Organic bedding brand Coyuchi recently launched its own organic mattress, combining cotton, wool, and Dunlop latex atop individually wrapped coils. While Coyuchi’s linen sheets are excellent, I was a little nervous to try the company’s first mattress effort. Bedding is not a mattress, after all, and expertise does not always transfer across endeavors. In this case, though, it did. Coyuchi’s organic Natural REM Mattress is wonderfully firm without being too firm and perfect for those of us who lack a sleeping style and tend to sleep every which way—side, back, stomach. I was never uncomfortable.
The design starts with encased coils on a wool pad and then, like a Midwestern dip, layers in smaller coils, latex, and then wool, and tops it off with an organic cotton cover. There’s surprisingly good edge support considering the distance between the coils and the top, and the mattress provides good motion isolation as well. Coyuchi says the Natural REM can be used with or without a box spring. I tested it for a few months on a box spring and then spent a week with it just on the floor and did not notice a difference. At 11 inches deep, there’s room for a topper, though I did not feel the need.
The cotton and wool layers are GOTS-certified organic, while the Dunlop latex carries the GOLS certification. The material is undyed, which is great for anyone bothered by industrial dyes. As with most of these organic options, the Coyuchi is made without chemicals, foam, or glues. Coyuchi’s Natural REM organic mattress is made to order in the United States and comes with a 100-night trial, which means you can get a full refund if it doesn’t work for you. —Scott Gilbertson
Coyuchi Natural REM ranges from $1,400 for a twin to $2,400 for a California king.

The Thuma Hybrid offers three firmness options: Plush, Medium, and Firm. I chose Medium because my partner and I (mainly me) fluctuate between different sleeping positions. We both are side sleepers for the most part, but often, I revert to being a stomach sleeper sometime in the night. Both of these sleeping positions require more lumbar support to prevent back pain. But from the first night of testing, it was undeniable that this mattress had a firmer feel. In my experience, beds with medium firmness typically range between a 5 and 6.5 on a scale of 10, with 10 being the firmest setting available on a bed. With Thuma Hybrid’s innerspring pocketed coils and firmer Dunlop latex, I would rank it as a 7 out of 10. In fact, I would guess that the “Firm” Thuma Hybrid may be comparable to the Plank Firm, one of the firmest mattresses our team has ever tested.
As time went on and my body adjusted to the mattress’s feel, I could sense a slight increase in softness and sink around my body. But in terms of pressure relief, I did notice slight tension around my hips and shoulders. It was nothing that disrupted my sleep, but I could easily see it doing so for those with joint pain in these areas.
But that doesn’t take away who I really think this bed is a star for: couples, stomach sleepers, and heavy-bodied sleepers. Couples, especially ones who are interested in the best mattress for sex, may find a firm mattress to help not only with differing sleep positions, but also support for other positions. Stomach sleepers (and back sleepers who prefer a firmer bed) require a bed that provides adequate lumbar support. Lastly, heavy-bodied sleepers, or those with larger frames who weigh over 250 pounds, may be happy with this mattress’s level of firmness. This is because with more body mass, the bed has more give. A too-soft bed can also contribute to the development of back pain over time, as the spine sinks out of alignment. The high-end materials that compose the Thuma Hybrid should enhance overall support and durability and help prevent back pain.

Photograph: Julia Forbes
In the end, the Thuma Hybrid will likely be a classic case of “give your body time to get used to it”—particularly if you’re someone with a smaller- to average-weight frame. Heavier-bodied sleepers may be good to go from the jump. Would I personally classify the Thuma Hybrid as more of a medium-firm, rather than a medium? No, especially since mattresses typically soften up over time. However, the reality is that people generally aren’t in the mood to wait that long—there’s a reason most brands, Thuma included, require all 30 nights in the sleep trial to elapse before a return is allowed.
However, for stomach sleeping, couples, and sex, this mattress is a star—especially when paired with a Thuma bed frame. My next project will be getting my dogs on board with their own Thuma setup, as the brand has recently launched its own dog bed. But it’s safe to say that I’ve joined my teammates as the new member of the (unofficial, but we can make T-shirts) Thuma fan club.
People take a lot of pride in their bedroom abilities. Saatva takes great pride in crafting luxurious, handmade mattresses. To maintain the good work in both situations, the Saatva Classic features an innerspring construction very conducive to lovemaking. There are actually two coil types at play here: pocketed coils beneath the pillow top, and firmer traditional coils at the base. Pocketed coils are better at responding to the situation above them, as they can provide individualized support that homes in on high-weight areas. Whether that’s your lower back while you’re sleeping, or your hands and knees when you’re more active, pocketed coils are adaptable. Traditional coils are interwoven, so they compress together. While the overall support isn’t as targeted, it still has its merits in terms of durability, edge support, full-body pushback, and airflow, particularly when things get hot and heavy. Together, they create a surface that’s easy to move around on and gives you some bounce to work with, which you’ll appreciate more in the moment as opposed to sinking too much. Use that bounce to your advantage.
Buyers can choose from Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, or Firm. I’d recommend you stick to the firmer options to avoid overt sinking, which can be a buzzkill. You can also select your ideal mattress height, with options of either 11.5 inches or 14.5 inches. The variance in firmness and height also opens up this mattress for all kinds of couples to enjoy, not just for sex but for sleeping as well. Couples with different body types and sleeping positions can find an option that works for both, such as Luxury Firm, which would suit both side sleepers and stomach sleepers. Every Saatva Classic comes with an extra lumbar support layer and quilting, regardless of height or firmness. For added coziness, the Classic features an organic cotton pillow top that gently hugs the body.
The Saatva Classic ranges from $1,399 for a twin mattress to $3,078 for a split California king.
If you want to talk about a star student, valedictorian, and top of the class for latex mattresses, organic stalwart Avocado Green has a streak like no other. The core component of all the company’s beds, the Green Hybrid included, is latex. But Avocado goes so far as to throw down receipts on how organic, natural, and traceable it is–13 certifications (see them all here) is a ton of work to achieve, and Avocado’s piling them up like the “good job” stickers you used to get when acing a test.
WIRED reviewer Scott Gilbertson was in charge of putting the Avocado Green Hybrid to the test, and it scored a 9 out of 10 by the time he was done with it. Dunlop latex is the firmer type of latex (see our FAQs, below, for the different types typically used) and the basis for this bed, along with an organic cotton-and-wool cover and pocketed coils. Scott noticed that although the materials didn’t perform strongly in stopping motion and shaking when his kids jumped in, they did a near-perfect job of keeping him from feeling too warm or unsupported at the edges. An important note from his testing: The base Avocado Green model is the firmest and uses Dunlop latex to achieve this feel. Thus, it is better suited for stomach and back sleepers who often thrive with this level of support. For increased softness and pressure relief, side sleepers or those who prefer a softer feel have the option to choose either a pillow or a box top that uses softer-feeling Talalay latex. However, it does incur an extra charge.
Avocado Green ranges from $1,499 for a twin mattress to $2,899 for a California king.

