    Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 punctuated the ending to arguably one of Marvel’s best trilogy films (don’t @ me) with an emotionally gratifying final needle drop that had its titular characters, the fans, and even the musician behind the song ugly-crying with happiness. Minor spoilers ahead.

    The Week In Games: Return To Hyrule

    On Monday, Florence Welch, the lead singer of the popular indie rock band Florence and the Machine, uploaded a TikTok video of herself reacting to her song “Dog Days Are Over”, which served as the final song in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. If you’ve already seen the film, which came out over the weekend, listening to the song likely had you grinning with glee through tear-filled eyes just like Welch, because it served as a spectacular send-off to the comic book heroes’ nine-year cinematic journey.

    “So I cried all the way through this movie but when The Guardians of the Galaxy started dancing to ‘Dog Days’ I really lost it,” Welch wrote in her TikTok caption. “Thank you so much for all the love for this moment. The superhero-obsessed little girl in me can’t believe it happened.”

    Every Guardians movie has its perfect song

    Each of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy films packs an emotional gut-punch with its poignant plotlines and an undeniably feel-good bop in its Awesome Mixes. In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1, we saw how Star-Lord’s relationship with his late mother affected his devil-may-care outlook on the universe and his place in it. In Vol. 2, we got to see how Star-Lord’s estranged relationship with his all-powerful father Ego didn’t define the man he could become. The first two movies accentuated key emotional beats with The Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back” and Cat Stevens’ “Father and Son,” respectively.

    In Guardians 3, the camera took its focus off of Star-Lord and instead sheds some much-needed light on the trash-talking Rocket Raccoon, revealing how he came to be the standoffish anti-hero he is today. We’ll spare you any spoilers, but be warned, the two-hour and 30-minute movie does depict gruesome scenes of violence against animals while revealing Rocket’s harrowing backstory. But if you can get past that, the happiness emanating from Guardians 3’s finale will hit you like a train on a track, as Welch’s song puts it.

    Guardians 3 outsold the Mario movie in its opening weekend

    In non-crying-related news, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has rocketed past Nintendo and Illumination Studios’ Super Mario Bros. Movie’s opening weekend haul with a total of $282 million at the box office. For those keeping track, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, also starring actor Chris Pratt, made a total of $137 million during its three-day domestic opening weekend, according to Box Office Mojo.

    The dog days are over for Pratt as well, because after securing the Nintendo and Marvel bag, he’s coming for the Sony bag next year when he offers his voice to the sardonic orange cat, Garfield.

    James Gunn Says Rocket’s Origin Story In ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’ Is ‘Just Chilling’

    The final “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie is going to get dark.

    In a new Rolling Stone article about the third film in the Marvel franchise, director James Gunn  shared that Rocket Raccoon’s origin story will finally be revealed.

    The writer-director shared that among the ensemble of characters in the film Rocket, voiced by Bradley Cooper, is the one he relates to “a very core level.”

    “I was always a kid that didn’t quite belong in the group,” he said. “I was a punk rock kid, but I totally didn’t see everything the way [punks] saw it. Rocket had his own traumas early on. And the way he learned to deal with them was kind of being tougher than leather and mean and angry. And that came in response to the things that you learn happened to him in volume three.”

    Gunn also praised Cooper’s work on “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and teased the darkness that’s in store for the character as his origins come to light.

    “This is the best he’s ever been,” he said of Cooper’s performance. “There’s some stuff in there that’s just chilling.”

    Talking about other aspects of the film, Gunn shared how he was caught off guard by the ending of “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019, which saw Thor venturing off with the Guardians, a plot point that classed with the “Vol. 3” script he’d already written.

    “They chose to have that ending in editing,” he says. “And I didn’t think it was gonna be in there. ‘Endgame’ came out right after I decided to do ‘Guardians’ again. So I didn’t have much say in what was in ‘Endgame’, and then it came out and then I was like, ‘What the fuck am I gonna do?’”

    In the end, the day was saved by Taika Waititi’s “Thor: Love & Thunder”, which ran with the Thor/Guardians team-up and concluded that storyline.

    “To be completely honest, Thor was never going to be in this movie,” Gunn said. “Taika took a bullet for me. Because I was not going to have him in. I was just gonna start up and there’s no Thor.”

    “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” opens in theatres May 5.

    So What’s Going to Happen to Rocket in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’?

    Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 is on the horizon, and it looks like we’re going to get plenty of the brash fan-favorite character Rocket Raccoon. But while more Rocket is always welcome in our lives, the shots we see of him in the trailer are a little disturbing. Is Rocket going to die in the new Guardians movie? Will any of us survive if he doesn’t make it? How are we going to deal with any more bad stuff happening to this little king?

    Here’s everything we know so far!

    The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 trailer hints at Rocket’s death

    The trailer makes it clear that we’ll be getting a lot of Rocket in this movie. We see him as a baby in a cage, shrinking back in fear as a hand reaches in to grab him. We see him hugging an otter, who’s known as Lady Lylla in the comics.

    But then things seem to take a turn for Rocket. He tells Peter he’s “done running,” and then we see him lying on the ground, wounded. As he lies there, he says, “We’ll all fly away together one last time, into the forever, and beautiful sky.”

    Then we see him standing somewhere new, without any armor on, surrounded by white light.

    Rocket, no!! As our Rachel Leishman points out, one possible plot point in the movie could be Rocket falling in love with Lylla, but then sacrificing himself to save the rest of the team. However, other fans are speculating that he could have a close brush with death, but then ride off with Lylla into the interstellar sunset.

    What’s important to remember is that Marvel loves to use their trailers to throw us off the scent. They edit footage in misleading ways, and even include footage that isn’t in the actual movie. Remember when we were all freaking out because it looked like Thor might die in Thor: Love and Thunder? Maybe Marvel won’t throw our hearts out the airlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

    What can we expect in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?

    But then again, this is the last film in the Guardians series, so who knows what dramatic stuff could happen? The trailer is definitely hinting that someone won’t make it out alive. The movie comes out on May 5, 2023, so even if Rocket survives, get ready to ugly cry in the theater.
