On Thursday, November 7, Clarín, an Argentine news outlet, published an update about the investigation into the singer’s death. Furthermore, the outlet reported that The National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office of Buenos Aires executed a search on “multiple locations.” This reportedly included the hotel where Payne was found deceased and “other properties located in Retiro, Tigre and Lomas de Zamora.”
Additionally, the outlet shared that police “are now seeing an Argentine friend” of Payne. Payne’s phone was reportedly searched after his death, and police determined the singer’s friend may be the “possible” supplier of the “substances [Payne] ingested before his death.”
Lastly, the outlet notes that two employees of Hotel Casa Sur de Palermo are also being investigated by police. Furthermore, Clarín notes that the homes of each employee have been raided. One of the two employees was reportedly “fired shortly after the incident.”
To note, ABC News reports that all three individuals have been detained by authorities. E! News has reportedly reached out to Buenos Aires authorities for comment.

As The Shade Room previously reported, Payne was discovered deceased on October 16. At the time, authorities speculated he had fallen from the balcony of his third-floor hotel room. Additionally, authorities were uncertain if Payne’s fall was intentional or accidental.
A preliminary autopsy report determined Payne passed away from multiple injuries. This reportedly included internal and external hemorrhaging, per The Shade Room. Additionally, Clarín notes that Payne was found with “pink cocaine” in his body, along with “cocaine, benzodiazepines, and crack.”

According to Clarín, Payne’s body was repatriated to England on Wednesday, November 6. The singer’s father reportedly accompanied the body of his son on a British Airways flight. Furthermore, the outlet reports that the flight landed in London on Thursday morning.
Additionally, the outlet asserts that a date has not been confirmed for Payne’s funeral. However, it is expected to be a private event for “his closest circle to attend so that they can say goodbye for good.”

“They were sort of assigned to be together. And you don’t expect longevity out of that situation. Honestly, you don’t even expect one good pop record to come out of that situation,” he says. And yet, not only did it work, but One Direction essentially created “a new template for pop stardom, really.”
The show allowed Day 1 fans to follow their career before their official 2011 launch with “What Makes You Beautiful.” Nascent fans could use rising social media platforms like Twitter and Tumblr to find community, draw attention to the group and, in the earliest days, speak directly to the members.
“I honestly made a Twitter so that I could keep up with One Direction, and that’s how I made so many different friends,” says Gabrielle Kopera, 28, a fan from California who remembers the band hosting livestreams and chats. “Sometimes they would say something back and it was so much fun. That feeling of accessibility reinforced the group’s personality and relationship with fans, says Maura Johnston, a freelance music writer and Boston College adjunct instructor.
“The fact that they came up on this British TV show and they became this worldwide phenomenon, I don’t think that would have happened as acutely and as quickly and as immersive without social media, without Twitter or without people being able to mobilize around the globe,” she says.
One Direction and their fans
Millennial and Gen Z audiences practically grew up with One Direction, but the band was truly ubiquitous. That, Johnston says, is at least partially attributable to arriving in a very different media environment from today’s.
“It was a lot more focused,” she says of the early 2010s. “Algorithmic sorting of stuff hadn’t really taken hold. So, there was this broader, mass approach. … They were one of the last gasps of that mass phenomenon, that anyone of any age, even if they weren’t a fan, had to take notice to.”
But it takes more than omnipresence to cultivate a loyal fanbase. And there were myriad reasons why listeners were attracted to One Direction.
“They were five very different musical personalities, along with five very different personalities,” says Sheffield.

They broke the rules associated with traditional boy bands, too: “They co-wrote many of their songs. They didn’t do, you know, corny, choreographed steps on stage,” he said.
After the news of Payne’s death, Kopera says she “got so many messages from people I haven’t talked to in years reaching out because I think everyone kind of realized that it does feel like we just lost a family member.”
That sentiment was mirrored in the masses of fans who gathered Wednesday outside Buenos Aires’ Casa Sur Hotel, feeding a burgeoning makeshift memorial of flowers, candles and notes as police stood guard.
“I’ve always loved One Direction since I was little,” said Juana Relh, 18, outside Payne’s hotel. “To see that he died and that there will never be another reunion of the boys is unbelievable, it kills me.”
Liam Payne’s place in the band, and its legacy
Payne was a “brooding” older brother-type in One Direction, says Johnston. He also co-wrote many songs, especially in their later career — like the Fleetwood Mac-channeling “What A Feeling” and “Fireproof.”
“He was this grounding force in the band,” Johnston says.
In an Instagram tribute, Tomlinson called Payne “the most vital part of One Direction.”
“His experience from a young age, his perfect pitch, his stage presence, his gift for writing. The list goes on. Thank you for shaping us Liam,” he wrote.
“I always remember that he was the responsible and the sensible one of the group, and I feel like he wore his heart on his sleeve,” Kopera says.
Payne had recently been vocal about struggling with alcoholism, posting a YouTube video in July 2023 where he said he had been sober for six months after receiving treatment. Buenos Aires police said they found clonazepam — a central nervous system depressant — and other over-the-counter drugs in Payne’s hotel room, along with a whiskey bottle in the courtyard where he was found.