As a side sleeper who struggles with chronic illness, I require support and pressure relief in a mattress. This is where I like the Saatva Rx as a specialty option for those dealing with literal pain points. The Rx, if you couldn’t already infer from the name, was designed for more medically inclined situations where you need to treat joints with care.
By following a hybrid design of therapeutic foams and pocketed coils, the Rx manages to pull this off. While this may not be the firmest option to support sleepers with back pain, WIRED reviewer Nena Farrell found that the softer appeal speaks to side sleepers. She reports that her joints felt weightless with no pressure buildup. The Rx features an organic cotton cover, support quilting, and a focused layer in the middle of the bed for lumbar support, incorporating microcoils, phase change material, and graphite-infused memory foams. Additionally, it includes pocketed coils, with extra reinforcement on the edges for enhanced edge support. Another perk for pain purposes? This mattress also comes with included white glove delivery, so you won’t have to handle the setup and removal of your old mattress.

As foreboding as it sounds, nothing lasts forever—not even your mattress, sheets, and pillows. It’s essential to know how often to replace your mattress and bedding, not just for hygiene reasons, but for ensuring you’re getting optimal support and comfort to aid in sleep. I have seen some severe cases of people using wildly outdated or damaged mattresses (think 20 years or more, or covered in duct tape), and pillows so shredded into tatters that it makes you wonder how they even resembled pillows in the first place.
Please don’t do this. I beg of you! Not only because I’m a professional mattress tester and certified sleep science coach, but also because I can tell you confidently that this is not helping your sleep.
Let’s break down the lifespan of key items in your bedroom, so that when they break down, you’re expecting it. In terms of replacements, not to worry, as we have got you covered there too. From pillows and cooling sheets to the best mattresses, we’ve tested it all.

Tiami
Luxury Hybrid Mattress
You’ve probably heard this statistic before: You spend a third of your life asleep on your bed. That alone justifies the cost of a quality bed built to support you and your needs. But with nightly use inevitably comes the breakdown of materials. Think of car mileage stacking up with every drive—sleeping on a mattress isn’t too far off. The rate of deterioration will depend on factors like how many sleepers are using the bed, their respective body types, the mattress materials themselves, the surrounding bedroom temperature, and the bed frame you’re using.
Your mattress has to hold up sleepers with consistent support, and the frame needs to hold up the mattress so it can do its job. Over time, sagging can happen along the edges of the mattress or even in the middle of the bed if there’s not enough support.
This is also where the type of mattress you have comes into play. All-foam mattresses will deteriorate a lot faster than hybrid mattresses, as the interior coils of a hybrid maintain structural integrity. So when you see reinforced coils for edge support, it’s not just about keeping you supported while you sit and lie at the edge; it’s also a means of preventing edges from sagging over time.
You can expect that a new mattress will last you anywhere from eight to 10 years. If you see any premature sagging, cracking, or issues with materials before then, that is a sign of a defective product, and it would be a good idea to check your warranty.
What About Mattress Toppers?
Photograph: Kat Merck
Saatva
Graphite Memory Foam Mattress Topper
Mattress toppers are great because they give your mattress some extra support and can extend its life. They’re not infallible, though—if you’re using a topper to beef up an already past-its-prime mattress and the topper starts to lose steam, the jig is up. Since toppers are usually just a slab of foam (sometimes, microcoils), they’re going to compress rather quickly. Again, depending on your build and usage of the topper, you’re looking at anywhere from three to five years—maybe a smidge more depending on the thickness and density of the foam used. And, depending on the setting you were using your topper in (like, in a college dorm), you may want to consider retiring it immediately afterward.
When to Replace Your Pillows
Photograph: Nena Farrell
Coop Sleep Goods
Original Adjustable Cutout Pillow
Finding a comfy pillow is tricky business—one could argue even more so than a mattress. Unfortunately, they have a much shorter lifespan than mattresses. Depending once again on a pillow’s fill, two years is usually the max. Some pillow life spans may even be shorter than that, so you’ll just have to keep an eye on its appearance when you regularly wash it (that wasn’t a suggestion by the way, more like an order). Your pillow soaks up body fluids like drool and sweat, which can easily turn into yellow stains (not to mention smells) without proper cleaning and maintenance. The fill can also easily bunch up over time, especially with fillings like shredded latex and foam. The easiest telltale sign that it’s time for your pillow to go, though, is neck pain. As soon as you sense your pillow is becoming your cervical alignment’s downfall, it’s time for it to go.
When to Replace Your Sheets

