Amazon never seemed much like a company built by a daydreamer. The focus is on reality and execution.
Which is why, if you happened to be in the audience at Italian Tech Week in Turin recently, you might have been surprised to hear Bezos up on stage waxing poetic about the importance of wandering for success, and how exploring can open you up to make huge breakthroughs.
Bezos on the power of wandering
“You have to wander,” Bezos, sporting some new post-wedding stubble, told the audience. Yes, he acknowledged, many people see wandering as inefficient. But he views it as essential.
An Inc.com Featured Presentation
“Wandering is so important because wandering is a kind of humility,” he continued. (Bezos is a huge fan of humility.) “The only way to go straight to your destination is if you know where you’re going. And sometimes you know where you’re going, but sometimes you don’t.”
“Wandering is that acknowledgement that in life and in business and in exploration and in invention, in building a company, a lot of the time you can see the mountaintop, but you can’t see the trail and you have to explore and you have to wander. It may feel very inefficient, but it’s actually very valuable,” Bezos concluded.
The exploration-execution machine
If this doesn’t sound much like the hard-charging Jeff Bezos you’ve heard about over the years, don’t be too alarmed. The Amazon founder went on to stress that while wandering has its place, nose-down execution is essential as well.
“Sometimes when you know where you’re going, yes, you should be very efficient,” he answered when the host pressed him on how much wandering is too much.
“I think for exploration, but also determined execution, you just need to do both. And they actually do feed each other. It’s the things that come out of the execution [that] gives you new data and new ideas about what the next step should be in your exploration. So the two things don’t work against each other, they work together,” he said.
In this view exploration and execution work together like two parts of a machine to churn out achievement. Without one of the other, the machine breaks down and progress stalls. It’s an intriguing image, but not one that’s unique to Jeff Bezos.
In fact, scientists have looked into how breakthrough ideas happen in the real world and found something very close to what Bezos described in Turin.
A 3-word mantra for success
A few years ago Northwestern University economist Dashun Wang and his collaborators got curious about a phenomenon they observed in many fields. Whether you’re looking at the arts, science, or business, great minds often produce their best work in bursts of productivity.
Einstein, for instance, published his most influential papers over the course of his ‘annulis mirabilis’ or miracle year. Van Gogh’s best known works all come from a single two-year period.
What caused these fluorescences of brilliance, Wang wanted to know. To find out, his team pulled together data on the careers of more than 2,000 artists, 4,000 film directors, and 20,000 scientists using public data sources like IMDB and Google Scholar. Then they looked for patterns.
After crunching the data, the economists came up with a formula for how to get on a hot streak at work, whether you’re a business titan or a film director. Derek Thompson, writing for the Atlantic, crystallized it in three simple words: “Explore, then exploit.”
Before the hot streak that makes their names, great minds almost always spend a period of time bumbling around in the intellectual wilderness. They explore blind alleys and endure a series of failed experiments. They appear to produce little during this time. Only afterwards does the value of this period of wandering become clear.
“Neither exploration nor exploitation alone in isolation is associated with a hot streak. It’s the sequence of them together,” Wang commented. Great success usually follows a pattern of unfocused wandering followed by relentless execution.
Impatient? Remember Jeff Bezos’ words
Sound familiar? If this strikes you as pretty much identical to the formula for coming up with great ideas that Jeff Bezos described is Turin, then I wholeheartedly agree. The economists just backed it up with data. And Thompson did the world the favor of packaging it memorably
His three word formula should make the takeaway here easy to remember the next time you’re worried that your wandering is costing your valuable execution time. If you know exactly what you’re doing then it probably is. Time to buckle down.
But wandering is an essential part of the process of accomplishing great things. If you’re too proud or impatient to explore and experiment, chances are poor that you’ll settle on the right idea to work on. So remember Jeff Bezos and this three-word formula next time you’re tempted to beat yourself up for not making speedy enough progress.
Wandering is an essential ingredient for eventual excellence.

As Steve Jobs said, asking for help is “what separates, sometimes, the people who do things from the people who just dream about them.”
An Inc.com Featured Presentation
So if you need something, asking politely is effective. (As Mark Cuban says, being nice is one of the most underrated skills in business.)
But providing a reason is even more effective.
As described in Robert Cialdini’s book Influence, researchers asked people to try to butt in line to use a copier, using one of three phrases.
Phrase 1: “Excuse me, I have five pages. May I use the Xerox machine?”
The result? Sixty percent of the people standing in line let the individual in ahead of them. Most people like to be nice, or, at the very least, like to avoid confrontation.
Phrase 2: “I have five pages. May I use the Xerox machine because I am in a rush?”
The result? Ninety-four percent of the people standing in line let the individual in ahead of them. Also makes sense; most people like to be helpful.
Phrase 3: “Excuse me, I have five pages. May I use the Xerox machine because I have to make copies?” The result? Ninety-three percent of the people standing in line let the individual go ahead of them.
Which makes no sense. The second phrase provides a real reason; you’re in a hurry. The third phrase is where things get goofy: everyone in line needs to make copies, otherwise they wouldn’t be in line. “I have to make copies” isn’t a reason to jump ahead, yet nearly everyone let that person cut the line.
Why? As Cialdini writes, “A well-known principle of human behavior says that when we ask someone to do us a favor we will be more successful if we provide a reason. People simply like to have reasons for what they do.”
Whenever you want the people you lead to do something — to do anything — always include the word “because.” But don’t stop there. Make sure your “because” is clear, logical, and compelling.
Then people will want to work with you, not just for you.
Could
After you describe a problem, you ask, “What should we do?”
The first thing you should do is subsitute “could” for “should.” Research shows “should” typically limits possibilities by implying a finite set of choices. A study published in Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processesfound that using “should” typically results in people coming up with just two choices, which limits you to an either/or decision.
Unfortunately, most leaders tend to use “should” when they ask for input or feedback. If you’ve given the issue some thought, sifted through possibilities, and come up with what you feel are the two best options, you naturally present the solution as an either/or.
Considering what one could do shifts people from analyzing and weighing what they assume to be fixed and mutually exclusive alternatives to generating options that might reconcile underlying imperatives. Having a “could” mindset helps individuals engage in divergent thinking. [And] in group contexts, we find that adopting a could mindset encouraged individuals to spend more time discussing these dilemmas and generating more ideas.
The next time you encounter a problem, don’t think, “What should I do?”
And definitely don’t say, “What should we do?” Just state the problem, without in any way implying you have the answer, and ask, “What could we do?”
You’ll get much better input.
Together
Teams obviously work together, or at least should. Yet stating the obvious by using the word “together” can cause people to work harder, longer, and more effectively.
A study published in Journal of Experimental Social Psychology placed participants in two groups. The members of one group worked on a task on their own, while the other group was told they would work on the task “together,” and could ask for tips from team members.
When the results were tallied, the people who heard the word “together”
Worked almost 50 percent longer
Solved more problems correctly
Found it easier to stick with the task
Said the task was more “interesting,” and were more likely to perform that task again
Social cues that signal an invitation to work with others can fuel intrinsic motivation even when people work alone. The results suggest that cues of working together can inspire intrinsic motivation, turning work into play.
Not sure about the whole “play” thing where work is concerned, but feeling like you’re a part of a team — feeling like you’re a part of something bigger than yourself — makes a huge difference.
Say you’re forming a team. Don’t just tell people they’ll be a member of the team. Don’t just tell them what they need to accomplish. Say they’ll work on the project together. Say they’ll achieve the outcome together.
Science says they’ll likely work harder, longer, and better.
And will also enjoy the task, and being part of a team, a lot more.

My 20 years in the Entrepreneurs’ Organization have provided me with a front-row seat to significant business creation and operational strategy. Of the hundreds of entrepreneurs I know, four Portland, Oregon-based leaders hit home runs and exited at company valuations of $50 million or more: the founders of Ruby Receptionists, Survey Monkey, Jive Software and DW Fritz Automation.
Because I knew those companies very well, I wondered whether they all took similar actions to create that level of success. What did they have in common? Is there a formula other founders could follow to hit similar financial home runs?
The answer is a resounding “yes.” The four founders who sold their companies for more than $50 million each did these four things:
Created significant value for customers in a distinct way within their niche.
Developed super-clear branding around their unique product.
Created extremely robust company cultures.
Timed their exits precisely to maximize company value.
Each company created significant “enterprise value” — value inherent in the way it did business and its future earning potential. Aside from hard assets like cash or real estate, millions of dollars of value existed in their business models and operational expertise. As a result, serious buyers recognized that fact and paid generously for it. That is a rare distinction among small businesses.
So how do you create a business with such obvious enterprise value that big buyers will pay millions for it?
Replicate the following four “million-dollar ideas.” If you are able to implement even one successfully, by itself, it will create over $1 million in sales value for your company.
1. Deliver a ton of value customers can’t readily get elsewhere
I saw billionaire, James Williamson, interviewed on his private jet on YouTube. When asked how he became that rich, he didn’t hesitate: “Find a niche. Crush it. Deliver more value than anyone else.”
All four companies identified a unique product or service that customers both needed and valued. Or, they delivered a more standard product with a tweak or in a way not readily available elsewhere.
Here’s the key: Whatever your differentiators, your offering must be unique in three ways or more. Not just one or two — at least three.
If your primary product is not totally distinct and unattainable elsewhere — like a restaurant or electrical contractor — you can develop your three uniques. Maybe it’s a better product, lower price, different delivery method, more intuitive interface, unusual spin, friendlier service or a more personalized, memorable brand. It must be essentially better than everything else and also distinct in (at least) three ways.
Each of the four company product offerings was truly differentiated, and the company knew in what way — and pushed harder for further differentiation all day, every day.
2. Develop crystal clear branding around your specific differentiation
These companies knew what they were offering. They saw customers piling up and recognized why. Their marketing was clear about what they offered that others did not.
Maybe more importantly, they knew what they were not — and each was most definitely not everything to everyone. Only certain customers were right for them, so they focused on those and forgot the rest, even if the rest was a considerable number. That is to say, they served a specific market segment and did it better than anyone else but left the rest of the market to others.
3. Create a super strong culture focused on customer success
These companies created cultures you could feel when you walked into their offices, like a personality unto itself. You knew it was something special and different. The people were happy, motivated and focused on driving the company forward.
Each company’s core values were extremely focused. In all cases, half of the values concerned the customer and what the company was doing to benefit that customer. Things like “practice wowism” or “find a better way,” not just generic values like “trust.”
Each team member was hired because they matched those values. All were clear on what the company was, where it was going and how they could help it get there. They personified the strategy of rowing in the same direction. In a fundamental sense, they were a “cult” focused on creating unique value for customers and success for each other and the company. Their energy level approached frenetic.
4. Time your exit precisely to maximize sale value
My observation on business exits: Timing makes all the difference. A company that can barely sell on contract for $1 million at one point in the cycle could garner $10 million all cash at another. At times, specific business types are hot and highly sought after; at other times, they’re not. There can also be a long time between peaks in the cycle. Because of that, timing the cycle — and, therefore, demand — is probably more important than your personal timing and plan. The two seldom line up perfectly. These four owners struck while the iron was hot.
In all four cases, the companies sold to an entity that wanted to take the business to a higher level. One interesting note: Because of that, both historic actual profitability and cash flow were basically irrelevant. What the buyer thought they could do with the company in the future mattered most. They sold on what is known as “pro forma” value.
Angel investors, private equity or venture capital groups bought three of the four companies. In all cases, when one group showed interest in buying them, the company solicited other groups (often through a broker). That generally increased the first buyer’s interest and ultimately enabled the entrepreneur to exit at a 30% to 100% higher price than if they had worked solely with the first buyer. The buyers then took the companies to new heights, either by going public or selling to a larger strategic buyer. One of the four companies sold directly to a larger strategic buyer.
Even in their exits, the four shared significant commonalities.
Devise the perfect setup to catch lightning in a bottle
When I connected the dots between these four companies, it almost felt like being struck by lightning. I could not believe how common their trajectory was and, more importantly, how they got there. These four caught lightning in a bottle — and while some luck is always necessary, you can’t deny that their playbooks were quite similar and well-executed.
If your company can implement any (or all) of these ideas to their fullest potential, you will create millions of dollars in enterprise value.
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.
It’s easier than ever to feel lost — lost in the workplace, lost in your personal life, even lost in your overall purpose and mission as a human being. I personally blame a lot of this on social media. It’s the perfect concoction for depression, anxiety and the feeling of not knowing what path is right for you.
A couple of hours on the Zuckerberg Express (a.k.a. Facebook) and you’ll be fed other people’s successes so much you’ll start to doubt your own. A video of a fix-and-flip specialist will quickly make you think you need to stop what you’re working on, buy houses and renovate them yourself. You’ve never held a hammer and you don’t know what HVAC stands for, but if this 30-second video on Instagram taught you anything, it’s that the time is now…
Excuse my sarcasm, but even as I’m writing, I’m reminded of the ridiculous paths I’ve gone down thanks to social media. That’s a story for another time though. Through exploring and failing on many of these voyages, I’ve learned a tried and true method to keep me goal-oriented and combat as much of the social media facade as I can: whiteboarding.
Yes, you read that right. Structured and creative time away from all other work and life needs, with just a whiteboard, a marker and your thoughts. In my nine years as a business owner, I’ve found whiteboarding to be the single strongest tool for fine-tuning my ideas, innovating and niching down. Below are the three biggest rules I use for effective whiteboarding.
Before you start, remove the eraser from the room. It’s so easy to get hyper-critical of what you’re writing when you know you can erase it. By operating under the “no idea is a bad idea” philosophy, I’ve been able to discover new revenue streams for my business, fine-tune my goals and more. Not erasing anything is a great way to leave thoughts up on the board for further development. Sometimes an idea I quickly jotted down — that I would’ve erased in real time — just needed some further tweaking. That idea later became a huge component of my business moving forward.
2. Time your whiteboarding sessions
I like to do 20-minute sprints, but find an amount of time that feels comfortable for you. Remember, this exercise is for you. If 20 minutes is too long, do 10. If 20 minutes is too short, do 30. This is your time.
Turn a timer on and turn everything else off for whatever amount of time you decide. I like to stand up in front of the board (sometimes even pace) and write as much as my brain and hand will let me. After the allotted 20 minutes, I sit down and spend time reading and digging into each thought. Oftentimes, this is where I’m able to expand a simple thought into something much more developed and fleshed out. If I feel like I hit an “aha” moment, I take a photo of the board, then erase and flesh that idea out further. If I didn’t, I spend some more time reading and digesting, then I take a photo and get back to my work. Not every time will be one of those euphoric highs we all love about entrepreneurship and finding new ideas, but the simple act of doing this frequently creates clarity.
I personally do these whiteboard sessions once a week. I’ve found that to be frequent enough to work through things, but not so frequent to the point of wasting time or energy on the same thoughts over and over. If I’m feeling extra lost that week, rather than adding an extra session, I prefer to jot it down to work on at my next whiteboarding session. Routines are everything.
A lot of people talk about the power of whiteboarding in groups for creative brainstorming. I find that to also be an effective way to pull ideas out of a group, but the sessions need to be structured enough to not be a time suck for everyone and the groups need to be small pods before opening them up to bigger teams.
When my business partner Ian Rodriguez and I launched Innovo, we’d spend hours behind a whiteboard taking turns workshopping every little detail and idea. Those days were extremely effective for clarifying who we were and what we wanted to accomplish.
Once your business is moving you obviously can’t spend hours weekly doing those sessions though. In my opinion, the best go-forward strategy I’ve found here is to whiteboard solo, develop some thoughts and opinions, then bring your partner(s) and team in to take it to the next level. This allows for personal clarity as well as tapping into others’ skill sets and ideas.
Ideas are good, but clarity is great. Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself through whiteboarding — it’s become my secret weapon in entrepreneurship.

