  • Man charged in Minneapolis crash involving train had BAC over twice the legal limit, charges say

    [ad_1]

A 33-year-old man is accused of having a blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit hours after a crash involving a train in Minneapolis last October, according to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday.

Police say officers responded to the collision near Central Avenue Northeast and Columbia Parkway around 2:32 a.m. They saw a freight train traveling across the tracks, and two heavily damaged vehicles — a Cadillac Escalade and Toyota Rav4 — the court documents filed with Hennepin County said.

The Cadillac was stopped at the train crossing when the Toyota, later identified as being driven by the Columbia Heights, Minnesota, man, rear-ended it at high speed, according to the complaint. The impact resulted in both SUVs hitting the passing train.

Court documents said the driver of the Cadillac was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. A passenger of the same vehicle reported having glass in her face and mouth.

Paramedics at the scene said the man, who sustained serious injuries, appeared intoxicated and an officer saw he had bloodshot eyes and “different sized pupils,” according to the complaint.

The man was taken to the hospital where a blood draw, administered around four hours after the collision, showed he had a blood alcohol concentration of .223, court documents said.

The speedometer of the Toyota was “locked” at 68-69 mph after the crash, and the Cadillac driver estimated the man was driving between 85 and 90 mph before the incident, the complaint said. The posted speed limit at the scene is 30 mph.

According to court documents, the man was not in custody on Wednesday.

  • Spain train crash death toll rises as nation mourns its worst rail disaster in more than a decade

    [ad_1]

Spain began three days of national mourning on Tuesday for 41 people killed after two high-speed trains collided in the country’s deadliest rail disaster in over a decade.

The collision took place late Sunday when a high-speed train operated by rail company Iryo, travelling from Malaga to Madrid, derailed near Adamuz in the southern Andalusia region.

It crossed onto the other track, where it crashed into an oncoming train, which also derailed.

A crashed train remains on the train tracks on January 19, 2026 after yesterday’s train collision in Adamuz, Spain.

The death toll rose to 41 after the body of another passenger was recovered Monday evening from one of the Iryo train carriages, the regional government said. More than 120 people were injured, and 39 were still hospitalized on Tuesday, including four children, it added.

Flags flew at half-mast on public buildings, television anchors wore black, and cabinet ministers curtailed public appearances as Spain observed the first of three days of national mourning. Members of the Assembly of Extremadura, the neighboring region, held a minute’s silence for the victims of the accident Tuesday morning.

Heavy machinery was deployed Monday to lift the most severely damaged train carriages and give rescuers better access.

The head of Andalusia’s regional government, Juan Manuel Moreno, warned Monday that it would take another 24-48 hours “to know with certainty how many deaths have resulted from this terrible accident.”

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia were scheduled to meet with rescuers and officials in Adamuz later on Tuesday.

  • Death toll rises to 39 after high-speed train crash in Spain

    [ad_1]

The death toll following a high-speed train crash in southern Spain has risen to at least 39, state broadcaster RTVE reported on Monday, citing the Guardia Civil police force.

A total of 73 people were treated at hospitals following the collision, including 24 who were seriously injured, RTVE said. Four of those seriously hurt are minors, according to the broadcaster.

Two high-speed trains collided at around 7:40 pm on Sunday near the town of Adamuz in the Andalusian province of Córdoba, Spanish rail operator Renfe said.

An Iryo train carrying more than 300 people, operated by the Italian company Trenitalia derailed and came to rest on the adjacent track, Renfe said. An oncoming Renfe train with about 200 onboard was passing at that precise moment, smashing into the Iryo train and also derailing.

  • Head-on train collision near Peru’s Machu Picchu kills at least 1, injures 40

    [ad_1]

A head-on collision between two trains on the line that services Peru’s Machu Picchu killed one person and injured at least 40 others, authorities said.

The deceased was the conductor of one of the two trains, according to the prosecutor’s office in Cusco, the city closest to the famous Inca citadel.