Bamboo Sheet Set
Sheets can be a little more slippery (and not just because of the material) when it comes to gauging how long they’ll last. And by sheets, I mean a fitted sheet, top sheet, and pillowcases—your standard sheet set. If you have a go-to set that you use and wash weekly, two to three years of use is a reasonable estimate based on how well the material holds up. The life of your sheet set can be even longer with certain weaves and materials, and by following washing and care instructions precisely as directed.
For example, my bamboo sateen Cozy Earth sheets have held up well past the three-year mark. I credit the strength of the bamboo viscose and sateen weave, and following the washing instructions with care, for this long-lasting result. Plus, if you’re spending a mint on some nice sheets, I strongly encourage you to treat them like they’re made of butterfly wings and unicorn hair anyway.
Peeking at some percale sheet sales? WIRED reviewer Nena Farrell really liked the long-staple Supima cotton sheets from Buffy, which are a good contender if you’re looking to stay cool at night. I also love my Buffy Breeze comforter, which is perfect for when the nights start to get a bit cooler and the fall temperatures roll around. The Lyocell material doesn’t make me feel like I’m roasting, yet it maintains a weightier feel than your average blanket. As part of Buffy’s Labor Day sales, you can take 20 percent off the entire site and 30 percent off of bedding sets, no code needed.
Coop Sleep Goods
I just kicked off testing pillows from Cool Sleep Goods, but early read: I really, really like them. If you’d like to test together and share your thoughts hypothetically, Labor Day’s a good time to stock up on some serious pillow inventory. Consider this a book club, but we only discuss sleep products—that would actually be my dream. Coop is offering 20 percent off its entire site, PLUS a free silk (!) pillowcase for orders over $150 and 40 percent off clearance (you still get the pillowcase if you spend over $150 here too!).
Crescent pillow, not moon: Coop Crescent Pillow for $79 (20 percent off)—No Code Needed
Slumber Cloud
If you’re a hot sleeper, I can’t recommend these sheets enough, and they’re on sale right now. They feel like silky bamboo since they’re made with Tencel lyocell, but are added together with a proprietary blend of viscose designed to keep you cool. That blend includes phase change material, or PCM, to absorb heat. It’s added to the sheets as a gel, but even after dozens of uses and washes (as two hot sleepers, my husband and I always grab these sheets when I’m not testing something new!), it’s still holding up great and keeping us cool. Slumber Cloud also makes a cooling pillow that feels like a down alternative if you need more cooling in your bedroom. Both have a discount right now ahead of Labor Day. —Nena Farrell
The Company Store
I know it’s still very warm outside for many of us, especially as we hold onto these final dregs of summer. On the other hand, this is the time to plan ahead, which is why The Company Store’s sheet sale is perfect timing for Labor Day. WIRED’s sheets reviewer, Nena Farrell, is a big fan of this brand’s flannel sheets, so if you’re looking forward to cozy autumnal days, now’s the time to grab a set so you’re prepared. If you need some organizational help, the brand’s storage bags can also keep sheets tidy.
Bedsure
I’ve sung Bedsure’s cooling sheets‘ praises many times. And now I’m going to do it again: The brand’s temperature-regulating bamboo creates a cool, silky-feeling sleep space, and for how much I use them, they’ve held up very well. The brand’s GentleSoft sheets are already very affordable, but it’s always fun to find an even better deal for them.
Cozy Earth
Big, big fan of all things Cozy Earth. From sheets, pajamas, to even the bamboo body pillow, I’m collecting all the products they offer like Pokémon in my free time. The bamboo sheets are my coveted sheet set because they swaddle me in a feeling of cool, glorious silkiness. Sales are not as frequent with Cozy Earth, so it’s go time! Use our code WIRED to get 35 percent off the entire site.
Even though summer’s coming to a close, depending on where you live, the hot days aren’t over yet. Cooling sheets are a must for many to use year-round, and Brooklinen’s Classic Percale had a nice, crispy feel to them, according to WIRED Reviewer Nena Farrell. And right now, you can get 25 percent off the entire site.
It’s always an exciting day when I get to try out a new mattress brand. Tiami comes from the founder of Leesa, bringing some serious credentials—Leesa’s Sapira Chill is our favorite hybrid mattress. Will Tiami be able to live up to its famous sibling? I’m a certified sleep science coach with more than five and a half years of mattress testing experience, and here are my thoughts after a week of sleeping on this bed.
What Makes Tiami Tick
Photograph: Julia Forbes
Tiami’s raison d’être is its special features meant to promote better pressure relief and full-body support. However, Tiami is not the first to make this claim. When I initially chatted with Leesa founder and Tiami cofounder David Wolfe, he explained that Tiami’s going after ultra-luxury brands like Hästens, Kluft, and Vispring, which Wolfe says are “great mattresses, but extraordinarily expensive.” (For reference, Hästens’ Vividus model costs $350,000. I’ve never tested a bed of this caliber, but I did once try to visit a Hästens storefront, where I was promptly asked to leave since I didn’t have an appointment.)
Tiami’s hybrid design starts with a 90 percent organic, Oeko-Tex certified organic cotton cover for natural breathability and softness. The brand really hypes up its “Mediterranean-inspired wave design,” a sort of embossed texture on the surface, as a luxury feature. However, I don’t think this matters. You’re going to be throwing a mattress protector and sheets over the bed; you won’t be able to appreciate the Santorini vibes.
The initial memory foam layer underneath uses a proprietary, temperature-responsive foam called Energex, which is supposed to react better to body heat than the usual foams out there to provide pressure relief and bounciness for when you move. Candidly, all memory foam is supposed to absorb heat to do this, but I found the Energex did a good job with these performance aspects—more on that in a minute.
Photograph: Julia Forbes
As for the rest of the mattress construction, another memory foam layer underneath helps supplement the Energex. Wolfe told me that instead of using glue, the foam layers are fused and then zoned and ventilated, so you can enjoy the trifecta of softness for pressure points, lumbar support, and airflow. After the foam, we then get to what I consider the star of this particular mattress’s show: the coils. In the Tiami, pocketed coils get an upgrade, too. Each has an Energex foam “cap” to really max out the pressure relief capabilities of this bed.
The best Labor Day mattress sales are here, and if you’ve been looking for a sign from the universe to upgrade your bed, consider this it. I’ve been a professional mattress tester for five years, so I’m plugged in to what’s going on in the mattress world (we’re constantly scoping out new additions to our best mattresses list) and can keep track of the sales that really are the ones to watch … and which ones you can skip until Cyber Monday.
While white pants are about to be out of season (if you follow that tradition), crisp white sheets are all-season, baby. We’ll have updates on those sales as well in the weeks ahead, so you can get the best bedsheets to go with your new mattress.
Updated August 25, 2025: As we get closer to Labor Day weekend, we’ve added increased discounts from Nolah and Bear, as well as sheets sales from The Company Store and Bedsure.
WIRED Featured Deals
The Best Labor Day Mattress Sales
We’re still a few days out from the holiday weekend, but the early Labor Day mattress sales just come sooner and sooner each year. Not that we’re complaining, and I don’t think you are either! We track prices to see where the actual deals are, not just tweaked sales lingo.
Helix
It’s always a good sign when you start your Labor Day mattress deals list off strong. Not only because the deal itself is good, but also because this particular mattress is the best one we’ve tested so far. The Helix Midnight Luxe is a side sleeper’s dream, mainly because it was made especially for that purpose. That’s the whole premise of Helix, where every sleeping position and body type can find a mattress that serves it. For Labor Day, there’s an especially good deal going. Promotions usually are 20 percent off, but surprise! Use our code WIRED27 for 27 percent off this holiday weekend.
Nearly a decade ago, I started waking up with back pain. Some days were just aches, others I woke up to throwing out my back. I found out I have two permanent conditions in my spine: scoliosis, a sideways curvature in my spine that developed in my mid-twenties (usually teens develop it, but I’m just special), and spondylosis in my lower back, which is abnormal wear and tear on the cartilage in the spine. Both caused serious pain overnight and in the morning, but it turned out my flimsy, unsupportive mattress was the secondary culprit. It didn’t offer the support I needed and resulted in flare-ups of pain.
I’ve tried everything: mattress pads, knee pillows, and mattresses that ranged from super soft foam to firm planks. Some of these things worked, some didn’t. I, or another WIRED reviewer, slept on the mattresses below for at least seven nights each, and monitored how they affected our back pain during the night and following morning. My husband also gave me his feedback, even though he isn’t plagued with chronic back problems.
After all these nights of sleeping on the job, I’ve found which mattresses left my back aches and pressure pains in the past. Below are our favorites to sleep on if you have back pain, plus advice for how to navigate back pain and sleep overall. While you’re here, don’t miss our related buying guides, including the Best Mattresses, Best Pillows, and Best Sheets, for an all-around best sleeping experience. All of the prices shown below are for queen-size models.

