    A rescheduled Daytona 500 left some visitors feeling like they missed out because some of them had flights to catch back home during the race.Just as the drivers started racing around the track, some people were racing to Daytona Beach International Airport. “It does suck having to leave the track early,” said Kevin Uszynski, who was visiting from Cleveland. The “Great American Race” was pushed back to Monday at 4 p.m. after it was rained out on Sunday. Uszynski was thankful he at least had a chance to catch the beginning of the race. “I saw like the first five, six laps and the jets were flying over,” Uszynski said. “I took one for the team, and I went and got all of our luggage for me, my brother and my buddy.”Chris Majchrzak and Alyssa Ives were disappointed they had to miss the race because they had to catch their flight back home to Connecticut. “Torturous listening to from the airport,” Ives said.”Absolutely devastated,” Majchrzak said. “We’ll definitely be back next year. Came last year and so I’m really, really bummed out.”Chris Amrhein and Rebecca Arbona had to miss part of their first race, but they were still in good spirits.”It’s been absolutely fantastic. We’re here representing the United States Air Force,” Amrhein said. “The weather is something you just roll with. Having been in the military for a long time, it’s something you plan for and then you work a secondary plan and the team was able to do that.”Amrhein and Arbona were feeling grateful to take an unforgettable Central Florida experience with them as they headed home to San Antonio. “It was a great first opportunity,” Arbona said. “Despite the weather, we had an amazing time. It was beautiful weather today, so I think it all lined up perfectly.”People who plan to return next year for the race say they will surely come prepared. “I’ll take Monday and Tuesday off next year instead of Friday and Monday,” Majchrzak said.     A power outage took out supply to a chunk of Napier’s central business district during a busy retail period with passengers from two cruise ships in town.

    The unscheduled outage hit late morning on Monday and was caused by a suspected cable fault, according to Unison.

    The outage started at 10.41am and power began to return to some businesses by 11.15am, but power supply continued to fluctuate in the city for the next 45 minutes.

    The outage affected about 200 properties on Dickens St, Dalton St, Station St, Emerson St, Hastings St and Marine Parade, among others.

    Some shops and eateries were without power for over an hour. All properties had power returned by noon.

    The outage hit as passengers from two cruise ships, the 3100-passenger cruise ship Grand Princess and the 2770-passenger Resilient Lady, were in town.

    The owner of Kolachi cafe on Emerson St, Jaz Singh, said it was tough timing, and they were forced to close while the power was out and eventually opted not to reopen for the day as it was one of the last areas to have power restored.

    “We have no other option than to close at this point because we don’t know when power is returning,” Singh said during the outage, which hit his cafe for more than an hour.

    A LATAM Airlines flight from Miami to Santiago, Chile, had to make an emergency landing after one of the plane’s pilots suffered an apparent heart attack in the bathroom.

    Midway through the trip, flight attendants discovered Captain Iván Andaur Santibáñez collapsed and unresponsive, prompting the plane’s two co-pilots to land in Panama City.

    A nurse and two doctors boarded the plane but could not resuscitate Andaur.

    “When the plane landed, emergency services provided life-saving help, but the pilot sadly passed away,” the airline told The New York Post. “LATAM Group is deeply saddened by this event and takes this opportunity to express our most sincere condolences to the family of our employee.”

    The nurse, who identified herself only as Isadora, said: “Unfortunately, we did not have the necessary or sufficient supplies to perform a good resuscitation.”

    It was unclear what supplies she was referring to.

    About the flight

    There were 271 passengers aboard LATAM Airlines flight 505, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, according to The Independent. The plane departed Miami at 10:11 pm on Monday. In addition to the three pilots manning the flight during the medical emergency, the flight also had a relief captain and first officer onboard. According to reports, it took the pilots about 30 minutes to land the plane after learning of the incident.

    “They told us that we were going to land because the pilot felt sick, and when we arrived, they asked us to evacuate the plane because the situation had worsened,” said an unidentified passenger.

    Captain Santibáñez was a 25-year veteran of the airline.

    In a statement, LATAM Airlines said:

    “We are deeply moved by what has happened, and we extend our sincere condolences to the family of our employee. We are deeply grateful for his 25-year career and his valuable contribution, which was always distinguished by his dedication, professionalism, and dedication. During the flight, all the necessary safety protocols were carried out to safeguard the life of the affected pilot.”

    The Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) demanded US government passenger compensation following the grounding of all U.S. flights for the first time since 9/11 for nearly three hours yesterday due to a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) outage traced to a database failure. The technical failure caused over 10,000 flight delays and over 1300 flight cancelations with millions of passengers around the country affected and over $200 million of economic damage estimated by APEX.

    APEX called upon U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Pete Buttigieg to hold the government to the same level of accountability that he had demanded from airlines the day prior to the FAA failure. On Tuesday, Secretary Buttigieg stated on Twitter, “We will enforce their responsibility to refund flight tickets and reimburse for alternate & ground transport, baggage costs, meals and hotels.”  With a program for similar government accountability for flight delays, funds could be reimbursed to customers from the billions of tax dollars charged to passengers.

    “The US government needs to rise to the same level of accountability to passengers as the airlines that have been paying hundreds of millions of dollars to protect customers for non-weather-related delays and cancellations,” APEX CEO Dr. Joe Leader stated. “Air traffic control failures happen too often. This national failure highlights a need for the US government to redirect airline taxes to practice what they preach: protect customers when it’s your fault within your control.”

    APEX pointed to the FAA system failure as further underlining the need for air traffic control modernization.  In addition to further protecting passengers from failures, U.S. government research has indicated that a Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) could reduce airline fuel utilization by up to 5% through more fuel-efficient traffic management.  The update could save billions of dollars annually paid by airlines and their passengers in more efficient travel.

    Las Vegas’ Harry Reid International Airport broke a new record last month. According to a Clark County Department of Aviation report on Wednesday, the airport had its highest number of June passengers in its history with 4.9 million people passing through it, surpassing the previous June 2022 record of 4.7 million in 2022.

    The combination of both domestic and international arrivals and departures led the passenger volume to increase by 4.1%, driven by market leader Southwest Airlines, which reported 1.8 million passengers for the month. The impressive figure marked a 10.5% increase from the same month a year ago.

    But the Harry Reid International Airport could soon break another record, as the 15.9% increase to 28.1 million passengers for the first half of the year puts it on track to deliver the highest number of annual passengers in its history. The airport reported a record 52.7 million passengers in 2022, notes Las Vegas Review-Journal.

    During the month of June, there were a total of 4.5 million passengers arriving from and departing to domestic destinations, up 3.8% from a year ago. Meanwhile, international arrivals and departures climbed 12.4% to 280,687.

    Deep discounter Spirit Airlines, the No. 2 commercial carrier, reported 692,507 passengers for the month, a figure that was up by 5.6%. For its part, legacy carrier Delta Air Lines, at No. 3, was up 4.4% to 427,555 passengers.

    Among international carriers, Canadian discounter Westjet carried the most passengers to and from Las Vegas, at 74,553, a 28.5% hike from June 2022. Air Canada was next with 43,884 (up 8.9%), followed by British Airways, with 28,562 (up a whopping 52.3% from June last year).
