  • Terabytes of data from phones, computers seized in Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs sex probe

Terabytes of data from phones, computers seized in Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs sex probe

    [ad_1]

Federal authorities possess “several terabytes of electronic data from Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs” and his empire as part of the sex trafficking and racketeering prosecution of the 54-year-old hip-hop mogul who was arrested last month, officials said.

The “voluminous” amount of data taken during discovery in the sweeping sex abuse and racketeering case against Combs was revealed in a letter filed by the U.S Atty. for the Southern District of New York and comes as Combs’ lawyers are making a third bid to get him released from a Brooklyn jail on $50 million in bonds.

The data came from more than 40 electronic devices and five cloud storage services associated with Combs. Prosecutors say they continue to seek even more data as part of the investigation. Combs’ lawyers are pushing back, demanding copies of the seized data.

In a filing with the court, Combs’ legal team also questioned how information from the grand jury indictment of Combs for sex trafficking, racketeering and transportation to engage in prostitution was leaked.

“At some point today, Mr. Combs intends to file a motion for a hearing and other remedies related to unauthorized and prejudicial leaks of grand jury information,” his lawyers noted in the filing.

Combs has been the subject of a sweeping federal probe since at least the beginning of the year and was arrested in New York on Sept. 16.

Combs is accused of using his entertainment empire since as far back as 2009 to lure female victims and use violence, coercion and drugs to get women to take part in what were known as “freak off” parties — elaborate sex performances that often were recorded and sometimes lasted days. Prosecutors allege the music icon’s business network was ultimately about furthering his criminal conduct. Combs has denied any wrongdoing.

Prosecutors informed U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian that during search warrants, Homeland Security Investigations seized “several terabytes of electronic material” from cellphones, laptops, tablets, hard drives, and cloud service accounts as well as business records and physical evidence as part of its investigation into the alleged decades-long sex trafficking and forced sexual acts in the sex parties.

Federal prosecutors say they are still “copying over forty devices and the other five iCloud reports belonging to the defendant, which is expected to take several days due to the volume of the materials.”

Prosecutors told the court that their forensic team is working “expediently as possible since their seizure,” and expects to turn over the data in discovery to Combs’ attorneys “on a rolling basis by the end of the year.”

Combs lawyers, however, say they intend “to ask the Court to require the government to immediately produce certain categories of information – namely, copies of Mr. Combs’ electronic devices that were seized over six months ago.”

“The government also seized additional devices belonging to Mr. Combs at the time of his arrest about three weeks ago,” Combs’ lawyers said in the filing. “We also understand that the government is only now beginning to review and copy these electronic devices, including those that were seized in March 2024.”

Combs’ lawyers reiterated Wednesday said they want a trial as soon as possible. “Mr. Combs continues to assert his right to a speedy trial and intends to request a trial date in April or May 2025,” they told the judge.

The investigation involves more than 50 witnesses and 300 warrants all of which unfolded since last fall, when Combs’ former girlfriend, Cassandra “Cassie” Ventura, filed a lawsuit against him alleging sex abuse and sex trafficking. Combs settled the suit with significant payout within 24 hours, according to his lawyers.

Combs’ legal troubles had been building for months. In civil lawsuits, multiple women have accused Combs of rape, assault and other abuses, dating back three decades.

  • Cate Blanchett Explains Why She’s In The Borderlands Movie

Cate Blanchett Explains Why She’s In The Borderlands Movie

    [ad_1]

It always seemed a bit weird that famed, Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett decided to be a part of the Borderlands live-action movie. Now we know the story of how this odd casting happened and it seems we can blame covid-19.

In May 2020 it was first reported that Blanchett was in talks to star in the upcoming Borderlands movie. Directed by Eli Roth and also starring Jack Black and Kevin Hart, the live-action adaptation of Gearbox’s popular looter shooter series seemed like a strange choice for the renowned actress. What was it about the troubled development of Borderlands and Lilith—her character in the film—that attracted Blanchett? Some theorized she was looking for a big paycheck. Others suggested she was secretly a Borderlands sicko. But the actual truth is that during the pandemic lockdowns, being cooped up and not working started taking a toll on her, and she took the job.

As explained in a new online excerpt from a feature about the Borderlands film in Empire, Blanchett says that she enjoys “crazy” roles that people wouldn’t expect her to take. However, she also suggested a bit of “covid madness” was involved as well.

“I was spending a lot of time in the garden, using the chainsaw a little too freely. My husband said, ‘This film could save your life,’” said Blanchett.