It is no secret that brands and companies are always on the hunt to elevate their presence in a competitive realm. Even the most recognizable brands are finding new ways to adapt to the sway of their consumers’ expectations to grow. However, some become too comfortable in a state of stagnation once they’ve reached the highest step on the winning podium.
Innovation is the lifeline of many companies, and to remain in stasis could eventually make your brand outdated. Thus, innovation is the key to growth that shouldn’t be overlooked. It doesn’t, however, have to be a drastic change that reinvents the wheel. Innovation can be subtle but significant, and there are many ways to achieve just that. Let’s explore the importance of easy ways to achieve innovation and how you can implement it into your internal strategy.
When your business achieves significant success with its product or service, it becomes crucial to uphold the principle of continuous evolution at its core. While this may appear self-evident, it is a common occurrence for prosperous brands to fall into complacency, stagnating their innovation process. Periods of inertia often provide an opportunity for competitors to outperform them with superior versions of those very same products or services. To maintain a sustainable competitive edge, companies must keep innovation perpetually in motion. The next out-of-the-box idea is easier said than done — however, keeping your brand relevant and modern is a more subtle, but noticeable way to keep your brand in a constant state of renewal. The best way to achieve this is through a brand refresh.
In our digital design agency, we have witnessed first-hand that when we assist industries with brand rejuvenation, it often leads to a surge in conversions and audience growth. Whether it’s a minor tweak or a comprehensive transformation, modernizing your brand’s design language, website or marketing materials can be a potent form of innovation. This involves making forward-looking visual UI decisions that harmonize with your existing brand style, thereby ensuring your design is future-proof. Even something as simple as a logo refresh can be a powerful statement to your audience, signaling that your brand is keeping pace with the times. Every upgrade contributes to the ongoing evolution of your brand’s identity.
Updating your brand website with tweaks to usability and accessibility is also a great way to innovate. When your company considers all users of all abilities, it not only makes it a great experience for everyone, but it also demonstrates to your consumer base that their experience with your brand is also prioritized just as anyone else’s. Incorporating ADA-compliant standards into your website, color schemes, typography sizes, alt text incorporation and more are just a few ways to boost users’ experience.
To truly ignite innovative thinking, fostering a culture of shared ideas and collaborative brainstorming is often the crucial catalyst to the next breakthrough concept. Consequently, it is vital for industry leaders to not only welcome but actively encourage input from their in-house teams.
This strategy may involve ensuring a diverse workforce, inclusive of both younger and older generations, to infuse a breadth of fresh perspectives and experiences that create a productive ground for ideas to thrive. Engaging team members from a younger demographic can be particularly beneficial, as they are typically current with the latest trends, user expectations and potentially outdated practices that the company might unwittingly still be employing. This collective knowledge and shared perspective can be the driving force behind meaningful and relevant innovation. According to UNICEF, hiring younger team members can help tap into the millennial and younger audiences since they are more attuned and familiar.
Further, innovation means growth and scalability. When you innovate for people of all demographics, you are expanding your audience base as well as growing your company’s conversions. Another best practice to achieve collaboration for fresh ideas is holding weekly idea sessions to share ideas internally on how to improve certain products or services based on client feedback and surveys. The crux here is to create an inclusive environment where every idea is heard and valued. Any dismissive attitude can rapidly quell team morale and stifle their enthusiasm for sharing their insights. Therefore, nurturing an open and receptive atmosphere is pivotal to driving successful and continuous innovation.
Often utilized in the digital design industry, including our agency, design thinking can help the structure of the way ideas flow. Design thinking is a problem-solving approach that emphasizes human-centered design. Design thinking incorporates empathizing with user needs, defining problems, ideating ways to improve a problem/idea, prototyping, testing, then circling back in iterative increments. Design thinking fosters a collaborative environment where multidisciplinary teams work together to find solutions. This diversity of perspectives can lead to more innovative ideas and solutions for your brand.
Additionally, it emphasizes an iterative process. Ideas are tested and refined based on user feedback, leading to continuous improvement. This ensures your brand stays updated and resonates with evolving customer expectations. Concepts and ideas can become more defined and not simply live on as ideas but can be put into an actionable space to eventually flourish. By incorporating a design-thinking approach into your company, your team can view growth with a fresh perspective.
In the relentless pursuit of brand supremacy, companies must continuously innovate to keep pace with ever-evolving customer expectations and outdo the competition. However, the idea of innovation often connotes seismic shifts and grandiose changes. Instead, the reality is that innovation can, and often does, happen incrementally — through brand refreshes, website updates and diversity in demographic insights — in a subtle, but powerful approach.
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.
Natural-born entrepreneurs are often bursting with creative ideas, new innovative thoughts and — more often than not — pretty enormous dreams. We can’t help it. For better or worse, it is how we are wired.
One of the first characteristics of an entrepreneur is our curious nature. Think about it: How often do you wake up at 2:45 a.m. with a new idea that you want to start immediately in the morning? I’ve been there hundreds of times — really, you should see my notes app on my phone! Entrepreneurs love ideas. We love building on our ideas over and over again, hoping to create something bigger than we can even imagine. We say things like, “I’m building for the future” or “I’m planting seeds for growth” every time we pile on some new project. It’s exhilarating — until it’s exhausting.
At some point, the go-go-go nature of our ideation patterns can begin to feel heavy or burdensome for some of us. So the question is, how much of this “planting of seeds” is really just the burying of ourselves in heaps of work that may be hindering our ability to actually grow and succeed?
Small business owners need to always be planning for the future — how else will their business grow? It’s an integral part of business ownership. Everyone wants to succeed. Planting seeds for growth, for example, spending on marketing or public relations, recruiting top-tier talent, attending networking events and so on, are extremely important. But how much time is being spent on planning for these activities versus the amount of time entrepreneurs spend on everything else necessary to run the show?
A recent study showed that 39% of business owners are already working over 60 hours per week. And you better believe those work weeks are packed with all the stress and pressure that every business owner struggles with, from employee concerns to client concerns and everyone’s favorite, “economic uncertainty.” Maybe cash flow is tighter. Maybe bills aren’t being paid as fast. It stinks. This, however, should not stop that creative, tired mind from coming up with fresh ideas.
But what if I miss out?
The conundrum is that we fear letting these good ideas go to waste. Or that if we don’t pursue the new ideas, we’re risking not achieving the success we’d surely have if we were to make it happen. As a fellow entrepreneur with high hopes and dreams, I refuse to enable dream-killing. It’s not in my DNA. I believe every and all dreams can come true. I also believe that nothing is possible if we aren’t well enough to take it all on.
My mother used to say to me, “You can’t fill a cup from an empty well.” It took me years to fully grasp what she meant. Then one day, while I was running my first business back in 2016, I had a complete meltdown. I hadn’t been sleeping much, I was under so much pressure having two children under two, and I had a list of things I wanted to do with the business. And I cracked under that pressure. I ended up in the ER, thinking I might’ve failed at everything — motherhood, marriage and entrepreneurship. It dawned on me then that I was DTM (doing too much) and I had not dedicated any time to filling up my own well so that I would be able to give from it.
Fast-forward to now. My current business is thriving. My children are the best of the best (I could go on, but this would end up being another 15 paragraphs!). My marriage is as strong as ever. But most importantly, I am full. I am full of energy, joy, ambition and yes, ideas. The difference between now and then is recognizing when to admit that I am full and to only take on what I can. We have to make an effort to discover new ways to manage our stress and emotional well-being, or it will rule —and ultimately ruin — our lives. However, managing that stress and sometimes realizing you can’t control everything isn’t easy for us. As entrepreneurs, we would rather play by our own rules. I still struggle with how to properly maintain that balance between spilling over with ideas and keeping myself well. It takes practice.
Earlier this year, I had huge plans to take the business to new heights. It was project after project. Except, this time, I had the strength to say, “One thing at a time.” I started keeping an organized list of ideas prioritized by importance, relevance and urgency. And I’ve allowed myself room to really focus on one seed in my garden of ideas.
This is the kind of advice you’ll often get when going to a therapist who specializes in cognitive behavioral therapy. Focus on the things that matter today. The more we get caught up in the things that may affect us tomorrow (or six months from now) the more we lose sight of the moment in which we can make a real impact as an entrepreneur.
Don’t stop. Pace yourself.
You must continue planting seeds. I will fight for this, always. But before that, you must not bury yourselves in work for the sake of saying, “I did it.” Your loved ones won’t care what you did if it breaks you. We chose this path of entrepreneurship for various reasons, be it for financial freedom, flexibility or to make an impact on the world. We are in control of our destinies. And if we remember that fact and hold ourselves accountable, not only to our businesses but to our whole selves, we will always be capable of making the impossible extremely, undeniably and wildly possible.

You have a brilliant idea that has the potential to change everything. You believe it will appeal to a wide audience and are passionate about it. So, how can you turn your concept into a reality? There are many people who deal with this issue. Many ambitious business founders struggle to go past the concept stage and begin implementing their ideas.
Resources being depleted, failure anxiety, self-doubt, procrastination and analytical paralysis are just a few of the traps they fall into. They wait impatiently for the appropriate situation, opportunity or connection to arise. Perfection, however, does not exist. The only way to make your vision a reality is to put in a lot of effort, draw lessons from your errors and keep going without looking for perfection.
Before you take any action, you need to have a clear vision of what you want to achieve and why you want to achieve it. In order to effectively plan for success, it’s vital to implement the SMART methodology when developing your vision. This means defining specific goals that are measurable in terms of the progress made over time; achievable within reasonable means; relevant in their ability to support broader plans; and anchored by clear deadlines.
For example, rather than simply wishing for entrepreneurial success, you might aim to create a profitable digital platform for freelancers seeking clients before December 2023. A strong “why” is similarly essential: Don’t just aim for wealth at any cost. Instead, align aspirations with personal meaning. Establishing shared dreams like reaching financial independence so that you can explore the world together as a family adds meaning to otherwise scattered pursuits.
2. Break down your goals into manageable steps
You need to divide your goals into doable steps after you have your vision and your “why.” This will assist you in coming up with an effective plan of action and preventing overload.
Determine the primary checkpoints or phases of your project before you begin. If you intend to start an online platform, for instance, some milestones may be:
Finally, prioritize your tasks based on urgency and importance. Use tools such as calendars, planners or apps to organize your tasks and track your progress.
The key to achieving any goal is taking consistent action every day. Even if you only have 15 minutes a day, use them wisely and productively.
Don’t wait for inspiration or motivation to strike. Instead, create a routine or a habit that supports your goal. For example, if you want to write a book, set a daily word-count goal, and write every morning before checking your email or social media.
Don’t let perfectionism or fear of failure stop you from taking action. Instead, embrace imperfection and failure as part of the learning process. For example, if you want to launch a podcast, don’t worry about having the best equipment or the most polished script. Just record your first episode, and publish it online.
Don’t compare yourself to others or get distracted by shiny objects. Instead, focus on your own journey, and celebrate your wins along the way. For example, if you want to grow your social media following, don’t obsess over how many likes or followers others have. Just post valuable content consistently, and engage with your audience authentically.
4. Seek feedback and support
Lone wolf mentality does not bode well in business endeavors, regardless of one’s talent or idea. Improvement of one’s product or service requires active participation, feedback and support from others. Seeking constructive feedback relevant to the project during its various stages could come in handy — potential customers, existing users, mentors, experts and peers could play a big role here.
Seek support from people who can help you with different aspects of your project: co-founders, partners, employees, freelancers, consultants, coaches, investors, etc. Delegate tasks that are not within your core competencies or that take too much time away from your main goals. Collaborate with people who share your vision and values and who can complement your skills and strengths.
Seek inspiration from people who have achieved what you want to achieve: role models, mentors, heroes, etc. Learn from their stories, strategies, mistakes and successes. Reach out to them if possible, and ask for advice or guidance. Follow their example, but also find your own voice and style.

