    According to a report from ESPN’s Dianna Russini, Detroit Lions executive Mike Disner’s recent interview with the Atlanta Falcons involved more than just their opening for team president.

    Russini revealed that the Falcons interviewed Disner along with Bears assistant GM Ian Cunningham, Panthers executive Brandt Tilis, and 49ers director of scouting Josh Williams, and that those meetings also “served as GM interviews.” In other words, Atlanta was evaluating candidates for both its president of football operations and general manager roles at the same time.

    Why This Matters for the Detroit Lions

    Disner has been a major part of Detroit’s front-office rise alongside general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell. His involvement in roster building, organizational structure, and long-term vision has earned league-wide respect, and this report confirms that other franchises view him as more than just an executive; they see him as potential GM material.

    Russini added that Disner was described as “tremendous” and “polished” during the process, further boosting his reputation as one of the NFL’s most impressive young front-office leaders.

    Matt Ryan Hired, But Questions Remain

    The Falcons ultimately hired former NFL MVP Matt Ryan as their new team president, seemingly closing that door for Disner. However, the revelation that Atlanta also evaluated him for its general manager role raises a new question: could Disner still be in the running for a GM job, either with the Falcons or another team in the future?

    Since Atlanta entered the NFL in 1966 — the teams have played 37 times, including four postseason matchups. The Eagles lead the series 21–15–1 going into Monday night — another opportunity for another great chapter to be told.

    In the 1978 NFC Wildcard Round, an up-and-coming Eagles playoff team under Coach Dick Vermeil traveled to Atlanta. After a 13–0 Eagles lead, Atlanta would come back to win the game 14–13 thanks in part to a controversial call where Falcons wide receiver Wallace Francis and Eagles Safety Herm Edwards both went caught the ball at the same time. The ruling went in the Falcons’ favor.

    When Andy Reid’s Eagles were fast becoming contenders in the early 2000s, the Eagles would again meet the Falcons in the post-season. The much-billed matchup between Donovan McNabb and Michael Vick featured McNabb’s first game back from a broken ankle in the 2003 NFC Divisional Playoffs at the Linc. The Eagles would win that game 20–6.

    Two years later — Vick and the Falcons would return to Lincoln Financial Field for the 2005 NFC Championship Game. In a game when the Eagles offense wouldn’t be denied and a genius scheme from Eagles Defensive Coordinator Jim Johnson — flipping defensive ends Javon Kearse and Derrick Burgess and not letting the elusive Michael Vick escape to his left in the 27–10 victory.

    Then, in January of 2018 — in one of the most memorable games in Eagles history — Nick Foles and the Eagles would beat the Falcons 15–10. It was a game that featured an Eagles goal line stand against Julio Jones and Matt Ryan with only seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. It was the first post-season victory in the Eagles’ Super Bowl-winning, magical season of 2017-2018.

    On Monday night, the Eagles will undoubtedly dominate the South Philly skies once again, with the Falcons in their territory.

    Colts bench Ryan for 2nd time, will give Foles starting job

    INDIANAPOLIS — Nick Foles waited all season to start taking snaps with the Indianapolis Colts starters.

    The 33-year-old quarterback is about to get his chance.

    On Wednesday, interim coach Jeff Saturday announced Foles will replace Matt Ryan as Indy’s starter against the Los Angeles Chargers, giving Foles his first start since Dec. 26, 2021, and his second since October 2020.

    “No, none,” Foles said when asked if he’s even taken first-team snaps in practice. “You never know what’s going to happen each week, it’s sort of been that kind of year. Unfortunately, in the NFL there are years like that. For me, it’s always just doing what I need to do in my role.”

    It’s been a painful season for the Colts (4-9-1) and Foles, who initially signed as a free agent to rejoin coach Frank Reich only to watch his longtime friend get fired in early November.

    He’s also seen Indy switch play-callers, fire the offensive coordinator and even got bypassed when Reich initially benched Ryan in October.

    Reich turned the team over to second-year quarterback Sam Ehlinger, who attended the same Texas high school as Foles. Indy lost both of Ehlinger’s starts.

    Foles began this season listed No. 2 on the depth chart, slid to No. 3 and now has been promoted to starter just four days after the Colts blew a 33-0 halftime lead and allowed Minnesota to rally for a 39-36 overtime victory — the largest comeback in NFL history.

    “This is never an easy decision and I love Matt, he’s a pro’s pro and I love the way he’s handled it,” Saturday said. “I feel bad for Matt but ultimately, Nick gives us the best chance of winning and that’s the direction we’re headed.”

    Saturday declined to say whether Ryan or Ehlinger would serve as No. 2 against the Chargers on Monday night.