    IGN / Lionsgate

Funnily enough, the previously mentioned report claiming she was in talks to star in the film (which ended up being accurate) was from May 2020, just a few months into the global lockdowns happening due to the pandemic. So this all tracks. Honestly, it makes more sense now that she said yes to Borderlands because she was stuck in her house for months and was losing her mind.

According to Empire, to get prepared for the role Blanchett got a PS5 and started playing the games. She also got “absorbed” into the Borderlands community, looking at cosplayers and super fans online. And hey, she seems to have had a good time making the film, telling Empire: “The gun-slinging stuff was so much fun.” So that’s nice. Now, I wonder if Jamie Lee Curtis—who is also in Borderlands—can similarly blame Covid-19 for taking the role.

Borderlands hits theaters on August 9 and uh…it doesn’t look good.

  • Lydia Deetz Is a TV Horror Host in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Lydia Deetz Is a TV Horror Host in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

    [ad_1]

Turns out the Elvira-inspired intro to the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice trailer is rooted in a new character development for the grown-up Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder).

In a new interview with Ryder in Empire, we learn that after the events of 1988’s Beetlejuice, the goth teen icon known for her deadpan delivery and penchant for ghost photography leaned into her relationship with the dead to “host her own TV series: Ghost House With Lydia Deetz.” We cannot wait to see what that entails, and if it will be a way to explore how the Maitlands might have moved on once they resolved their unfinished business—when alive, they’d longed to be parents; at the end of Beetlejuice, they’re shown to be helping raise Lydia—and crossed over. Original film stars Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin are notably absent from the announced cast list of Warner Bros. upcoming sequel to Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice.

Ryder talked about returning as an older Lydia and reuniting with director Burton along with co-stars Michael Keaton and Catherine O’Hara. “I struggle to find the words,” Ryder told the magazine. “It’s just one of the most special experiences that I’ve ever had. The fact that we’re coming back to it, it’s… It’s beyond.” She also added, “This is a first for me. I’ve never revisited a character, ever.”

From the looks of it, Lydia is that Gen X goth adult whose look may have shifted slightly but remains curated in black with her iconic spiked bangs and smudgy charcoal eyeliner. In the clip of her with the Elvira dress homage, it’s clear Burton is once again paying tribute to how horror hosts evoke that effortless dark demeanor with a bit of camp that younger generations might not get. And it makes sense, because one of the things Burton wants to tackle with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is what happens when the weird goth kid grows up. He put a lot of his personal experience in Lydia’s new story, he told Empire. “The new film became very personal to me, through the Lydia character,” he said. “What happened to Lydia? You know, what happens to people? What happens to all of us? What’s your journey from a gothic kind of weird teenager to what happens to you 35 years later?”

This was key to Ryder’s journey of finding Lydia for the film. “I went through so many stages of, ‘Who is she now?’, but I always wanted to have it be Lydia. She can’t lose who she was,” she said. For one thing, she’s now mom to Astrid (played by Wednesday’s Jenna Ortega) who becomes involved with the summoning of Beetlejuice, bringing back Lydia’s memories of the past but also causing her to reflect who she’s become in the time since: “She can’t be the same person, she can’t be just completely deadpan, she has to have evolved, but she also has to have kept that thing she had when we first met her. So that was the big challenge for me.”

Jussie Smollett Likely Heading Back To Prison As Conviction Is Upheld By Illinois Appeals Court

    Opinion

The disgraced former “Empire” star Jussie Smollett is likely heading back to prison after his conviction for staging a hate crime against himself was upheld by an Illinois appeals court on Friday.

    Smollett’s Conviction Upheld

Court documents show that the conviction was upheld by a 2-1 vote, with Justice David Navarro and Justice Mary Ellen Coghlan agreeing and Judge Freddrenna Lyle dissenting.

“Here, the State’s nolle prosequi of the indictment was not a final disposition of the case,” the court said, according to CNN.

“Therefore, the State was not barred from re-prosecuting Smollett,” the court continued. “After the nolle prosequi was entered, Smollett was free to go without entering into a recognizance to appear at any other time, which is the bargain Smollett made.”

    Smollett Responds

Smollett’s legal team has already filed another appeal with the Illinois Supreme Court.

“We wish to highlight that the decision was divided, with Justice Lyle offering a detailed analysis in favor of Smollett,” Smollett’s representative Holly Baird told Fox News.”We are preparing to escalate this matter to the Supreme Court, armed with a substantial body of evidence.”

Special Prosecutor Dan. K. Webb praised the appeals court for upholding the decision.

