  • Pinkvilla Recommendations: 5 must-watch Malayalam films penned by Sreenivasan on OTT proving he was a GOAT writer

    [ad_1]

Trigger warning: This article mentions the death of an individual.

Malayalam cinema’s veteran actor and celebrated writer Sreenivasan passed away on December 20, 2025. The 69-year-old filmmaker succumbed to his ill health after battling a prolonged illness for several years.

As we remember his countless contributions to Mollywood, here’s a list of Malayalam films that celebrate his legacy and prove why he was truly one of the greatest screenwriters in India.

5 Must-Watch Malayalam Films Written by Sreenivasan on OTT

    1. Nadodikkattu (1987)

    • Cast: Mohanlal, Sreenivasan, Shobana, Thilakan, Innocent, Janardhanan, Captain Raju, Mamukkoya
    • Director: Sathyan Anthikad
    • Genre: Satirical Comedy Drama
    • Runtime: 2 hours and 34 minutes
    • Where to watch: YouTube

One of the greatest and most memorable films in the history of Malayalam cinema is Nadodikkattu. The film, penned by Sreenivasan, is based on a story written by the filmmaker duo Siddique–Lal.

The story follows Dasan and Vijayan, two youngsters struggling to lead stable lives due to their inability to secure jobs. As they find it tough to make ends meet, the duo decides to seek employment in Dubai by ferry.

However, their lives take a wild turn when the ferryman dupes them and takes them only to Chennai, catapulting them into a poverty-stricken situation. What follows is how Dasan and Vijayan manage to overcome their hardships, inadvertently landing themselves in several humorous predicaments.

The social relevance and the effectiveness of the film’s dialogues remain fresh in the minds of anyone familiar with Malayalam cinema’s pop culture. The movie was later remade in multiple languages, including Tamil, Kannada, and Telugu.

    2. Vellanakalude Nadu (1988)

    • Cast: Mohanlal, Shobana, Thikkurissy Sukumaran Nair, M. G. Soman, Karamana Janardanan Nair, Sreenivasan, Maniyanpilla Raju, Jagadish
    • Director: Priyadarshan
    • Genre: Political Satire
    • Runtime: 2 hours and 16 minutes
    • Where to watch: YouTube

Vellanakalude Nadu is yet another gem in the long list of collaborations between Mohanlal and Sreenivasan. The film explores the story of Pavithran Nair, a small-time contractor.

The narrative focuses on his battles with the municipal corporation, petty politics, and the bureaucracy embedded within the system. As he navigates a new project while attempting to reconnect with his former lover, now an IAS officer, the story charts his transformation from a corrupt pawn of society into someone who exposes the system’s flaws.

In 2010, the film was remade in Hindi by Priyadarshan himself as Khatta Meetha, starring Akshay Kumar and Trisha Krishnan.

    3. Azhakiya Ravanan (1996)

    • Cast: Mammootty, Sreenivasan, Bhanupriya, Kavya Madhavan, Biju Menon, Cochin Haneefa, Innocent, Rajan P. Dev
    • Director: Kamal
    • Genre: Romantic Comedy Drama
    • Runtime: 2 hours and 30 minutes
    • Where to watch: ManoramaMAX

Azhakiya Ravanan, starring Mammootty in the lead role, may not align with the sharp satire that defined much of Sreenivasan’s work. However, its emotional depth, especially in the culmination of its long-standing romantic thread, speaks volumes.

The film follows Shankar Das, a wealthy and boastful businessman who returns to his native village without revealing his true identity, hoping to reunite with his former love, Anuradha.

Persuaded by his friend and writer Ambujakshan, Shankar Das decides to finance a film and appoint a young director, Sharath, to helm it. However, he soon discovers that Sharath is Anuradha’s current love interest. The rest of the film explores the consequences of this revelation and questions whether old love will rekindle or give way to new beginnings.

