From run clubs to libraries and everything in between, L.A. is home to plenty of third spaces for those who look hard enough
Referring to places outside the home and unrelated to work or school, third spaces are crucial for cultivating community. It’s no secret that the title of the loneliest generation belongs to Gen Z, who have largely traded in-person connection for digital connection, such as ordering coffee for delivery instead of making small talk with a barista, and defaulting to online social communities.
The loss of third spaces can be attributed in part to the COVID-19 pandemic, when Gen Z was forced to spend their formative years glued to a computer screen. In the years following, Angelenos are searching for ways to come back together IRL, and to forge the social bonds we so desperately crave.
Finding spaces to socialize and meet new people can be difficult, but luckily, in a city like L.A., the options are plentiful.
Los Angeles Public Libraries
One of the most common third spaces is libraries. They’re free and exist in most neighborhoods, making them an accessible location to connect with your community. The Los Angeles Public Library system is home to 72 branches, with many hosting book clubs, read-a-louds for children and special collections that go beyond borrowing books.
The Richard J. Riordan Central Library in Downtown features eight stories of third space magic, and is the third-largest central public library in the United States. In addition to numerous free events and community resources, the library features a free makerspace, the Octavia Lab, where members can access various state-of-the-art technology and let their creativity run wild! The library is also home to the beautiful Maguire Gardens if you want to soak up the sun and a good book.
Public Parks
When the weather is nice, public parks are a great option. With vibrant playgrounds, walking paths, picnic tables and open space for parties, sports and relaxation, these are great locations for families and individuals alike.

Westwood Recreation Center features options for the whole family. Aiden’s Place is a great playground for kids of all ages, and right next to it is Tommy’s Field, an outdoor turf soccer field. Two outdoor basketball courts and two gymnasiums are available for indoor sports and other activities, such as camps and classes. The center also features a walking path surrounding the park.
Griffith Park offers access to various hiking trails featuring gorgeous panoramic views of Los Angeles and the iconic Hollywood Sign, museums such as the Griffith Observatory and the Autry Museum, open space for picnics and other attractions.
Right in the middle of some of L.A.’s trendiest neighborhoods is the historic Echo Park Lake. This is a great spot to check out as you explore a new area of the city, or if you’re looking for a unique activity, take a ride in an iconic swan boat.
Organized Group Fitness Clubs
In the spirit of getting outside, L.A. offers many free, organized fitness groups for people looking to connect over a shared activity. While gyms are often regarded as a common third space, sometimes it’s easier to connect in an organized group setting, without the barrier of noise-cancelling headphones or expensive memberships.
Born out of two friends’ desire to create community and find an outlet against injustice, Venice Run Club has stood the test of time, hosting organized runs of varying lengths since 2020. It has gained some well-deserved internet fame for its ability to create lasting friendships and even spark romantic relationships.
The LA Cinephile Run Club brings together two of L.A.’s most common pastimes: watching movies and running. The club hosts bi-monthly group runs through historic filming locations around L.A. This is a great place to flex your movie knowledge or learn something new, while exploring unique running routes!

Blaque Girls Hike Los Angeles is a group dedicated to encouraging women of color to connect with nature and explore various hiking trails across Los Angeles and surrounding areas. The 5 AM Crew lives up to its name, encouraging people to get up early to hike and see the sunrise. Hosting three hikes per week, the 5 AM Crew fosters community and works to build meaningful relationships.
