Aida Osman Worked Her Way From the “Rap Sh!t” Writers’ Room to Her TV Role

    [ad_1]

Aida Osman may be just beginning her acting career, but she’s no stranger to the entertainment world. The Nebraska native stars in Issa Rae’s “Rap Sh!t” as Shawna β€” one half of the show’s central rap duo and a character she helped create specifically for herself. Before her TV debut, Osman started out as a writer on Netflix’s “Big Mouth” and HBO’s “Betty,” also serving as a cohost on the “Keep It!” podcast. However, Osman’s gig on her HBO Max show isn’t her first time flexing her creativity.

After graduating from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2018, Osman built a following on Twitter a year later from a funny viral video of her rapping about . . . err, pegging. From there, her career took off as she booked her “Big Mouth” job almost immediately after, per Vanity Fair.

Fast forward a few years, and Osman has made a huge splash in the hip-hop-inspired “Rap Sh!t,” which returns on Nov. 9 for its second season. Keep reading to learn more about the comedy writer turned actor.

  • Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker Welcome Baby Boy

Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker Welcome Baby Boy

    [ad_1]

Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker’s baby boy is here! As People confirmed on Nov. 4, the couple welcomed their first child together more than four months after Kardashian Barker announced her pregnancy at Barker’s Blink-182 concert in Los Angeles on June 16. The Poosh founder revealed the news by holding up a handwritten sign that read “Travis I’m Pregnant.” (POPSUGAR was there to witness the exciting moment.) A few days later, the couple shared that they were expecting a son.

Ahead of their child’s birth, Barker rushed home to California due to an “urgent family matter,” Blink-182 announced on their Instagram Story as they postponed their European tour dates on Sept. 1. Hours before the news broke, Barker posted a series of photos on his Instagram Stories of him visiting a prayer room. On Sept. 6, Kardashian and Barker revealed the former had to undergo “urgent fetal surgery” due to pregnancy complications.

The pair, who wed three times in 2022, have been transparent about parenthood as they’ve raised their blended family together. Kardashian shares three children β€” daughter Penelope and sons Mason and Reign β€” with ex Scott Disick. Barker also has three kids: daughter Alabama and son Landon, both of whom he shares with ex-wife Shanna Moakler, and stepdaughter Atiana, daughter of Moakler and boxing champ Oscar De La Hoya.

Kardashian and her husband have also been open about their IVF journey, part of which has been documented in episodes of “The Kardashians.” However, last fall, Kardashian announced that she was “for now done with IVF” due to the “toll on my health and my β€” just even mentally β€” the hormones, the medication.” She added, “I feel truly, like if it’s meant to be, it’ll happen.”

  • All the Women Chris Rock Has Dated Over the Years

All the Women Chris Rock Has Dated Over the Years

    [ad_1]

Rock and Compton-Rock were married for nearly 19 years before they split. According to People, the comedian and former publicist dated for two years before tying the knot on Nov. 23, 1996. Back in 1997, Rock told Ebony Magazine (via People) of his then-wife, “She’s changed me. She’s really calmed me down and centered my life.”

After a few years of marriage, the former couple welcomed their first child, daughter Lola, on June 28, 2002. Their second daughter, Zahra, was born almost two years later on May 22, 2004. In the past, Rock has poked fun at his and Compton-Rock’s girls in his stand-up specials and has even said that he believes they made him a better comedian. “I think I’m a better artist. Everything I’ve done since I’ve had kids is better than the stuff I did before I had kids,” he said back in 2007, per People.

Rock and his ex-wife’s marriage wasn’t without its challenges. According to People, in 2004, the comedian discussed with Howard Stern a sexual encounter that occurred outside of his relationship in 1998. He said he and Compton-Rock were separated at the time. But then came a paternity suit, DNA tests, and a sexual assault allegation, the Los Angeles Times reported in 2009.

Before that, divorce speculation surrounding Rock and his ex-wife surfaced in 2006, with TMZ reporting that the former started formal proceedings. However, the pair then shared a statement with People that said, “We remain, as always, very happy and committed to our marriage and the beautiful family that we have built.”

The following year, Rock fought paternity claims again when a Georgia woman accused the comedian of fathering her teenage son, though Today reported that a DNA test proved the claim to be false. “Though we prefer to keep our private life out of the media, we feel that it is necessary to respond to the many grossly inaccurate media reports that were sold to the tabloids by Kali Bowyer who falsely claimed that Chris Rock fathered her 13-year-old son,” Rock and Compton-Rock said in a joint statement.

The pair called it quits in December 2014, with Compton-Rock sharing a statement, per People, that read: “After much contemplation and 19 years of marriage, Chris and I have decided to go our separate ways.”

Rock issued his own statement via his attorney, saying, “Chris Rock has filed for divorce from his wife, Malaak. This is a personal matter and Chris requests privacy as he and Malaak work through this process and focus on their family.” At the time, a source told People, “This was a long time coming. Chris has known it wasn’t salvageable for a while. He was the one to file because he knew it was time to just move forward already.”

Following their divorce, which was finalized in 2016, Rock was quite candid about his faults in his marriage. A 2017 Rolling Stone profile revealed that Rock said to a comedy-show crowd frankly, “I was a piece of sh*t,” while reflecting on the relationship.