The U.S. Embassy in Peru said in a statement that there were U.S. citizens among the injured. It did not indicate how many Americans were hurt or the extent of their injuries.

Videos sent by passengers to the RPP television channel showed injured victims lying next to the tracks with two damaged locomotives standing idle nearby.

A dozen ambulances and medical personnel were rushed to the site in a remote Andean area without direct road access.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, the ancient, fortified complex receives some 4,500 visitors on average each day, many of them foreigners, according to the tourism ministry.

Most tourists take a train and a bus to reach the historic site high in the Andes mountains.

Rail agency Ferrocarril Transandino said a train operated by PeruRail collided with another belonging to Inca Rail around lunchtime on the single track that links the town of Ollantaytambo with Machu Picchu. The cause of the accident was not yet known.

Machu Picchu was built in the 15th century at an altitude of about 8,200 feet on orders from the Inca ruler Pachacutec. It is considered a marvel of architecture and engineering.

  • BNSF Railway conductor struck and killed by a train in Montana

    [ad_1]

Authorities were investigating the death of a rail conductor who was hit by a passing train Sunday in Montana, the National Transportation Safety Board said.

The conductor worked for BNSF Railway, the agency said in a post on social media. BNSF Railway operates one of the largest freight railway networks in the U.S.

The incident occurred at about 9:40 a.m. in Columbus, a town of about 2,000 people 40 miles southwest of Billings.

Emergency response officials weren’t sure what happened other than that an individual was between two trains, said Nick Jacobs, Columbus Fire Rescue’s assistant chief. One train was parked on one track and the other train was moving on another track, he said.

“And the moving one struck him somehow,” Jacobs said.

BNSF investigators were on scene, as well as Columbus Police and Stillwater County Sheriff deputies, CBS affiliate KTVQ reported. The NTSB and Federal Railroad Administration officials were also at the scene, Jacobs said.

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board, Columbus police and Stillwater County Sheriff deputies are on the scene of an train-related accident Sunday, Oct. 19, 2025, in Columbus, MT.

Larry Mayer/The Billings Gazette via AP

A spokesperson for BNSF said the company was referring all questions to the NTSB.

The identity of the deceased was not immediately released.

The accident caused an hours-long road closure at one of the busiest crossings in the area, KTVQ reported.

“You can see how fast the cars build up here,” nearby resident Robert Carlson told the station. “It’s unusual, but, you know, where trains are concerned, you never know when there’s going to be a problem or accident or collision.”

A report by the Federal Railroad Administration last year found BNSF was generally striving to improve safety on a consistent basis, but that message didn’t always reach front-line workers who often didn’t feel comfortable reporting safety concerns for fear of being disciplined.

The agency prepared the report as part of an effort to review all major railroads to address safety concerns after a Norfolk Southern train derailed in East Palestine, Ohio in 2023. Last year, Norfolk Southern agreed to pay $600 million in a class-action lawsuit settlement related to the derailment.

MANSFIELD TWP., New Jersey — One person is dead and 16 others are injured after a train accident Monday morning in New Jersey.

It happened just after 6 a.m. on the New Jersey River Line Light Rail track near US 130 in Mansfield Township.

The train was traveling southbound from Trenton when it struck a tree just north of Roebling Station.

The train operator was killed, according to officials.

The train had 42 customers on board at the time of the incident. Of the passengers, 23 sustained non-life-threatening injuries, which are said to be mostly minor. The other 19 were accommodated by a bus.

A large piece of a tree could be seen under the front of the train.

People were also seen being removed from the scene on stretchers.

NJ Transit River Line is suspended in both directions between Florence and Trenton. A substitute bus service is being provided.

Route 130 southbound between Burlington and Kinkora roads is also closed.

ABC Philadelphia affiliate WPVI spoke with people who live nearby, who said they say they’ve never seen anything like this.

“We’ve never heard of an accident since the beginning. We’ve been here for about 40 years and we never never heard of an accident with the River Line,” a nearby neighbor said.