    4. Sandesam (1991)

    • Cast: Thilakan, Sreenivasan, Jayaram, Oduvil Unnikrishnan, Siddique, Kaviyoor Ponnamma
    • Director: Sathyan Anthikad
    • Genre: Political Satire Black Comedy
    • Runtime: 2 hours and 18 minutes
    • Where to watch: JioHotstar

Sandesam is a political satire infused with sharp black humor and remains one of the finest commentaries on Kerala’s socio-political landscape. The flick revolves around Raghavan, a retired railway employee who wishes to spend his remaining years in peace with his family.

However, his life is constantly disrupted as he is forced to mediate between his sons, who adhere to opposing political ideologies and frequently clash. The film effectively portrays family discord, financial struggles, and the absurdities arising from ideological extremism.

Over the years, Sandesam has come to be regarded as a cult classic and a benchmark for political satire in Indian cinema.

    5. Udayananu Tharam (2005)

    • Cast: Mohanlal, Sreenivasan, Meena, Mukesh, Jagathy Sreekumar, Salim Kumar, Bhavana
    • Director: Rosshan Andrrews
    • Genre: Comedy Drama
    • Runtime: 2 hours and 42 minutes
    • Where to watch: ManoramaMAX

Udayananu Tharam is a satirical comedy-drama that humorously critiques the film industry and the hypocrisy within it. The movie narrates the story of Udayabhanu, an ardent cinephile and assistant director living in Chennai, who dreams of becoming a successful writer-director.

His scheming friend and aspiring actor, Rajappan Thengummoodu, shares the same space and ambitions. When Udayabhanu pens a brilliant screenplay, Rajappan steals the script and turns it into a film starring himself, eventually becoming a superstar.

As Udayabhanu faces personal and professional setbacks, his life takes a turn when he finally gets the opportunity to direct a film and settle scores with Rajappan (now Saroj Kumar) once and for all.

The films mentioned above are just a few of the many masterpieces written by Sreenivasan during his illustrious career. As the saying goes, legends never truly die, and this iconic writer-actor of Malayalam cinema will forever be remembered through his words and stories.

  • OTT Anti-heroes we can’t get enough of

OTT Anti-heroes we can’t get enough of

    [ad_1]

While a protagonist is necessary for every film or television programme, it is the villain who gives any major character a sense of heroism and makes the narrative of that character worthwhile. Additionally, since these villains are on the exact opposite side from our “heroes,” we rarely have any sympathy for them. But other programmes have changed what it really means to be a “hero” or a “villain.”They light up the screens with their deeply entrenched personalities, from their heartbreaking back stories to their cunning master schemes. Look at a few examples:

    Raashii Khanna in Rudra

Anil Kapoor in the Night Manager

Aditya Roy Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, and Sobhita Dhulipala play the main characters in Sandeep Modi’s drama The Night Manager. The story of a former lieutenant named Shantanu Sengupta, who is hired by an intelligence officer to infiltrate the inner circle of an arms dealer named Shailendra Rungta, is the central theme of the plot. Anil Kapoor plays a villain throughout the entire series, but he also shows the character’s other side, where he is always willing to go above and beyond for his family and friends.

    Raashii Khanna in Rudra

    Sushmita Sen in Aarya

There’s no doubt that in both of Aarya’s seasons, she plays both the hero and the anti-hero with exquisite skill. She portrays a powerful mother who will go to any length to ensure the security of her children. She is forced to take matters into her own hands and battle the enemies; nonetheless, one cannot despise her for what she is doing because, after all, family is what she is defending. Aarya finds herself in a challenging situation where she must take whatever action is necessary to protect her children and get out of the web even as she is being compelled to return to India where she would have to face her family and adversaries.

    Raashii Khanna in Rudra

Raashii Khanna in Rudra: The Edge of Darkness

Brilliant supercop Rudraveer Singh travels through the labyrinth of psychopaths’ brains in the crime-ridden alleys of Bombay, protecting against their darkness. Aliyah, a sociopath who is mercurial and smiling, is portrayed by Raashi Khanna. After she falls in love with Rudra and becomes obsessed with him, the two unexpectedly become friends as she aids him in solving cases and reveals her other side. Raashi clearly pulls out the unexpected in the character, surprising the audience in the process.