    Ryan’s roller-coaster season — and perhaps his career — could be over.

    The 37-year-old rallied the Colts in all four of their wins this season, but has been sacked 38 times, fifth in the league, and has a league-high 18 giveaways despite missing two games. Ryan also suffered a separated shoulder in October.

    He’s scheduled to count $35.2 million against Indy’s salary cap next season, but the Colts can free up $17.2 million by releasing the 2016 league MVP and four-time Pro Bowler who ranks fifth in NFL history in completions (5,551) and pass attempts (8,464), seventh in yards passing (62,792) and ninth in touchdown passes (381).

    But after last week’s historic collapse, a four-turnover fourth quarter that led to 33 points in Indy’s previous game at Dallas and four consecutive losses, Saturday pulled the plug on Ryan’s starting role and is giving Foles a crash course to show what he can do with a lineup he knows little about.

    “I know him and got to know him personally, unfortunately not on the field,” said center Ryan Kelly, who will be snapping to his third quarterback this season and eighth since 2017.

    “Just doing the walkthrough stuff. Just keep it simple and go out there and play fast. Nick’s obviously stayed ready, working out literally every day, keeping his body right.”

    But it’s unclear whether the same guy who replaced the injured Carson Wentz as the Eagles starter in Week 15 of the 2017 season and led Philadelphia to the Super Bowl title can replicate that kind of success in Indy. Foles was the Super Bowl MVP that year after throwing for 373 yards and three TDs while catching another memorable score in the game.

    Saturday believes Foles can help stretch the field with more downfield throws and better efficiency and safety Rodney McLeod believes Foles is much the same player he saw in the Eagles locker room in 2017.

    “It’s his confidence, leadership ability, guys have a way of kind of following Nick and I think also he’s a real good quarterback when it comes to deep balls,” McLeod said. “He’s seen a lot of ball and he’s a man of faith and I think you see that kind of calmness he can bring to a huddle.”

    The Colts are hoping that even applies to a quarterback still getting his feet wet with Indy.

    “Sometimes you’re with a team for a couple years and then you go in and out and then you play like this is my first time to really be with the guys,” Foles said. “For me, it’s just getting that mindset of trying to execute this offense, running this offense because really it was training camp and now since then it’s really been scout team cards, but I’ve watched Sam and Matt do a lot of reps.”

    Even Jeff Saturday was shocked when Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay called late Sunday night to offer him the head coaching position.

    A former two-time All-Pro center who snapped the ball to Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning for 12 seasons, Saturday surely knows his X’s and O’s.

    But the TV analyst’s only coaching experience was a three-year stint at Hebron Christian Academy in Georgia, where he led the team to a 20-16 record with three playoff appearances.

    Irsay’s decision stunned people internally and around the league, though his affinity for Saturday was known throughout the organization. Saturday played 13 seasons for the Colts, made the Pro Bowl six times, helped them win a Super Bowl and is a member of the team’s Ring of Honor.

    Critics immediately went after Irsay for hiring an inexperienced former player instead of elevating someone from the coaching staff, which is typical during in-season firings. Colts defensive coordinator Gus Bradley previously served as a head coach in Jacksonville from 2013-16. Senior defensive assistant John Fox spent 16 seasons as head coach in Carolina, Denver and Chicago, and led the Panthers and Broncos to Super Bowl appearances.

    Former NFL quarterback and current ESPN analyst Robert Griffin III called Irsay’s decision “a head-scratching slap in the face to every coach on that staff” in a post on Twitter.

    Saturday’s hiring also didn’t sit well with the Fritz Pollard Alliance, which fights for equity and inclusion in pro . The NFL has seven minority head coaches, including Carolina Panthers interim coach Steve Wilks.

    “The Rooney Rule is the only universal hiring policy used by the NFL to promote fairness and diversity,” The Alliance said in a statement. “However, (Monday’s) news in Indianapolis illuminated a gap in the league’s stated objective. If the spirit of the rule is to expand opportunities, we believe that it must be consistently applied, even in the hiring of interim positions.”

    Irsay and the Colts didn’t have to follow the Rooney Rule requirements for interviewing minority candidates because Saturday replaced Frank Reich during the season. The team will have to fulfill those requirements after the season when seeking a permanent hire.

    “We’re following the Rooney Rule to a ‘T.’ I really look forward to the interview process at the end of the season,” Irsay said.

    This wasn’t the first time Irsay went after Saturday, who is a paid consultant for the team and was working as an analyst at ESPN.