At my first job, while I was impressed by the advanced equipment and technology, I was rather disappointed by the need for more openness to new ideas. My manager rejected all the new ideas I proposed for our projects. The pain of ideas getting killed resonated with a couple of other friends. So, we decided to start our own company where we could put our ideas into action.
Of course, not all our ideas were successful, but that’s the risk of entrepreneurship, and we are happy that we had the chance to try them. Today, our organization is a strong team of over 300 people who are encouraged and motivated to experiment and share ideas. Moreover, the intrapreneurs within these 300 people have grown professionally and fueled the company’s overall growth.
The opportunities to ideate, test and scale products by our intrapreneurs have allowed our organization to launch vital new products and services. In addition, our labs’ products have allowed us to serve clients and help them intuitively, accurately and efficiently make critical decisions.
That’s the power of intrapreneurship — everyone wins when employees receive the freedom and support to innovate and create.
The fancy word — “startup.” Starting up is never easy.
Many employees at every organization once dreamed of starting their own company. However, upon looking at the responsibilities on their shoulders, such employees decide against taking such a risk. But with the right mentorship and support system, they can carve out a laudable path of entrepreneurship as intrapreneurs.
American business software company, Intuit, encourages its employees to create prototypes to test their hypotheses. Their “unit of one” approach for testing and scaling ideas promotes constant innovation. Essentially, Intuit ensures that employees test their hypothesis with just one customer, ideally someone best served by it. For example, suppose the target persona finds the MVP useful and recommends it. In that case, the hypothesis can scale to a larger cohort to observe a bigger dataset.
Repeat interactions with everyday customers — rural-area store clerks — allowed one Intuit employee to recognize that each sale was kept in the shop owner’s “memory” due to a lack of on-site computers or cash registers with integrated accounting features.
The answer? Since the target audience predominantly used smartphones, the team built a simple application that bundled point-of-sale accounting, inventory management and printed receipts.
The prototype was created, tested and approved for scaling — within seven days!
Triumphant outcomes are routinely tagged as “overnight success,” whether from innovation or intrapreneurship programs. Yet, the truth could not be further away from this adopted belief.
Building a healthy culture that celebrates intrapreneurship requires a mix of systems, tools and hard work. I believe that the ball starts rolling right from the leadership. Organizations can take cues from several studies, research papers and working models on better cultivating a culture of intrapreneurship.
Neil Fogarty, an instructor of Entrepreneurship in the Dept. of Management & Organization in the Smeal College of Business at PSU, offers a framework for creating a supportive environment for raising entrepreneurs. Leaders may say, “I get it, but,” Fogarty replies, “Here is how you can go about it.”
The framework helps switch employee thinking from a cost-center perspective to one of personal profit-center. As a result, leaders can help raise motivated, proactive intrapreneurs and also understand how to tackle budgetary constraints, propensity to take risks and other crucial commitments.
It’s worth taking a deep dive into this framework; meanwhile, here is how we go about intrapreneurship at our company.
In my two decades of work experience, I have participated in countless discussions — brainstorming sessions, OKR feedback, policy debates, product quality reviews, etc.
Most of us love listening to what we would like to hear; however, we encourage the daring minority — intrapreneurs — to challenge the status quo.
In my experience, it is crucial to establish a structure where people can fearlessly submit their ideas and suggestions. Moreover, it is essential to provide them with the right ecosystem to execute those ideas. Of course, not every idea would be successful, but the “biggest risk is not taking any risk,” as Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook, says.
Here are three prominent practices we follow to encourage intrapreneurship culture:
The OKRs:
The sales targets are not just set for the sales team. The operations team needs to walk hand-in-hand in the following ways:
Identifying the gaps at the client end to open more business opportunities
Suggesting market gaps where the company can position itself strategically to bring more business
Creating systems and processes for efficient and productive work
Honing people skills to effectively manage teams
This way, the VPs, managers and team leads run small companies as a part of the big company. In addition, we give intrapreneurs hands-on mentorship in the form of an in-house program called “altMBA.”
In-house MBA programs:
Creating leaders at every level of the organization chart — especially those who staunchly believe in innovation — requires workplace training.
While traditional classroom settings can offer many theoretical insights, practical altMBA workshops have helped employees provide efficient feedback, become better communicators, apply “first principles thinking” and learn how to ask better questions.
Make-a-thons:
At our organization, we conduct an annual hackathon called “make-a-thon.” This event helps us create and support a culture of intrapreneurship within the organization.
“Make-a-thon” takes place over two days, where people create teams to build a minimal viable product (MVP). Then, at the close of the event, teams pitch their prototype.
What’s the requirement? A problem that bothers someone every day at work. Slow administrative approvals? Friction while accessing files from a database? It can be anything! The results have surprised us every time.
Over the years, we have tweaked this system’s design and found specific characteristics that help bring standout results.
We found that cross-pollination (making cross-departmental teams) exposes everyone to unexplored, alternate viewpoints. Next, we insist on executing ideas in short turnaround times rather than coming up with groundbreaking ideas. Finally, we foster a lean theory of execution — no idea is “big” or “small.”
Apple’s former Chief Design Officer, Jony Ive, once remarked about Steve Jobs: “I think he better than anyone understood that while ideas ultimately can be so powerful, they begin as fragile, barely formed thoughts,so easily just squished.”
In conclusion, to avoid losing promising ideas and nurture intrapreneurs, here are a few actionable steps one can take:
Encourage and reward risk-taking and innovation
Provide resources and support for employees to develop and implement new ideas
Arif Qazi/InsiderMore companies are finding success with the four-day workweek. A recent trial of 33 companies had overwhelmingly successful results.
The results are in: It’s time for your company to stop working on Fridays (or Mondays).
The latest, perhaps most convincing evidence yet for the shift to a four-day workweek comes from a six-month trial which began in February 2022 in which 33 companies with employees in six countries decreased their employees’ workload to four days, or 32 hours, a week. Organized by 4 Day Week Global, the real-world experiment sought to see whether the employees could be just as productive in 80% of the time — all for the same pay. The results were overwhelmingly positive: Companies in the program reported increased revenue and improved employee health and well-being, and had a positive impact on the environment. And after the success, a hundred more companies that together employ thousands of people are considering or are already implementing the same approach.
So if you’ve ever tried to persuade your boss to shift to a four-day workweek, this is the best evidence yet that it can work. The results of the new report were unequivocal: The four-day workweek was better for everyone.
‘It probably sounds crazy, but it works’
At the outset of the trial, employees at Soothing Solutions, a Dundalk, Ireland-based company that makes cough lozenges for children, were skeptical that a four-day working week would be feasible, let alone profitable. But the founders Sinéad Crowther and Denise Lauaki had high hopes. When the company was founded in 2017, the duo wanted to establish a people-focused culture, so when Crowther learned about 4 Day Week’s program in 2021, she saw it as a way to attract and retain talent.
Since Soothing Solutions hired its first employees last year, no staff members have left the company, and Crowther told me the anecdotal feedback about the four-day week had been so glowing that it almost moved her to tears. “One of our employees has an elderly parent who was terminally ill, and she got to spend three, four days a week with them,” she told me. “She said nothing can give her that time back. She wouldn’t have got to do that in any other job.” Another worker has been able to pursue her passion for photography in her time off, Crowther said, adding that “it turns out, she’s a fantastic photographer!”
Because Soothing Solutions started operations using the four-day week, the founders don’t have anything to compare their business growth to, but Crowther isn’t worried about any negative impact a four-day week might have on business, even as the company grows. When we spoke, Soothing Solutions had just launched on Amazon and had its first UK sale. Its products are available in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Cyprus, and Scotland, with plans to expand further. “We have absolutely no concerns,” she said. “It probably sounds crazy, but it works.”
4 Day Week Global is a nonprofit community platform that promotes the four-day workweek by helping companies implement it and by funding research into the future of work. The organization was established after the success of a landmark trial program at its cofounder Andrew Barnes’ New Zealand company Perpetual Guardian. To conduct trials at companies and analyze their results, the group has partnered with academics at Harvard Business School, Oxford University, and the University of Pennsylvania.
The four-day-week movement has been gaining momentum on the heels of the Great Resignation and the push from employees to rethink the way we work. The tech startup Bolt became the first unicorn to trial it in 2021, finding it so successful that it implemented it after three months. Other trials of shorter weeks have found success as well: A 2021 trial in Iceland found positive results, and a 2019 research paper by Henley Business School found that two-thirds of businesses operating on a four-day week saw employee productivity increase.
There is some pushback, though. A shorter week could mean employees’ workload increases each day, causing more stress rather than less. For companies that experience significantly busier periods around holidays or during the summer, it may not be possible to extend the program across the whole year. And many companies, such as banks or insurance companies that require around-the-clock customer service or news organizations that follow a 24-hour news cycle, aren’t able to shutter for even one day each week. But in those cases, companies could approach the four-day week the way they already handle weekends: Simply arrange teams’ schedules so there are always people working.
No downsides
The ongoing push for a four-day workweek isn’t the first time there’s been a movement to upend the traditional model of work. Until 1926, the standard US workweek lasted six days. Then, Henry Ford reduced the workweek at his namesake company down to five days. He believed an extra day off would increase workers’ productivity and give workers more leisure time to spend more money — hopefully on Ford cars. The trend caught on, and, after organizing by workers in favor of the shift, the Fair Labor Standards Act set the standard for the workweek at 44 hours; an amendment in 1940 set the now-standard 40-hour week. Fast forward to today, and our norms appear ripe for a shake-up once again.
Barry Prost, a cofounder of the Irish company Rent a Recruiter, a specialist talent-acquisition service, took part in the six-month 4 Day Week trial with the goal of addressing staff turnover — a problem for many businesses since the coronavirus pandemic. When the pandemic began, Rent a Recruiter was already moving to a permanent remote-work model, and after hearing about the program the company decided to try the four-day week as well. To Prost, it was particularly important to ensure the switch didn’t hurt clients. Despite these reservations, Prost told me that not only had customers been supportive of the modified schedule, but some had even asked about implementing the policy themselves.
Crucially, the new approach has brought huge gains to the small startup, which employs 20 people. Over the six-month trial period, Rent a Recruiter doubled its gross profits and calculated that its staff’s productivity doubled over that time as well. And though it wasn’t the initial motivation, Prost told me the benefits had shown up in more than just the company’s bottom line. “Anecdotally, we have a manager who’s also a psychotherapist — she’s now able to spend more time on her therapy practice,” he said. “We’ve got mums and parents who are able to drop off and pick up their kids on a Friday, which they wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise.”
While staff well-being and retention are important, the trial also was associated with a revenue boost among the participating companies. Among the 16 companies in the trial that provided revenue data, combined revenue for the companies, weighted by size, increased by 8.14%, which for some companies was nearly 40% higher than revenue growth during the same six-month period of the previous year.
The companies that took part in the trial have reported almost no downsides. None of the 27 companies that filled out a final survey for participants said they had any plans to return to a five-day week. And nearly all of the 495 employees involved in the trial wanted to maintain the four-day working week. According to the post-trial surveys, everyone from CEOs and managers to junior employees noticed far-reaching benefits, and a new UK-wide trial is now underway.
Fewer work hours may also help the environment and gender inequality
While adopters of a four-day workweek might be primarily seeking a business impact — in revenue or employee well-being — there could also be less-obvious benefits.
For one thing, less time working correlates with lower carbon emissions — people are commuting less, and businesses use less energy. The 4 Day Week trial found that participants spent an hour less time commuting than before the trial. And as Orla Kelly, an environmental sociologist at University College Dublin who was the lead researcher for the 4 Day Week trial, told me, the shorter workweek also helps people make more pro-environmental choices. “When people are working longer hours, they tend to be in this kind of work-spend cycle where consumption patterns tend to be quite intensive,” Kelly said. With less free time, people are more likely to buy food in disposable plastic packaging, drive to work instead of walking or taking public transportation, and spend more money on material goods. Kelly tells me that because this is hard to measure, the research is still in its early stages, but she hopes to dive deeper into the idea and provide more concrete evidence of the environmental benefits of a shorter working week.
A four-day week also provides vast improvements in well-being, life satisfaction, and sleep for women. Since women tend to take on more caring responsibilities, the extra day off work was most beneficial for them, allowing the extra load of emotional labor to be spread more evenly. In Ireland, where many of the companies in the trial were based, 70% of part-time workers are women. “Women tend to often be in jobs that pay less, so they tend to be the ones that move to part time, even if they don’t want to,” Kelly told me. In the past few years especially, women have been leaving the workforce in droves, or cutting back hours, over burnout or a lack of childcare options. “This can be problematic for their long-term career trajectory, their pension contributions, and the dynamics of power within the household,” Kelly said. Cutting back working hours for everyone helps women stay in their full-time jobs and not feel as if they’re getting pushed out of the workforce.
It’s unlikely that the world will shift to a four-day week overnight, but the trial produced real benefits and found it’s possible for many different kinds of corporations, as long as they are willing, to make the change. As companies continue to grapple with attracting and retaining staff, the four-day week could be a relatively simple solution. And after the latest trial, there aren’t many excuses not to try it out.