Then in his 2018 Netflix “Tambourine” special, he admitted that he cheated on his wife with three women on tour. “It’s my fault because I’m a f*cking assh*le,” he said, per Us Weekly. “I didn’t listen. I wasn’t kind. I had an attitude. I thought, ‘I pay for everything, I can do what I want.’ That sh*t don’t f*cking work. I just thought I was the sh*t.”

Jurnee Smollett Makes a Boss Entrance as “The Python” in Exclusive “The Burial” Clip

    [ad_1]

Jurnee Smollett lets her rΓ©sumΓ© speak for itself in “The Burial.” In this exclusive look at the new movie, which hit theaters on Oct. 6, the “Lovecraft Country” actor stars as Mame Downes, a new power defense attorney who comes to town to go up against smooth-talking lawyer Willie E. Gary (played by Jamie Foxx). And by the sound of her track record, she’s nothing to play with.

Hearing of her college degree from Howard University, Foxx’s Willie, impressed, quips, “Oh, that mean she just ain’t a woman, she a Black woman.”

The clip then cuts to Smollett’s Mame as she struts through an airport with luggage in hand and a pair of black shades covering her stone-cold look. She means business. Meanwhile, junior counselor Hal (Mamoudou Athie) continues to run off her accomplishments: “Graduated top of her class from Harvard Law School, Jesus Christ.” Now, currently the youngest partner ever at her law firm, it’s clear Mame has her eyes set on victory by any means necessary β€” her nickname says so.

“Friend of mine used to work with her over at CBNA,” one lawyer shares, “and um, well, he told me they had a nickname for her around the office: The Python.”

“The Burial” is a true-life-inspired courtroom drama, in which funeral homeowner Jeremiah O’Keefe (Tommy Lee Jones) enlists charismatic attorney Willie to save his family business after a handshake deal gone bad. While going up against the powers that be, the pair bond as they expose corporate corruption and racial injustice in this triumphant tale. The film also stars Pamela Reed, Bill Camp, and Alan Ruck.

Which “Love Is Blind” Season 5 Couples Are Still Together? What We Know So Far

    [ad_1]

    Relationship status: Maybe still together

Izzy and Stacy are another couple who get off to a rocky start since they, too, find themselves in a weird love triangle. Initially, Izzy and Johnie hit it off in the pods, though the former also strikes up a connection with Stacy (and Lydia, briefly). Both romances continue until Izzy breaks things off with Johnie β€” who also connected with Chris β€” in episode three to pursue Stacy, whom he pops the question to in the following episode. Things go smoothly on Izzy and Stacy’s romantic couples trip and back home in Houston, though they have a spat in episode seven. Then comes more drama.

When the pod squad reunites later in the episode, Johnie and Izzy sit down to clear the air, during which the latter says he heard a lot of “sketchy sh*t” about her. He accuses her of, basically, running game on him and other guys in the pods, specifically Chris, saying, “The things that you were telling me, I wasn’t the only guy you were telling.”

Prior to their argument, Stacy also states that she has an issue with Johnie, and as we see in next week’s preview, the two get into it. What this means for Izzy and Stacy’s relationship is unclear for now, but these obstacles make it hard to say they last until their wedding day.

  • Everything Zendaya Has Said About Those Tom Holland Engagement Rumors

Everything Zendaya Has Said About Those Tom Holland Engagement Rumors

    [ad_1]

Wedding bells are still not ringing for Zendaya and Tom Holland β€” at least not yet. On Sept. 21, Zendaya shared a selfie showing off her hat in a car window, but what fans took most notice of was the massive pearl ring on her hand, sparking another round of speculation that she and Holland are engaged.

Zendaya got wind of the speculation immediately and followed up her post with a now-deleted Instagram Story video to shut the latest rumors down. “I can’t post anything you guys! I posted it for my hat!” she said, before pointing out that the ring wasn’t even on the engagement finger (the fourth finger on the left hand). “Not for the ring on my right finger, you guys. Seriously, you think that’s how I would drop the news?”

This isn’t the first time Zendaya β€” or her mom, Claire Stoermer β€” have shut down Tomdaya engagement rumors. On Nov. 29, 2022, a Twitter account called Pop Tingz tweeted that the “Spider-Man” co-stars-turned-lovers were engaged. Although the tweet didn’t provide a reputable source, the claim took off, racking up nearly 7,000 retweets and quote tweets in total in a matter of days. Another unverified account called Pop Hive picked up the “news” and received even more engagement from thrilled Tomdaya fans, garnering 75,000 retweets and quote tweets altogether.

The rumors were just “clickbait,” however. On Nov. 30, 2022, Stoermer posted text on her Instagram Story that read, “Clickbait typically refers to the practice of writing sensationalized or misleading headlines in order to attract clicks on a piece of content. It often relies on exaggerating claims or leaving out key information in order to encourage traffic. The term is generally used in a dismissive sense.” Based on the timing of her post, Stoermer was seemingly suggesting that those initial Tomdaya engagement rumors were just that, clickbait.

Zendaya and Holland have long kept their relationship under wraps in the public eye. The actors first met after being cast in 2017’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” and the romance rumors started shortly after they began filming for the movie.

