The 2020 racial reckonings heightened awareness across many industries, especially fashion, ushering in a new era where BIPOC designers were supported and given the voice they deserve. This push paved the way for more Black-owned brands to emerge on the scene, and one newcomer has managed to set themselves apart from the rest — Maya Winston. In just one year of business, the Jamaican-born designer, now based in New York City, has created a luxury accessory label that’s known for its viral handbags uniquely crafted in the Asia Pacific and the Middle East, including their small leather tote, most popularly worn by Angela Simmons, Tia Mowry, and Remy Ma.

“It’s just those Jamaican roots; we can make anything fashionable.”

Winston has since catapulted into the luxury bag market with a brand identity that’s just as rich as the quality of his pieces. At 11, he migrated with his family to the US, where he learned firsthand how to sew from his mother, a sought-after seamstress, establishing the foundation of the Maya Winston brand. “Growing up in Jamaica, my mom was always making everyone’s clothes, and as far as I could think back, I’ve always been surrounded by sewing machines, where I would often stitch my uniform whenever I messed it up,” Winston tells POPSUGAR. “It’s just those Jamaican roots; we can make anything fashionable. Take nothing and make it into something.”

With over a decade spent cultivating his love for design (even starting the men’s streetwear line Terry Winston in 2013, once worn by Teyana Taylor), the Bronx native transitioned to creating accessories for the elevated and confident woman, regardless of demographic. His highly-coveted bags have also captured the attention of major companies like Samsung, which resulted in an exclusive collaboration during New York Fashion Week that included a fireside chat with Winston and a billboard in Times Square. “I always told myself, I’m going to have a billboard one day. But I never stopped to think about what it would look like or its message,” he says. “It was surreal, and Samsung was the perfect company to get consumers to know the face behind the name; it just made sense.”

Ahead, Winston opens up about the future of his brand, cultural identity, the impact of racial inclusivity, and more. Keep reading for the full interview and shop his signature pieces.

  • The Quiet-Luxury Trend Everyone Is Wearing This Year

The Quiet-Luxury Trend Everyone Is Wearing This Year

    [ad_1]

While the definition of quiet luxury is derived from an aesthetic that’s seemingly been around for ages — minimalist, understated clothing made from high quality materials — the term has exploded over the past year by 614 percent, according to boohoo.com‘s Google Trends data analysis. That’s largely thanks to the celebrities who are tapping into the look, whereas they might have previously turned to maximalism. Someone like Kylie Jenner, for example, maintained a wardrobe that boasted flashy designer logos, even passing many of her most notable items onto daughter Stormi, who is a mini fashion icon in her own right. But lately, Jenner, who works with stylists Mackenzie and Alexandra Rose Grandquist, has taken a turn toward clean, streamlined neutrals, exhibiting her take on quiet luxury during a trip to Paris.

Curious fans and all-knowing TikTok users attributed the shift to Sofia Richie’s influence. The 24-year-old hosted her April wedding in the South of France, wearing three custom Chanel bridal dresses, along with a whole slew of sleek and refined weekend outfits from the likes of Proenza Schouler and Khaite, all curated by Liat Baruch. She sported a timeless, low bun and natural-looking makeup, posting the process through Get Ready With Me videos that went viral.

Just a few weeks later, actress Jennifer Lawrence began debuting her own quiet luxury pieces while doing press at Cannes and in New York City for “No Hard Feelings.” Sporting everything from a sheer Dior sheath and a structural nude Loewe midi to a crisp Alaïa shirtdress and tuxedo suiting, the 32-year-old Oscar-winner has officially cemented her status as a quiet luxury contender, with the help of Jamie Mizrahi.

Now, Kendall Jenner is following suit with her own stint in Paris, on the scene to walk Jacquemus’s “Le Chouchou” runway. Working with stylist Dani Michelle, Jenner packed essentials from Bottega Veneta, counting a gray midi dress with a keyhole cutout and sequined plunging halter as her own quiet luxury offerings. To no surprise, she accessorized with loafers from The Row and dark sunglasses — another necessary staple.