Birch is made by the same folks over at Helix, but the Birch line is eco-friendly and makes some of the best organic mattresses out there. Birch is running a 25 percent off sale plus two free pillows for any mattress purchase (use the code LDW25 at checkout). It’s similar sale to what we saw Birch run around the fourth of July and Memorial Day, but still a solid deal. But if you want a better deal, furniture store Raymour & Flannigan is also running a sale and currently selling Birch’s Luxe Natural Mattress for $200 cheaper than Birch. Both have the more affordable Birch Natural for the same price, though.
Avocado
Avocado makes our favorite organic mattress, and for Labor Day the company is running an up to 20 percent off sale. The mattress that we recommend is currently 15 percent off, but only $100 off the usual price, since we often see a 10 percent discount of some kind for Avocado. This is a little better than we usually find, and the same price we’ve seen for other big deal events like Memorial Day.
Leesa
Leesa has made fantastic mattresses for years that tend to always find themselves as our top runner-up mattress recommendation. The Leesa Sapira Hybrid was our number two pick for years as a great all-around mattress, especially for the price (and that’s before the Labor Day sale!), while the new Leesa Sapira Chill recently jumped into that spot with its fantastic cooling cover. The sale isn’t great so far, but it includes two free pillows.
Casper
Casper is pretty famous in the mattress-in-a-box world. The brand recently remade its entire mattress line, and Casper’s new base mattress, The One, is now our favorite all-foam mattress. It’s already a super affordable mattress, but it’s still on sale for Labor Day for a nice little discount. We usually see it for under $900, and now you can get it for $800 instead.
Other Labor Day Mattress Sales
These sales aren’t as great as the ones above, and are often sales you can find year-round. Still, it’s a fine price we’d usually recommend buying these mattresses for, even if it’s not the best discount in town. We’ll update this guide as we get closer to Labor Day with any changes that might make these sales better (or worse!)
Photograph: Plank
Brooklyn Bedding
I’m a recent convert to plank-style mattresses after trying Brooklyn Bedding’s Plank Firm Natural mattress. But we like a few different firm mattresses from Brooklyn Bedding, all of which are on sale right now for 25 percent off with the code LABORDAY25. The code should be automatically applied when you add the mattress to your cart. It’s not a great sale—this is usually the price we see these mattresses listed for. Still, usually we recommend buying them at this price.
Bear
Bear makes our favorite side sleeper mattress, the Bear Elite. Bear is running an up to 35 percent off price right now, but the $1,499 price is one we usually see it available for, so it’s not a particularly exciting sale. Still, it’s the price we recommend scoring it for over the higher price tag it does go up to from time to time.
Purple
If you’re a hot sleeper, start shopping: we think Purple makes the best cooling mattress. Purple’s site has up to $500 off the Restore line, but our recommended mattress is only $300 off—and we often see it for $300 off anyway. Still, it’s a great mattress if you want to sleep cooler at night.
If you’ve ever tried to consciously change your sleeping position (maybe because of a medical procedure or odd bed) you probably know it’s tough to fight your natural inclinations. The good news for side sleepers is the broad consensus among experts is that it’s at least as good as any other option.
Sleep experts at Houston Methodist say side sleeping has “the least negative impact on health.” Which is great! The only things worse for you than sleeping on your side are not sleeping enough or sleeping in any other position!
I have always envied back sleepers but sleeping on your back is the “worst position” according to the Mayo Clinic, which calls side sleeping “a good way to sleep.”
What type of mattress is best for side sleepers, hybrid or memory foam?
We prefer hybrids for side sleepers. Given that you’re putting more weight on a smaller surface area you might think that memory foam is nicer than a hybrid mattress that has a layer of springs (often called coils). On memory foam, you sink into a fluffy little cloud and get support on the sides. The problem is that when you’re sleeping well and not moving much, over the course of a night, that foam will slowly but surely compress under you. If it’s just one layer of cheap foam, after a while it will feel like you’re sleeping on a yoga mat. That’s why mattresses with multiple layers of foam of different weights are better, and why we like hybrids better yet. That layer of springs means the foam doesn’t compact nearly as much in my experience. A good hybrid gives you a chance to sleep for a solid six hours without needing to change position, which isn’t necessarily the case for me on an all-foam mattress. Hybrids also tend to sleep cooler because there’s less mass of solid foam absorbing heat.
What’s the ideal firmness for side sleepers?
Most side sleepers gravitate toward softer mattresses, which usually means memory foam instead of innerspring mattresses. Over the course of a night, though, you want to be sure you have a mattress with enough support. All types of mattresses can offer that, but be sure to pay close attention to the firmness scale the company advertises and the firmness options within it. Also take your body type into account, as the more body weight you have, the firmer the mattress you’ll want.
What’s the best type of mattress for heavy people who are side-sleepers?
I am a bigger guy—smaller now than when I started testing mattresses, thanks to semaglutide, but still a bigger guy. I’ve found that the bigger you are the firmer you want your mattress, as otherwise your body weight will compress the foam and springs below you too much.