“Looking at what happened to Liam, it just makes you feel even more sad, that it just feels like he needed help,” Kopera says. “And it’s so scary to think about how the entertainment industry can just, like, eat up artists.”
After One Direction disbanded in 2016, Payne’s solo career — a single R&B-pop album in 2019, “LP1,” and a number of singles here and there — never took off the same way as some of his bandmates. He was “the least successful,” Sheffield says. “It’s safe to say that on the terms that he was going for, he didn’t really find what he wanted to do.”
“It’s hard, transitioning from being a boy bander to be a pop star,” Johnston says.
At Payne’s solo shows, Sheffield explains, “He would show a little montage of One Direction performing, which is the kind of thing you don’t do when you’re starting out as a solo artist. But fans took that in the spirit it was offered, which is a very generous statement that he’s like, ‘Yep, you’re here because of this history that we share, and I’m here because of that same history.’”
Despite Payne’s struggles and the tragedy of his death, Kopera is confident “his legacy is going to always point back to One Direction.”
For fans, the same is true.
“When I look back on One Direction, I’m like, that was my girlhood. One Direction was the soundtrack to growing up, and I’m so thankful for it,” she says. “They really were just a group of normal boys.”

After the release of One Direction’s joint statement, the bandmates slowly shared individual tributes to Payne on their social media accounts.

On Thursday, October 17, authorities in Argentina released preliminary details about Payne’s passing, per The Shade Room. According to AP News, Pablo Policicchio, the communications director for the Buenos Aires Security Ministry, stated that Payne allegedly “jumped” from his balcony. However, a subsequent report published by US Weekly asserts that authorities have yet to determine whether his death was intentional or accidental.
Furthermore, the singer’s preliminary autopsy reportedly asserted he passed away from “internal and external hemorrhage.”

A statement from police read: “At 17.04 through the 911 integrated public safety system, we were alerted of a person who was in an internal courtyard of the management of a south house hotel.

TMZ broke the story of Payne’s passing. He was staying at CasaSur in Palermo when he fell from the third story. Instead of writing the news like that, TMZ decided to include a picture from the scene that had Payne’s visible body in it. I do not know how much you can see, I am not clicking on the article. I found this information out from seeing others posting online about it. Reportedly, you can see Payne’s arm.

Others pointed out how everyone who works for that site should be ashamed of this.

He was still so young and it is a shock in general but, for so many, he was one of their favorite performers when they were younger. Payne was in Buenos Aires at the time of his death, at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel. He is reported to have fallen from his room, on the 3rd floor. There’s no indication yet whether his death was intentional or accidental. Payne had been in Argentina for a Niall Horan concert, with his One Direction bandmates reuniting at the show.
Witnesses reported Payne was acting erratic at the hotel lobby earlier in the day, with the singer smashing his laptop and needing help to get back to his room. Paramedics in Argentina confirmed to local news stations that when they arrived at the scene Payne was already dead.
Payne was 16 when he, alongside Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik made up One Direction. The band was created during the show The X Factor in 2010. One Direction broke up in 2015.
In June 2021 Payne admitted that he struggled with both alcohol and prescription drug addictions during his time in the band. Earlier this week Payne’s ex-fiancée, Maya Henry, claimed Payne left her after asking her to get an abortion.

Is that normal behaviour to you?” she asked.

He was harassing me for videos and photos, and I was sending them.” She also noted that this occurred while Payne was in relationships with other women.

Liam Payne is opening up about his sobriety journey as he reaches a new milestone.
The One Direction alum posted a video to his YouTube page on Saturday and shared that he is now 6 months sober after spending 100 days in a rehabilitation facility.
“I just needed to take a little bit of time out for myself actually because I kind of became somebody who I didn’t really recognize anymore,” Payne said in his video, adding “And I’m sure you guys didn’t either.”
He continued, “I was in bad shape up until that point and I was really happy more than anything after I arrived to kind of put a stopper to life and work.” Payne acknowledged that one of the scariest aspects of his experience was reconnecting with the “outside world” and turning his phone back on when he left.
“Ever since then, I’ve just been trying to learn to get to know this new guy,” he said.
In the video, Payne also apologized for comments he made in a 2022 episode of Logan Paul’s “Impaulsive” podcast.
“A lot of what I said just came from the wrong place,” he said.
During his appearance on the podcast, Payne commented on his complicated relationship with Zayn Malik, who had left One Direction in 2015 to pursue a solo career, saying, “There’s many reasons why I dislike Zayn and there’s many reasons why I’ll always, always be on his side.”
Payne added that his former One Direction bandmates – Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Malik and Louis Tomlinson – have all stood by him.
He thanked his former partner Cheryl Cole, with whom he shares a 6-year-old son named Bear, for giving him the “freedom” and support to get well.
Part of his motivation in getting help was to be a better dad to Bear, Payne said.
“There’s no point in being a dad when you’ve got nothing to teach,” he posited.
And while Payne proclaimed that as far as drinking goes, “the party’s over,” he has another reason to celebrate. The singer confirmed he’s heading back on the road, and begins a South American tour in September.
“I just kind of feel like I’ve got more of a grip on life now,” Payne said.