    Raashii Khanna in Rudra

    Shefali Shah in Human

Saving lives of the patients is put on the back burner in the race to develop the next cash-generating medicine, and people lose their humanity. Shefali Shah portrays Dr. Gauri Nath in Human, who is driven to develop a vaccine for the benefit of humanity, even if it means doing so at the expense of human lives. The audience is left debating whether to root for her in her attempt to develop drugs that can save the human race or against her for the method she uses to get there.

  • Dahaad star Gulshan Devaiah says Rajkummar Rao is the most ‘boring’ person to work with; here’s why [EXCLUSIVE]

Dahaad star Gulshan Devaiah says Rajkummar Rao is the most ‘boring’ person to work with; here’s why [EXCLUSIVE]

    [ad_1]

Dahaad has roared and how! The web series has managed to get everyone’s attention with its spine-chilling storyline revolving around a series of murders. The show has a stellar star cast of Sonakshi Sinha, Vijay Varma and Gulshan Devaiah. With its success, stars definitely have much to celebrate. Gulshan Devaiah especially has more than one reason to celebrate as his birthday is around the corner. We got into a candid conversation with the star to talk about his birthday plans, the success of Dahaad, upcoming projects and much more. Also Read – When Himesh Reshammiya’s Jhalak Dikhla Ja song from Emraan Hashmi starrer Aksar started inviting ghosts

Gulshan Devaiah was his candid best and shared some fun bits too. Laughingly, he also said that Rajkummar Rao is a boring person to work with and he has a reason for it. Excerpts from the interview below: Also Read – Gulshan Devaiah slams Nawazuddin Siddiqui for calling depression an urban concept

Please tell us something about your birthday plans…

Um, I’m not planning anything but my ex-wife who is my best friend now, she’s probably going to take me out for a really expensive meal. I’m looking forward to that. We both like nice food. I don’t know if there will be some nice fancy restaurant where it’s very difficult to get a reservation. Some place like that she would have known. I’m looking forward to that wonderful meal and a lovely conversation with my best friend. Also Read – Are Vijay Varma and Tamannaah Bhatia dating? Dahaad co-star Gulshan Devaiah says, ‘Kuch to hai…’

Did you expect such a reaction for Dahaad?

I don’t think of such things. I’d like to not think too much about the consequences or the result. Although results are important, when I’m doing it, I don’t think about the results. So I try to keep my focus on what I’m doing in the process and try and concentrate and enjoy the process and try to do as well as possible on a day-to-day basis.
Because I feel that I have no control over the results. I cannot manipulate people to like me more or less or anything like that. So it’s for them to freely decide what they think of your work and the story that you’re a part of. And it doesn’t exist for me to make that story to people. It takes hundreds and thousands of other people as well. So I have very little control. So I’m like, why worry about things that I cannot control? I can worry about and I can put effort into my work. And that’s what I do. And it usually works best for me because sometimes expectations are met with disappointment also. So I kind of suffer a little less from that. So I wasn’t thinking about expectations. I was just thinking about this is my job. Let me try and do it as best as possible.

What’s your strategy to pick out-of-the-box roles?

I just like doing things that I’m genuinely interested in. If you ask me what do you want to do next, I don’t know what I want to do next. But when something presents itself, I assess it. And I’m like, oh, this is interesting. Maybe I should do this. Or I don’t know if I’m genuinely interested. Maybe this is a path. So this is my process. And I’m also trying to constantly surprise myself and also be surprised with the kind of projects that come to me. I don’t have any set pattern or something. I’m conscious that the only thing that I’m conscious of is that I’d like it to be diverse. I’d like to have my career be quite diverse and versatile as possible. As much as I can handle.