Over the next four years, Holland and Zendaya appeared to only be friends as they pursued romantic relationships: the former romanced Nadia Parkes, and the latter started dating her “Euphoria” costar, Jacob Elordi. It wasn’t until July 2021 that things got serious between the two “Spider-Man” stars after they were spotted making out at a red light in Los Angeles. The photos reignited dating rumors, but the couple didn’t address the speculation until Holland’s November 2021 GQ cover story, telling the outlet they’d publicly confirm their relationship “when we’re ready to talk about it together.”

Fans have always admired Zendaya and Holland’s sweet bond as they’ve supported each other in their professional and personal lives. In the past, each of them has shared cute birthday messages on social media. They’ve even supported one another on set and at red carpet premieres (in matching outfits, might we add) for any projects they weren’t starring in together.

While this pair may not be engaged, Zendaya and Holland’s relationship is still the stuff of storybooks. So, considering Zendaya asked fans, “You think that’s how I would drop the news?” we can probably expect the pair to tell us directly when if they get engaged.

  • Chris Evans and Alba Baptista Reportedly Wed in a Ceremony in Cape Cod

Chris Evans and Alba Baptista Reportedly Wed in a Ceremony in Cape Cod

    [ad_1]

Chris Evans and Alba Baptista are reportedly married! On Sept. 10, People confirmed via a source that the couple wed during a ceremony at a private estate in Cape Cod, MA, on Sept. 9. Representatives for Evans and Baptista did not immediately respond to POPSUGAR’s requests for comment.

According to People, many of the couple’s famous friends were spotted in Boston for the wedding, including Evans’s Marvel costars: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, and John Krasinski.

In November 2022, a source confirmed to People that Evans, 42, and Baptista, 26, had been dating for “for over a year” at that point, but speculation about their romance began months before as fans noticed subtle cues that the two were romantically involved.

For instance: some hawk-eyed Instagram users noticed that Baptista followed Evans and several members of his family back in 2021, per Cosmopolitan. However, an innocent Halloween Instagram post from Evans on Oct. 31, 2022, which pictured a pair of carved pumpkins, sent rumors into overdrive when fans realized the set was identical to a photo Baptista used for her Instagram profile picture.

It wasn’t long before the two openly embraced their romance, which Evans seemingly confirmed himself a few months later by sharing a playful video of him and his girlfriend jokingly scaring each other on his Instagram Stories at the top of the new year. “A look back at 2022,” he captioned it. He doubled down on the social media PDA on Feb. 14 when he posted a sweet photo montage of him and Baptista on Instagram in honor of Valentine’s Day.

Previously, Evans has dated a number of famous stars, including Minka Kelly, whom he had a years-long on-and-off relationship with, Jessica Biel, and Jenny Slate. Baptista’s dating history is unknown, but she has starred in a handful of Portuguese films as well as Netflix’s “Warrior Nun,” which marked her English-language debut in 2020.

  • Disney+’s Agatha Harkness “WandaVision” Spinoff Is Delayed Until Fall 2024

Disney+’s Agatha Harkness “WandaVision” Spinoff Is Delayed Until Fall 2024

    [ad_1]

Looks like we haven’t seen the last of Agatha Harkness after all. The finale of “WandaVision” left the door open for the evil witch to return, and Disney+ is making it happen next year. So get ready for another new MCU series, “Agatha: Darkhold Diaries” (previously known as “Agatha: Coven of Chaos”).

We’re not quite sure yet what the series will be about, but we do have two major pieces of casting news. Aubrey Plaza joined the series in an undisclosed role, Variety reported on Nov. 2, 2022. POPSUGAR reached out to Disney and Plaza’s reps for comment but did not receive a response. The news came a day after the outlet broke the news that “Heartstopper” actor Joe Locke also joined the cast. His role is currently unknown, though fans have speculated that he’ll play some version of the hero Wiccan, aka Billy Maximoff β€” one of Wanda’s sons.

Most of the final episode of “WandaVision” is dedicated to a showdown between Wanda and Agatha (Kathryn Hahn), her nemesis. Though Agatha is defeated in the end, she’s still alive and lurking about as a potential mentor for Wanda to lean on since she understands Wanda’s magic. But since Wanda technically died at the end of May’s “Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness” movie, it’s not clear what exactly the plot of “Darkhold Diaries” will be.

Here’s what we know about the show so far.

    “Agatha: Darkhold Diaries” Plot

Aside from the fact that the show will focus on Agatha, plot details are being kept under wraps for now, but we do know “WandaVision” head writer Jac Schaeffer will once again tackle this new project in her respective role. It seems likely that the witch will be building her own coven of magical beings to wreak havoc in the MCU.

    “Agatha: Darkhold Diaries” Cast

Hahn will return as Agatha, with Locke and Plaza joining the cast. Emma Caulfield Ford will also reprise the role of Dottie from “WandaVision.”

    “Agatha: Darkhold Diaries” Release Date

“Agatha: Coven of Chaos” was originally set for a winter 2023 release, Marvel President Kevin Feige revealed at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2022. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s now been delayed until early fall 2024.

Joe Jonas Reportedly Retains Divorce Lawyer After 4 Years of Marriage With Sophie Turner

    [ad_1]

It looks like Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner may be parting ways after four years of marriage. On Sept. 3, People reported, per a source, that Jonas has retained a divorce lawyer. TMZ was the first to break the news. Reps for Jonas did not immediately respond to POPSUGAR’s request for comment. Meanwhile, Turner’s rep declined to comment.