Having spent many years in the sports world, I often find that sports ideas and business ideas are not that different. During a time when I was serving as a coach in a girls’ lacrosse program, I was asked to help a team that had just had a series of tough games.
Morale was low. My coaching friend and I knew we had to inject energy into them, so we came up with a cheer called the Heart and Hustle chant. It goes like this:
Coaches: H-squared!
Players: Heart and Hustle!
And repeat until everyone’s pumped up.
Simple, right? We instituted this little cheer and suddenly these young girls — about 12 years old — got fired up. The team was playing as I had never seen them play before. The chant invigorated them and they powered through.
They won in more ways than one.
Fast forward to today, and that chant is still shared by every team that comes through that lacrosse program — which has expanded to over 400 girls playing in any given year. There’s a Heart and Hustle tournament, Heart and Hustle T-shirts and in my last year in the program, I received a necklace from a group of players with an H2, which represents — you guessed it — Heart and Hustle. It never ceases to amaze me that a simple cheer grew from one team and spread across the entire organization.
What does this have to do with business? Everything.
Great ideas run the world. But what makes an idea great? When I think back on that cheer and then on my current career, I think there are three key elements: authentic desire, channeled energy and receptive people.
There are fake intentions everywhere — and believe me, they don’t stick. We can intuitively feel whether an idea is coming from an authentic place.
Getting an idea to stick starts with not focusing on sticking but on fueling an intrinsic desire to be of service. I’m convinced that’s why so many successful businesses describe themselves as people-focused or human-centric and then follow up those words with action. A team that truly wants to make a positive change in the world or really values its company mission will inherently be more impactful than one backed only by flimsy, half-hearted slogans.
Focus on your best
We all know (and love) those happy-go-lucky people who always seem cheerful and optimistic. Maybe you’re one of them. But while that kind of positivity can be extremely helpful in creating a welcoming work environment, it won’t make or break a company.
You create force and movement when you channel your positive energy into the best projects with the highest priority. Scattering your motivation into too many projects leaves every project without the momentum needed to deliver true impact. This responsibility often falls on management. Your team may have 10 fantastic projects they’d like to ideate on, but if you only have time for three realistically, you’re doing all 10 projects a disservice by not channeling your energy. Choose your best projects and put everything into them.
It’s often difficult to know when a team member simply isn’t the right fit. Sometimes it’s a matter of skills, but often it’s something beyond a list on a resume.
A team member with average skills who shares your vision will work far more effectively than one who has exemplary skills but doesn’t care. When you’re building your team, seek prospects who lean in when discussing your company’s mission. These employees will pick themselves up after an unsuccessful campaign, get back to work and try even harder to reach shared goals next time. These kinds of people are often the ones who come up with the ideas that stick.
Part of what makes ideas stick is having the perfect blend of circumstances that allows all of those three components to come together — along with other far more nebulous elements like timing, community attitudes and trends — which is part of the reason why not all ideas stick. Even good ideas. So what can you do to make sure you get ideas that stick? Focus on the elements you can control and bring them together as frequently as possible.
There’s no perfect roadmap and certainly no instruction manual. But getting the best people together to share their authentic desires toward a shared goal, with targeted focus, puts your team and your business in the best possible place to stir up those world-changing ideas. As a leader, that’s the most important part of my job: to create the best atmosphere I can and encourage creativity, spark and a free flow of ideas. That, to me, is heart and hustle.
This is an opinion editorial by Bernardo Filipe, a life-long thinker, philosopher and author of “The Straight Science.”
“Of course, I hate the bitcoin success and I don’t welcome a currency that’s useful to kidnappers and extortionists, and so forth. Nor do I like just shoveling out a few extra billions and billions of dollars to somebody who just invented a new financial product out of thin air. So I think I should say modestly that I think the whole damn development is disgusting and contrary to the interests of civilization. And I’ll leave the criticism to others.” — Charlie Munger
It’s time we condense into a couple of bullet points some of the ways in which bitcoin will likely contribute to civilization. For some of its contributions have by now become apparent. Afterwards, we’ll analyze Munger’s arguments. So, to start off, bitcoin:
Reduces administrative bloat. By making the ledger public, much of the work needed to verify and audit wealth transfers is obliterated.
Cheaply transfers large sums of wealth across the globe.
Can potentially work like a treasury bond but delivering higher yield returns. This is because the real return on bonds is always lower than the nominal expectation, due to inflation.
Will increasingly function as a secure store of wealth or even as a savings account, as its market capitalization grows and its volatility decreases. Both the colossal amount of computing power that already powers Bitcoin, and the manner in which this computing power is distributed across several jurisdictions, ensure that Bitcoin’s network and therefore ledger is incorruptible.
The contribution to civilization is expected to be so significant that gold and treasury bonds should gradually become obsolete, as bitcoin’s adoption rate increases. So bitcoin is indeed merely another financial product, or asset, at the moment, but assuming its adoption keeps growing, it will gradually replace older, less efficient, and ultimately more expensive financial products and assets. Bitcoin is real financial engineering that stores work-energy flows from energy production sites right into an incorruptible and irreproducible digital asset. As Michael Saylor elucidates, bitcoin is thermodynamically-sound monetary energy.
Let’s now dissect Munger’s arguments:
Munger: “Nor do I like just shoveling out a few extra billions and billions of dollars to somebody who just invented a new financial product out of thin air.”
It is an interesting point, at least psychologically, but if we consider that every worthwhile invention started “out of thin air,” as an idea inside someone’s brain, we realize that it holds no ground. To give an example, the Wright brothers had first to imagine an airplane in their minds, “out of thin air,” as Munger says, before getting down to actually building it. Moreover, those billions and billions of dollars are not exactly going to the creator of bitcoin. Whoever buys bitcoin is in effect buying a piece of the Bitcoin network, i.e., a piece of finite blockchain property, and that piece will belong to the buyer and only the buyer as soon as he acquires it. The earlier adopters become wealthier as a side-effect of a growing adoption of the asset, but the positive civilizational event here is the radical optimization of wealth flows, as summarized above.
If Munger perhaps meant that one bitcoin can be easily created, or replicated, then that’s not true either. It costs, by design, a significant amount of energy to mine (i.e., to create) a single bitcoin. The side effect of this mining mechanic is that it incentivizes us to put to use lots of waste energy and also to repurpose power infrastructure. This is of course another excellent contribution to civilization.
Munger: “I hate the bitcoin success and I don’t welcome a currency that’s useful to kidnappers and extortionists.”
The thing with this line of reasoning is that it is equivalent to saying “I hate the success of knives and I don’t welcome a tool that’s useful to criminals.” But what if I told you that you can cut food, skin animals and help build an entire civilization with knives? Or like saying: “I hate fire because there are pyromaniacs.” But what if I told you that the “invention” of fire was practically the point at which human beings diverged from mere animals?
Not to mention that the moment regulation is tightened, criminals using bitcoin won’t be very bright: the ledger is public, and all transactions are tracked. As regulation and AML/KYC rules start being enforced (on exchanges, and perhaps even on wallets), criminality driven by blockchain tech should gradually vanish. Good old plain cash, i.e. physical cash, is way more difficult to track. Why would a drug dealer, for example, accept bitcoin in his regulated, IRS-tracked wallet? Under such a regulatory scenario, in which the anonymity of bitcoin holders is non-existent to authorities, criminal activity driven by bitcoin transactions would hardly survive.
Sure, the criminals might create their own black-market of wallets and marketplaces, but as soon as a criminal wallet connected with a regulated, IRS-tracked wallet, it would sound an alarm. The “digital asset black-market” would consequently short-circuit itself from the economy–the criminal wouldn’t be able to use the wealth in his criminal wallet on anything other than untracked, criminal goods and services. Whereas now, the money, i.e. the physical cash, the criminal makes on the black-market can flow back into supermarkets, bars, restaurants, etc. and the criminal can effectively make a living out of crime.
In fact, the smartest anarchists are against bitcoin’s wide adoption, too, because they recognize it can lead to a society where your every move is tracked. So it follows that criminals, too, should be against it. If bitcoin works at the moment for them, this is because we are still early in its adoption and there is practically no regulation. After all, we are talking about replacing your physical, untracked wallet, with a digital, tracked wallet. How could crime prosper under these circumstances? Only through extremely organized crime and/or with government help.
When the first airplane the Wright brothers built crashed, there were guys laughing at the brothers. When the first monkeys burned themselves with fire, there were other monkeys laughing at them. They probably remained monkeys back then. As for you… Will you remain one now?

“I’m more interested in asking the question, is the world that we want to live in one where we need to hyperfinancialize every aspect of an individual’s life because financial conditions on a macro level are such that you have to financialize your whole being in order to keep up or get ahead? Is that truly a victory for democracy and for the kind of psycho-spiritual wellbeing of all of us and the lives we want to live? Versus something like Bitcoin, that’s a definancializing force that basically says because we think a world might be better where you’re actually able to save money and you don’t just have to spend it or go invest or speculate on some stuff, would that unlock ways for you to feel more fulfilled or satisfied as a person and would you then be able to pursue other things? I think ultimately the end of Bitcoin is that we all think collectively less about money and more about other things that we’re interested in.”
I made these statements on a recent episode of the “What Bitcoin Did” podcast in a discussion about Bitcoin and the ways I think it can catalyze positive changes in our interior lives, as contrasted with the contemporary state of Web 3.
We frequently discuss and theorize the ways in which Bitcoin can reshape or reconfigure our external realities, whether they be political, monetary, legislative, etc. But I don’t think enough attention is paid to how Bitcoin can initiate a similarly monumental reshaping of our interior lives, a process which, in the aggregate, can lead to a trickling up of priorities and values.
I want to talk about two different conceptions of freedom to illustrate why I think we fixate so much on one of them. When folks describe themselves as “freedom maximalists,” they’re primarily referring to the idea of negative freedom, a freedom from intrusive external constraints. This type of freedom is obviously of fundamental, paramount importance. Without freedom from certain external constraints, meaningful pursuit of self-realization, what we would refer to as positive freedom, is difficult, if not impossible to pursue.
We tend to get so focused on the negative freedom aspects of Bitcoin that we fail to fully appreciate the positive freedom that Bitcoin facilitates. Which is to say we get so fixated on the ways in which Bitcoin precludes external intrusions or constraints (freedom from) that we don’t explore the ways in which Bitcoin can create an environment that allows us to more rigorously pursue the fullest expression of our selves (freedom to).
[N.B. for my humanities/philosophy friends: Yes, I am drawing on the work of Isaiah Berlin with these positive/negative freedom terms]
I would argue that freedom maximalism is not sustainably fulfilling long-term, because it’s not really an end state. It’s a necessary liminal posture, a means to achieving a certain environment in which positive freedom can be productively exercised. However, negative freedom without positive freedom is like having an infinite number of TV channels but no idea what you want to watch. It’s like having the freedom to pursue anything you want without any way of determining what you actually want to pursue or what’s worth pursuing.
Americans are particularly attuned to ideas of negative freedom, but not particularly adept when it comes to positive freedom. We can see this everywhere, including in the Bitcoin space. If one makes a living, builds a following, or crafts an entire identity around being a “freedom maximalist,” one’s livelihood and sense of self depends on the continuing existence of external constraints for one to decry. One can unwittingly (and mostly subconsciously) become the bird that has grown to love its cage, as author Lewis Hyde once wrote of irony.
So while freedom maximalism (negative freedom) is vitally important, we should also pursue and prioritize what my wife has aptly coined intentionality maximalism (positive freedom), which is a perspective and a way of living in our interior lives. Bitcoin does not get enough credit for its ability and its potential to foster this type of inward-looking change.
What does intentionality maximalism look like in our everyday experience of life? One salient example is our relationship with the unbridled consumerism endemic in a fiat monetary system.
Allow me to share some statistics that illustrate just how warped this relationship has become:
Per the Los Angeles Times, there are 300,000 items in the average American home.
Per NPR, the average size of the American home has nearly tripled in size over the past 50 years.
Nevertheless, one out of every ten Americans rent offsite storage, which is the fastest growing segment of the commercial real estate industry over the past four decades.
British research found that the average 10-year-old owns 238 toys but plays with just 12 daily.
The average American family spends $1,700 on clothes annually, while also throwing away, on average, 65 pounds of clothing per year.
You get the idea. There is practically no end to the data showing the absurd amount of shit we own and the growing space (physical and mental) that this shit occupies.
Americans are consuming more than ever.