    “Now understand, we’ve tried to hire Jeff a couple times,” Colts general manager Chris Ballard said. “We tried to hire him in 2019 as the offensive line coach and we tried to hire him again this year — just didn’t work out. The timing didn’t work out. I spent a lot of time with Jeff — like I have with a few of the ex-players here, and it doesn’t take long to figure out that he’s got real leadership in him, real special in that regard. For this eight-game stretch and where we’re at, we thought he was going to be a really good fit for us.”

    The Colts (3-5-1) are headed nowhere and Matt Ryan’s benching for inexperienced and overwhelmed quarterback Sam Ehlinger indicates the team has prioritized draft positioning. Reich began each of his five seasons in Indianapolis with a different quarterback, so ensuring a top draft pick to select a potential franchise QB would be a wise strategy.

    That leaves Saturday in a can’t-lose position.

    If he somehow finds a way to lead the Colts to a winning record or even a 4-4 mark over the last eight games, it would be quite an achievement given the state of the team.

    If the Colts lose enough games to end up with one of the top QBs in the draft, Saturday would have helped set the team up for potential future success.

    Irsay made a bold, outside-the-box move that opened him up for scrutiny and criticism. It’s clear he doesn’t care about public perception.

    Matt Ryan, who worked as a food driver and at a cemetery in Yonkers, New York, before getting his chance in the big time, made the shot of his young career on Wednesday. The forward sank a fadeaway last-second 3-pointer to vault the Los Angeles Lakers into overtime against the visiting New Orleans Pelicans. The Lakers went on to win, 120-117, giving them a second straight victory in a 2-5 season.

    “My confidence is, when it comes to shooting, it’s unwavering,” Ryan said, per ESPN. “I mean, I wouldn’t be here if that wasn’t the case.”

    If the Lakers hadn’t blown a 16-point lead, Ryan wouldn’t have had a chance to make his heroic bucket.

    But then again, that Ryan is on an NBA roster at all is somewhat unlikely.

    Ryan got invited to Lakers training camp because of his reputed shooting skills, and stuck with the team on a nonguaranteed contract.

    INDIANAPOLIS — With the Colts‘ offensive woes reaching worrisome proportions, the team decided on a dramatic shift at its most important position.

    Indianapolis is promoting Sam Ehlinger to starting quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders, with veteran Matt Ryan sustaining a Grade 2 shoulder separation against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, coach Frank Reich said. Ryan won’t play or practice this week because of the injury, Reich said, but he emphatically stated that the move is intended to be for the remainder of the season.

    “Extremely difficult decision given the respect and admiration that we have for Matt Ryan, given what he’s brought here,” Reich said Monday. “He is a pro’s pro. This guy is special. We all know at the quarterback position that our poor production on offense is not on one person. It’s not on Matt Ryan. But we also know, as head coach and quarterback, it doesn’t matter. I’m judged on wins and losses. Quarterbacks are judged on points and turnovers. We understand that’s how it is in this league. Matt will be a pro.”

    Ryan, 37, threw two interceptions in the Colts’ 19-10 loss at Tennessee, the first one returned for a touchdown by Andrew Adams. Ryan leads the NFL with nine interceptions through seven games. He also has fumbled 11 times, losing three.

    Meanwhile, the Colts are 29th in scoring, averaging 16.1 points. Sunday’s game was the third contest this season in which the Colts scored 12 points or fewer.

    Ehlinger, 24, was promoted to the No. 2 quarterback over Nick Foles two weeks ago. Now, the 2021 sixth-round pick will make the massive jump to No. 1.

    “I’ve been particularly impressed with Sam in practice since the season started, the look that he’s given on the scout team, the quality of his throws, the way he’s commanding himself out there,” Reich said. “Just the total package. I just think it’s the best decision for our team moving forward.”

    Ehlinger was a preseason sensation for Indianapolis but has played only 18 regular-season snaps in his career. He has never thrown a pass in the regular season. It’s thought that Ehlinger’s mobility might mitigate some of the confounding issues the Colts are experiencing with their offensive line, which continues to be pushed around by opponents, including Tennessee on Sunday. Ryan, a pure pocket passer, sustained 10 quarterback hits in that game.

    “This is a point that needs to be made crystal clear, and I told this to Matt. I said, ‘Matt, we did not hold up our end of the bargain. You came here and we promised you a top NFL rushing game and we promised you great protection. And we haven’t as an offense delivered on that. And that starts with me.’ That was basically my message to Matt,” Reich said.