Jonas, 34, and Turner, 27, started dating in late 2016 and announced their engagement in October 2017. They tied the knot Las Vegas-style with a star-studded wedding β€” which Diplo famously live-streamed on his Instagram β€” on May 1, 2019, just hours after they attended the Billboard Music Awards. A month later, the pair got married again in France with their closest family and friends in attendance. Jonas and Turner share two children: daughter Willa, 3, and another baby girl, 1, whose name has not been shared yet.

This year, Turner supported Jonas at his Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony, where he received a star with his brothers, Nick and Kevin. The couple also attended Vanity Fair’s 2023 Oscars afterparty in March. Most recently, Turner celebrated Jonas’s 34th birthday by posting a selfie of them wearing matching pajamas on Instagram. • Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell Are Up to Their Old Antics in the “Good Burger 2” Teaser

Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell Are Up to Their Old Antics in the “Good Burger 2” Teaser

    [ad_1]

Welcome back to Good Burger! After years of teasing a sequel, Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell are back for “Good Burger 2.” On Aug. 21, Paramount+ dropped the first teaser, and it seems like no time has passed, because Ed and Dex are up to their old antics.

Joining Thompson and Mitchell for the sequel are “Good Burger” regulars Josh Server and Lori Beth Denberg, Paramount+ announced on June 29. Back in March, Jimmy Fallon and the crowd instantly went wild when Thompson and Mitchell revealed the “Goodburger 2” news on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” “Ladies and gentlemen, Kel has something he would like to tell you,” Thompson teased before handing the announcement over to his costar. Mitchell continued, “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Good Burger, home of the Good Burger . . . part two!”

Fallon’s reaction was fitting, given that the former “SNL” star has long been a supporter of the film. As he noted at the top of the interview, he reunited the “All That” stars for a “Good Burger” sketch back in 2015. “We’re going to shoot it this summer, and it will be out soon,” Thompson continued.

When asked what will happen in “Good Burger 2,” the “SNL” actor teased that there will be “hijinks” and shared that they “want as many cameos as we can possibly get.”

Thompson and Mitchell starred in their 1997 kids’ comedy as two goofy friends, Dexter and Ed, who spend their summer working at a local fast-food joint. In a statement, Thompson expressed his excitement over starring in the movie’s sequel 25 years later. “I can’t believe it’s been a little over 25 years since great customer service was born at Good Burger!” he said. “Being a part of something so many generations of people have come to love has made me so proud and now to be back where it all began working on the sequel is surreal! Love performing with my brother Kel and can’t wait to show the fans what these characters have been up to since we last saw them.”

Mitchell added, “Ed is one of those timeless characters that has brought so much joy and laughter to fans, and it’s such a beautiful blessing to still be doing it after all these years. It’s super awesome to come back and continue the stories of Dex, Ed and Good Burger for both the people who grew up watching and their kids.”

“Good Burger” started as a hilarious “All That” sketch, led by Mitchell, but quickly turned into a nostalgic hit that fans still clamor over to this day. “Welcome to Good Burger, home of the Good Burger, can I take your order?” is just one of many memorable quotes from the movie, so hearing it once more in the sequel will be a real treat for ’90s kids.

Read on for everything we know about “Good Burger 2” so far.

    “Good Burger 2” Official Announcement

Who Is in the “Good Burger 2” cast?

  • Pink Swaps Concert Song Lyrics to Support Britney Spears Amid Her Divorce From Sam Asghari

Pink Swaps Concert Song Lyrics to Support Britney Spears Amid Her Divorce From Sam Asghari

    [ad_1]

Fellow stars are supporting Britney Spears amid the singer’s divorce from husband Sam Asghari. On Wednesday, during her Detroit, MI, Summer Carnival tour stop, singer Pink changed the lyrics to her hit song “Don’t Let Me Get Me” to show Spears some love. Per a fan video, instead of singing the original line, “Tired of being compared to damn Britney Spears,” Pink swapped the last three words for “sweet Britney Spears.” She continued, “She’s so pretty. That just ain’t me.”

Back in February, Pink reflected on the song and her early friendship with Spears, telling People, “People think I was picking on Britney on ‘Don’t Let Me Get Me,’ but I’ve always felt like a big sister to her.” She added, “I’m very protective of her, and she’s the sweetest person in the world.” The outlet noted that the two were not in contact at that time, but Pink said, “I wish her well. I cover her in light all day long.”

“I wish her well. I cover her in light all day long.”

Pink isn’t the only celebrity who’s voiced support for Spears following news of her split from Asghari. On Aug. 16, comedian Loni Love posted a screenshot of a Page Six article on Instagram that alleged Asghari is threatening to release “extraordinarily embarrassing” information about Spears if their prenup isn’t negotiated. Love captioned it, “And it begins… #freebritney.” Octavia Spencer came to Spears’s defense in the comments too, writing, “Extortion is illegal.”

News of Spears and Asghari’s breakup arrived that same day, in which reports initially stated that the two were separating after 14 months of marriage. Just a few hours later, Asghari filed for divorce. Per court documents obtained by POPSUGAR, he listed the pair’s date of separation as July 28, 2023, and noted “irreconcilable differences” as the cause of the split. He’s also seeking spousal support.