Despite their purchasing power not meaningfully growing.
Source: U.S. Bureau Of Labor Statistics
What explains this? One factor is that we measure our economic health by how much we spend, a singularly fiat and Keynesian way of gauging economic vitality. Consumer spending is roughly 70% of GDP. If we spend less, the metric we use to gauge economic health drops.
There’s also the fact that we see more ads than ever.
But, most importantly, there’s a widespread high time preference that is, I think, part of the very fabric of our culture.
Here’s where I think Bitcoin comes into play. So much of this rat-race orgy of consumption is high-time-preference behavior incentivized by the fiat monetary system, which ensures your money loses value over time. Since your purchasing power is sand in an hourglass, and since you work harder than ever just to keep up, consumer spending serves both a practical and a pacifying purpose. In other words, we are incentivized to spend because not spending or investing means our money just sits and loses value. And if we work so hard, many of us at jobs we don’t particularly enjoy, just to keep up, shouldn’t we also buy all the new cool stuff to make us feel like it’s all worth it?
If we remove ourselves from some of the rat race stuff it clears space for us to think less about money, which means we can be more intentional about everything else. Hence the idea of intentionality maximalism. We sort of reclaim our positive freedom, our freedom to pursue the highest expression of ourselves. Bitcoin, in my opinion, is ultimately about looking for a sustainable alternative to the rat-race model.
It’s really a contrast of values. Consumerism is a value of the fiat system. It is both literally a value, since we measure economic health in large part by measuring consumption, and also an ingrained mode of behavior. By disincentivizing mindless, reflexive consumption and incentivizing a lower time preference, Bitcoin, if it continues to grow in adoption, offers the promise of a cultural foregrounding of deeper things, like fulfilling pursuits, relationships, creativity, contribution to community, presence, etc.
When it comes to this interior transformation, this intentionality maximalism, and the ways in which Bitcoin moves us in that direction, I think Bitcoin shares some fundamental principles with minimalism, a movement that has deep, ancient roots, but has been gathering more popular momentum in the last decade or so. Proponents of minimalism, mindful of the constraints unchecked consumerism can place on our lived experience, pursue lives with fewer unused, unnecessary possessions in order to reclaim freedom and mastery over one’s life and the space to pursue what’s important. Which is to say the pursuit of a more intentional life.
Joshua Fields Millburn, co-founder of theminimalists.com, describes minimalism as “the thing that gets us past the things so we can make room for life’s important things—which aren’t things at all.”
The promise of Bitcoin, to borrow Millburn’s articulation, is to be the money that, through its soundness, allows us to get past thinking about money all the time so that we can make room for life’s important things – which tend to get lost, neglected, and/or sacrificed in consumption and the systemically coerced pursuit of more and more money.
We spend so much time thinking about money (how to get it, how to get more of it, how to make it grow, how to keep up with inflation, how to invest it, how to spend it, what to spend it on, how to get rich quick, how to pay the bills, etc). And to a certain extent this will always be true. I am not advocating for the Platonic form of communism here.
But when money does not hold its value, when it is continuously debased, when the sovereign debt is so massive it must be inflated away, and when the economic health of a country is measured by how much it consumes, it creates an environment in which money is practically all we think about.
This is why I have been so critical/skeptical of some of the proposals in other corners of the crypto world, many of which seem to be seeking to financialize every corner of our lives. I think this perpetuates, and perhaps intensifies, our high-time-preference environment.
In contrast, the implications and downstream effects of collectively lowering our time preference, which I think necessarily involves less consumerism, simply cannot be understated. Imagine an entire population finally able to save in a sound money and to spend more time and energy on the things that mean the most to them.
Now, again, I’m not envisioning a utopian end-state here where we’re all singing songs around the campfire (though I do enjoy songs and campfires). I’m talking about returning some headspace and some presence back to folks who have, by necessity, grown accustomed to spending every waking moment thinking about money and consumption. I’m talking about a transformation of our interior lives, one that clears space for more intentional living. And I think an under-appreciated aspect of Bitcoin is its potential to catalyze such a transformation.
So be a freedom maximalist, because it’s important. But don’t stop there, because that alone won’t keep you full, long-term. Be an intentionality maximalist, too.
Many people live lives like this – compelled, constrained, and unintentional within a fiat system:

This is an opinion editorial by Nozomi Hayase Ph.D., who has a background in psychology and human development.
The 2008 financial meltdown, with subsequent bank bailouts and a cycle of austerity, led to the weakening of the public’s trust in governments and institutions. Bitcoin emerged as a response to this global crisis of legitimacy.
Now, more than a decade later, the economic damage created by the pandemic has triggered a further breakdown of the system. As the Federal Reserve’s infinite money printing creates high inflation, Bitcoin steadily increases its popularity as a safe haven.
At the same time, as the old economy is being destroyed, the leading global institutions have stepped forward to reboot the entire system. The key organization, the World Economic Forum (WEF), with the theme of “The Great Reset,” prepares for the rollout of the central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).
CBDC Versus Bitcoin
Agustin Carstens, head of the Bank for International Settlements, explains CBDCs as programmable money that gives issuers the power to control every transaction. Using these powers, issuers can restrict what ordinary people are allowed to spend money on.
In response to central banks creating their own digital currencies, the original cypherpunk and cryptographer, Adam Back tweeted:
Now, Bitcoin and CBDCs, two different types of digital currency with contrasting features, race toward a global adoption. The crux of this competition involves different visions of the world. The outcome of this race will determine the future of humanity.
Shift Of Authority
The crisis of legitimacy triggered by the financial panic of 2008 signaled the demise of the Western liberal democracy. This has begun to create a shift in the locus of authority in our society.
The idea of democracy that inspired the birth of the United States was based on a humanistic worldview. In the past, authority was placed in the gods, and the sacred text. People sought answers from the external. They turned to religion, the Bible and Popes for their decisions.
A move towards democracy brought a shift in values. It placed authority in human hands, putting emphasis on the individual. People who were seeking behavioral norms outside of themselves began to rely on their personal experience.
Threat To Democracy
Yuval Noah Harari, Israeli public intellectual and historian, talks about how, in this crisis of democracy, a threat to the humanistic worldview is now emerging from laboratories and research departments in places like Silicon Valley.
Harrai, who is a lead advisor to Klaus Schwab, head of the World Economic Forum (WEF), points out ways in which science is challenging the story of humanism.
He explains that scientists are saying there is no such thing as free will and that freedom is just another myth, an empty term that humans have invented. He defines feelings as biochemical processes of calculation and contends that there is no reason to consider them the highest authority in the world.
Techno-Religion
Harari, who has been praised by the likes of Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates, and celebrated by tech workers in Silicon Valley, explains how in this twilight of democracy, authority is now once again moving away from humans. This time, he states it is not some gods above the clouds that control human destiny, but algorithms, and data in the clouds of the Amazon and big tech giants.
He describes a new revolution happening around this shift of authority. It is led by a “techno-religion”, the ideology that technology provides salvation. He explains that this techno-religion is a data religion within which “data and information becomes a supreme source of authority and of meaning in the world.” It makes us believe that technology knows more about us than we do ourselves. It tells us, “Don’t listen to feeling or gut intuition. Just turn to data.”
Acting as a spokesperson for this new sect of techno religion, Harari predicts a coming of a future without humanity. He states that humans like you and I will disappear and that the earth will be dominated by very different kinds of beings or entities. Under the new authority of algorithms, Harari describes how human beings are viewed as no longer spiritual souls, but become “hackable animals.”
Warning For Humanity
Some saw what was coming and warned about the potential machine takeover of the world and the elimination of human beings.
Julian Assange, WikiLeaks publisher and one of the notable Cypherpunks, was aware of this trend from early on. He called on those who are technologically capable to take up strong cryptography as a non-violent weapon to defend individual liberty.
Assange warned us: “The future of humanity is the struggle between humans that control machines and machines that control humans.”
As central planners try to deploy CBDCs to push their techno-religious movement, a breakthrough in computer science has brought us an alternative vision of the future of humanity.
Value Of Individual Freedom
Bitcoin, in its 14 years of existence, has provided a response to the crisis of Western liberal democracy, allowing us to truly embody humanistic values.
There was an inherent weakness in the system of representative democracy. The mysterious creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto recognized that this system was not adequate by itself to secure the value of freedom and the place of individuals as supreme authority in the system.
Those who gained control over the production of money have created an economic system that works to their advantage. Concentration of economic power in a few hands turned democracy into a system of control. With sophisticated methods of persuasion, through use of propaganda and PR under the guise of democracy, the population was subjected to manipulation of their feelings.
By challenging the monopoly of money, Bitcoin — cypherpunks’ holy grail — has enabled economic liberty. With the principle of “don’t trust, verify”, this technology places the source of legitimacy with individuals, for the first time in history.
Rather than residing in the clouds of tech giants, authority is now descending into the human heart.
The birth of Bitcoin has helped creativity and freedom of expression to flourish, creating the resurgence of the arts. It now inspires a new renaissance of humanism.
Before the Renaissance, history was seen as being shaped by divine forces. With the advent of the Renaissance, beginning in the 14th century in Italy, this view shifted.
The Renaissance placed human beings at the center of life. A man was regarded as a partner in the creation of Gods, to actively engage in shaping the course of their own lives.
Just as the Renaissance placed emphasis on the individual, now, the Bitcoin Renaissance 2.0 creates sovereign individuals, enabling human beings to truly come alive.
A Path Of Salvation Via Proof-Of-Work
People from all nations, with different backgrounds, started to align themselves with humanistic ideals that exist at the core of Bitcoin. Through meetups and conferences, they are now finding one another. They begin to speak the same language and share values.
Transcending their cultural differences, they have become Bitcoiners. They are bearers of humanity, beginning to claim the source of authority in human imagination.
This is now creating a humanistic movement, generating a force strong enough to counter the techno revolution.
Between Bitcoin and CBDCs, we are now presented with a choice.
Worshipers of machine intelligence offer a promise of salvation, through which we once again are made to rely on authority outside of us, this time, on external algorithms.
Bitcoin presents an alternative model of salvation via proof-of-work, where we no longer need to trust authorities outside of ourselves. Through each individual voluntarily participating in a network of consensus, each of us can engage in validating our own truth.
While a path of technological salvation moves a society toward the post-human era, Bitcoin, pro-human technology inspires each individual to create a new world of humanism.
El Salvador (“The Savior”)
El Salvador, the country that first declared bitcoin legal tender, has become a center of this Renaissance 2.0. They are leading the way.
Using Bitcoin as a tool, the President Nayib Bukele began to stand up against the central banks and their financial imperialism.
As the leaders of G7 members are trying to launch centrally controlled digital slave coins, Bukele engages in efforts to increase Bitcoin adoption to open up a path of self-determination.
Paolo Ardoino, CTO of Bitfinex, the world’s leading digital asset exchange is working to provide a platform for financial freedom. Along with his efforts to expand Bitcoin adoption, he aims to maximize decentralization by developing Keet. io, peer-to-peer Chat Apps that are built without any central server.
Can El Salvador, under Bukele’s leadership and his policy of economic liberty, engage people in proof-of-work — to organize a network toward the salvation of humanity?
Positive changes are already happening. Bitcoin Renaissance 2.0 inspires new ideas, bringing in investors and capital to help people build alternatives to big data and centralized cloud products, to enable freedom.
Securing The Future Of Humanity
We human beings share our destiny. The life of all species is intertwined. Our choices and actions affect one another.
With the accelerated speed of technological advancement, as we are being quietly transported into a virtual reality, are we leaving behind our own body and our soul? Without human beings who can feel, what would happen to the earth, ecosphere, trees, rivers, and all of animals?
We Bitcoiners are custodians for this planet. By practicing self-custody and running full nodes which maintain the ecosystem, we preserve the autonomy of individuals. We can work toward securing the future of humanity.
A network of messiahs created through technologically-empowered men and women coming together starts to form a formidable defense against the transhumanism agendas.
Bitcoin presents a humanistic alternative to technological salvation.
Hyperbitconization has just begun. The dawn of new humanity is near. With hearts that beat every 10 minutes, we human beings can claim our freedom and responsibility to steward mother earth and all of her creation.

According to Merriam-Webster, a nation-state is: “A form of political organization under which a relatively homogeneous people inhabit a sovereign state.”
Is that what Bitcoiners are — or are becoming? Like it or not, Bitcoiners are political by default. If you believe in sound money and act upon that belief through investing financial resources, time, energy, intellect, emotion and will into space, you are in direct political opposition to the current world system. But are we relatively homogeneous? Yes! If we allow that homogeneity can be an abstraction rather than limited to physical genetic origins. What binds us as a nation is our shared allegiance to such eternal values as love, peace, fairness and liberty. What preserves us as a nation is that we voluntarily submit to the rule of law embodied in the Bitcoin protocol — a code of honor that rewards the practice of those values and punishes breaches of the contract written in that code. Do we inhabit a sovereign state? Again, I believe that in the abstract the answer is “yes.” Bitcoiners, by definition, are sovereign individuals. We declare ourselves sovereigns over our own wealth and destinies by eschewing the Keynesian economics model and its fiat money system enshrined in Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) that corrupts everything it touches.
We are what Abraham Lincoln describes in the Gettysburg Address as “…a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” This kind of talk is “fightin’ words” when it reaches the ears of the King Georges of the world, who declare themselves sovereign over us. We are revolutionaries in the true sense of the word and are at war with those who seek to enslave us. Though we commit no physical violence, our very existence and our thought crimes are anathema to the fiat elites. We can point to January 3, 2009, as the day the nation was conceived with the Genesis block. Since then, we have been gestating and developing as body and soul, hidden in the womb of cryptographic code and protected from prying eyes. But the day of birth is coming soon with the requisite labor pains. It looks like we have escaped the abortionist, but will we succumb to fear at the crisis of birth as enemies unleash all the weapons at their disposal? The ESG disinformation peddlers, the global banking establishment, their minions in governments and their vicious enforcers are not going to simply declare victory and let us be on our way in peace.
There are some who talk of forming a Bitcoin political party, which may sound good at first, but Bitcoiners are international, citizens of the world. If you follow the logical progression, you could even say we already have a world government, one that isn’t beholden to any other government with aspirations of world domination. “Bitcoinia” is genuinely sovereign, and that bestows on us the potential to be sovereign individuals as well. We have, if you will, plural citizenship. I’m a citizen of the USA, of Bitcoinia, and the Kingdom of God (a.k.a., the Kingdom of Heaven). One is natural, one is digital and one is spiritual — a trifecta of sovereign allegiances.
As we all know, Bitcoin is something new, unique, and powerful enough to change the world for the better. I would declare the same for “Bitcoinians.” As a nation, we are also utterly unique — and yet we are the most diverse union of peoples in history. There are many things we disagree on, i.e., how to evangelize nocoiners, what swear words to use as adjectives when describing altcoin scammers, and just how much privacy we are willing to give up for institutional adoption and hyperbitcoinization. We are an unlikely collection of some of the wealthiest, most well-educated of every race and creed, together with some of the unbanked poorest of the poor — all yearning to breathe the fresh air of freedom and drink the pure water of our God-given liberty. We long to make our own life choices, and not to be treated as chattel by a cabal of amoral self-anointed overlords.
But who, until now, ever thought there could be a functioning decentralized government with no dictator, president, or prime minister? Even in a libertarian’s wildest dreams this might seem an impossibility. And yet, here we are. The possibilities are endless, and the potential for good in this world “simply” by fixing the money are beyond measuring. This isn’t to say that this miraculous protocol is a panacea for all the world’s ills but is a great base from which to launch ‘till Christ returns.
We have abundant reasons to be optimistic and even giddy at the prospects of all that can and will be accomplished in this revolution. We are witnesses and participants in an unprecedented historical turning with promises of ending endless wars, worldwide productivity, and fully unleashed economic prosperity. How does that look in real life? Enjoy the show, folks!

