  • Suspected dating app burglar also accused of stealing from businesses

    [ad_1]

As authorities look for the woman accused of burglarizing the homes of men whom she met on dating apps, the suspected burglar is now facing more theft accusations from small businesses in Southern California.

A skincare spa and clothing store in Los Angeles became a victim as the owners accused Adva Lavie of stealing from them, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told NBC Los Angeles exclusively.

Another business in Riverside County has also claimed it lost money from Lavie, the sheriff’s department added.

The losses are estimated to be tens of thousands of dollars.

As investigators look for more victims whose homes were burglarized after meeting Lavie, authorities are also asking businesses to come forward if they were affected by Lavie’s actions.

Last week, a Las Vegas-based podcast host told NBCLA that Lavie stole from several women when they were invited to be guests on his show earlier this year.

Michael Sartain, who hosts “Access Vegas Live,” claimed, while being a guest on his show, Lavie slipped into the backstage and took valuables out of other guests’ bags.

“At the 45-minute market, she gets up and goes to the green room, where all the girls had left their purses,” he said. “She proceeds for probably the next 23 minutes, rummaging through all their purses. She gets cash, credit cards, then she comes back to the show.”

The sheriff’s department has said the 29-year-old woman would meet older men on dating sites or apps to build trust before burglarizing their homes. Investigators believe there are at least 10 victims.

Lavie’s whereabouts were still unknown as of Thursday as investigators looked for additional victims.

Investigators believe Lavie is linked to at least two vehicles – a black Porsche SUV and white Mercedes-Benz sedan.

The woman was described to be 5’07”, 104 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information regarding Lavie was encouraged to contact Lost Hills Station Detective Lopez at 818-878-1808 or LAPD Detective Marsh at 818-374-9500.

  • Vehicle break-ins and identity theft in Thousand Oaks lead to arrest

    [ad_1]

A 36-year-old Oxnard man is facing multiple felony charges in connection with a string of vehicle thefts and identity thefts in Thousand Oaks, following a months-long investigation by Ventura County authorities.

According to a news release from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, detectives with the East County Investigations Bureau’s Property Crimes Unit began investigating in July after a series of thefts from unlocked vehicles were reported in Thousand Oaks.

The suspects allegedly stole cash, credit cards, personal information, and other property, later using the stolen credit cards at businesses in Ventura County.

Investigators identified a vehicle believed to be involved and eventually linked Fernando Salinas of Oxnard to the crimes. Salinas was arrested on Sept. 18 by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on unrelated residential burglary charges.

The following day, Ventura County detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Salinas related to the Thousand Oaks thefts. The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office has since filed charges of identity theft, grand theft, conspiracy to commit a crime, and petty theft with prior convictions, according to the sheriff’s office.

Salinas remains in custody in Los Angeles County and will be extradited to Ventura County once he is released, officials said. Detectives are continuing to investigate and are working to identify additional suspects in the case.

The sheriff’s office urged residents to remain vigilant by locking their vehicles and removing valuables, noting that while Thousand Oaks is considered a safe community, criminals can take advantage of a false sense of security.

At least a dozen teenagers were detained Saturday after the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call of a large disturbance outside the SouthBay Pavilion Mall in Carson.

LASD said several deputies responded to the shopping plaza at about 5:20 p.m. Law enforcement received reports of a large group of minors lighting a trash can on fire in the area.

Video from NewsChopper 4 showed about 20 police cruisers at the scene, with several officers looking over about 30 teenagers. It is unclear if any of those teens may face charges or if they were released to their parents.

  • Lancaster mother killed by LASD deputy after calling 911 is laid to rest

Lancaster mother killed by LASD deputy after calling 911 is laid to rest

    [ad_1]

LANCASTER, Calif. (KABC) — The mother killed by a Los Angeles sheriff’s deputy in Lancaster back in December after she called for help in a domestic dispute has been laid to rest.

Niani Finlayson’s family gathered for her service in Anaheim on Sunday.

The 27-year-old was shot in front of her 9-year-old daughter on December 4 after deputies responded to a domestic violence call at an apartment in Lancaster.

The L.A. County Sheriff’s Department claims she was threatening her ex-boyfriend with a knife. The department later released video of the shooting.

In a 911 audio clip released by the sheriff’s department, Finlayson is heard telling the dispatcher that the man “won’t get of my house” and “he will not leave me alone.”

“I need the police here right now. No, cause he won’t get his hands off of me,” Finlayson says, as she apparently argues with a man in the background.

The L.A. County District Attorney’s Office is conducting its own independent review of the shooting.

Finlayson’s family says the shooting was unjustified and has begun the process of suing the department and county for $30 million.

  • LA officials: Suspect in homeless murders is in custody

LA officials: Suspect in homeless murders is in custody

    [ad_1]

LOS ANGELES – At a press conference on Saturday afternoon, Mayor Karen Bass and LAPD Chief Michel Moore along with Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón and LA County Sheriff Robert Luna announced the arrest of the suspect in the murders of three homeless individuals across the city.