Though Spears, 41, has yet to publicly address their divorce news, Asghari, 29, issued a statement on his Instagram Story on Aug. 17, writing, “After 6 years of love and commitment to each other my wife and I have decided to end our journey together.” He continued, “We will hold onto the love and respect we have for each other and I wish her the best always. Sh*t happens. Asking for privacy seems rediculous [sic] so I will just ask for everyone including media to be kind and thoughtful.”

According to People, a source said that things between Spears and Asghari, who met back in 2016 and tied the knot in June 2022, had reportedly been “very toxic” for some time. “Their marriage has been on the rocks for months,” the insider said. “There has been constant drama. It’s sad. A divorce would be devastating for Britney.”

Sam Asghari Reportedly Files For Divorce From Britney Spears

    [ad_1]

Just hours after news broke on Aug. 16 that Britney Spears and Sam Asghari are separating after 14 months of marriage, People reported that 29-year-old Asghari filed for divorce on Wednesday. TMZ was first to report on their split.

A source told People that things have reportedly been “very toxic” between Spears, 41, and Asghari for a long time. “Their marriage has been on the rocks for months,” the insider said. “There has been constant drama. It’s sad. A divorce would be devastating for Britney.” Reps for Spears and Asghari did not immediately respond to POPSUGAR’s requests for comments.

Spears and Asghari first met on the set of the singer’s “Slumber Party” music video in 2016. The pair, who still follow each other on Instagram, announced their engagement on Sept. 12, 2021, exactly two months after the singer’s 13-year conservatorship ended. They tied the knot on June 9, 2022, in an intimate Los Angeles ceremony with 60 guests.

Shortly after their wedding, Asghari opened up about married life in a “Good Morning America” interview, saying, “It’s just surreal. It was way overdue for us, and we imagined this thing being a fairy tale, and it was. We wanted to just celebrate, and that’s what we did.”

Two months after exchanging vows, Spears wrote in a since-deleted Instagram post, “Guys just two months ago I got married πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰ !!! Can you believe it πŸ™ˆπŸ™ˆπŸ™ˆ ???” alongside photos from her “fairytale wedding.”

While Spears has yet to publicly address the split, the singer is slated to drop her tell-all memoir, “The Woman in Me,” this fall. According to publisher Simon & Schuster, the book “is a brave and astonishingly moving story about freedom, fame, motherhood, survival, faith, and hope.”

Once upon a time, Lil’ Kim gathered Missy Elliott, Da Brat, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, and Angie Martinez to record a sequel to her “Hardcore” offering “Not Tonight.” Together, at the height of their careers, the seasoned rap stars and a “rookie on this all-star team” (Martinez) released their 1997 hit “Ladies Night Remix,” one of the greatest female collaborations in hip-hop history. Not only did the iconic, femme-forward track dominate on radio, sweep up a 1998 Grammy nomination, and become an official girls-night-out staple, but its massive success set the tone for what future female rap collaborations would aspire to be, even to this day.

Kim’s original “Not Tonight” is raunchier than its remixed anthem, as it sounds more like a sultry after-hours track where the rap star doesn’t mince words about her demands for lip service β€” “I don’t want d*ck tonight / Eat my p*ssy right.” But the “Ladies Night Remix,” which contains a sample of Kool & the Gang’s “Ladies Night,” made room for a new subject: the sisterhood of hip-hop.

“We loved the whole idea of lady empowerment. I just wanted all my favorite artists on it.”

According to a 2016 XXL interview, Kim said that the idea for the song spawned from the former CEO and president of Undeas Recordings, Lance “Un” Rivera. “He always loved the ‘Ladies’ Night’ thing,” she said. “. . . We loved the whole idea of lady empowerment. I just wanted all my favorite artists on it. TLC, Missy, Da Brat. That song landed us MTV nominations and Grammy nominations. So we did something right.” Per Clover Hope’s “The Motherlode: 100+ Women Who Made Hip-Hop,” Rivera once recalled, “[Lil’ Kim’s idea] ‘Ladies Night,’ was to unite women. Missy came in and took charge of the formatting of the record, and it became history.”

Back in the ’90s, the golden age of hip-hop birthed women empowerment records like Elliott’s “She’s a B*tch,” Queen Latifah’s “U.N.I.T.Y.,” Yo-Yo’s “You Can’t Play With My Yo-Yo,” and many more. All of these tracks boasted a fearless attitude for the women ushering in a wave of hip-hop feminism, a phrase coined by “When Chickenheads Come Home to Roost” author and pioneering hip-hop journalist Joan Morgan. However, “Not Tonight (Ladies Night Remix)” had something many of those tracks didn’t: unity. Pairing verses from multiple mainstream female MCs was unheard of at the time. Not to mention, the song’s star-studded music video β€” which famously featured cameos from Mary J. Blige, Queen Latifah, SWV, Xscape, and more β€” proved that women across the industry could show each other genuine love.

So in a world that sought to pit women rappers against each other, “Ladies Night Remix” demonstrated that they could unselfishly give each other a chance to shine together on a single track.

