  • One Safe Place resource center for crime victims opens in National City

A new resource center offering a variety of services for crime victims opened its doors in National City Friday.

One Safe Place: the South Bay Family Justice Center provides no-cost services for victims of domestic violence, child abuse, sexual assault, human trafficking, hate crimes, elder abuse and other crimes.

Among the services offered at One Safe Place are forensic sexual assault examinations, child forensic interviews, volunteer attorney support for restraining orders, crisis intervention and safety planning for victims of domestic violence, human trafficking and elder abuse.

The center is the second One Safe Place location after the initial center opened in San Marcos in 2022. Officials say the South Bay location will help crime victims living in South San Diego County receive the services they need without needing to cross the county.

“The opening of One Safe Place in National City is an important step forward for our South County families,” said San Diego County Supervisor Paloma Aguirre. “For too long, South County residents in crisis had to travel far from home to access critical victim services. This changes that. This center ensures that survivors who live in South San Diego have access to the care, compassion, and the justice they deserve.”

One Safe Place is led by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, in collaboration with dozens of organizations. Staff at both One Safe Place locations include victim advocates, nurses, medical professionals, counselors, attorneys, housing navigators, childcare professionals, work-readiness coaches, law enforcement and more.

The D.A.’s Office said since its opening, the North County location has served over 9,000 people, primarily domestic violence victims, and has provided legal services for 5,500 people, more than 900 forensic interviews and over 700 forensic medical examinations for assault victims.

“This dream project to regionalize the evidence-based Family Justice Center model to protect crime victims, safeguard children and seniors from harm, prevent homelessness driven by domestic violence and human trafficking, and dismantle generational cycles of trauma that lead to incarceration and victimization has now become a reality for our South County region,” San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan said in a statement.

One Safe Place in National City is located at 401 Mile of Cars Way and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the second Saturday of each month from 8 a.m. to noon.

Either location can be reached by emailing gethope@OSPsandiegocounty.gov or calling 888-440-HOPE (4673).

  • Argentine victims of live-streamed murder laid to rest on eve of protest

    [ad_1]

Shocked and in tears, relatives on Friday laid to rest two women and a girl whose live-streamed torture and murder caused an outcry in Argentina, where activists are planning a weekend protest against femicide.

The bodies of Morena Verdi and Brenda Del Castillo, cousins aged 20, and 15-year-old Lara Gutierrez were found buried Wednesday in the yard of a house in a southern suburb of Buenos Aires, five days after they went missing.

The crime, which investigators have tied to narco activity, was perpetrated live on Instagram and watched by 45 members of a private account, officials said.

Investigators said the victims, thinking they were going to a party, were lured into a van last Friday night, allegedly as part of a plan to “punish” them for violating a gang code, and as a warning to others.

Police discovered the Instagram broadcast after one of four detainees — two men and two women — revealed it under questioning, according to Javier Alonso, security minister for Buenos Aires province.

In the footage, a gang leader is heard saying: “This is what happens to those who steal drugs from me.”

Argentine media are reporting the torturers cut off fingers, pulled out nails, beat and suffocated the victims.

On Friday, dozens of people accompanied a mourning procession to a cemetery outside the capital where a private burial for Verdi and Del Castillo was held.

Gutierrez was laid to rest in a different location.

“I went to where the two little coffins were, side by side, and there I was able to cry more, and I promised them that I would find out who did this, because they destroyed the bodies, Antonio Del Castillo, grandfather of Brenda and Morena, told AFP.

“Holding a wake for a family member with the coffin closed is very painful for me, very painful,” he added.

    – No bad victims –

“They were with the wrong people at the wrong time, and that’s all. They had nothing to do with it,” Federico Celedon, Morena and Brenda’s cousin, told AFP.

He said that Brenda had a one-year-old son who will now be cared for by his grandparents.

Rights groups have called for demonstrations around the country Saturday under the banner: “There are no good or bad victims, only femicides,” in an apparent allusion to the victims’ reported involvement in sex work.

Maria Eugenia Luduena, director of the Presentes rights NGO, told AFP the victims were youngsters with few options, coming as they did from a poor background.

“We are talking about three very young women, one of them 15 years old, who, according to various reports, were summoned to an event related to sex work,” Luduena said.

“The lack of work and the economic crisis we live in today affects women more,” allowing criminal networks to take advantage of them, she said.

A lawyer for the youngest victim’s family, Gonzalo Fuenzalida, said they had received death threats and he will seek police protection.

Dozens of political, cultural and social leaders have spoken out against the crime and called for an end to gender-based violence.