Yes, the athletes’ beds at the Paris 2024 Olympics are indeed made of cardboard. The paper-based berth news, which has aroused curiosity and some skepticism after some videos of athletes circulated online, was confirmed by the organizers of the French Olympic Games, who let it be known that Airweave, the Japanese company that had managed the athletes’ rest in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, has been dubbed the “official bedding supporter of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”
These cardboard beds can be transported unassembled in relatively small containers, and then, once their function is over, they can be recycled. Yet despite the paper construction, the beds themselves, once put together properly, have been designed to be surprisingly sturdy—and for good reason.
“We designed these cardboard beds so that they can support up to three or four people jumping, because after winning a medal, people are very happy,” Motokuni Takaoka, founder and president of Airweave, said.

No-Sex Beds?
The introduction of cardboard beds had reignited a controversy that arose during the Tokyo Olympics. In 2020, American cross-country skier Paul Chelimo expressed his concern by posting a video of the beds and speculating that their apparent fragility could be a way to limit intimacy among athletes. The no-sex bed theory, however, was later debunked, with the distancing measures implemented by the Olympic Committee aimed at reducing the risk of Covid infection.
However, the ban on intimacy between athletes, which had fueled these concerns at the time, was lifted by the Olympic committee last March. Director of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic villages Laurent Michaud told Sky News at the time that the committee would be giving out 300,000 condoms to ensure “everybody will have what they are expecting and what they need.”
As to withstanding the rigors of jumping, celebratory or any other kind, as the athletes’ videos show, the beds are designed to withstand the stress of up to 250 kilograms (550 pounds) in weight, as well as have a customizable modular mattress system with three blocks in different firmness levels that can be adapted to different athletes’ physiques and needs.