As Martinez recalled in her 2016 memoir “My Voice,” “all the women on the song were like a team,” and each one brought their own standout lyrics to the table. From Martinez’s memorable opener β€” “It’s ladies’ night, what? / It must be Angie on the mic / The Butter P honey got the sugar, got the spice / Roll the L’s tight, keep the rhymes right / Yo, I just made this motherf*cker up last night” β€” and Left Eye’s fiery closer (a nod to the fire she set to her boyfriend Andre Rison’s mansion in 1994) β€” “I be the one to blame as the flames keep risin’ / To the top and it don’t stop.” Even Da Brat, unsurprisingly, impressed with her quick delivery and candid bars β€” “Y’all see how these bogus n***as try not to notice the dopest b*tches / Approachin’ with good intentions but focusin’ on they riches / If it’s too hot, then get the f*ck up out the kitchen! / N***as’ dicks stay lifted when they thinkin’ of me.”

Employing a pass-the-mic technique, the group of five didn’t have to fight for their individual moments. And with their historic collaboration, they put to bed the myth that only one woman in hip-hop could have the spotlight at a time β€” a theory they’d keep dispelling with future performances of their song.

The first time Kim, Elliott, Martinez, Da Brat, and Left Eye all united onstage to perform their collab was at the 1997 MTV VMAs. It’d be nearly another two decades before a “Ladies Night” reunion with the original players (sans Martinez and the late Left Eye) came to pass at the 2014 Soul Train Awards, where they were joined by Total, MC Lyte, The Lady of Rage, and Yo-Yo. Once again, the song proved to be a uniting force for women in hip-hop, and it didn’t stop there.

“Calling all the female rappers to front. [Hear] me out. ladies night. Hip hop. Unity.”

Beyond its pedestal in hip-hop history, “Ladies Night Remix” also represents the tight bond its collaborators hold near and dear. In December 2014, Da Brat told Ebony Magazine of their Soul Train performance, “I hadn’t performed that song with them since the [1997] MTV Awards. It was just a great feeling. It was great to be reunited with them. . . . It was everything.” Meanwhile, Elliott shared what it meant to create such a legendary record with her fellow femcees, explaining: “True friendship is very important to me and I cherish these women because I’m a fan of both [Da Brat and Kim] . . . It means so much for us to have a classic record that has been around for over 16 years and very strong women coming together on one track is epic. Even all these years later, we can perform it with just as much energy as we had when we first recorded over a decade ago.”

To this day, “Ladies Night Remix” is considered a certified hip-hop classic. Vibe Magazine declared it “one of hip-hop’s most impactful female rap collaborations,” while Noisey called it “one of the most important posse cuts in rap history.” And in more recent years, calls for a modern-day rendition of “Ladies Night Remix” haven’t let up, either.

In 2017, Kim suggested redoing the record with artists like Cardi B and Remy Ma, per UPROXX. And in June, Coi Leray tweeted, “Ain’t been a #1 rap song at all this year. Calling all the female rappers to front. [Hear] me out. ladies night. Hip hop. Unity. #splash🎏🌊 let’s make history with a number 1 … together .. with love. #justanidea.” Martinez, meanwhile, responded to requests for a new female rap anthem that same month during a “Good Morning America” interview. She said, “We talk about where we are now in the culture, where we’ve come from, and one of the things that we’re talking about is how many amazing women are in the culture right now. There are so many [female] artists. There were times in hip-hop where that was not the case, so it’s really great to see that now.” And yes, she agrees hip-hop listeners are due for another all-women collaboration: “There are a lot of women collaborating with each other but, yeah, a big anthem like that would be fun to see.”

Only time will tell if a new group of women in rap will muster up the same magic for their own “Ladies Night Remix.” But over 25 years later, the collaboration continues to age like fine wine, and its pioneering efforts in nurturing hip-hop’s sisterhood remain undisputed.

  • Tory Lanez Receives 10-Year Prison Sentence For Megan Thee Stallion Shooting

Tory Lanez Receives 10-Year Prison Sentence For Megan Thee Stallion Shooting

    [ad_1]

Tory Lanez has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting Megan Thee Stallion in 2020, according to NBC Los Angeles. The sentencing was delivered on Aug. 8 after a two-day hearing in Los Angeles. Lanez faced a maximum sentence of more than 22 years in prison.

“Since I was viciously shot by the defendant, I have not experienced a single day of peace,” Megan said during the trial via a statement read by Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Kathy Ta on Aug. 7, per NBC Los Angeles. “Slowly but surely, I’m healing and coming back, but I will never be the same.” Meanwhile, lawyers for Lanez requested that he be put on probation and allowed to attend a residential substance abuse program. Reps for Lanez and Megan did not immediately respond to POPSUGAR’s request for comment.

Prosecutors were originally seeking a 13-year sentence for Lanez, per The New York Times. “The defendant actively invited harassment of the victim by spreading misinformation to his large following in an effort to galvanize the public against the victim and even the prosecution team without any regard to the dangers it posed,” the prosecution’s sentencing memorandum read, per The Times. “The defendant has weaponized misinformation to his large following to such a degree that it has left a lasting traumatic impact on the victim.”

The shooting trial reached a verdict on Dec. 23, 2022, when a jury found Lanez, real name Daystar Peterson, guilty of three felony counts: assault with a semiautomatic handgun; carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle; and discharging a firearm with gross negligence, reports The New York Times.

Megan (legally named Megan Jovon Ruth Pete) and Lanez’s shooting incident has been making headlines ever since it occurred on July 12, 2020. When reports of the shooting first broke, it was unclear what exactly took place, only that Megan was shot in the foot β€” which the rapper had to confirm with a photo of her gunshot wound. But on Aug. 20, 2020, during an Instagram Live video, Megan alleged that Lanez was the gunman who shot her after claiming that his publicist intentionally tried to spread false information about the shooting, for which she was hospitalized.

