  • James Van Der Beek’s “Dawson’s Creek” co-stars, including Katie Holmes and Busy Philipps, react to his death

    [ad_1]

James Van Der Beek’s “Dawson’s Creek” co-stars are sharing memories and tributes to him after his death this week at 48 years old.

Katie Holmes, who played co-lead and love interest Joey Potter, said that Van Der Beek’s death is a “lot to process,” and she shared a handwritten note where she remembered him as a “hero.”

“I mourn this loss with a heart holding the reality of his absence and deep gratitude for his imprint on it,” Holmes wrote, in part.

In a paragraph addressed to Van Der Beek’s wife Kimberly, Holmes said she would always “be there to shower you with Love and Compassion.”

“I am so grateful to have shared in a piece of James’ journey,” Holmes wrote in the caption of her post. “He is beloved.”

Busy Philipps, who joined “Dawson’s Creek” in its fifth season, said her “heart is deeply hurting” for “every person who knew James and loved him, anyone who loved his work or had the pleasure of meeting him, all of his dear friends and community that surrounded him as he battled this illness, especially his parents and brother and sister.”

“James Van Der Beek was one in a billion and he will be forever missed and i don’t know what else to say. i am just so so sad. He was my friend and i loved him and i’m so grateful for our friendship all these years,” Philipps wrote, alongside a photo of Van Der Beek.

Chad Michael Murray, who also joined “Dawson’s Creek” in Season 5, said Van Der Beek “inspired all of us.”

“His words, art and humanity inspired all of us — he inspired us to be better in all ways,” Murray wrote, in part, in a comment under the post announcing Van Der Beek’s death.

Mary Margaret Humes, who played Dawson’s mother on the show, remembered Van Der Beek as a “gracious warrior” who “fought a hard battle against all odds with such quiet strength and dignity.”

Philipps and Murray highlighted a GoFundMe that the Van Der Beek family has shared to raise money to pay off his medical costs. Van Der Beek said in November that he was auctioning off memorabilia from throughout his career to help pay for care. The online fundraiser has raised over $1.3 million as of Thursday morning.

Van Der Beek announced in November 2024 that he had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer and was undergoing treatment. His official cause of death has not been shared.

Colorectal cancer has become a leading cause of cancer-related deaths for Americans under the age of 50, and cases have been rising in that age group in recent years.

James Ransone, the actor who played Ziggy Sobotka in the HBO series “The Wire” and appeared in many other TV shows and movies, has died. He was 46.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office said in online records that Ransone died by suicide on Friday.

Ransone’s film credits include “It: Chapter Two,” “The Black Phone” and “Black Phone 2,” and he appeared in TV shows including the cop drama “Bosch” and “Poker Face.”

CBS News reached out to representatives of Ransone on Sunday, as well as to a spokesperson for the medical examiner’s office, for comment.

Ransone, a Maryland native, told Interview Magazine in 2016 that he had realized he was a full-blown actor while shooting “Generation Kill,” a 2008 HBO mini-series also starring Alexander Skarsgård and Jon Huertas. He also spoke about struggling with addiction for several years before he sobered up ahead of filming the series.

According to the interview, Ransone’s passion for performing arts was cultivated when he was a teenager in Baltimore.

“Baltimore breeds a really specific type of weirdo,” he told Interview Magazine. “Animal Collective is from Baltimore. Dan Deacon, John Waters. There’s a through line of weirdness and a hard edge that I see when I meet people from that area.”

Ransone is survived by his wife and their two children.

British-Irish actor Michael Gambon, who played the wizard Albus Dumbledore in the six later “Harry Potter” movies, has died at the age of 82, his agency confirmed to CBS News on Thursday.

In a statement issued on behalf of his wife Lady Anne Gambon and his son Fergus, publicist Clair Dobbs said the family was “devastated to announce the loss,” and added that the “beloved husband and father” had died peacefully in a hospital with his wife and son by his side following a bout of pneumonia.