Sustainable Slumber
The use of the 16,000 cardboard beds with mattresses that are fully reusable and recyclable for the Paris games is part of a series of initiatives put in place aiming to make these “the Greenest Ever Games,” with another being the cleanup of the Seine River.
Last week, Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo donned a wet suit and goggles, and completely submerged herself in the Seine, where swimming has been banned for the past century, and for 50 years raw sewage was released into the river. The PR stunt was to prove that the water was now clean enough to stage several Olympic swimming events; and three public bathing areas will open in the Games’ aftermath.
My summertime sadness is waking up all night because I am too damn hot. Nothing makes me miserable like the heat, especially at night. Hot nights are unfortunately the price I pay for skipping winter down here in Southern California, but some folks are just hot sleepers no matter the temperature or where they live. Heat can adversely affect your sleep quality, which can affect your health, so it’s important to stay cool at nighttime; if you’re not about to splurge on a cooling mattress, it might be worth considering cooling sheets.
But what makes a good cooling sheet? What exactly is a cooling sheet? These bed sheets typically improve airflow, allowing your body to dissipate heat better than traditional cotton sheets. Linen is a popular choice and is quite breathable, whereas other materials have moisture-wicking and temperature-regulation properties. After sleeping on nearly every sheet for weeks, I’ve concluded that linen and cotton percale make some of the best cooling sheets. But if you want a softer material (or hate percale like me), there are other options too. (All the prices are for queen size.)

What Are Cooling Sheets?
There’s a lot of terminology thrown around in the world of cooling sheets and cooling mattresses. Temperature regulating! Airflow! Moisture wicking! Phase-change material! Most of the time, these features come back to how breathable the sheets are. Breathability means moisture can better evaporate, and “temperature-regulating” usually means the sheets are breathable enough to release the heat and moisture from your body.
What makes sheets breathable? Cotton, flax linen, and bamboo have great breathability, but not all sheets are made equally, so material alone isn’t a guarantee. Weave, as in percale’s one-over-one threads versus sateen’s three-over-one, and weight (including thread count) of the bedding comes into play. Higher thread counts are less breathable, and tighter weaves will be less breathable too. The yarn within the fabric is also important, as well as how twisted it is—a higher twist makes for a smoother, cooler feel to the fabric, while a loose twist isn’t as smooth and can trap heat.
Some companies treat sheets with something called phase-change materials, or PCMs, which are substances that absorb and release energy to either heat or cool an area. “PCMs create a microclimate,” says Karen Leonas, a professor of textile sciences at the Wilson College of Textiles at North Carolina State University. Excess body heat is absorbed by these materials and then released to the body when it’s cool.
These treatments can raise the price of cooling sheets, but they’re not super popular yet, and it’s hard to determine how well incorporated it is into the fabric. “PCMs go through thermal cyclic testing and have shown to last a long time,” Leonas says. “If this is a surface treatment, there is the possibility that some of the microcapsules will be lost due to abrasion.” Parima Ijaz, CEO of Pure Parima agrees and says these treatments sometimes only last up to 10 washes. There’s only a handful of sheets on the market that tout their use of PCMs, and our guide focuses on breathable materials and weaves rather than these treatments. It’s worth noting that PCMs will last much longer on a foam mattress, according to Leonas. If you’re still sweating at night after switching to cooling sheets, try a cooling mattress.
Fourth of July might have you thinking about fireworks and making your family’s favorite summer recipes (mine is my grandmother’s super-vinegary macaroni salad). But don’t sleep on the excellent Fourth of July sales. We usually see mattresses go heavily on sale during President’s Day and Memorial Day, but now these beds are coming to steal Independence Day’s thunder. We’ve vetted the sales and tested all these mattresses (we’ve listed everything in queen size)—these are the ones worth splurging on in between the town parade and catching late-night fireworks.