“We heard all the ambulance, the helicopters and we had to come down here to see and they told us that the River Line derailed, unfortunately, and some people may be hurt or possibly dead,” said another neighbor. “So keep everyone in your prayers [and] let everyone be ok.”

There is a staging area for the families of those injured at the River Front Motel.

New Jersey Transit Police are on scene and investigating.

India train crash leaves at least 8 dead, dozens injured as freight train plows into passenger train

    [ad_1]

New Delhi — At least eight people were killed and more than 50 others injured when a freight train slammed into a passenger train Monday in India. The crash happened in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, when the goods train hit the Kanchanjunga Express in the New Jalpaiguri area, derailing at least three of the passenger train’s cars.

The Kanchanjunga Express was travelling from Silchar in Assam state to Sealdah in Kolkata when the collision occurred.

Stark images broadcast on Indian TV news channels showed hundreds of people watching rescuers try to save passengers trapped in the mangled train cars, one of which was left jutting up into the air at a steep angle.

India’s national NDTV network said the relatively low death toll, given the severity of the crash, could be due to the fact that the freight train slammed into the rear carriages of the passenger train, which were not believed to be carrying passengers.

“Five people, including the loco[motive] pilot of the Kanchanjunga Express, died on the spot. Twenty-five people are injured,” Abhishek Roy, Additional Superintendent of Police for the Darjeeling Police District, told reporters at the scene, adding that efforts to rescue people trapped in the train continued.

Officials later raised the confirmed death toll to eight.

The accident forced a suspension of all train services on the Kolkata-Siliguri line, officials said.

“The rescue work is complete,” Jaya Verma Sinha, chairperson of the Indian Railway Board told reporters, adding that injured victims were being provided “the best possible treatment.”

Sinha said human error appeared likely to have caused the accident, as “it seems that the driver of the goods train disregarded the signal.”

A detailed investigation was expected to confirm the cause of the fatal crash.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the crash “saddening” and announced informal government relief payments of 200,000 Indian rupees (about $2,400) for the families of people killed in the incident and 50,000 rupees (about $600) for those left injured.

Indian Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced separate state compensation of 1 million rupees (about $12,000) for each family that had someone killed in the crash, and 250,000 rupees (about $3,000) for those injured.

India has one of the largest rail networks on the planet, but accidents are common. In June 2023, one of India’s deadliest train accidents, involving three trains in the eastern state of Odisha, killed almost 300 people and left more than 1,000 others injured.

  • Advocates share pedestrian railroad safety tips

Advocates share pedestrian railroad safety tips

    [ad_1]

ALBANY COUNTY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — After two fatal train accidents over the weekend, railroad safety officials want to remind everyone to stay safe around train tracks. In 2022, more than 40 railroad crashes occurred in New York, causing three deaths and seventeen injuries, according to the Federal Railroad Administration. And rail passenger advocates like Steve Strauss, Executive Director of the Empire State Passengers Association, said the numbers have been worsening.

“The train speeds in the Albany area are among the highest in the state. Because Amtrak controls a lot of that right of way,” Strauss said. “People should never cross tracks except at signalized intersections.

The non-profit group New York Operation Life Saver provides safety courses for first responders and bus drivers from instructors in the railroad industry. Their website also shares safety videos on what a driver must do if stuck on the tracks, along with pedestrian safety tips. For example, pedestrians should walk on paved railroad trails instead of along the railroad tracks.

During his courses, Phil Merens, State Coordinator of New York Operation Life Saver, said he shares a sobering fact with conductors and engineers.

“If you drive a train for ten years, there’s a great chance that you…your train…will hit and kill somebody,” he said.

Merens said the accident would not be the driver’s fault since it takes a mile or more for a train to stop at 55 miles per hour. He also shared that even though about a third of accidents are from suicides, the rest are due to either a person being distracted while listening to music or being under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

“So by the time an engineer sees somebody, the only thing they can do is put it into emergency mode, and usually we’re sitting right by a crossing, and you can see about a ¼ of a mile in each direction,” Merens said. “That’s obviously not enough to stop.”

