More On Winnie Harlow & Michael Jackson’s Journey With Vitiligo

According to healthinsight.ca, Winnie Harlow was diagnosed with vitiligo at the age of four. Per the outlet, vitiligo is a skin condition that affects one in every hundred people and involves white patches appearing on different parts of their body. Medium reports that Michael Jackson began experiencing the effects of the condition in 1993. According to his son, Prince, Michael had “a lot of insecurity” around it, per PEOPLE.

“When people make up stories that I don’t want to be who I am, it hurts me. It’s a problem for me. I can’t control it. But what about all the millions of people who sit in the sun to become darker, to become other than what they are? Nobody says nothing about that,” Michael reportedly explained while speaking with Oprah in 1993. “It’s in my family, I can’t control it. It makes me very sad… I try to control it, and using makeup evens it out because I have blotches on my skin, and I have to even it out. But you know what’s funny? Why is that so important? That’s not important to me.”

Most recently, Harlow’s journey with vitiligo was commemorated by Madame Tussauds New York when they unveiled a wax figure of her in honor of World Vitiligo Day. The model ultimately called the honor a “stamp in time for representation.”

  • Winnie Harlow on pushing boundaries in gaming: ‘There’s no reason why there shouldn’t be inclusivity’

Winnie Harlow on pushing boundaries in gaming: ‘There’s no reason why there shouldn’t be inclusivity’

    [ad_1]

Here’s one thing I didn’t have on my 2024 bingo card – bonding with Winnie Harlow over our love for gaming. That’s right, the Winnie Harlow. The fashion icon, entrepreneur, skincare brand founder and trailblazer for the vitiligo community.

She’s conquered Victoria’s Secret runways, fronted multiple magazine covers and is even the founder of her own beauty brand, Cay Skin. Her latest project? Entering the gaming space – and she’s done it in the most iconic way possible. As it turns out, Winnie’s teamed up with The Sims 4 – one of my favourite video games of all time – to introduce a much-awaited vitiligo skin feature in character creation mode.

“I think it’s so beautiful to be able to represent your true self in-game. This partnership is a powerful statement encouraging players to embrace what makes them unique – both in-game and in real life,” she tells me over Zoom.

“I really worked for the little Winnie who’d never seen herself represented. And to have The Sims, a game that I used to play as a little girl, want me to be a part of this and making such a big change to allow everybody to feel represented was a real big honour,” she added.

Winnie Harlow On Why Representation In Gaming Matters

Now reader, to say that I was thrilled to even be having this conversation with Winnie would be an understatement. Two of my worlds collided. The beauty journalist and the gamer, both desperately trying to contain their excitement. I know, sounds dramatic, but to me, this isn’t just another feature added to your average video game.

Much like many of my fellow gamers, I have a very special relationship with The Sims franchise. In fact, I’d say that this game defined my early years as a gamer. As an introverted 12-year-old, I wanted the one thing that all teenage girls dreamt of – to grow up (fast).

That said, I didn’t channel that in quite the same way as today’s Drunk-Elephant-obsessed tweens do through their extensive skincare routines. Instead, I installed a simulation video game and created a character, who then of course ended up having a job, getting married, having kids and even being kidnapped by aliens (if you know, you know). Little did I know that The Sims would lead to a long-term love of video gaming, which then, in turn, led me to interviewing Winnie Harlow.

But having been a gamer for over a decade now, I’ve also discovered that one of the longest-running issues in the industry is the lack of diversity and representation that has echoed throughout, from the people in charge to character creation.

  • Winnie Harlow Shimmers in a Fringe Minidress With a Boob-Window Cutout

Vogue World: London was not ready for Winnie Harlow. As dozens of celebrities said farewell to New York Fashion Week on Sept. 14, Harlow was 3,500 miles away in quite the party dress. With a backless silhouette and boob-window cutout, the fuzzy dress, designed by Cult Naked, was covered in technicolor fringe that shimmered as she strutted past the paparazzi in her translucent Barbie-foot heels.

Harlow, who recently debuted a new pixie cut, looked incredible as she hit the party with a chrome handbag on her arm. The model’s see-through shoes featured bedazzled ankle straps that glistened from every angle and beautifully complemented her dress. Playing with texture, the fuzzy outfit boasted layers of multi-hued fringe in shades of blue, purple, and pink.

From the front, the halter-neck dress called attention to the bodice with a massive boob-window cutout in the shape of a teardrop. From behind, a set of criss-crossed black straps held the revealing ensemble in place. Harlow kept the sparkling theme going with a set of diamond drop earrings and a matching statement ring.

Earlier in the day, Harlow arrived at the event in a low-cut evening gown from Zuhair Murad’s fall 2023 couture collection. In contrast to the all-black silhouette, the design featured a voluminous, cape-like collar that doubled as a train on the red carpet. She styled the stunning, couture gown with silver jewelry and velvet evening gloves. Paired with her second look of the night, it’s clear that Harlow was living the best of both worlds.

Even as cooler weather approaches, Harlow is among many celebrities who continue to nail the cutout trend regardless of the occasion. Other stars who have incorporated cutouts into their wardrobe recently include Issa Rae in a boob-window cutout design at the “Barbie” premiere in July and Brie Larson in a romantic, ab-window slip dress by Rodarte. Celebrities like Heidi Klum and Lori Harvey have also gotten creative with hip cutouts on the red carpet, while Bebe Rexha recently took it a step further with purposefully placed butt cutouts at the MTV VMAs.

Ahead, admire Harlow’s fuzzy minidress from all angles, and see more of our favorite trends from Fashion Week here.

  • Winnie Harlow’s See-Through Fishnet Dress Is Giving Off Major Mermaid Vibes

Winnie Harlow’s See-Through Fishnet Dress Is Giving Off Major Mermaid Vibes

    [ad_1]

Winnie Harlow is the latest celebrity to embrace the naked dress trend, but the model found a way to put her own spin on the style. In celebration of her 29th birthday, Harlow donned a see-through, beige fishnet dress featuring subtle starfish detailing. The model then took her mermaid theme a step further with nautical accessories including oversize starfish earrings, a snail-shaped clutch, and a golden shell necklace.

In addition to the clear nautical theme, Harlow also made a statement with neutrals. Her beige dress included touches of coral and ivory, thanks to the starfish, while her accessories and sandals were all gold. She did mix in a touch of color with the tiny purple flowers that adorned her braided updo, but overall, her outfit made a splash while sticking to a muted but glam color palette.

Even her makeup was subtle. The model opted for bronze colors paired with a shimmery touch on her eyelids. Meanwhile, her manicure was clear with touches of white-and-pearl embellishments in keeping with her mermaidcore vibes.

Just in case there was any doubt about where Harlow drew her outfit inspiration from, she shared several photos from her birthday celebration on Instagram, alongside a caption that made it clear her ensemble was inspired by “The Little Mermaid.” She wrote, “This little mermaid must chop life. 29 so far is filled with love.”

Harlow is far from the first celeb to step out in a naked dress this summer. Other celebrities who have wowed with the daring trend include Megan Fox, Dua Lipa, Shay Mitchell, and Ciara. While naked dresses are by nature see-through, they come in a wide variety of designs, including sheer material, beaded designs, and the fishnet style that Harlow pulled off so seamlessly at her birthday party.

Take a closer look at Harlow’s mermaid-inspired naked dress ensemble ahead.
