  • Joe Louis Southern Kitchen celebrates opening of Southfield location – Detroit Metro Times

    Joe Louis Southern Kitchen celebrated a grand opening for its second location, with a third set for early next year.

    The boxing-themed brunch spot, named after the great Joe Louis and led by his son Joe Louis Barrow II, opened its doors in November at 29649 Northwestern Hwy., Southfield. It held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, Dec. 9.

    “My father’s legacy is so strong throughout Detroit and the surrounding communities, we’re excited to feature commemorative items for purchase at our checkout counter — offering people the chance to take home a piece of that legacy after sharing a delicious meal together,” Barrow said. “Patrons who come to our new restaurant in Southfield will truly experience the spirit of Joe Louis while they’re here and it’s inspiring to be the one sharing that with the world.”

    The menu features scrambles, skillets, omelets, sandwiches, and other breakfast-style options. 

    The 5,300-square-foot space seats about 99 diners and staffs 35, the company says.

    The new location even has a gift shop offering Joe Louis merch, a first for the brand.

    “It’s been wonderful to see firsthand how our restaurants resonate with guests,” said Johnny Cannon, co-CEO of Joe Louis Southern Kitchen along with Barrow. “Our original location in Detroit has grown to be a staple of the community and we know those in Southfield will enjoy our unique dining experience centered around family, friends, comfort and connection.”

    The chain opened its first location at 6549 Woodward Ave. in the North End area in 2021. A third Joe Louis Southern Kitchen is planned for downtown Detroit and expected to open in April.

  • Detroit’s legendary Kronk Gym reopens in historic Brewster Wheeler Recreation Center – Detroit Metro Times

    Kronk Gym is back. 

    The legendary home of the late Emanuel Steward, who trained a number of World Champions and Olympic medalists, has officially reopened in the historic Brewster Wheeler Recreation Center at 670 Wilkins St.

    The gym is now open for new members and has even introduced new Kronk-branded merch.

    The original Kronk Gym operated at the city-owned Kronk Recreation Center at 5555 McGraw Ave., where Steward became head coach in 1971 and trained champs like Thomas Hearns, Hilmer Kenty, Lennox Lewis, Gerald McClellan, and Wladimir Klitschko. The building closed in 2006 due to city cuts, however, and was later destroyed in a fire.

    Kronk reopened on Warren Avenue but closed when Steward died in 2012. In 2015, Steward’s wife Marie opened another location at 9520 Mettetal St. but it too closed in 2020 due to flooding.

    The new version of Kronk is under new ownership, though Marie Steward and daughter Sylvia Steward-Williams remain involved, in addition to boxing greats like Hilmer Kenty, Kronk’s first World Champion. Mary Jo Sanders, a 2025 International Boxing Hall of Famer and Kronk alum, is also one of Kronk’s trainers.

    “Kronk shaped boxing around the world, and my father dedicated his life to Detroit,” Steward-Williams said in a statement. “We are proud to see this legacy enter a new era with this amazing team leading the way.”

    The Brewster Wheeler Recreation Center holds special significance to boxing, too. Not only was it where Steward trained, but it was home to other boxing greats including Sugar Ray Robinson, Eddie Futch, and the mighty Joe Louis.

    The 3,500-square-foot building will offer community mentorship, youth programming, and other training opportunities for all skill levels.

  • Detroit’s Joe Louis Southern Kitchen to open downtown location – Detroit Metro Times

    Joe Louis Southern Kitchen is planning on bringing its chicken and waffles and other Southern-style brunch dishes to downtown Detroit.

    The local chain is named after the Detroit boxing champion and led by his son Joe Louis Barrow II and local restaurateur Johnny Cannon.

    “Detroit helped shape my father. Preserving his name and keeping his legacy alive in the city he loved means the world to me and my family,” Barrow said in a statement. “As we prepare to open our third location, we are continuing to give something meaningful back to the city — inviting visitors, residents and sports fans to experience the values of excellence and community my father stood for.”

    The restaurant aims to open its third location at 1528 Woodward Ave., in a property owned by Dan Gilbert’s Bedrock by April 3, 2026  — just in time for Detroit Tigers Opening Day.

    “Detroit is experiencing incredible momentum and bringing our homestyle cooking to this iconic Woodward spot feels like a natural progression for our homegrown brand,” said Cannon. “Partnering with a transformative placemaker like Bedrock for our new space enables us to share Joe Louis’ legacy with an even broader audience right in the heart of downtown, adding an element of history and flavor to the city’s entertainment, sports and shopping districts.”

    The original Joe Louis Southern Kitchen opened in 2021 at 6549 Woodward Ave. in Detroit’s New Center area. It recently opened a second location at 29649 Northwestern Hwy. in Southfield.

    The new restaurant will be about 4,000 square feet and seat more than 80 diners.