“As the appellate court noted, Mr. Smollett ‘challenge[d] virtually every aspect of’ the prosecution, and the appellate court correctly rejected each and every one of those challenges,” Webb said. “Today’s decision is a validation of Winston & Strawn’s tireless work on this matter and a resounding victory for justice. We are proud to have prevailed in a case that, we believe, can help restore the public’s confidence in the Cook County justice system.”

    Smollett’s Conviction

Back in 2021, Smollett was found guilty by a jury on five of the six charges of disorderly conduct after a nearly two-week trial. This came after Smollett claimed in January of 2019 that he was jumped by two men who hurled racist and homophobic attacks at him while also shouting “this is MAGA country.” After investigating Smollett’s claims, police concluded that he had allegedly staged the attack in the hopes of securing himself a higher salary on “Empire.”

Smollett was later sentenced to 150 days in jail following the conviction. He was additionally sentenced to 30 months felony probation, restitution to the city of Chicago in the amount of $120,106 and a fine of $25,000.

Smollett continued to proclaim his innocence after being sentenced.

“I did not do this, and I am not suicidal, and if anything happens to me when I go there, I did not do it to myself, and you must all know that,” he said at the time.

Smollett reported to jail on March 10, 2022, but he was released six days later pending his appeal. The Illinois Supreme Court will now decide whether or not to hear Smollett’s case, and if his conviction isn’t overturned, he will have to serve out the rest of his 150-day jail sentence.

Many feel that Smollett tried to play off the racial and political divides in this country for his own personal gain. Do you think Smollett belongs in prison? Let us know in the comments section.

New York Empire State, Philadelphia Fed factory indexes mixed but show signs of optimism

The numbers: Two U.S. regional gauges of manufacturing sentiment showed signs in June that they may be improving after a rough patch, according to data released Thursday.

The Philadelphia Federal Reserve’s manufacturing index slipped further to a reading of negative 13.7 in June from negative 10.4 in the prior month, but economists had expected a reading of negative 14.8, according to a Wall Street Journal survey of economists. This is the tenth straight negative reading.

New York Empire State factory gauge drops sharply in January signaling deep contraction in activity

    [ad_1]

The numbers: The New York Fed’s Empire State business conditions index, a gauge of manufacturing activity in the state, tumbled 21.7 points to negative 32.9 in January, the regional Fed bank said Tuesday.

This is the lowest level since the worst of the pandemic in May 2020 and among the lowest levels in the survey’s history, the regional Fed bank said.

Economists had expected a reading of negative 7, according to a survey by The Wall Street Journal.

Any reading below zero indicates contraction.

Key details: The new orders index fell 27.5 points to negative 31.1 in January. Shipments fell 27.7 points to negative 22.4.

The indexes for prices paid and prices received moved lower.

The employment gauges were also weak.

Firms expect little improvement in coming months, with the futures index at 8.

Big picture: The Federal Reserve’s steady increase in interest rates is having a slowing impact on capital spending as firms are scaling back investment, economists said. Demand for goods is also slowing after two strong years on the weak global economy. Added to the mix is the strong dollar which makes U.S. exports more expensive.

The market pays attention to the Empire State index because it is seen as a early read on the national ISM manufacturing index to be released early next month.

The ISM factory index contracted in December for the second straight month, falling to 48.4% from 49% in the prior month.

Looking ahead: “Manufacturing conditions in the U.S. are deteriorating and the worst is likely ahead,” said Gurleen Chadha, economist at Oxford Economics.

‘Empire’ Co-stars Grace And Trai Byers Are Expecting A Baby

    [ad_1]

Former “Empire” co-stars and married couple Grace and Trai Byers are expecting a baby together.

Grace Byers shared the news with a photo posted on Instagram on Friday. The actor is seen cradling her belly in the picture alongside her husband. They were celebrating Trai Byers’ debut on Broadway for the opening night of August Wilson’s “The Piano Lesson.”

“Words absolutely fail when it comes to describing how deeply and overwhelmingly proud we are of you,” she captioned the photo.

The two met on the set of the Fox TV show “Empire,” which ran from 2015 to 2020. They tied the knot in 2016.

The Byers received a lot of love and support in the post’s comments section.

“Congrats, you two!!! I saw the glow in your face before I saw you holding the bump!!!” actor Yvette Nicole Brown wrote.

In July, Trai Byers shared a sweet tribute to his wife on her birthday, writing that their love is a “once in a generation.”

“What a vision, to behold you. I love you with every part of me, known and unknown,” he wrote. “You are a magnet that draws all of my love, and I release into the gravitational pull of you.”