But why have logo-less, elegant ensembles like these suddenly become so popular, even though they’ve always existed for the person who values well-made basics? Many think it’s all part of the post-pandemic fashion cycle, as we leave our quirky, eye-catching, personality-defining tchotchkes in the dust. But there’s also no denying that Richie, Lawrence, and the Jenners being on board is a hard selling point.

Ahead, see the best quiet luxury celebrity fashion moments we’ve been graced with so far.

  • I Attempted to Wear Olivia Rodrigo’s Infamously Tall, 7-Inch Platform Boots

I Attempted to Wear Olivia Rodrigo’s Infamously Tall, 7-Inch Platform Boots

Dua Lipa, Olvia Rodrigo, and Lady Gaga all posed in the Marc Jacobs Kiki platform boots, and upon first glance, my reaction was always the same: I wonder what it’s like to actually walk in those 7-inch heels? Well, reader, I tried the vertiginous heels on myself and at the most non-opportune time, too. I had just completed a 16-mile run before stepping into these monstrous shoes, which might have been foolish, but I had no other choice since I’m in the midst of training for a marathon. Nevertheless, I’m always up for a challenge, and I’d like to think strapping into these puppies with a giant blister on my big toe qualifies as such.

It is a costume shoe built for a celebrity — one who is spotted by body guards or assistants, and employs a driver to transport them from door to door.

To be candid, wearing this version of the infamous Kiki, which first debuted on the runway in 2016 and boasts a 4-inch platform (you do the math), is not easy. Though they’re equipped with five buckle straps, the thin strips of leather across the upper and around the ankle are no match for the 5-pound blocks they’re dragging along. The Kiki style is so tall (the tallest in Marc Jacobs platform history), that once you’re standing in them, the inevitable realization hits you: if you were to fall, you’d twist and probably break your ankle. Upon recognizing that fact, I immediately reached for support from the wall beside me — and also the ceiling. Because my tiny attic apartment would have it that, in the Kiki, I was a giant whose head skimmed the roof.

Ahead, see how I styled this viral, celebrity-favorite shoe, despite my fear of tripping and squashing one of my cats. Then, keep scrolling to shop it for yourself.

  • Introducing Post Malone x Harley-Davidson

    Introducing Post Malone x Harley-Davidson

    [ad_1]

A while ago, I wrote about how Harley Davidson was taking the plunge into the luxury fashion world. That may have sounded a bit unorthodox or a shot in the dark but actually wasn’t a far cry from their reality. You see, those beloved trucker hats and Harley tees were taken into the magical hands of Louise Goldin and transformed into the epitome of high fashion.

    Now,
H-D Collections is teaming up with rockstar Post Malone for a new collection that is true to both Posty and Harley’s roots. The entire collection is simple – with a black, white, and silver colorway that feels like the perfect mix of the two’s personalities. For Harley Davidson, you want to pay homage to the metals that are reminiscent of their motorcycles. For Post Malone, whose color scheme normally revolves around blacks and whites, it just makes sense.

With a bit of a Western flare thrown in, this collab is all fun. Themes of “horse power” are prevalent with emblazoned leather gloves, and a badass horse-studded denim vest and pants set. Then there are the fun sweatshirts and tees sporting “Chrome Malone”, or just the Harley Logo with a silvery flamed flare.

Post Malone x Harley Davison is H-D Collections’ way of establishing themselves as true forces in the luxury fashion world. They’re no longer on a trial run, and they’ve got Post Malone to prove it. It’s an exciting start to innovating the fashion world – one leather glove at a time.

With items as low as $25, this collection is both affordable and fashion-forward. It’s a way to elevate any outfit just through a simple t-shirt.

    A separate t-shirt exclusive to
Post Malone’s website is being sold alongside his new album, AUSTIN – out the same day as the collection! No matter how you look at it, this collaboration is a win for both Post Malone and Harley-Davidson. It stays true to their classic styles, melding rocker-moto style into one cohesive line.