A man nicknamed “Little J” or “Julito,” believed to be the head of the gang behind the murders, is on the run.

  • Multiple victims in Minneapolis Catholic school shooting and suspect reportedly dead

    [ad_1]

Police responded to an active shooter incident at a Catholic school in south Minneapolis on Wednesday, with sources confirming there are multiple victims and that the shooter is now dead.

Crews at the scene reported seeing a large number of ambulances, according to CBS. Sources told ABC News that there are multiple victims from a shooting that took place during morning drop-off at Annunciation Catholic school in Minneapolis.

The city of Minneapolis’s official X account said there is “no active threat to the community at this time” as of 10:29am EST.

“The shooter is contained. Stay away from the area to allow emergency personnel to help victims – W. 54th Street between Lyndale and Nicollet Ave,” the city wrote.

The suspect is reportedly dead, according to Fox 9. The outlet also reported that the first call to law enforcement went through at 8.27am local time, shortly after a mass for students was slated to kick off at 8.15am.

The police department from Richfield, a suburb that borders Minneapolis, told Fox 9 there were 20 victims. It was unclear how many, if any, were dead.

“A man dressed in all black and armed with a rifle was reported at the scene,” the Richfield police department said.

Minnesota’s governor, Tim Walz, said he’d been “briefed on a shooting at Annunciation Catholic school” on Wednesday morning and would “continue to provide updates as we get more information”.

“The [Bureau of Criminal Apprehension] and State Patrol are on scene. I’m praying for our kids and teachers whose first week of school was marred by this horrific act of violence,” he wrote on X.

Minneapolis’s mayor, Jacob Frey, said he is “monitoring reports of horrific violence in south Minneapolis” and the “emergency response team has been activated”. Frey was also at the scene at around 10:15am EST.

The US secretary of homeland security, Kristi Noem, said on X that the Department of Homeland Security is monitoring the shooting.

“We are in communication with our interagency partners, and will share more information as soon as it becomes available. I am praying for the victims of this heinous attack and their families,” Noem said.

Donald Trump also said on Truth Social on Wednesday morning that he’s been “fully briefed on the tragic shooting” and that the “White House will continue to monitor this terrible situation. Please join me in praying for everyone involved!”

The Hennepin county sheriff’s office said in a statement that it was “actively assisting the Minneapolis Police Department and other law enforcement agencies” and urged “all residents to stay out of the affected area to allow emergency responders to operate effectively”.

“This is an evolving situation and we will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. Our hearts go out to all those impacted by this act of violence,” it said.

Wednesday’s incident marks the fourth shooting in 24 hours in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Over the course of Tuesday into Wednesday, three people were shot and killed in three separate shootings. At least eight people also suffered gunshot wounds in those incidents.

Monday, we expect to see a new sketch of one of the Gilgo Beach victims, an Asian male whose remains were recovered along ocean parkway in April 2011.

There is a sketch that was previously released in the investigation.

Investigators found 10 other bodies in the search for missing sex worker Shannan Gilbert on a stretch of beach along Long Island’s South Shore.

He was first charged with the deaths of women known as the “Gilgo Four” — Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes and Amber Costello — whose bodies were found covered in burlap in December 2010, according to court records.

Earlier this year, investigators charged Heuermann with the murders of two more women — the 2003 murder of Jessica Taylor, whose remains were found on Gilgo Beach and in Manorville, and the 1993 murder of Sandra Costilla, whose remains were found in North Sea, Long Island, in 1993.

Heuermann has pleaded not guilty to their murders.

  • Vigil held for CPS students shot near Senn High School in Edgewater

Vigil held for CPS students shot near Senn High School in Edgewater

    [ad_1]

A quiet crowd held a vigil Thursday evening along the narrow street at the spot where Senn High School student Daveon Gibson was shot and killed the day before. Gibson, 16, was walking with two other Senn students, who were shot and wounded.

Bouquets of white, pink and yellow flowers lay on a pink heart drawn on the sidewalk with chalk. “You Matter to Us” was chalked next to the heart.

More than 50 people gathered to remember Gibson of Humboldt Park, starting the night with a prayer. Edgewater neighbors and friends joined to tell stories and advocate for safer streets for students walking to and from the high school in the Edgewater neighborhood on the North Side.

Peg Dublin did not witness the shooting Wednesday, but she told the crowd how her daughter-in-law, who lives nearby, held Daveon in her arms after he was shot, as he was dying. Her daughter-in-law was “not doing well” and was still shaken by the tragedy, Dublin said.

“She held him in her arms until he died, and she will never be the same again, as will the family never be the same again,” Dublin said.