Lanez repeatedly denied Megan’s claims over the years, even releasing an album in September 2020 titled “Daystar,” where he told his side of the incident. On his song “Money Over Fallouts,” Lanez rapped, “Megan people tryna frame me for a shootin’ . . . Gotta see a couple questions: How the f*ck you get shot in your foot, don’t hit no bones or tendons? / How the f*ck your team is tryna to paint me as some whole menace?”

Prior to their trial, Megan addressed her shooting on several occasions, the first notable moment (following her Instagram Live video) being her “Saturday Night Live” performance in October 2020, where she advocated for the protection of Black women. Just a couple of days later, Megan penned an op-ed for The New York Times titled “Megan Thee Stallion: Why I Speak Up for Black Women,” where she doubled down on her “protect Black women” stance.

In April 2022, Megan spoke in detail about the shooting for her first television interview since the incident occurred, sitting with Gayle King on “CBS Mornings.” During the interview, Megan recounted details from that summer evening and the events that led up to the shooting, including an argument that she claims began between “the two people in the backseat,” which were presumably Lanez and her friend at the time, Kelsey Nicole.

In the weeks leading up to Lanez and Megan’s trial, the latter called out Drake for seemingly taking a dig at her shooting in his song “Circo Loco” featuring 21 Savage. Read ahead for more on what happened during Megan and Lanez’s trial.

What Happened During Megan Thee Stallion and Tory Lanez’s Shooting Trial?

The trial began on Dec. 12, 2022. Lanez’s defense attempted to suggest in court that another shooter could have been to blame for Megan’s injuries. But the “Thot Sh*t” artist identified Lanez in her powerful testimony on Dec. 13, 2022.

Megan has been heavily scrutinized since she first spoke out about the shooting and throughout the trial. And that scrutiny has been incredibly damaging: in her testimony, Megan expressed suicidal thoughts, saying, “I wish he would have just shot and killed me, if I knew I would have to go through this torture.”

Megan also addressed the reasons that she didn’t initially tell police officers that she’d been shot β€” a point that had been called into question time and again. “This was the height of police brutality and George Floyd,” she said, according to Billboard. “I didn’t want to see anybody die. I didn’t want to die.” She added that she was concerned about how coming forward about the shooting would affect her career, as well.

On Dec. 22, 2022, a day ahead of the guilty verdict, her boyfriend Pardison “Pardi” Fontaine posted a message about the trial to Instagram Stories, saying, “To any women especially ones of color [who have] suffered an injustice I feel for you . . . When you do find the courage to speak up .. it seems you will be ridiculed .. your credibility will [be] questioned .. your entire past will be held under a magnifying glass.”

The Los Angeles jury deliberated for one day before convicting Lanez. After the jury was dismissed from the courtroom, Lanez’s father called the prosecutors “evil, wicked people,” and was subsequently removed from the courtroom, reports AP. Lanez will be sentenced at a later date; he faces up to 22 years in prison, per AP.

“The jury got it right,” Megan’s attorney Alex Spiro said, according to AP. “I am thankful there is justice for Meg.”

  • Lupita Nyong’o, Jennifer Garner, and More Stars Support the 2023 Actors’ Strike

Lupita Nyong’o, Jennifer Garner, and More Stars Support the 2023 Actors’ Strike

    [ad_1]

Stars are coming together to share support for the Screen Actors Guild β€” American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strike, which officially commenced on July 14 after ongoing negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) failed. News of the actors’ strike came a little over two months after the Writers Guild of America’s (WGA) labor union declared a writers’ strike on May 2, which celebrities also showed support for.

The actors’ strike had been brewing since SAG-AFTRA headed into negotiations with producers in June, aiming to secure better wages and working conditions as well as protections against artificial intelligence, per CNBC. Due to the strike, actors who are part of the union are not allowed to promote their old, current, or upcoming onscreen projects. The writers’ strike, meanwhile, loomed for months after the WGA and AMPTP failed to reach an agreement on their next three-year contract, largely over disputes of compensation for writers. As a result, all members of the WGA vowed not to write or sell new scripts for TV shows or movies until the union votes to end the strike.

Since the writers’ and actors’ strikes began, some of Hollywood’s biggest names have spoken out in support and solidarity. Everyone from Margot Robbie and Cillian Murphy to Keke Palmer and Matt Damon have voiced support for the actors’ strike, which SAG-AFTRA union president Fran Drescher said on July 13 is the result of actors being “victimized by a very greedy entity,” per The A.V. Club. Drescher added, “I am shocked by the way the people that we have been in business with are treating us.”

Drescher went on to highlight the critical importance of the strike as artificial intelligence ramps up. “We are all going to be in jeopardy of being replaced by machines and big business, who cares more about Wall Street than you and your family,” she said in a press conference. “Most of Americans don’t have more than $500 in an emergency. This is a very big deal and it weighed heavy on us. But at some point, you have to say, ‘No, we’re not going to take this anymore. You people are crazy. What are you doing? Why are you doing this?’”