This is an opinion editorial by Frank Nuessle, previously a TV executive, university professor and publishing entrepreneur.
This is the second part of an essay that explores lessons to be learned from how Samuel Adams framed the American Revolution and how that same framing can speed the evolution of the vibrant American bitcoin economy that we all know is somewhere invisibly over the horizon. Part one can be found here.
Because the United States has the most to lose with the coming destruction of the U.S. petrodollar system, the focus of my research and conversation is an attempt to answer this question: “What is the social system design that will allow for the viral growth of a bitcoin economy in the United States?” The story of the American bitcoin economy is critical to the viral development of a sound money economy.
I believe that Samuel Adams destroyed the “divine right of kings” paradigm with his framing, just as bitcoin must destroy the “divine right of fiat money” paradigm if it is to be successful.
It is important for us to understand the frame of mind of the average European and American colonist in the 1760s. At that time in Western civilization, a king was essentially a god and was to be worshiped as such. The divine right of kings paradigm had captured human imagination and ruled Europe for 500 years.
In Europe at that time, there was a Spanish Empire, a British Empire and a French Empire, among other minor empires, each with its own king. This explains why Europe was in a perpetual state of war. How many divine kings can one world have?
Adams destroyed that paradigm because he recognized that America’s struggle for independence was a spiritual struggle above all. He believed that self-government and freedom were paramount for self governance and that the essential qualities were respect for all people, integrity, austerity and selfless service to the community.
How can Samuel Adams’ framing of the American fight for independence serve to break the current grip on the American paradigm of the divine right of fiat money?
Just as Adams was able to infuse the higher-level qualities of respect for all and service to the community into the struggle for American independence, Bitcoiners must find new ways to infuse values into money.
A successful American bitcoin economy will incorporate social values into money and develop participatory social structures that foster place-based communities and local economic structures along with a culture of reciprocity and mutual aid.
I suggest we label this new paradigm the “divine right of community,” where money serves the whole and not vice versa. Money is only a tool and is not to be put on a pedestal.
VISA founder Dee Hock envisioned such a community when he wrote, “The organization of the future will be the embodiment of community based on shared purpose calling to the higher aspirations of the people.”
In 1968, Hock was president of a small bank outside of Seattle when he took over a collapsing credit card company, franchised by Bank of America. Within three years, he founded VISA, resurrecting the nascent credit card industry that was failing at the time. VISA became the largest commercial enterprise on Earth.
In his 1999 book, “The Birth of the Chaordic Age,” Hock wrote, “Ahead, the possibility of regeneration of individuality, liberty, community, and ethics such as the world has never known, and a harmony with nature, with one another, and with the divine intelligence, such as the world has always dreamed.”
The challenge to fulfilling Hock’s vision is that we all are unwittingly still living out of the paradigm that the robber barons left us: Financial capital is sacred above all else. This scarcity mindset is also the chief barrier to convincing Bitcoin skeptics.
A direct assault on a skeptic’s beliefs only intensifies their fear and resistance. Something deeper has to shift. As change agents for Bitcoin, we have to address this deeper thing, this wound at the heart of the fiat money paradigm and the scarcity it produces.
Like all living things, paradigms have a lifespan. As the fiat money paradigm ages, serious cracks have begun to appear.
My deceased friend Joseph Chilton Pierce used to say, “A miracle is the name we give to the crack that allows the light to shine through from a larger, more radiant reality.” This crack says not only that the bigger reality is coming soon, but that it is more than you can imagine. It is both a glimpse and a promise.
The Bitcoin Revolution begins when we allow ourselves to envision a different kind of economy, a different kind of world. Bitcoiners have to offer an invitation into that larger, more beautiful world.
Just as Samuel Adams was able to ignite the American Revolution with his paradigm-busting vision of freedom, Bitcoin miracle workers can do the same for the world of sound money.

As I sit here writing this piece, I search for the words to best describe my thoughts on the present state of the world. I couldn’t seem to find words to express my vantage point until I landed on Clockwork Orange. Stanley Kubrick’s 1971 dystopian crime thriller, “A Clockwork Orange,” presents ranging views of individualism and freewill to authoritarianism and force. The parallels between some people’s idea that we are headed toward a global totalitarian state known as the “Great Reset” and the intense level of response to the blatant use of force by The State and power in numbers expressed in the counterforce of the “Great Awakening” fit firmly in the scripting of “A Clockwork Orange.” We have a heightened global awareness of these buzz words like Great Reset and Great Awakening, but what I believe is the best descriptor of these connected, yet conflicting, ideas of global magnitude is the “Great Confusion.”
The Great Confusion stems from an underlying absence of the inverse, which is clarity. I believe if we as humans desire to grow as a species, we must sync to a global baseline level of objective truth or 100% clarity.
“Bitcoin, Clockwork Orange” is my musing on how clarity through money removes us from the “Great Confusion.”
To find clarity, we must sync to a global baseline of objective truth. What can we use as the baseline? It must be something that everyone can agree on, regardless of spoken language and geographical location, like mathematics and physics. Whether in the United States or El Salvador, two plus two will always equal four, and there is no place on earth where humans can jump off a building and fly; gravity will win. These objective truths are the perfect baseline for humans to build upon as a strong base layer.
“Mathematics is the base layer of language” — @FossGregFoss
On January 3, 2009, Satoshi Nakamoto released a decentralized system of peer-to-peer electronic cash in the form of Bitcoin, and that has changed our world forever, giving humanity clarity in the form of money. The Bitcoin network and its unit of account, bitcoin, flips upside down everything we once knew about finance. The time-value of money is the core principle of finance — that money today is worth more than money tomorrow. The current time-value of money only exists because a central authority can alter the volume of currency within an economic system at any time. Due to the central control of money creation, the saying is that governments can always print more money to handle their debts, so they have a risk-free rate. This risk-free rate is the base rate added when layering other risk factors when analyzing an investment in other bonds or equities. A central authority’s ability to alter the underlying money supply and affect these rates means they can affect everything in an economy and completely distort price signals. If looked at through its most sinister lens, controlled issuance of money supply in traditional finance is how central authorities keep their population on the road to serfdom; people work exponentially more onerous for a currency growing exponentially weaker, thereby being robbed of their time expressed through destroyed purchasing power.
“Finance is the time value of money. Bitcoin is the monetary value of time.” — @Lisa_Hough_
Satoshi Nakamoto solved the ills associated with time theft through currency debasement by discovering absolute scarcity using technologies that leverage the objective truth of mathematics and physics to back a natively digital supply by time itself, the only absolutely scarce asset we possess. Paraphrasing the work outlined in Chapter 2, Bitcoin is Time in Gigi’s “21 Lessons,” the Bitcoin Network is a decentralized timestamping server that uses asymmetric cryptography to create causality in cyberspace. Those causal events (known data needed to create a hash of that known data which is linked to the next block) link together by giving them meaning through entropy or the randomness, in the form of no one in a decentralized system knowing who is going to win the next block reward and which transaction will be hashed into a block to create the particular Merkel root defining a point in time that resembles an absolute now in the digital realm. Discovering a method of determining the “now” or “time” in a decentralized adversarial system is what allowed Satoshi Nakamoto to solve the centralization of time-keeping of the ledger to prevent double spending, as well as definable “time” in cyberspace, which is necessary for the determination of “when” transactions occurred.
(Bitcoin is simply a transaction-based ledger where the transactions are the spreading of ownership of the units of time encapsulated in bits called satoshis by signing continuous digital signatures to this append-only distributed timestamp server). The entropy of asymmetric cryptography creates an irreversible arrow of this “now” time, creating a legitimate past, present and unknown future. As mentioned, the objective truth of physics also comes into play through the unpredictability expressed through the same asymmetric cryptography in mathematics applied to the physical exertion of energy within proof-of-work consensus to solve the cryptographic puzzle, therefore emitting more bitcoin into circulation. Proof-of-work is essential to the underlying value of bitcoin because it runs physical computation, the only native form of energy transfer in the digital realm with no way to cheat it. Through an asymmetric cryptographic function, proof-of-work creates a scenario where the time taken to brute force the answer over the almost nonexistent time to verify the findings is expressed via computationally time-derived bits.
Finally, Nakamoto utilized the difficulty adjustment in block height or Bitcoin’s native clock to connect this computational work of time-exertion back to our physical world by using a cryptanalytically stable problem, allowing for a speed limit on the time expressed between our physical world (an average 10-minute block time) and the digital realm (a difficulty adjustment every 2016 blocks). The finality of this time-derived speed limit connecting our physical world to the digital world allows the absolutely scarce hard-cap of 21 million bitcoin expressed in the Bitcoin Core source code to be upheld.
No matter how much energy or computation you throw at the network, you can not speed up the emission schedule, and more energy does not mean more bitcoin; bitcoins underlying value is not computation through energy intensity but computation through energy exertion measuring the time asymmetry made possible through one-way cryptography.
“When you have scarcity in money, you have abundance in everything else.” — @JeffBooth
In conclusion, humanity is in the midst of the Great Confusion — some people think we are headed towards a Great Reset while others believe we are in a Great Awakening — and some don’t care. This lack of focus and attention is due to overwhelming noise and misdirection.
The signal we are looking for can be found at the depths of our oldest social structure, money, which has now been transformed through objective truth in mathematics and physics into the perfect signal. Bitcoin leverages that perfection to invert everything we know about finance and money. Satoshi Nakamoto used objective truth in mathematics and physics to bridge a synthetic digital time and space to our physical time and space in a decentralized manner allowing for coordination of when an absolute volume of costly unforgeable bits of digital time interlock with our physical efforts of computation.
The discovery of absolute mathematical scarcity with an intrinsic value of inescapable costliness in the real physical world linked to the heartbeat of a synthetic time in block height controlled by the cryptanalytic stability of the difficulty adjustment, a physical world time-based adjustment, is the most crucial discovery in monetary application of all time. Bitcoin is the unstoppable march of time-derived money wrapped in mathematics and physics, defining a pure price signal. Tick tock next block.

Pink Floyd’s 1979 rock opera hit “Another Brick in the Wall,” challenged authoritarianism and the rigidity of modern education.
The dysfunction of the school system captured by the song continues even now. In the U.S. public schools are regulated and controlled by the various state, local and federal governments. The education system, funded through taxes and fiat money (declared by decree, with no intrinsic value) is based on the idea of students as a blank slate — a view that we are all born with no innate skills, strengths or personality traits.
This philosophy that denies the inborn uniqueness of each child has been incorporated into the curriculum for kindergarten through twelfth grade, through initiatives like the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Prescribed academic standards are applied uniformly to every child, with a federal requirement that all schools test all children annually.
The Brazilian educator Paulo Freire criticized the way mainstream schools teach students to the test, calling it, “The banking concept of education,” where teachers deposit information into students’ minds. This approach to education enforces conformity, while suppressing independent thinking and creativity in students.
As the centrally-managed education system turns young people into cogs in the wheel of The State apparatus, an alternative form of learning environment is now emerging around bitcoin, the hardest money ever created.
Creation Of Money As A Discovery Process
Bitcoin enabled the separation of money and The State for the first time in history. With its unique monetary design, bitcoin also enables a departure from the banking model of education.
Bitcoin is a new class of asset-based currency. It has intrinsic value with its fixed supply at 21 million bitcoin.
With Bitcoin, the creation of money involves a process of discovery. While the fiat monetary system creates money out of thin air, satoshis come into existence through the function called mining. Using game theory that creates fairness, and a fixed set of rules, computers around the world engage in a process which utilizes the SHA-256 hash function to generate new coins.
By igniting the spirit of play, and engaging people in this creation of money, the mysterious creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto, has opened up a new learning space where people can enter voluntarily.
The wealth of the 21 million bitcoin is like a treasure that is slowly released to humanity, waiting to be claimed. A consensus algorithm known as proof-of-work is used to facilitate each person’s participation in the network to discover this hidden wealth. Through engaging in sportsmanship in the treasure hunt, people begin to learn new skills, develop capacities to work as a team and solve problems collaboratively.
The New Gift Economy
Bitcoin fuels innovation and entrepreneurship. New jobs and opportunities that are created allow us to think freely, to develop original ideas and experiment with them. Here, instead of working to meet the criteria imposed by others, each individual can set their own standards for success and strive to live up to them with genuine feedback from the free market.
This is now creating a new form of gift economy that encourages each of us to find our own unique gifts; talents and abilities that we are all born with. It has revitalized the original vision of education rooted in the Latin word, “educare” which means to bring out what is within us; to nurture our inborn nature, releasing the genius within.
Bitcoin is a sensei that does not exercise authority. Instead of directions from instructors, the protocol maintains the integrity of the learning environment. Bitcoin teaches us that what we love is what we are gifted at doing and what we are born to do. The network incentivizes each of us to find what we love to do.
Bitocoin’s new gift economy began to transform work from meaningless labor to vocation. As if being called by the creator of Bitcoin, people began to follow their heart and take the path that leads to their own personal greatness.
Building Blocks For The Future
Institutionalized education, by denying each person’s uniqueness, has created a widespread poverty of imagination. It has led to the deterioration of our society, to the creation of a debt based economy that extracts rather than produces, and to a reliance on the use of violence to solve conflicts rather than diplomacy and dialogue.
The built-in scarcity of bitcoin (a fixed monetary supply, with issuance that decreases every four years) guarantees an increase in its value, thus creating a flow of abundance.
Pierre Rochard, Vice President of mining company Research RiotBlockchain talked about how this money that cannot be inflated can be used to increase purchasing power and engage people in charitable giving:
Benefiting from the network effect of donated purchasing power, people can begin to invest in themselves, directing their resources, time and energies toward their original vision.
As the fiat economy stagnates, with growing unemployment and cuts in wages, the Bitcoin space, tapping into our inherent potentials, is always recruiting new talent. With new economic activities being generated, the youth of today are now given a choice to refuse to become another brick in the wall that segregates humanity through the hierarchy of class, race and nationality, thereby perpetuating war and economic exploitation.
They can now begin to imagine and actively engage in building blocks of their own design for their own future.
Path To Prosperity
El Salvador, the country that first declared bitcoin legal tender, is leading the way. A community in El Zonte, a small surf town with a population of 3,000 began to claim financial sovereignty, enlivening the dream for the poorest members of Salvadorian society.
Inspired by Bitcoin Beach (El Zonte), Bitcoin Ekasi in South Africa engaged in efforts to use bitcoin as a medium of exchange to empower an impoverished South African township. By leveraging bitcoin, they are generating humanitarian support to build schools, clean water infrastructure and sustainable farming systems.
With the use of the Lightning Network, Bitcoin’s Layer 2 scaling solution, Bitcoin’s new gift economy can now become circular. It allows each of us to receive Satoshi Nakamoto’s gift to find what we as individuals are uniquely gifted with, and to simultaneously return the gift by sharing our talents and skills with our communities. The more one is gifted, the greater contribution one can make.
Each person holds a key to a puzzle that can unlock the hidden treasure given to humanity. Through our active participation in the collaborative discovery of the 21 million coins, the value of the network increases. Our society — as a whole — gets enriched. Through each claiming their own genius, we together inherit the wealth of the world, delivering prosperity for all people.