Tell us something about Guns and Gulaabs with Raj & DK…

It’s a crazy series. Those two guys are also nuts. So, they allowed, they gave me full freedom to do whatever I wanted to do. I know that they have released some pictures. I was like, please don’t show anything. Let the audiences experience it and all that. But there’s a lot more to it than what meets the eye. And it’s just, it was a fun, I got COVID while shooting it, so that wasn’t fun. But everything else was just crazy. I hope it gets a season 2. It’s one of the craziest parts I’ve ever done. They gave me full freedom to interpret the part in terms of how to play the scene or the character. But also, like, you know, what kind of costume, hair and many other things. There are some appliances that I use, which I won’t tell you about. But they gave me like, yeah, you pretty much do whatever you wanted.

The series has a very fun and quirky starcast. Any fun anecdote to share from the sets?

Rajkummar Rao is one of the most boring people to work with. He comes, he does his job and then he leaves. There’s no chit chat, there’s nothing. Like, one would imagine me and Raj would be sitting and talking about the craft and this and that. Nothing (laughs)! He just comes, he does his job and he’s gone. I’m like, I don’t know, like, you know, many times I try and initiate a conversation with him. Like, I feel like he just wants to be left alone. Most of the time I’m sitting and chatting with Raj or DK. I’m chatting with them or like with some other actors who are there. Some people are curious, they come and ask me questions. Like, they want to know me better. I’m happy to do that. But I thought that, me and Raj would be like, you know, best friends. One would imagine, right, that two actors who are appreciated for their work, one would imagine that the two people would sit and talk about the craft or, you know, something like that. Nothing! ‘Kaisa hai tu, haan theek hai’, this is our random conversation.

Duranga season 2 is coming up, any message for fans…

Yes, yes, yes. Because it’s going to pick up from where it left off and Amit Sadh is also now part of the show.
And he’s nuts. He’s a total nutcase. And he’s interpreted this part in a very crazy manner. And it’s going to be really entertaining. And it’s an emotional journey also for me and Drashti. So, I think there’s a lot of things that the audience can expect. I mean, I get messages on a daily basis. But sooner than, very soon, within the next couple of months, I think it should be out.

Does OTT interest you more than films?

See, I don’t mind doing both. Because they’re both long format. And I like working in long format. So, I don’t mind doing both. If I’m interested in that, if I feel that the story is interesting to me, the characters are interesting, I’ll do. But right now, see, I’m doing both. Like, 8 A.M is a theatrical release. My next project, which I’m going to start shooting, Ulajh, is a theatrical release. It’s a feature film. I’d like to sort of do both. And, you know, to be perfectly honest, the theatricals are difficult to succeed because the business model is that much more difficult to succeed. So, if you do succeed, and because it’s difficult, so it’s that much more satisfying also. That you’ve got audiences into the theatres, you’ve compelled them to watch a movie. And which is why I feel that the film stars are like Paramount. Because it’s that much more exponentially difficult for you to succeed with a theatrical release. So I would like to keep chancing my arm there.

Impact Professionals Finds Success With Its Advertising-Based Video On-Demand Model

Impact Professionals, an over-the-top (OTT) streaming service featuring positive and inspiring media for entrepreneurs and self-motivated individuals, is proud to announce the successful launch of its advertising-based video-on-demand (AVOD) model. The company launched just months ago and has seen a significant increase in user engagement and revenue due to its unique approach to streaming content.

“We’re thrilled to see how well our customers have received our AVOD model,” said Kyler Pentecost, CEO of Impact Professionals. “Our focus on providing positive and inspiring media for entrepreneurs and self-motivated individuals has resonated with users, and our AVOD model allows us to offer our content to a wider audience without the need for a subscription.”

The company’s focus on its AVOD model also highlights a growing trend in the streaming industry towards ad-supported models, as subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) models become less popular with consumers feeling the impact of challenging inflationary times. Impact Professionals’ approach is a perfect fit for the current streaming market, providing users with a more affordable and flexible streaming experience.

According to Variety, net subscriber gains are at their lowest point since 2018. In Q2 of 2022, Netflix lost 1.3 million subscribers. Disney+ added 100,000 new subscribers, marking its worst quarter since launching in 2019. HBO, HBO Max and Discovery+ lost 300,000 subscribers.

Impact Professionals’ AVOD model allows users to access its curated collection of positive and inspiring media at no cost, with revenue generated through advertising. This approach has proven to be a hit with users, who appreciate the ability to access high-quality content without the commitment of a subscription.

