,” he told Vanity Fair.

    The Marvel star added that the benefit of knowing about this grim outlook is that he can work to prevent the onset of the disease.

    “If you look at Alzheimer’s prevention, the benefit of preventative steps is that it affects the rest of your life,” Hemsworth told Vanity Fair. “It’s all about sleep management, stress management, nutrition, movement, fitness. It’s all kind of the same tools that need to be applied in a consistent way.”

    Learning about his Alzheimer’s risk prompted Hemsworth to reflect on his family and career, telling Vanity Fair that he’s worried about missing out on important moments with his children. Hemsworth is married to fellow actor Elsa Pataky, with whom he has three kids.

    “Before you know it, they’re 18 and they’ve moved out of the house, and I missed the window,” he said. “It really triggered something in me to want to take some time off. And since we finished the show, I’ve been completing the things I was already contracted to do.”

    Hemsworth announced that he will be taking a break from acting after he finishes the press tour for Limitless.

    “I’m going home and I’m going to have a good chunk of time off and just simplify. Be with the kids, be with my wife.”

    Hemsworth will be on the silver screen again in George Miller’s new addition to the Mad Max franchise, Furiosa, which wrapped shooting earlier this month.

    According to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, by the year 2050 more than 1.7 million Canadians are expected to be living with dementia, with an average of 685 individuals being diagnosed each day.

    There are many things Canadians can do to improve their health and reduce the impact of dementia, says the organization. Much like Hemsworth stated in his interview, these include being more physically and socially active, following a healthy diet and challenging one’s brain by engaging in games, reading, and learning new languages, hobbies and skills, among other things.

    Chris Hemsworth is not letting life pass him by. That’s why the 39-year-old action star says he’s “taking time off” after he finishes promoting his new Disney+ series, “Limitless”.

    The “Thor” star told Vanity Fair that he came to the realization he needed to slow things down following the filming of an episode on death for his new docuseries. Hemsworth evoked his children — 10-year-old India and 8-year-old twins, Sasha and Tristan, whom he shares with wife Elsa Pataky — as the catalyst behind the decision.

    “Doing an episode on death and facing your own mortality made me go, ‘Oh God, I’m not ready to go yet,’” he said. “I want to sit and be in this space with a greater sense of stillness and gratitude. And then you start talking about kids and family and going, ‘Oh my God, they’re getting older, they’re growing up and I keep slapping another movie on top of another movie.’ Before you know it, they’re 18 and they’ve moved out of house, and I missed the window.”

    He continued, “It really triggered something in me to want to take some time off. And since we finished the show, I’ve been completing the things I was already contracted to do.     It was while filming “Limitless” that Hemsworth agreed to take a genetic test, which ultimately revealed that his risk of developing Alzheimer’s is eight to 10 times higher than that of the general population.     And there are some realities one must come to terms with, like the fact his grandfather is currently battling Alzheimer’s.

    “I haven’t seen him in a few years, but my other family members have and there’s some days where he’s quite joyful and gives you a big hug,” Hemsworth told Vanity Fair. “But my mum was saying he’s just a really friendly guy. I’m not sure he actually remembers much anymore and he slips in and out of Dutch, which is his original language, so he’ll be talking Dutch and English and then a mash-up and then maybe some other new words as well.”

    Chris Hemsworth embarked on a personal and physically demanding journey for his new series “Limitless” that ultimately led to a sobering discovery.

    The “Thor” actor, 39, learns in one episode of the limited Disney+/National Geographic series – which shows him exploring ways to enhance his longevity and combat aging – that he has two copies of the APOE4 gene, one from each of his parents, meaning he has a heightened predisposition for developing Alzheimer’s disease.

    “They took all my bloodwork and did a bunch of tests and the plan was to on-camera tell me all the results and then talk about how you can improve this and that,” Hemsworth shared with Vanity Fair in an article published on Thursday. “And Peter Attia, who is the longevity doctor in that episode, and overseeing a lot of the show, called [“Limitless” creator] Darren [Aronofsky] and said, ‘I don’t want to tell him this on camera. We need to have an off-side conversation and see if he even wants this to be in the show.’ It was pretty shocking because he called me up and he told me.”

    Upon learning the news, Hemsworth said he “had a bunch of questions,” later adding that he “didn’t really know what to think. I was like, ‘Am I supposed to be worried? Is this concerning?’”

    He also said that the show then “became even more relevant and important for me, even more poignant than I ever thought it would be,” adding that APOE4 is “not a pre-deterministic gene, but it is a strong indication. Ten years ago, I think it was more thought of as determinant.”

    The new information, which Hemsworth said makes him “eight to 10 times more likely” to eventually develop Alzheimer’s disease, naturally caused him to reflect on death and his own mortality.

    “There was an intensity to navigating it. Most of us, we like to avoid speaking about death in the hope that we’ll somehow avoid it,” he told Vanity Fair. “We all have this belief that we’ll figure it out. Then to all of a sudden be told some big indicators are actually pointing to this as the route which is going to happen, the reality of it sinks in.”