This is an opinion editorial by Frank Nuessle, previously a T.V. executive, university professor and publishing entrepreneur.
This is the seldom told story of Samuel Adams, and how he became a “paradigm-buster,” even though he’d never heard of a paradigm.
Most of us only know Samuel Adams as a Boston beer or as the cousin of the famous John Adams who became the second President of the U.S. in 1797.
Samuel Adams was a total failure until middle life, when at the age of 41, he proceeded to become, as Thomas Jefferson described him as, “truly the man of the Revolution.”
On a wet night in the winter of 1770 in a Boston Tavern where local farmers gathered, Samuel Adams proved his political, paradigm-bending genius. It was there that he argued successfully that Britain would soon begin to tax horses, cows and sheep and that it was better to rebel sooner rather than later.
Starting in the mid-1760s, Adams began railing against British Imperial overreach. Then in 1768, two regiments of British soldiers debarked in Boston Harbor. This occupation gave Adams the moral high ground.
Adams began advertising every misstep of the British troops, both real and fictional. Soon women and children began to ridicule the British occupiers blasting them with all the abusive language they could muster. Tension mounted.
On the evening of March 5, 1770, Boston was a tinderbox with armed British soldiers in assembly and a rowdy Boston crowd of over a thousand shouting obscenities at the British. Tempers flared. Chaos reigned as the soldiers leveled their guns.
When the smoke cleared, five men lay dead with many more wounded.
Although Samuel was no orator, on March 6, he gave dignity, morale authority and harmony to his argument that nothing would restore Boston to order but the immediate removal of the British troops.
Within months, the British troops were gone.
That the British backed down gave hope and a moral foundation to the evolving American Revolution which culminated with the British defeat by exhaustion in 1783.
Samuel Adams created the story of the Boston massacre with his rhetoric, his logic and his deeply held idealism, which led him to becoming one of the first to advocate for American independence.
You could say that he replaced the public perception that the British Empire could not be defeated with the possibility of American independence.
I would argue that Samuel Adams was America’s first marketing genius, the first to seize and shape the popular American imagination.
Adams knew that people are governed more by their feelings than by reason; yet with rigorous logic, he tugged at America’s emotions and opened the Colonies to the possibility of American independence.
The idea of American independence spread because it was a paradigm buster whose time had come.
A paradigm, as I define it, is an internally coherent system of thought, a story, that results in useful insights but that is also only half right because it finds it difficult to escape its own assumptions. The concept of a paradigm was formulated by the philosopher Thomas Kuhn in 1970 and has become a foundational idea.
Up to the 1770s the colonists believed that the British Empire was too powerful to challenge, and that they would be better off acquiescing to British rule. They were living within a mindset, a paradigm — that the British could not be defeated.
It took Samuel Adams and others over a decade to change the mindset of enough people in the Colonies so that the American Revolution became possible.
The American Revolution began with an idea just as the bitcoin revolution began with an idea.
The tale of Samuel Adam and the American Revolution shows that Bitcoiners can break through America’s common perception that the Federal Reserve cartel’s government-controlled fiat money is the only money system that can be trusted.
The brilliance of the design of Bitcoin has proven its resilience over its 13-year lifespan, but bitcoin as sound money needs to evolve further so that it becomes more than someone’s get-rich-quick scheme.
A survey of 1,000 Americans found that 62% of cryptocurrency investors believe they’ll get rich. That is not enough.
There is nothing wrong with wanting to be well-off. I certainly hope that bitcoin helps to secure my financial freedom, yet my nuance is a different, and I think, a more profound objective than simply getting rich.
Getting rich is the rallying cry of the current oligarchic, “take-make-waste,” economic paradigm.
America has been living this get-rich paradigm under steroids since Gordon Gekko, played by Michael Douglas in the 1987 movie, “Wall Street,” proclaims that “Greed is good.” In the movie, Gekko goes on to say that greed will save the, “malfunctioning corporation called the U.S.A.”
Evaluate for yourself how much greed has improved America in the 35 years since this movie.
Most people do not want to think about the money system itself, but when they think about the money in their pocket, they live in fear that they will not have enough money to comfortably live out their life. I know that fear and have found myself bankrupt twice.
Because our current paradigm about money drives fear while also being rife with greed, deception and get-rich-quick schemes, we are left with a seriously deteriorating American society.
Under a mental paradigm where greed rules, there is never enough.
As Robert Breedlove brilliantly points out in his intro to D.C. Schindler’s book on Plato, “Force and fiat are shown to be incompatible with human reason, and thus generative of a collapse into relativism … where anyone’s “truth” is only as credible as the threat of force backing it.”
Doesn’t this seem a good description of America pulling itself apart today?
Have you ever thought of the possibility that our money system itself could be creating the fear and the social isolation that so many Americans suffer?
Money is a critical social system, and, like all social systems, it must be judged by the results it produces.
As Jeff Booth suggests, the dominance of money as a social system can be shown because money has historically trumped the law with the laws always changing over time to favor money. This is not a healthy outcome.
I am convinced that a sound money bitcoin economy that stimulates fair trade will change everything.
Civilization began because of fair trade. It is time to take that next evolutionary journey into a sound money system that stimulates fair local trade, societal well-being and environmental sustainability.
America’s blind spot about the money system is a direct result of our living under an outdated mental construct, a paradigm, a story about money that is outdated and that needs to evolve.
But first, we each must acknowledge that to some degree, each of us are living under and are influenced by this existing fiat money paradigm that drives both fear and greed in us.
It is time to move up the evolutionary ladder and develop a more sophisticated worldview now that we know the limits of our planet; limits that the current money paradigm does not acknowledge.
The current corporate sustainability fad called environmental, social and governance (ESG) is simply lipstick on the pig.
To fight the current fiat money paradigm is futile if we cannot offer an inspiring alternative.
That means we need a new paradigm, a new story, a new way of looking at money — one that serves the whole, and not just the small self.
Bitcoin is the technological innovation of this revolution. But what is the social innovation? It must begin with a new story. How do we articulate the new sound money paradigm?
The second part of this essay will explore ideas about a new sound money story, call it a sound money paradigm-shifter, that can speed the evolution of the vibrant Bitcoin Economy we all know is somewhere invisibly over the horizon.