Gambon was awarded four U.K. television BAFTAs during his decades-long acting career, which saw him take staring roles across television, movies, radio and on the stage.

It was his role as the head of the Hogwarts school for witches and wizards in the Harry Potter franchise, however, that made him a familiar face to more recent generations. He succeeded actor Richard Harris in the role, who died in 2002 after portraying Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter movies.

He once acknowledged not having read any of J. K. Rowling’s best-selling books, arguing that it was safer to follow the script rather than be too influenced by the Harry Potter stories in print. That didn’t prevent him from embodying the spirit of Professor Dumbledore, the powerful wizard who fought against evil to protect his students.

Although the Potter role raised Gambon’s international profile and introduced him to a new generation of fans, he had long been recognized as one of Britain’s leading actors. His work spanned TV, theater and radio, and he starred in dozens of films from “Gosford Park” to “The King’s Speech” and the animated family movie “Paddington.”

Gambon was knighted for services to drama in 1998, becoming Sir Michael Gambon.

Alan Arkin, the longtime screen and stage actor who won an Academy Award for his role in the 2006 film “Little Miss Sunshine,” has died. He was 89.

Arkin’s representative, Melody Korenbrot, confimed his death to CBS News on Friday.

Arkin, who won acclaim for his role as the foul-mouthed grandfather in “Little Miss Sunshine,” began his career in theater before breaking into television and film roles. He starred in films including “Edward Scissorhands” and “Argo,” and series like “BoJack Horseman.” His most recent role was on Netflix’s “The Kominsky Method,” where he earned two Emmy nominations for supporting actor in a comedy series.

During the course of his career, Arkin earned two Screen Actors Guild Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and a Tony Award, in addition to the Oscar and British Academy Film Award that he collected for “Little Miss Sunshine.” He also received multiple Oscar nominations, including for his first film “The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming.”

Arkin was married three times and has three children. He and his first wife, Jeremy Yaffe, were wed for six years and had two sons, Adam and Matthew. The pair divorced in 1961. From 1964 to 1994, Arkin was wed to screenwriter and actress Barbara Dana, with whom he had son Anthony Dana Arkin. After their divorce, Arkin married Suzanne Newlander.

During his acting career, Arkin worked with all three of his sons, including playing Adam Arkin’s character’s father on the series “Chicago Hope.”

Actor Tom Sizemore, who was a fixture on the Hollywood big screen in the 1990s and 2000s, has died at the age of 61, CBS News has learned.

Sizemore died Friday, his manager Charles Lago told CBS News in a statement. Sizemore “passed away peacefully in his sleep” at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California, Lago said, with his family by his side.

His death comes nearly two weeks after he suffered a brain aneurysm.

Sizemore collapsed early Feb. 18 at his home in Los Angeles and has been hospitalized since, remaining “in critical condition, in a coma and in intensive care,” Lago said. The brain aneurysm was the result of a stroke, Lago said.

In a previous statement on Monday, Lago said that doctors had informed his family that there is no further hope and have recommended end of life decision.”

Lago said the actor’s family was “deciding end of life matters.”

Sizemore, 61, has acted in films like “Saving Private Ryan,” “Heat” and “Black Hawk Down.” While he received accolades for his acting, his career foundered amid a litany of drug abuse arrests and run-ins with law enforcement, including domestic violence and abuse allegations. In 2003, he was convicted of domestic violence charges against his ex-girlfriend, former Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss.

In 2017, a woman accused Sizemore of abusing her as an 11-year-old during the production of the film “Born Killers.” No charges were filed.

Sizemore has two children, 17-year-old twin boys.

“Tom was one of the most sincere, kind and generous human beings I have had the pleasure of knowing,” Lago wrote Friday. “His courage and determination through adversity was always an inspiration to me. The past couple of years were great for him and he was getting his life back to a great place. He loved his sons and his family. I will miss my friend Tom Sizemore greatly.”