LAPD Chief Moore identified the suspect as Jerrid Joseph Powell, 33, of Los Angeles. Powell is alleged to be the gunman behind the murders of homeless men across Los Angeles from Nov. 26 to Nov. 29.

After a multiple agency cooperative investigation triggered by the follow-home murder of Nicholas Simbolon of San Dimas on Tuesday night by LASD homicide investigators, a car and weapon in that case was identified by the Beverly Hills Police Department.

Simbolon was a tenured L.A. County employee, who worked for the chief executive officer as a project manager in the IT department.

“He was key in developing applications, software that helped to propel the office forward, and also helped us to meet our mission to deliver services to citizens and residents of L.A. County,” Sheriff Robert Luna said at Thursday’s press conference.

On Thursday morning, the suspect, Powell, was spotted in Beverly Hills driving the same vehicle and taken into custody.

“When you get to a scene, you just start playing it backwards,” Sheriff Luna said while announcing the arrest [Thursday]. “They start looking at every avenue.”

During the arrest, deputies recovered a gun that appeared to match the description of the weapon used to commit the crime, authorities added.

“Over the course of the investigation of our murders, we were able to identify the vehicle we believe is connected to our three homicides as being the same vehicle that Mr. Powell used in the murder of Mr. Simbolon,” Moore said at Saturday’s press conference. “[We learned] that it was being held in custody of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department as evidence of their murder.”

According to Chief Moore, that vehicle was the same being sought in the killings of the three homeless persons and the gun seized was the weapon used in the killings.

  • FOUR LA Sheriff’s Department Officers Dead By Suicide Within 24 Hours: REPORT – Perez Hilton

FOUR LA Sheriff’s Department Officers Dead By Suicide Within 24 Hours: REPORT – Perez Hilton

    [ad_1]

    [Warning: Potentially Triggering Content]

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is reeling after the deaths of four “beloved” active and retired officers.

In an email statement to KTLA on Tuesday, LA County Sheriff Robert Luna addressed a jaw-dropping report that has shocked the community: within 24 hours, four officers died, all said to be by suicide. Luna did not confirm the manners of death, but multiple anonymous sources suggested to the LA Times that suicide was the consistent factor among the four fallen men.

The first was discovered on Monday at around 10:30 a.m. in Valencia, and just two hours later another was found in Lancaster. Later that same evening at 5:40 p.m., LASD detectives discovered a third deputy in Stevenson Ranch, while the fourth was found on Tuesday at around 7:30 a.m. in Pomona. The outlet reported one of the victims was 25-year vet Commander Darren Harris, who was allegedly discovered with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, while another was Sergeant Greg Hovland.

How utterly confounding. FOUR deaths by suicide in just 24 hours?? We know these types of self-harm incidents tend to cluster in families, but in a single day??

    Luna wrote in his statement:

“We are stunned to learn of these deaths, and it has sent shockwaves of emotions throughout the department as we try and cope with the loss of not just one, but four beloved active and retired members of our department family. During trying times like these it’s important for personnel regardless of rank or position to check on the well-being of other colleagues and friends. I have the deepest concern for our employees’ well-being, and we are urgently exploring avenues to reduce work stress factors to support our employees’ work and personal lives.”

The deaths are being investigated by homicide detectives and the County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner. As of now, authorities — believe it or not — do NOT believe they’re related! However, retired Santa Monica police officer Cristina Coria alluded to what sounds like a mental health crisis within the force that isn’t being addressed. She told Fox 11 on Wednesday:

“There are so many officers that I know that have talked about committing suicide that I never thought in a million years would think about it or talk about it. There are so many officers out there that are struggling with their identity, with finances, with relationship problems, with addictions to pain meds, addiction to alcohol, you name it. There are so many things going on, that our departments are not reaching out to them [struggling officers] enough.”

Wow. The LASD added that its Psychological Services Bureau and the Injury and Health Support Unit are providing support to the families of the victims. We hope everyone gets some answers soon.

    Wednesday, May 17, 2023 7:01AM

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (KABC) — A smash-and-grab robbery at a marijuana dispensary in West Hollywood happened early Tuesday morning.

The store’s manager said about 12 people broke in to Urbn Leaf on Sunset Boulevard around 5 a.m.

The owners say one of the burglars smashed through the windows, and then the rest followed, taking most of the product on the store floor.

“I was pretty shocked. I’m like ‘really?’ I can’t believe this actually happened on Sunset,” said Sol Yamani, a partner at the store.

The latest crime came just hours after the city of West Hollywood voted to add four new positions to the Sheriff’s Department to patrol the area.

Less than two weeks ago, four people were arrested in connection with a brazen armed robbery close to a nearby restaurant.