By default, you’ll see a JULY25 discount code added to your cart. At checkout, change it to JULY30 and you’ll see an even better discount. This is our favorite mattress. We’ve tested tons of mattresses, and the Helix Sleep Midnight Luxe Hybrid pulls ahead thanks to its plush cushion top and a medium-firm feel that’s fantastic for every kind of sleeper. It’s a great mattress for anyone, and right now you can get it with a set of brand-new pillows for a complete bedding set.
Struggling with a few different sleep issues and can’t decide if you want cooling features or alignment support? The Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid is for you. It can solve multiple problems: it gives a nice dose of cooling thanks to a fabric cover that pulls heat away from the body and is super supportive thanks to four foam layers and three different types of coil. It’s a little springy-er than other hybrid mattresses since it has a responsive foam layer instead of memory foam. You can get this mattress right now with sheets and two pillows included.
If you’re a foam mattress lover, you’re in luck: our favorite all-foam mattress is on sale. The One is Casper’s new base mattress in its updated mattress lineup. The 11-inch mattress has a medium-firm feel with its three layers of foam, one of which is an open-cell foam layer to keep it from getting hot like other foam mattresses do. It nicely cradles your hips and provides support too.
By default, you’ll see a JULY25 discount code added to your cart. At checkout, change it to JULY30 and you’ll see an even better discount. This mattress is the tall boy of boxed mattresses, reaching an impressive 16 inches tall. Helix’s Elite line has six levels of softness and two layers, with the level of softness dictated by the foam density of the upper layer. The softer Sunset is the one we recommend, and our editors loved it for the cradling effect. It’s also cooling, thanks to a special fabric Helix uses in its mattresses. Like the Midnight Luxe above, it’s not a major sale price, but you do get two free pillows during the Fourth of July sale.
This is our favorite organic mattress, full stop. WIRED senior reviewer Scott Gilbertson says it’s the only mattress both he (a firm mattress lover) and his wife (a soft mattress fan) agree on because it somehow manages to be both without being too much of either. It’s great for combination sleepers and couples, and lasts–Gilbertson has been sleeping on his for nearly two years. Avocado often has a 10 percent deal going, but this is still $100 cheaper than we usually see it for.
The Birch Luxe’s medium-firm feel and structured support should make it a solid pick for most sleeping styles, but we especially like it for side sleepers. The Luxe uses multiple layers of wool plus a layer of individually wrapped coils, and those coils offer full lumbar support and are arranged to cradle your spine while maintaining a satisfyingly stiff edge on all four sides. It also has a pillow top and an extra layer of blended cashmere that gives it fantastic temperature regulation.
Awara’s hybrid mattress is our favorite affordable organic mattress, especially since it’s on sale right now. The Awara is supportive and bouncy, but the springs can be felt more readily than in other mattresses, while the edges are quite rigid. There’s not much motion transfer, and the soft mattress fabric didn’t run too hot or too cold either during our testing. It’s a great option for the price, both during the sale season and outside of it.
Turmerry’s organic latex mattress aims to solve a problem that plagues latex mattresses. They’re often heavy and expensive and can be hard to find with online retailers. But Turmerry wraps all of its foam layers separately to mail them to you, making it easier to ship and move around, and then you zip it up into an organic cotton cover to hold it all together. WIRED editor Martin Cizmar tested a medium-firm setup and was happy to find Turmerry’s system worked well and felt like a classic latex mattress.
If you and your partner can’t decide on how firm a mattress should be, but both agree you need something cooling, the Bedgear Split Head M3 is the solution you need. When you order it, you can specify between four different firmness levels for each side of the bed so you can each get the mattress you want without having to stick two twins together. The M3’s cooling technology will be included on both sides, with great airflow thanks to perforated, individually wrapped coils and a Ver-Tex cooling cover with air-ventilated panels.
Looking for something firm and cooling? This Sealy mattress has you covered. It’s got Phase Change Material (PCM) built into it that draws away heat from the body and releases it when your body cools back down. It’s 10 inches thick, giving it a lower profile than many other mattresses, and the firm all-foam design is great for back and stomach sleepers. There’s also nearly zero motion transfer, which is great for getting out of bed without waking your partner. It’s a price we often see, but you’ll get a free sheet set, mattress protector, and pillow set with your purchase.
The Leesa Legend Chill is our favorite cooling, medium-firm mattress. WIRED contributor Nicole Kinning usually prefers soft mattresses but was surprised how much she enjoyed sleeping on the firmer Legend Chill. It has great support and cooling qualities, and Nicole found she fell asleep sooner and slept better on this mattress than she expected. The mattress’ quilted top layer feels ultra-luxe and is cool on contact, and the breathable phase-change fibers draw heat away from the body. You’ll get a free set of pillows and microfiber sheets when you buy this mattress during Leesa’s Fourth of July sale, making it a better price than usual for the whole bundle.
The Casper Snow is a new addition to the updated Casper mattress line, and it didn’t disappoint our testers. The medium-feel mattress has cooling technology included throughout it: cooling material in the mattress, three patented HeatDelete bands inside it that promise to dissipate heat, and a patented Snow Cover over the mattress. Besides the cooling features, the Casper Snow has poly foam, memory foam, and pocketed coils, and provides targeted support at the hips, waist, and lower back to alleviate pressure, making it ideal for back and stomach sleepers.
Our favorite side sleeper mattress is firmer than most other side sleeper mattresses you’ll find, but have faith in us: we recommend it for a reason. The 14-inch hybrid mattress has five layers to it, and the top layer is a quilted pillowtop that makes it feel way more luxurious than you’d expect at this price (especially given that it’s on sale). Our reviewers found that the Bear Elite still has enough give to support your hips and elbows while you lay on your side, and is super breathable to boot. Medium firm mattresses are great for back pain support, which can be hard to find for side sleepers, but the Bear Elite can support you while allowing you to stay in your favorite position.
Side sleepers often like soft mattresses, but soft mattresses don’t always have the support they need. The Nectar Premier fixes that with its soft squishy foam and layer of coils for support. The 13-inch mattress is satisfyingly soft to sink into and has excellent contouring to your body, but is still supportive enough for your pressure points. Its softness makes it best for true side sleepers, rather than combination sleepers. It’s a good sale price, too.
The Serta Perfect Sleeper is delivered like mattresses used to, with scheduled delivery and a big truck–no mattress in a box or airing out required. It has a few customization options, but the Ultimate support firmness with a plush pillowtop is a fantastic combination of softness and support. It’s got an assortment of coils that are designed for both side and back sleeping, making it a great find for combination side sleepers.