This is an opinion editorial by Maxx Mannheimer, a former sales account manager with a background in training and industrial-organizational psychology.
The technological innovation which Bitcoin represents is rarely apparent at first glance; the societal implications of that innovation are even less obvious. Those who don’t engage directly with the technology and speak with other Bitcoiners may completely miss the broader significance of what is happening with Bitcoin. The Bitcoin community has been called a cult and an ideology. I prefer to think of it in a simpler term which is grounded in fact: Bitcoin is a tool. Many things can be said of what the tool is and how it functions, but ultimately I believe it is a tool of comparison and measurement, much like a ruler or caliper. The manner in which we interact with Bitcoin as a tool is one of personal skill.
Throughout this article I will use the term “Bitcoiner” as a shorthand for those who engage with the network. I find it important to clarify that, as I use it, this term does not denote any kind of personal identity, but rather as a reference to an individual who uses Bitcoin. To illustrate the semantic difference I will invite you to consider the title of carpenter or electrician. These terms do not comprehensively define these individuals, but they are useful for a brief description.
Through a similar occupational lense, I have found that inspecting Bitcoin through the perspective of organizational development has been useful in my understanding of the dynamics and implications of the technology. Bitcoin represents a completely novel form of organization. One which is entirely decentralized and in which the individual participants are not required to meet or interact directly in order to create value. This article will extend the metaphor to consider what a human resource (HR) department may look like in this decentralized organization. I am aware that HR is seen largely as a drain on business goals, but I would argue much of that connotation filters down through legislative requirements. Human resource works can be a boon to a thriving business if managed correctly.
Some Bitcoiners seem to be repulsed by the idea of any collective approach to coordination. For those who feel an aversion to collectivism I would like to propose the following stipulations. The act of coordinating with a group is distinct from identifying with a group. The former is cooperative teamwork, while the latter is an illusory extension of the ego. Any initiative which asks an individual to forgo their personal needs in service of a group will reduce individual liberty. Inversely, any task which aligns personal interest with that of supporting Bitcoin will amplify individual liberty. This consideration is only effective if used on a case by case basis and not as an extension of one’s personal identity with a conceptual group.
To clearly outline the overarching goal of a Bitcoin HR department I define the intent as follows: Supporting the participants in the network to reach their full potential as individuals in service of the network reaching its full potential as a collective. Due to the decentralized nature of this system the traditional thinking around how a department functions will need to be shifted dramatically. For example, there will not be a system in place for legal compliance, hiring, firing, performance review or compensation. Users join and exit the network on an entirely voluntary basis. Users are compensated based on their own behavior in relation to the software. All participants in the Bitcoin ecosystem are free to fulfill the functions of any metaphorical department or none at all. However, in the interest of promoting the resilience of the Bitcoin network, I believe these functions are incentivised to take place because everyone using Bitcoin can benefit from them.
Day One
The first HR function that will be relevant to Bitcoin is that of an onboarding and training process. Onboarding is the process of welcoming a new participant to the organization and directing them to the resources they will need to be successful. Bitcoin.org seems to be an appropriate place to send newcomers, as it is set up for exactly the purpose of making an introduction of the technology.
Every individual has a unique learning style based on their personal history and dispositions. Sometimes there will be resistance in the adoption process due to misunderstanding, misinformation or mistrust. If that is the case, it may be wise to specifically tailor onboarding processes for different people or to suggest specific books based on the unique profile of the person who has made the inquiry. For example, someone who leans towards the conservative side of the political spectrum may be ready to read “The Bitcoin Standard,” while someone who is more progressive may connect more with “The 7th Property,” “Check Your Financial Privilege” or “The Price of Tomorrow.” Reading any of these books will help someone develop an understanding of Bitcoin. Reading all of them will help to hone the ability to suggest books to others. If someone isn’t willing to commit to reading an entire book it may be better to send a blog post, youtube video or specific podcast tailored to their interests.
Over the years I have noticed that most people are not thrilled to talk about Bitcoin if I launch into a rant about it. It is best to wait until they are genuinely curious about it to provide them with valuable information. People typically don’t enjoy being told what to do or pressed into solutions they did not ask for. However, if you can pique their interest without being obnoxious, by all means do so. At the end of the day the biggest attraction to Bitcoin is the “Number Go Up” (NGU) technology. When the time is right, you won’t have to sell Bitcoin to anyone, but the on-boarding process will remain relevant.
I know this is Bitcoin blasphemy, but in my experience it is best not to push too hard on new participants to self-custody or to run a full node. More tech-savvy users will be ready to jump in headfirst, but for the majority of users it is best to wait until they have gotten their feet wet before laying out all the best practices. Bitcoin can be an overwhelming topic to approach and being inundated with a torrent of new information and hardware requirements may do more harm than good. My general recommendation is to put off the self-custody talk until the person you’re working with is holding a large amount of bitcoin that they would not want to lose. This varies between individuals and if someone loses bitcoin because they didn’t self-custody then that is an unfortunate part of their learning experience.
It is extremely easy for newcomers to be drawn into the flashy marketing of centralized altcoin scams. It is important to explain the difference between bitcoin and altcoins early on. Some people need to experiment with altcoins in order to discover that they are garbage. If this is the case I would suggest letting them do so without judgment. Trying to force someone into your worldview is likely to backfire and alienate whoever you are speaking with. That being said, I always reiterate that if someone does not commit to the due diligence to understand Bitcoin, they cannot understand the broader topic of cryptocurrency. In all the hype around NFTs, Web3, ICOs and whatever else is popular this week, there is a tremendous amount of monetary history being ignored.
Unfortunately, searching for “Bitcoin” on Google or YouTube will inevitably pull up a lot of unimportant garbage and scam videos. If you plan to assist someone with the process of purchasing or storing their coins safely it is best to walk them through in person or to select a video series which focuses specifically on Bitcoin. Buying from a more reputable exchange like Cash App or Swan and avoiding any content creators who talk about “crypto” will cut out 90 percent of the scams. Never sending Bitcoin to a wallet you don’t have the keys to will knock out the remaining 10 percent. For privacy sensitive users, choosing an exchange method which does not participate in KYC (Know Your Customer) may be preferable. After someone starts buying Bitcoin it is helpful to check in with them periodically to offer your support in their understanding and gently remind them: “Not Your Keys, Not Your Coins.”
Personal Development
One area in which many organizations outside of Bitcoin seem to fail is that of genuine and continuous support of achieving individual goals. Inversely, it seems that Bitcoin is inherently oriented around genuine and continuous support of achieving individual goals. The clearest personal impacts which result from embracing Bitcoin as a unit of account are that of reducing time preference and of increasing independence. These benefits come with time and study, but gradually they liberate Bitcoin users from the hamster wheel of the continuously debased fiat monetary network. This results in more long-term goals, less stress about future financial security and greater consideration of the long-term implications of decisions.
Development along these lines will take a unique form for each individual, but some themes seem to be emerging. For example, Bitcoiners tend to value natural foods which are nutrient rich, low in chemical processing and sourced from shorter supply chains. I have noticed a number of Bitcoiners on Twitter swearing off alcohol, cigarettes, soda and other addictive substances. I have seen Bitcoiners promoting weight lifting, meditation, sunlight and fresh air. The overarching theme I have witnessed in the Bitcoin community is simply that of liberating oneself to pursue passions which are intrinsically rewarding rather than doing meaningless tasks just to tread water. These trends carry a certain common sense which is often lost under the constant stress of financial insecurity and debt.
The escape from the iron maiden of debt can be a harrowing process. This transition often takes the form of a radical divergence from social norms followed by a new sense of liberation without bounds or direction. Over time I anticipate there will be more direction laid down by the pioneers who crossed the threshold first. For example, it would be wonderful to see an online Bitcoin library emerge which takes BTC donations as votes for various books and documentary films. With a bitcoin-based voting system, articles of the highest value to the network will rise to the top and catch the interest of other participants. The donations could be used to support Bitcoin education globally or to accomplish other tasks which the community votes upon.
The community aspect of Bitcoin is easily overlooked by anyone who hasn’t witnessed the growth of Bitcoin Twitter over the years. Bitcoiners on Twitter frequently ask each other for advice on what products to buy, which to avoid and many other more personal requests. For example, “I am trying to quit smoking, do you have any tips?” Inevitably a question like that pulls in dozens of supportive responses from other Bitcoiners who have had experience in that area. This type of collaboration supports individual development and also benefits the entire network. Best of all, it’s fully voluntary.
These are limited anecdotal examples of what I expect to become normal behavior between Bitcoiners as the network continues to expand. Escaping monetary oppression is just one step in liberating ourselves from the many traumas and bad habits which have resulted from living under a fiat standard.
Bitcoin-centric retreats may also become more common as adoption increases. The Bitcoin conventions are a great start, but I anticipate that they will eventually explode into massive events that are oriented more around education and network expansion than they are about supporting Bitcoiner interests. Wellness retreats for yoga, meditation, plant medicine or permaculture farming would be intriguing to me personally. Those types of experiences enable a deeper form of growth beyond the casual meet and greet circuit. Every place where Bitcoiners meet will bring value to the network and pockets of specific interest will attract a wide variety of users; much in the way that early internet forums manifested.
Another area with which HR is typically interested, is in that of diversity. Rather than focusing on state-directed diversity mandates I would like to focus on the obvious and natural benefits of diversity. Diversity of background, mindset and worldview strengthen creativity and inclusiveness. If bitcoin is, in fact, the best money ever created, diversity will be a natural consequence of its adoption. Bitcoin has a tendency to distribute more equally over time while fiat currencies have been demonstrated to continuously concentrate wealth. It appears that the U.S. and Europe are leading adoption in monetary terms, but from an individual adoption standpoint we are seeing much greater percentages of usage in developing nations. The continued appreciation of bitcoin has the potential to lift millions out of poverty and to unite individuals across the globe into a voluntary decentralized collaboration.
My primary goal in writing this is to promote cooperation and coordination between Bitcoiners because Bitcoin supports freedom and individuality. Demonstrating this type of positive and supportive atmosphere will assist in adoption. I have also found that writing these articles supports non-bitcoin users in understanding the unique nature of the Bitcoin network. There is no CEO, there is no phone number to call and there are no departments. There are only individuals behaving as they see fit. One by one, as we opt out of the system of control that permeates every aspect of society, it will be up to us to build a new vision of human potential.
Conflict Resolution
Living in continuous conflict drains vital energy which could be used for more productive behavior. Improving group cohesion decreases stress and increases personal wellness. Over the years I’ve witnessed a lot of conflict in the Bitcoin community. These conflicts often arise around altcoins, lending systems or false claims about bitcoin usage. I understand the frustration I’ve witnessed and I hold no judgment of it. However, for the practical sake of alleviating conflict I would like to propose a specific methodology which I have worked with extensively.
Nonviolent communication by Marshall Rosenberg is a system of communication which can be used to resolve conflicts at home, at work or between two complete strangers. It constitutes a manner of communicating which is radically different from how most of society functions. In my experience, the learning curve is steep, but the benefit of practice has grown continuously since I started. In order to make an introduction of the material below, I will share one of my favorite quotes from Rosenberg to provide some insight into what he was working towards:
“Life-alienating communication both stems from and supports hierarchical or domination societies, where large populations are controlled by a small number of individuals to those individuals’ own benefit. It would be in the interest of kings, czars, nobles and so forth that the masses be educated in a way that renders them slavelike in mentality. The language of wrongness, “should,” and “have to” is perfectly suited for this purpose: The more people are trained to think in terms of moralistic judgments that imply wrongness and badness, the more they are being trained to look outside themselves — to outside authorities — for the definition of what constitutes right, wrong, good and bad. When we are in contact with our feelings and needs, we humans no longer make good slaves and underlings.” — Marshall Rosenberg
Rosenberg spent most of his career teaching the world what he learned about communication and using it to resolve conflicts between individuals, organizations and countries. His philosophy extended into many aspects of life beyond classical mediation, but was always centered around individual autonomy. He fought an uphill battle his whole life, but the truth in his methodology has made a tremendous impact and continues to grow in adoption. The previous statement could just as easily be applied to Bitcoin.
Now that Bitcoin is offering humanity a potential future in which conflict is no longer profitable, I would like to propose that we support that process by radically reducing conflict on an individual level. Without a doubt, nonviolent communication (NVC) has been the most effective means I have found to reach that goal. The following is a brief introduction to the highlights of the philosophy behind NVC.
Nonviolent communication encompasses a method of connecting with others which is carefully designed to support getting our needs met. When I say needs, I am referring to the basic human needs we all share. Needs like community, autonomy, food, security and love. A more comprehensive list can be found here. Each individual is responsible for getting their own needs met. If your needs are not met it is very unlikely that you will be able to meet the needs of anyone else as you will not feel safe or motivated to do so.
This means that you hold the responsibility to speak up for yourself. No one can do this for you. Rosenberg argued that much of the way we behave and communicate is tragically counterproductive in the pursuit of having our needs met, but that every human action, no matter how helpful or destructive, is always oriented around trying to fulfill needs.
In order to fully connect with our experience of the present moment and to tune in to our needs, the first step is to pay attention to how we are feeling. It is helpful to be able to name those feelings as they arise, because communicating those feelings to others creates a genuine connection. It’s also important to acknowledge feelings as they arise rather than suppress them. It is my belief that much of the psychological tension and mental health issues we are witnessing in the postmodern era are a result of the harmful suppression of what we are experiencing. As you begin to practice this process you may be surprised how frequently people say, “I feel like” followed by something which is not a feeling at all. This is one of many ways in which we routinely disconnect from our experience of the present moment.
There is a radical self responsibility and pragmatism to the NVC process. According to NVC, we are not responsible for other people’s feelings and no one is responsible for our feelings. We are responsible for our interpretations of events and how our reactions make us feel. No person or event outside of ourselves can make us feel anything. Integrating that understanding is a much deeper practice than just reading the statement and agreeing to it. I believe this understanding develops the foundation for finding balance between connection and codependency.
In NVC there are no compromises and there is no forced behavior. By living in NVC I have completely purged the words “should” and “have to” from my vocabulary. Nobody has to do anything. We choose to take action in order to meet our needs. This does not mean that coercion and violence do not exist in the world, but it does create a framework to put an end to these behaviors on an individual level.
I will specify that NVC does not equate to being a permissive doormat. If your needs are not being met you can stand up for yourself as you see fit. The division clarified in NVC is between the restrictive use of force and the use of force to punish others. NVC does not use rewards or punishments to manipulate people. However, incentives are fully valid. The balance between all these factors takes time and practice to understand. There are a lot of important nuances to become conscious of, but over time this manner of communication becomes second nature.
In reading the work of Marshall Rosenberg I can see that he was deeply concerned about individual liberty and peace. At its core, I believe the Bitcoin community has the same values. The description I provided above is only a brief introduction of NVC basics. If you are interested in understanding the full process I would recommend finding a copy of Rosenbergs’s book, watching some of his YouTube videos (don’t let the puppets scare you), or looking for NVC groups near you locally or online.
Learning NVC is much like learning a new language. Reading books and watching videos of people speaking a language can be helpful, but until you speak the language or have it spoken to you, the experience is limited. I believe NVC is a critical component in the process of supporting human flourishing and it has the potential to dramatically improve our relations with our families, our neighbors, our children and even our perceived enemies. If that is of interest to you I encourage you to pursue a deeper understanding of this topic.
Retirement Planning
Many organizations outsource this function to third parties. However, in the bitcoin space this process is integral to the use of the technology. Over the last twenty years stock investments have become increasingly uncertain, inflation has often surpassed bond yields, housing costs have excluded huge portions of the population from home ownership, and the cost of many basic goods has increased continuously. This paints a grim picture for most of the working world and it’s increasingly eating into the livelihoods of those who have retired on fixed income.
The retirement planning support in bitcoin is very simple. In short, buy and hold! However, the nuance around that process is important. The volatility of bitcoin has definitely frightened off a lot of potential investors. However, in any four year time frame the price has historically performed very well. Since January 1 of 2013 (four years after inception) the price has increased from $13.28 to around $20,000 today. That represents an increase of 150,400% and that is measured at a price which is down approximately 60% from its peak last year. For those who fear volatility, I certainly understand that the dramatic price swings are heart wrenching, but that volatility has consistently been beneficial to the upside. There is a good reason for this. Bitcoin is designed to go up.
As many Bitcoiners have discovered, dollar-cost averaging (DCA) is the most consistent method for accumulating bitcoin. Buying in lump sums can be an emotionally challenging experience, especially if the price declines after a large purchase. Waiting for a lower dip to buy has historically been a bad strategy as well. However, if you are buying a set amount of bitcoin each week, or each day, then the price action becomes a lot less frightening. If the price goes up, that’s great because you already own some bitcoin. If the price goes down, that’s also great because you can purchase more bitcoin for less fiat and reduce your average cost. When the timing is out of your hands the experience is much less stressful. This is a typical approach to investing in retirement accounts and, as adoption increases, I anticipate it will become a standard approach to purchasing bitcoin as well.
The benefit of considering bitcoin as a retirement vehicle extends beyond the incredible gains. There are also no requirements or stipulations about how and when you use your bitcoin. There are no penalties for selling before retirement age. Additionally, bitcoin cannot be garnished or frozen and it is not tied to any institution or country. It is truly a global sovereign asset which stands on its own merits.
In order to fulfill the entire spectrum of the aforementioned sovereignty it is important to learn how to manage your own private keys. When you first purchase bitcoin it is stored with the institution you purchased it from. In this way, it is basically the same as any other asset you keep with a bank. You own it on paper, but in order to secure bitcoin fully you will want to learn how to self-custody your coins. This can be done with a number of different hardware wallets, my favorite of which is the Coinkite Coldcard.
This last step represents the largest leap forward in understanding bitcoin. To see for yourself that your bitcoin can be secured using a small device which fits in the palm of your hand and can be transported anywhere on the globe is truly revolutionary. If this device is lost, your private key can be recovered using a recovery seed — a list of 12 to 24 words, which is provided to you by the device when you set it up. If you manage to lose the device and the recovery seed you will lose your bitcoin permanently, so it is important to treat this process with the respect it deserves. It is also wise to learn how to do this yourself. If you trust someone else to do it for you the strength of your security is only as strong as your trust in that individual.
Conclusion
The ethos of bitcoin is about taking responsibility for yourself and not relying on external systems to take care of you. However, as each one of us becomes strong enough to stand on our own, we can also use that strength to lift others up.
I hope this article was helpful in portraying the vision I have of what this impending movement could represent. Contrary to the popular phrase, I will go out on a limb and say that Bitcoin doesn’t fix anything. It merely gives us the tools, incentive structure and autonomy to make the changes we want to see in the world. If Bitcoin can support even a fraction of the changes that I believe it can, we are in for a wild ride to an extraordinary human experience. Who’s with me?