    “Limitless,” which shows the Marvel star engaging in various stunts and practices to prolong and enhance his life, in fact deals with facing death in the final episode.

    “I think that’s my favorite episode. That’s where I worked with the death doula and people who worked in palliative care and end of life care and then spoke to a number of people who were at the end of their days or coming upon them – even younger people that were diagnosed with cancer and didn’t have long to live,” he shared.

    “Doing an episode on death and facing your own mortality made me go, ‘Oh God, I’m not ready to go yet,’” he later added. “I want to sit and be in this space with a greater sense of stillness and gratitude. And then you start talking about kids and family and going, ‘Oh my God, they’re getting older, they’re growing up and I keep slapping another movie on top of another movie.’ Before you know it, they’re 18 and they’ve moved out of house, and I missed the window.”

    In preparing the show for air, Hemsworth also mentioned that he was “offered a version of the episode where we didn’t talk about [his discovered genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s],” but that the prospect of helping others helped him to get over any hesitation.

    “I thought, ‘No, look, if this is a motivator for people to take better care of themselves and also understand that there are steps you can take – then fantastic.’ My concern was I just didn’t want to manipulate it and overdramatize it, and make it into some sort of hokey grab at empathy or whatever for entertainment.”

    Hemsworth, who most recently appeared as the MCU’s God of Thunder in his fourth solo outing in this summer’s “Thor: Love and Thunder,” is next set to appear in another sequel, next year’s “Extraction 2.” He is also wrapping up a yet-to-be-revealed role in 2024’s “Furiosa,” costarring Anya Taylor-Joy, set in the universe of “Mad Max.”

    Chris Hemsworth’s new show with National Geographic on Disney Plus is “a mission to live better for longer.” But because of that show, he has come face-to-face with his “biggest fear” – that he might develop Alzheimer’s disease.

    During one episode of the show, the 39-year-old “Thor” actor underwent genetic testing to learn more about his present and future health. It turns out that Hemsworth has a rare genetic makeup with two copies of the APO4 gene, which has been connected to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease. 

    “ApoE4 is the strongest risk factor gene for Alzheimer’s disease,” a 2021 study by the National Institutes of Health says, “although inheriting ApoE4 does not mean a person will definitely develop the disease.”

    While about 25% of the population has one copy of the gene, only 2% to 3% have two, according to that research.

    “The idea that I won’t be able to remember the life I’ve experienced or my wife, my kids, this is probably my biggest fear,” Hemsworth says in the show’s fifth episode. 

    During filming, the show’s longevity doctor Peter Attia first told Hemsworth about the finding off-camera, Hemsworth told Vanity Fair. That conversation, Hemsworth said, “was pretty shocking.” 

    “It was a pretty brief conversation, all things considered. I hung up the phone and my parents were there, at the time,” he told Vanity Fair. “…I told them, and then they had a bunch of questions. I had a bunch of questions, but no one answered them. I wish I’d had a more intense follow-up with it because I didn’t really know what to think. I was like, ‘Am I supposed to be worried? Is this concerning?’”

    Attia told Hemsworth in the episode that he is about 8 to 10 times more likely than the general population of developing Alzheimer’s. According to the National Institutes of Health, it’s also associated with early onset, which can happen anytime between someone’s 30s and mid-60s. 

    “There was an intensity to navigating it. Most of us, we like to avoid speaking about death in the hope that we’ll somehow avoid it. We all have this belief that we’ll figure it out,” Hemsworth reflected to Vanity Fair. “Then to all of a sudden be told some big indicators are actually pointing to this as the route which is going to happen, the reality of it sinks in.     It’s also a disease that his family has significant experience with. Hemsworth’s grandfather has Alzheimer’s. 

    “He doesn’t remember who we are, you know his grandkids, but also his own children he forgets. It’s heartbreaking,” he says in the show. 

    He also told Vanity Fair that there are some days when his grandfather is “quite joyful and gives you a big hug.” 

    “I’m not sure he actually remembers much anymore and he slips in and out of Dutch, which is his original language, so he’ll be talking Dutch and English and then a mash-up and them maybe some other new words as well,” he said.

    Despite his genetic makeup and family history, Attia told Hemsworth, “it’s my belief that if we take every step possible, we can reduce your risk to that of anyone else.” 

    The finding propelled Hemsworth to take action. According to the National Institute of Aging, physical activity, blood pressure control and cognitive training – activities that help enhance memory, reasoning and processing speed – could help ward off the disease’s onset, although those findings are inconclusive.

    “It’s not like I’ve been handed my resignation,” he told Vanity Fair. 

    “When you have preposition to cardiovascular heart disease, cancer, anything—it’s all about sleep management, stress management, nutrition, movement, fitness. It’s all kind of the same tools that need to be applied in a consistent way,” he said

    But at the end of the day, Hemsworth told Vanity Fair that what matters most is making the most out of life for as long as you can. 

    “Whether or not any of this information helps you live longer, it’s about living better right now,” he said. “Whatever you do right now to benefit your future self is having a huge benefit in your current self. … Live with as big a sense of gratitude and love for life as you can.”