“We’re thrilled to be at the forefront of this trend and look forward to continuing to offer our users a unique and positive streaming experience,” said Pentecost.

Impact Professionals’ FAST Channel provides a free, ad-supported 24-hour viewing experience that continuously airs many of its most popular shows on preset schedules. • Virat Kohli hits a six for Hotstar, multiplexes as T20 World Cup viewership soars

Virat Kohli hits a six for Hotstar, multiplexes as T20 World Cup viewership soars

    [ad_1]

It will go down as a ‘historic match’, not just in T20s or World Cups, but India-Pakistan cricket folklore spanning across decades. As Virat Kohli knocked Haris Rauf for two sublime sixes in the 19th over, taking India closer to a thrilling win, Disney+ Hotstar’s live viewership soared to 1.8 crore — a jump from the 1.4 crore the OTT platform had recorded in the India-Pakistan game in Asia Cup earlier this year. By the time Ashwin hit the winning runs off Nawaz, Hotstar concurrents may have dipped slightly to 1.6 crore. (These are analyst estimates, Hotstar is yet to disclose official numbers)

Hotstar is no stranger to cricketing highs, especially during marquee matches such as this in the ongoing T20 World Cup. Given the complete absence of India-Pakistan bilateral cricket over the last few years, ICC tournaments almost always add a fixture between the arch rivals that becomes a high-viewership vehicle. “Tournaments of national interest [like a World Cup], an India-Pakistan game is viewed with a lot of passion. Growth in terms of viewership on digital has been phenomenally high at 15-20 per cent YoY. There is a big opportunity for penetration and driving large eyeballs,” Karan Taurani, SVP, Elara Capital, tells Business Today

However, this may not be repetitive, he says, given not all games will go down to the last ball and/or feature a Virat Kohli masterclass. However, “the concurrent views might be higher in the final match of the World Cup depending on which team qualifies and at what scale it is,” he says. “India has to obviously qualify for that along with a very competitive team – Pakistan, Australia, England, or New Zealand, which will develop the viewership.”

Advertising money, however, is not just made on concurrent viewership since most brands pre-sign contracts with the OTT platform. Given the influx of T20 matches this year, Hotstar is estimated to have seen a “steady viewership growth”  of 15-20 per cent YoY, according to Elara Capital. “This is good news for OTT and digital advertising. And If you look at cricket advertising on digital, there is a potential for 30-40 per cent YoY growth given the sharp eyeballs we are seeing,” Taurani explains.

    Cricket in Multiplexes

While Hotstar is making merry in streaming, India’s top multiplex operators PVR and INOX are also experimenting with match screenings. PVR, for instance, showed the India-Pakistan game across 125 screens, while INOX played it in 90+ cinemas, generating ~70 per cent hall occupancy.

While this may not be a sustainable business model for footfall recovery, the short-term benefits cannot be denied. “This is very much in line with what a hit film would do, but this is a one-day wonder, not a one-week wonder. Multiplexes will get minor gains here and there, but it is not a sustainable business model,” Taurani explains.

Short-term gains also factor in “slightly higher ticket prices” for cricket matches compared to that of movies, as well as higher F&B spends. The revenue-sharing model is also similar. “Multiplexes share 50 per cent with the BCCI compared to 50 per cent they would share with distributors for films. But the overall share of properties where cricket matches are shown is just about 20 per cent,” Taurani says, adding, “Multiplexes are doing this as test runs because they know very few matches will attract big audiences [like the India-Pak game did].”

Both PVR and INOX attested to the high turnout for the Sunday game. INOX Leisure CEO Alok Tandon told PTI, “The response that we got for this match across all the 90-plus cinemas has been phenomenal, identical to a blockbuster movie. The electric environment in the auditoriums was much like what someone witnessed in the stadiums.”

PVR shares were up 1.23 per cent up to Rs 1,736.90, while INOX was trading 0.15 per cent higher at Rs 508.40 on the BSE on Tuesday.
