Janette Manrara felt like she “didn’t belong” on Strictly: “You have to hide the fact you’re struggling”

Strictly Come Dancing pro Janette Manrara has admitted she felt like “didn’t belong” on the show after secretly battling fears she was an “imposter”.

The pro dancer, 40, who tied the knot to fellow professional Aljaž Škorjanec, 34, in 2017, joined Strictly in 2013 but behind the glitz and glamour that year, she was dealing with imposter syndrome.

It comes as she opens up about her life experiences in her newly-released book Tiny Dancer Big World, which has been described as a “self-help manual of sorts that draws from her own life experiences”.

Janette on her Strictly debut being nothing short of difficult

It Takes Two host Janette told OK!: “My first year on Strictly was very, very tough, not because of the show itself, it was just me, personally. I had imposter syndrome, I felt like I didn’t belong there. I’d just moved to a new country, I was in the dance-off every week, all those feelings of not being enough, doubting myself, feeling like an imposter in a new country, new job, new space, they were eating me up alive, you know?

“And when Aljaž went off to do the live tour that year and I didn’t, I felt very lonely. So that was really tough to navigate. You get thrown into Strictly and you don’t know how big of a machine it is until you’re in it. And you have to hide the fact that you’re struggling. That was hard for me emotionally,” she then added.

Motherhood with Lyra is her greatest achievement

Even though she left the Strictly ballroom in 2022, Janette said she believes her greatest achievement is motherhood with one-year-old Lyra.

She said the tot can say “Mama” and “happy”. She added that she’s “so magical and inquisitive”. Janette added that she’s “just enjoying the journey and watching her develop”.

However, with Aljaz returning to the show full-time, Janette has said this year will be a struggle.

Janette Manrara reveals ‘tough’ experience with unwell baby daughter Lyra

Janette Manrara, a former pro on Strictly Come Dancing and presenter of It Takes Two, got real about her recent parenting struggles when she took to Instagram on Friday to reveal her daughter had had a period of ill health.

The 40-year-old professional dancer, who shares baby Lyra with Strictly pro Aljaž Škorjanec, posted a video where she can be seen playing with her daughter as she caught fans up on family life.

“Lyra has been really unwell the last few days and after a doctor’s visit and antibiotics, she is now finally on the mend,” Janette penned. “It has been tough for me dealing with her being so sick for the first time and on my own. I wanted to make her better straight away and I just couldn’t.

“She was just so uncomfortable no matter what I did to help. Then add the usual exhaustion of parenting on top of that… my emotions were all over the place,” she continued.

Janette also spoke about how she was supported during this time by her close friends and has felt better since she has been able to get a smile out of poor Lyra.

“Parenting is hard and there are so many ups and downs, so…. to all of the parents out there who are having tough days…. YOU GOT THIS! Phone a friend, breathe, think of their smile, remember the days are long but the years are short. You’re doing an amazing job and loving them deeply,” she concluded.

Lyra is now one

Janette has since shared that Aljaz has come home so she could fit in some ‘me-time’. “Feeling grateful for an amazing husband and dad coming home to let mummy look after herself a little, Janette said.

Lyra’s special milestone

In July, the Strictly pros, who tied the knot in 2017, celebrated a happier moment with their sweet daughter – her first birthday.

The tiny tot was seen wearing an adorable pastel dress and hair bow as she sat in her high chair at a restaurant by a towering birthday cake adorned with ‘Lyra Rose is One’ in gold letters.

Janette shared that her husband’s parents had celebrated the special day with them as she thanked her adoring fans for their kind birthday wishes.

“We spent the day having a perfect family lunch, w/ a beautiful cake, and cuddles and love all day at home in the garden as the sun came out for our little sunshine! It was quaint, and warm and full of love,” the Florida native wrote.

Janette’s celebrity pals darted to the comments to wish Lyra a happy birthday including fellow Strictly stars Gorka Marquez and Vito Coppola, as well as This Morning host Alison Hammond and Loose Women panellist Ruth Langsford.

Lyra is often seen enjoying a playdate with the children of Janette’s Strictly friends. In July, the ballroom and Latin dancer spent the day with former Strictly pro Pasha Kovalev and his young daughters Maven and Noa he shares with Countdown star Rachel Riley.

Janette Manrara’s daughter Lyra is dad Aljaz’s double in new pictures

Janette Manrara has shared a string of precious new images of her baby daughter Lyra Rose – and she looks every inch her dad Aljaz Skorjanec’s double.

In the snapshots, which were shared to Instagram on Monday, little Lyra is pictured bonding with two of Janette’s friends who produce dance show Burn the Floor – the very show which brought Janette and Aljaz together.

The youngster looked so sweet in the images rocking a pretty pink summer dress complete with a peter pan collar and a pair of patent white shoes. For an added dose of cuteness, the tot also sported a large white bow in her hair.

Alongside her photos, Janette penned: “Beautiful afternoon yesterday with some of our most incredible friends!

“Lyra got to meet @mariamedcalf and Harley who are the producers of @burnthefloorofficial and most probably the biggest reason that @aljazskorjanec and I met! Haha! Drinks, Sunday Roast, & cuddles all afternoon. It was perfect.”

In the comments section, Janette’s fans and friends were quick to point out Lyra’s uncanny resemblance to her famous father. Stunned by their similarity, one remarked: “She’s growing up so quickly, what a sweetie and yes she does look like her daddy”, while a second noted: “So like her daddy” and a third added: “Beautiful photos, she’s definitely her daddy’s double.”

Janette and Aljaz welcomed their first child in July last year, with Aljaz announcing their happy family news on social media with a beautiful black-and-white photo.

Janette and Aljaz’s journey to parenthood

During an exclusive chat with HELLO!, Aljaz explained how the couple had been getting ready for fertility treatment but then conceived before treatment began.

He told us: “We were preparing for IVF mentally and physically and then it was just a relief to finally have that positive test. I have so much respect for any parent that goes through IVF, not just for what it puts them through physically but mentally too.”

Janette added: “I know that IVF can be really strenuous on a woman’s body and there is no guarantee it will work, so to know that this little miracle just came from a wonderful night we had together is amazing. I think the baby decided to make Mum and Dad panic a bit before saying, ‘Ok, fine, I’m coming up now.’”