The three victims were walking in the 1200 block of West Thorndale Avenue, just east of Senn High School, when gunmen inside a vehicle got out and opened fire on the teens around 4 p.m. Wednesday. The shooting has been ruled a homicide, according to the Chicago Police Department. But by Thursday evening, there were no suspects in custody as detectives were still investigating.

During the vigil, Dublin called on the community to help protect students walking in the neighborhood, particularly the stretch of Thorndale Avenue between Senn High School and the Thorndale CTA “L” stop, which many students take after school.

“I feel like if we can create a safe passage, we can show these kids that we care,” Dublin said.

In the hours leading up to the 30-minute vigil, there was a strong police presence along that stretch of Thorndale Avenue, with several Chicago police cars and uniformed officers standing on the sidewalk.

Matt Sweetman, pastor of Trinity Church and a father of two boys,14 and 16, called on fathers to step up to protect young boys from gun violence on the streets of the city.

“Men need to take a strong interest in the lives of young boys and young boys that come from broken situations,” he said. “That is one thing that maybe some of us can do.”

The shooting occurred in front of the doorsteps of Trinity Church, and Sweetman’s two sons were five minutes down the block when they heard shots. His 16-year-old son played basketball with Daveon but did not know the student closely, he said.

Sweetman encouraged the crowd of Edgewater residents to come forward with details to the police.

He then led them in singing “Amazing Grace” as they held candles.

Several participants said they went to Senn High School and described a school community filled with good kids.

“The light will never go out in this community,” said Andrea Raila, who lives in the area and attended summer school at Senn.

After the service wrapped up, people milled around, hugging each other and stopping to sign a cardboard stand with “Daveon” before walking home.

The shooting came nearly a week after two teens were fatally shot after leaving high school in the Loop. There was no evidence the shootings were related, according to CPD

California Implements New Cryptocurrency Laws to Combat Bitcoin ATM Scams

    [ad_1]

Bitcoin (BTC) ATMs have become both convenient and worrying, with scammers taking advantage of unsuspecting victims. Authorities in the US and other jurisdictions are now waging a war against crypto-ATM-based scams.

California takes a stance on new cryptocurrency laws

The state of California has introduced rules for cryptocurrency transactions. Senate Bill 401, signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, means you can only make $1,000 worth of cryptocurrency transactions at ATMs each day, and starting in 2025, the maximum they can charge you is $5, or 15% of the transaction. Whichever is higher.

Initially, some Bitcoin ATMs allowed up to $50,000 in transactions with fees ranging between 12% and 25% above the value of the digital asset. These changes are intended to protect people from scams and high fees, explained Sen. Monique Lemon, one of the co-authors.

Scammers taking advantage of the convenience of Bitcoin ATMs have been a growing concern, with the Federal Trade Commission reporting that more than 46,000 people have lost more than $1 billion to cryptocurrency scams since 2021. New transaction limits give victims more time to spot scams before loss of money. But Charles Bell of the Blockchain Advocacy Coalition worries that these rules could hurt the cryptocurrency industry and small businesses.

FBI Alerts About Bitcoin ATM and QR Code Scams

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has raised the alarm about fraudulent schemes exploiting ATMs for cryptocurrencies and quick response (QR) codes for payments. These schemes take various forms, including online impersonation, romance scams, and lottery fraud, all using cryptocurrency ATMs and QR codes as tools.

QR codes, which smartphone cameras can scan, simplify cryptocurrency payments. However, criminals are now using it to trick victims into paying money. Victims are often asked to withdraw money from their accounts and use a QR code provided by scammers to complete transactions at physical cryptocurrency ATMs.

Once the victim makes the payment, the cryptocurrency is transferred to the scammer’s wallet, making recovery nearly impossible due to the decentralized nature of cryptocurrencies. The FBI offers several tips to protect against these schemes, focusing on caution, verification, and avoiding cryptocurrency ATM transactions that promise anonymity using only a phone number or email.

    Cryptocurrency regulation efforts in California

The passage of Senate Bill 401 in California is part of a broader effort to regulate the cryptocurrency industry while protecting consumers. Another law, scheduled to take effect in July 2025, will require digital financial asset companies to obtain licenses from the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation. This represents a clear shift towards tightening government regulation and oversight in the world of digital finance.

Gavin Newsom’s decision to sign these bills into law demonstrates California’s commitment to strengthening the cryptocurrency industry and protecting its citizens. Balancing innovation and security remains a challenge, especially in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Bitcoin Depot’s historic debut on the NASDAQ

In July, Bitcoin Depot, a leading bitcoin ATM operator, went public on the Nasdaq. This milestone comes after Bitcoin Depot merged with GSR II Meteora, a blank check company.