    “We thought the marriage of Matt Ryan and his history with our running game, he’s had 14 years of incredibly productive quarterback play with great play-action. So, we thought there was going to be a natural marriage there. Given our crazy quarterback scenarios over the last five years, it wasn’t a move of desperation. It was a well-thought-out [decision]. “

    It would appear that Monday’s decision was influenced, at least in part, by owner Jim Irsay. Reich called it a “collective decision” but said he, Irsay and general manager Chris Ballard had an hourlong discussion late Sunday night about the situation.

    “His vote is always going to carry [more weight],” Reich said. “He might lead the way in some certain ways, but it’s really owner, GM and head coach talking through a decision of this magnitude.”

    The Colts acquired Ryan from the Atlanta Falcons in March for a third-round draft pick. Ryan, the 2016 MVP and an Offensive Player of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year winner, spent his first 14 seasons with the Falcons.

    The Colts targeted Ryan after moving on from Carson Wentz after last season. The Colts have had a revolving door at quarterback since Andrew Luck retired before the 2019 season. On Sunday, Ehlinger will become the seventh quarterback to start a game for the Colts since Reich became the team’s coach in 2018.

    The Colts are 3-3-1 this season, including 1-3-1 against AFC South opponents.

    Carson Wentz takes enough hits on and off the field that short rest is just another obstacle.

    Fresh off his coach running him over figuratively, Wentz leads the Washington Commanders (1-4) against the Chicago Bears (2-3) on Thursday night with each team trying to snap a losing streak.

    Commanders coach Ron Rivera caused quite a stir this week when he blamed the team’s four-game skid and last-place standing in the NFC East on his quarterback. Rivera later explained his response was misconstrued but the damage was done.

    For Wentz, it’s just another shot. He’s been taking plenty of them since his days in Philadelphia when nothing seemed to go right after he helped the Eagles start 13-3 in 2017, tore two knee ligaments and watched backup Nick Foles become a Super Bowl MVP.

    “I learned very early on you gotta just find a way to get out there Thursday,” Wentz said. “Your recovery is definitely expedited. … It’s very tough, very challenging, but it’s also prime time and guys get fired up to go play and hopefully put on a put on a good performance.”

    The Bears have lost two in a row after a 2-1 start. Second-year quarterback Justin Fields is the league’s third-lowest rated passer and has only 17.6 attempts per game.

    Chicago is a 1-point favorite, according to FanDuel. In a week with seven road favorites, Pro Picks likes the slight underdog Commanders to rally around Wentz.

    Unbeaten Dolphins kick off Week 4 as underdogs vs Bengals

    Tua Tagovailoa and the unbeaten Miami Dolphins are underdogs in Week 4.

    The Dolphins (3-0) kick off this week’s schedule against Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals (1-2) on “Thursday Night Football.”

    The Bengals are 3 1/2-point favorites, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

    If a victory over the Buffalo Bills wasn’t convincing enough, perhaps a win over the defending AFC champion Bengals would prove the Dolphins are legitimate contenders.

    “There are still some doubters, but we don’t really pay attention too much,” Dolphins running back Raheem Mostert said. “We just go out here and do what we got to do at the end of the day. Whether if it’s against a tough opponent or a not-so tough opponent, each week is a different challenge and each week is a different opportunity for us to grow.”

    Tagovailoa is trying to play with an injured back on short rest. Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said Tagovailoa would be questionable in a typical week. Miami has a capable backup in Teddy Bridgewater if needed.

    Tagovailoa’s uncertainty makes this one easier to predict.

    BENGALS 26-20

    Denver (plus 2 1/2) at Las Vegas

    The Raiders are too talented to be stay winless after winning 10 games last season. Russell Wilson still hasn’t found a rhythm in Denver’s offense and rookie coach Nathaniel Hackett has made several head-scratching decisions. It’s an opportunity for Raiders coach Josh McDaniels to get his first win since Nov. 14, 2010, when he coached the Broncos.

    BEST BET: RAIDERS 24-19

    Arizona (plus 2) at Carolina

    The Cardinals have struggled in the first half and need to start games the way they finish them. They’ve won nine straight road games in the regular season. Kyler Murray should outduel Baker Mayfield in the battle between former Oklahoma quarterbacks.

    UPSET SPECIAL: CARDINALS 26-20

    Los Angeles Chargers (minus 5 1/2) at Houston

    Justin Herbert is playing hurt, the Chargers are banged-up and they were blown out by the Jaguars last week. The winless Texans have been outscored a combined 30-0 in the fourth quarter this season.

    Jacoby Brissett is proving he’s more than a game-manager for the Browns, who rely on Nick Chubb and an excellent ground game.

    Cooper Rush is 2-0 filling in for Dak Prescott this season. Carson Wentz tries to bounce back from a beatdown against the Eagles to face another familiar opponent.