Saatva Classic Mattress
Photograph: Saatva
The Saatva Classic has a unique spring structure we like and is particularly helpful for dealing with back pain. There’s a layer of pocketed coils made with 14.5-gauge steel, plus a base layer made with heavier 13-gauge steel coils. All those coils make it nice and springy too. The “luxury” firmness level has a pillowtop made from organic cotton quilted in zones to promote lumbar support, plus there’s a high-density foam layer that also gives lumbar and edge support. Saatva’s mattresses don’t come in a box but are delivered by truck and you can have the delivery person place the mattress wherever you want in your home. We often see it for around this price, but this is a solid price to nab it.
The Plank Firm Natural is another great mattress to help deal with back pain. An organic version of the Plank ($999), our favorite firm mattress, it’s dual-sided with both a medium-firm and firm side. With two different layers of latex on each side, plus a center of individually wrapped coils, this springy plank mattress has been a game changer for my back pain. The medium-firm side was comfy but supportive for my scoliosis and spondylosis-wracked spine while I slept on my side. Surprisingly, though, I found myself loving the firm side even more because it turned me into a combination side and back sleeper, alleviating some of the problems I was causing my own body overnight. I haven’t woken up pain-free in years until the Plank Natural, and the firm, springy nature helps me pop right out of bed too.
While the above Plank Natural erases my pain by encouraging me to change my sleeping position, the Saatva Rx lets me sleep all night on my favored right side while erasing the muscle pain I deal with. My sister also tried it after straining her back moving and woke up feeling notably better. It was a little too soft to help with my spine damage (I have spondylosis) but if you have regular muscle aches that usually worsen overnight, this is the mattress for you.
I fell in love with linen bedding years ago. I bought a bright yellow linen duvet I was certain would bring my bedroom together. The yellow was just a phase, but sleeping on linen just clicked. Linen has a rougher texture and a lived-in look, which can turn some folks off from sleeping on it. But the fabric is breathable and dries fast, so you’ll stay cooler as you sleep and avoid sweaty sheets. (That’s why linen apparel is popular in the summer.)
Linen is also strong and durable, softening up (slowly) after each wash without becoming thinner or weaker. Linen tends to be more expensive since high-quality linen will last a long time, so a linen sheet set is an investment not only in staying cool as you sleep (which is very important for sleep quality) but also in gorgeous bedding you can enjoy for years. I love sleeping on linen so long as it isn’t too scratchy, which is one of the many things I looked for while testing and searching for the best linen sheets. After sleeping on multiple sets (along with all kinds of other sheets!), these are the best.

What’s So Great About Linen?
Photograph: Judy Davidson/Getty Images
Linen is a woven fabric made from flax plants. It is a highly breathable material so it keeps you cool during the summer months as it doesn’t trap heat. It’s great for people who sleep hot. It’s rougher at first than a simple cotton set, but it should soften up the more it’s washed. Linen often has a higher price than other sheets, but it’s generally more durable than percale or cotton, so a good sheet set should last a long time.
They’re not for everyone, but if you love linen apparel, you’ll probably love linen sheets. If you’re unsure, start with a single piece (like a duvet or flat sheet) and see what you think. Most of the options we recommend come in a linen set, but you can also buy many of these pieces separately, allowing you to try a linen pillowcase or fitted sheet before wading into a full-on linen bed.
I sleep on a lot of bedding. It comes with the territory when you test bed sheets and comforters for a living. I’ve slept on everything from bamboo and silk to plain-weave cotton, but there’s a term I’ve seen quite often in bedding materials that I didn’t know much about: lyocell. So I had to know. What makes it different from other bedding materials? Is it more comfortable to sleep on? Are the cooling and eco-conscious descriptions I often saw accurate? What’s Tencel, and is it different from lyocell?
Lyocell is a cellulose-based, man-made fiber similar to fabrics like rayon with purported eco-friendly benefits in the manner it’s manufactured. Is it the magic solution to eco-friendly sheets? No. But it’s a move in the right direction, and there’s plenty of opportunity for lyocell to become an even more eco-conscious choice.

Close the Loop
Lyocell has a cellulose structure, similar to both rayon and cotton, so it isn’t a synthetic fabric. But while we harvest cotton from a plant, lyocell and rayon are man-made fibers that take wood pulp and transform it into a fiber and eventually fabric. “The process is called wet spinning,” says Karen Leonas, a professor of textile sciences at the Wilson College of Textiles at North Carolina State University. “It takes wood pulp and makes a slurry, and then makes it into a filament, then into a fiber.”
The process for the two is different enough that rayon and lyocell are labeled by the Federal Trade Commission as separate fibers. One of the biggest differences is output. Making rayon uses different, harsher chemicals that can’t be reused, while lyocell is known for its closed-loop production processes that reuse almost all of the solvent to make more lyocell.
Leonas says lyocell is a better choice than rayon because of the different chemical choices in its manufacture. Namely, she says rayon production uses carbon disulfide, which is toxic to both the environment and the people working on the wet spinning process. Lyocell production does not. “There are solid found technical reasons from the chemical point of view that make it more environmentally friendly and less toxic to workers,” she says.
The words Tencel and lyocell are often used together, or sometimes interchangeably. Where lyocell is the fabric, Tencel is the brand. It’s owned by the Lenzing Group, which makes a specific trademarked Tencel Lyocell fabric. “It’s like cornflakes versus Kellogg’s,” Leonas says. You can find lyocell in all kinds of bedding, from sheets to our favorite mattress.
There’s no such thing as the best mattress for everyone. Not when there are so many different sleeping positions. However, most people are side sleepers. The numbers vary by study and how rigidly you define a side sleeper, but between half and three-quarters of people sleep on their side. (The older and heavier you are, the more likely you are to be a side sleeper, and it’s recommended that pregnant women sleep on their side.)
Firm mattresses are nice for back sleepers, but side and stomach sleepers may typically prefer a softer bed with some give for hips and knees. I am mostly a side sleeper. If you had asked me about my firmness preferences before I started reviewing bed-in-a-box mattresses, testing dozens for weeks over the year, I would’ve told you the softer the better. Indeed, if you’re a side sleeper you’re likely to gravitate toward cushy memory foam mattresses. But, as I’ve sampled more styles and religiously tracked my sleep on my Apple Watch, I’ve found that the best mattresses for side sleepers offer both cushion and support. The recommendations below have enough give to let your hips sink in for a natural spinal alignment without making you feel like rolling over is an uphill battle. Everything I recommend was put through at least a week of real-life testing. All of the prices shown are for queen-size models.