The move to go public demonstrates the growing legitimacy and acceptance of cryptocurrencies in major financial markets.

    Authorities vs. illegal crypto ATMs

The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is taking a strong stance against illegal cryptocurrency ATM operators. Using its power under money laundering regulations, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has carried out raids on cryptocurrency ATMs suspected of illegal activities across England.

The measures, which follow previous operations in east London and Leeds, are part of the Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) efforts to crack down on unregulated cryptocurrency operations. This highlights global pressure for stronger cryptocurrency regulation, mirroring steps taken in California. The balance between innovation and security remains a fundamental concern for regulatory bodies around the world.

Man Crushed by Boulder on Hike Returns to Raise Money for Families and Victims of Human Trafficking

    [ad_1]

A Phoenix Pastor and his daughter raised $1.8 million for families in need and victims of human trafficking, after being crushed by an 8,000-pound boulder.

    Press Release

    Nov 21, 2022

Pastor Luke Barnett and his daughter, Annalee, set out two years ago to hike the world-famous, 800-mile Arizona Trail. The two were hiking in an effort to raise $1 million to help the Short Creek Dream Center support families and individuals in need of housing, provide food resources to families in need and offer refuge to victims of abuse in Colorado City, AZ (the town featured in the Netflix docuseries, Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey). Luke and Annalee were 500 miles into the hike when an 8,000-pound boulder came bombing down toward Annalee. Heroically, Luke pushed his daughter out of the way, saving her, and, in turn, was crushed and dragged by the boulder himself. Narrowly escaping with his life, Luke was airlifted with multiple broken bones, including a broken femur, three broken ribs, and a nearly severed finger, spent nine days in the hospital, and encouraged Annalee to continue the hike without him.

This story broke internationally and allowed the hikers to raise over $1.8 million in support of the Short Creek Dream Center and Short Creek community.

Now, Luke Barnett is back on the Arizona Trail and determined to complete the last 300 miles of the hike. He wants to accomplish the feat that the boulder robbed them of two years ago and, most importantly, continue to raise money and awareness to support the Dream Center’s efforts in the Short Creek community to help survivors of abuse, human trafficking, domestic violence and provide critical resources to families in need.

  • 69% of Scam Victims Make No Effort to Recover Their Money

69% of Scam Victims Make No Effort to Recover Their Money

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    Jun 30, 2022

The Global Anti Scam Alliance and ScamAdviser surveyed 2,575 consumers from across the world asking them about their experience with trying to get their money back from scammers.

Curiously, most of the victims have reported being from Asia (39%) and Africa (32%). This goes to show that not only do several scams originate in those places, but scammers may be victimizing more people domestically than internationally.

Most money is lost to Investment Scams

Investment scams (40%) seem to be the most common scams that consumers are getting trapped in. This is followed by Shopping Scams (15%), Money Recovery Scams (13%), and Job Scams (10%). Consumers are also losing money to Subscription Scams (7%), Romance Scams (5%) and Phishing (4%).

Individual losses are not large but seriously impact victims

Most of the survey participants lost less than $100 (32%). 11% lost a huge sum of money ($5,000 to $10,000) and 7% did not lose any money. However, 66% said that getting scammed had a significant negative impact on their finances.

Victims lost money majorly through Cryptocurrency

The payment methods most favored by scammers are Cryptocurrency (29.8%) and bank transfer (21.1%). Scammers also favor Credit Card (12.4%) and Electronic Money Transfer (11.9%).

68.8% of the victims did not try to get their money back

Not only did most victims not try to recover their funds, but it was also further reported that 66.1% of the victims who tried to recover their money failed to get it back.

Even those who recovered their money were not always able to get the entire amount back as 14.4% said that they only got a partial refund. It is interesting to note, however, that more consumers were successful at getting a full refund (19.4%) than a partial refund (14.4%).

Most victims do not know how to get their money back

The main reason cited for not attempting to get a refund is that the victim did not know how to get their money back. A considerable portion also said that they did not try to recover the money as they did not think they would get it back even after trying (31.5%).

Victims first approach the scammer for a refund

Among the consumers who did try to get their money back, they did so by approaching the scammer (31.9%) and their bank (28.3%). 16.7% approached the crypto exchange while 10.7% sought the help of money recovery services. Only 7.7% reported it to law enforcement. 3.4% tried taking legal action.

40.1% agreed that getting money back from the scammer was easy

On the brighter side, only 39% disagreed that it was easy to recover their money after being scammed.