Actors join a number of stars who have already shown support for the writers’ strike. On June 15, Tina Fey, Sara Bareilles, and Lin-Manuel Miranda stepped out at a rally in New York City’s Times Square to stand in solidarity with the striking writers. Then on June 25, singer-songwriter Muni Long expressed her public support of the strike during the 2023 BET Awards.

Previously, celebrities like Colin Farrell and Pete Davidson supported the writers’ strike by stopping by WGA picket lines in May. Drew Barrymore also showed her support by pulling out of her 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards hosting gig in solidarity with the writers, her rep confirmed to POPSUGAR on May 4.

“I have listened to the writers, and in order to truly respect them, I will pivot from hosting the MTV Movie & TV Awards live in solidarity with the strike,” Barrymore said in a statement. “Everything we celebrate and honor about movies and television is born out of their creation. And until a solution is reached, I am choosing to wait.”

Ahead of the writers’ strike, many stars who attended this year’s Met Gala on May 1 spoke to Variety about their thoughts on it, with Brian Tyree Henry saying, “I just hope that everyone is treated equally. I hope they get what they deserve and I hope people listen to them. People strike for a reason.” Amanda Seyfried also spoke to the outlet on the red carpet and said, “I don’t get what the problem is,” adding that the strike is “necessary.” “Everything changed with streaming and everyone should be compensated for their work. It’s f*cking easy.”

Elsewhere, TV creators like “Abbott Elementary” star Quinta Brunson told AP News, “I’m a member of WGA and support WGA, and them getting β€” we, us β€” getting what we need.”

Since the writers’ and actors’ strikes kicked off, many TV shows and movies have been forced to shut down production (i.e., filming and airing new episodes), including “Saturday Night Live,” which canceled an episode that was to be hosted by show alum Davidson. On May 3, “SNL” star Bowen Yang, who joined the strike, told The Hollywood Reporter of the comedy sketch show, “I’m really disappointed. We had a few good shows left, I think. We all came back rested and ready to work on Monday.” He added, “Pete was very excited to host, even though he knew there was a big asterisk on the week, and there was a looming possibility it might not happen. I think we were all ready to give it our all for the next three weeks before the season ended.”

Other celebrities who have shared support for the actors’ and writers’ strikes include Jennifer Garner, Daniel Radcliffe, Lupita Nyong’o, Auli’i Cravalho, Hilary Duff, George Clooney, Brian Cox, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Kerry Washington, Jason Sudeikis, America Ferrera, Gina Prince-Bythewood, Mark Ruffalo, Mariska Hargitay, Lisa Ann Walter, Ayo Edebiri, and many more. • Kingsley Ben-Adir Transforms Into Bob Marley in First Trailer For the Reggae Icon’s Biopic

Kingsley Ben-Adir Transforms Into Bob Marley in First Trailer For the Reggae Icon’s Biopic

    [ad_1]

Kingsley Ben-Adir is legendary musician and reggae pioneer Bob Marley in Paramount Pictures’s forthcoming biopic, “Bob Marley: One Love.” The “One Night in Miami” breakout star was announced to portray the famed Jamaican artist in February 2022 in a film expected to celebrate the life and legacy of Marley β€” and we finally have a first look at his transformation.

Paramount dropped the first trailer for the sweeping movie on July 6, billing it as Marley’s “powerful story of overcoming adversity and the journey behind his revolutionary music.” The film is directed by “King Richard” director Reinaldo Marcus Green, with “King Richard” writer Zach Baylin behind the screenplay. The project was also produced in partnership with the Marley family β€” a crucial part for Green and Marley’s son, Ziggy, one of the film’s producers.

“To get the blessing of Ziggy and the family to come on and be the steward of the ship was significant for me because I knew that I was gonna get access to things that aren’t in the public domain: real conversations and memories from people who were there in the room,” Green told Entertainment Weekly of giving the movie authenticity. Ziggy added that making his father’s biopic was “exciting and emotional” and he “was very focused on making sure that we represented him right.” “Being given that responsibility to help Reinaldo was a very serious thing for me,” he continued. “We explored different elements of Bob that people don’t know, different emotions that he went through. I actually learned some stuff, too. As someone who was there in this time period, it brings back a lot of memories and things that were hidden inside of me before. It was a very emotional journey.”

Unlike most biopics that encompass a majority of a subject’s life, EW reported that “Bob Marley: One Love” will hone in on the events that led up to Marley’s performance at the One Love Peace Concert in 1978, which occurred amid Jamaica’s violent political crisis at the time. “We knew from the very beginning that we didn’t want to do a cradle-to-grave story,” Green added. “So it’s a snapshot of his life that speaks to his entire life. There are flashes to his earlier life and childhood, but it’s not about when he was born and when he died. We felt this movie was more about how his music lives on and how his message continues to spread.”

Prior to taking on the role of Marley, Ben-Adir played the late Malcolm X in Regina King’s Oscar-nominated film, receiving critical praise for his performance. The British actor also starred in a number of TV shows, including “Love Life,” “High Fidelity,” “Peaky Blinders,” “Secret Invasion,” and more. Paramount saw much success with the release of its 2019 biopic for Elton John, “Rocketman,” and it also has a Bee Gees biopic queued up β€” set to be directed by Kenneth Branagh. Now it looks to score another big win by bringing Marley’s story to the big screen for the very first time.

Ahead, check out the trailer for “Bob Marley: One Love” and find out everything else we know about the film.