Railroad advocates share that the best thing the public can do when seeing any track is immediately think a train could be coming and look both ways.

“We’re in a modern age with precise engineering has made trains-they’re still incredibly powerful- but they’re much more silent, much quieter any you don’t hear them,” Phil Merens said. “You just don’t hear them until they are right on top of you.”

Train carrying hazardous materials derails in Maine

    [ad_1]

A freight train carrying hazardous materials derailed and caught fire Saturday morning in Rockwood, Maine, fire officials said. However, none of the hazardous materials aboard caught fire, according to railroad officials.

A spokesperson for Canadian Pacific Kansas City Limited (CPKC) told CBS News in a statement that the train derailed at about 8:30 a.m. Eastern time due to a “track washout” in a rural wooded area about 15 miles east of the town of Jackman. A “track washout” often happens after heavy rain and washes away ballast and roadway under the track.

Rockwood Fire and Rescue posted a photo of the derailment Saturday on its Facebook page and advised residents “to stay clear!”

The CPKC spokesperson said there were “no evacuations and no threat to public safety.” It was still unclear if there were injuries in the derailment.

A train derailed in Rockwood, Maine. April 15, 2023.

    Rockwood Fire & Rescue

According to CPKC, the derailment sparked a fire involving three locomotives and train cars carrying lumber, but said that none of the cars carrying hazardous materials were involved in the fire.

“We are coordinating with local first responders who are on scene,” CPKC said. “Our emergency response teams and hazardous materials experts have responded and continue to conduct a full assessment of the situation.”

Rockwood is in the north-central part of the state in a mostly rural area. It’s near Moosehead Lake, one of the largest bodies of freshwater in the state.

The derailment is the latest one to plague the rail industry. Federal regulators and members of Congress are urging railroads to do more to prevent derailments after recent fiery wrecks involving hazardous chemicals in Ohio and Minnesota prompted evacuations.

Police opened an investigation to establish if any crime was committed. Another independent probe was opened into the cause of the crash.

Television images showed people using temporary bridges and ladders to cross a narrow drainage canal running alongside the rails to reach the stricken train in the darkness. Many windows in the train carriages were broken. It was not clear if that happened during the accident or as passengers attempted to escape.

Two of the bright yellow and blue train carriages came to rest perpendicular to the tracks across the small canal and partially in a field. What appeared to be the front of the train was badly damaged. Other parts of the train were partially derailed.

Video from inside the train in the immediate aftermath of the crash showed chaotic scenes as passengers tried to get out of the wreckage in darkness.

The four-carriage passenger train was carrying about 50 passengers at the time of the crash.

John Voppen, CEO of the rail network company Pro Rail, said that the passenger train and a freight train both hit a crane that was being used to carry out maintenance work. He said the crane was on tracks that were not being used by train traffic and it is not clear how the trains collided with the crane.

“We don’t understand how this could have happened,” he told reporters at a news conference.

The identity of the person killed in the accident was not immediately released and it was not clear if the person was on the train or part of the maintenance team that had been at work on the rails between the cities of Leiden and The Hague when the crash happened around 3:25 a.m. local time in the town of Voorschoten.

Railway company NS also said in a statement that a passenger train, a freight train and a construction crane were involved in a collision, but the company gave no further details.

“Like everyone else, I’m full of questions and we want to know exactly what happened,” NS CEO Wouter Koolmees said in a statement. “A thorough investigation must be carried out. At the moment, all attention is focused on the wellbeing of our travelers and colleagues.”

The regional coordinator of emergency services said that 11 of the injured passengers were treated in homes near the line and 19 were transported in a fleet of ambulances to five hospitals, including a “calamity hospital” opened in the central city of Utrecht.

“A terrible train accident near Voorschoten, where unfortunately one person died and many people were injured. My thoughts are with the relatives and with all the victims. I wish them all the best,” Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said in a tweet.

Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima also expressed their sympathy in a tweet.

Ingrid de Roos, a spokeswoman for local fire services, told news show WNL that a small fire broke out at the rear of the train but was quickly extinguished.
