  • Caltech astrophysicist fatally shot on porch in Antelope Valley; suspect charged with murder

    An accomplished Caltech astrophysicist with more than four decades of research contributions in galactic astronomy and the study of distant planets was fatally shot in a rural area of Antelope Valley on Monday morning. A suspect in the shooting has been charged with murder.

    Deputies responded to a 911 call for assault with a deadly weapon in the unincorporated community of Llano at 6:10 a.m. and found a man suffering from a gunshot wound on the front porch of a home, according to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

    The victim was later identified as Carl Grillmair, 67, according to the L.A. County medical examiner. His death was ruled a homicide caused by a gunshot wound to the torso.

    While investigating the shooting, deputies arrested a suspect in a carjacking that took place nearby, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

    That suspect was later identified as Freddy Snyder, 29. He was charged Wednesday with the murder of Grillmair and carjacking. He was also charged with first degree burglary related to a Dec. 28 incident, according to court records.

    He is currently being held in lieu of $2 million. It is unclear what relation, if any, Snyder had with Grillmair.

    A spokesperson for Caltech confirmed that Grillmair was employed as a research scientist at the university.

    He worked at the university’s Infrared Processing and Analysis Center, known as IPAC, which partners with NASA, the U.S. National Science Foundation and researchers around the world to advance the exploration of the universe.

    His work has focused on uncovering the structure of the Milky Way and identifying faint stellar streams and substructures that make up the galactic halo surrounding our spiral galaxy, and helping reshape our understanding of how galaxies evolve, according to his website.

    He has been awarded substantial observation time as a principal investigator on the Hubble Space Telescope and the Spitzer Space Telescope, and his research has earned him numerous accolades including a NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal.

    His hobbies included cycling, hiking, helicopter skiing, general aviation with a specific interest in sailplanes and ultralights, waste reduction and clean energy and large dogs, according to his website.

  • High-speed chase of homicide suspect ends in suicide near LAX, police say

    A suspect fleeing a homicide scene in Camarillo led authorities on a high-speed chase Saturday night before dying by suicide near Los Angeles International Airport.

    The suspect, whose identity had not been released Sunday morning, reached speeds exceeding 100 mph, pulled off the 405 Freeway near Imperial Highway, then stopped and sometime later took his own life, Ventura County Sheriff’s Sgt. Chris Zapata said.

    The incident began shortly before noon Saturday when deputies responded to a report of a shooting in the 400 block of Walker Avenue.

    Deputies attempted life-saving measures on a man with gunshot wounds, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, Zapata said.

    The suspect was located in his vehicle and took flight, heading south on the 101 Freeway. The California Highway Patrol was preparing to take over the pursuit but lost visual contact with the fleeing vehicle, Zapata said.

    The suspect was then sighted on the southbound 405 before pulling off and coming to a stop.

    A spokesperson for the LAPD said the investigation was being handled by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department. Zapata said Sunday morning that no further information on the suspect or victim was available.

  • Man sentenced for throwing Molotov cocktail at deputies during protest against immigration raids

    A man was sentenced four years in federal prison Friday after he admitted to lighting a Molotov cocktail and throwing it at Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies during a protest last year against immigration raids.

    Emiliano Garduño Gálvez, 23, pleaded guilty in October to one count each of possessing an unregistered destructive device and obstructing law enforcement during a civil disorder. Federal authorities said Gálvez is an immigrant from Mexico in the U.S. illegally, having entered more than a decade ago and staying beyond the time permitted in his visa.

    “This defendant’s reckless behavior threatened the lives and safety of law enforcement officers and that of a lawful protester,” Bill Essayli, the first assistant U.S. attorney for the Central District of California, said in a statement. “My office remains steadfast in its efforts to prosecute and punish those who commit acts of violence against others.”

    The events occurred in June, when Border Patrol agents convened near Home Depot in Paramount, drawing protesters.

    According to the U.S. attorney’s office, the group threw objects like rocks and cinder block chunks at federal and local law enforcement officers, and set off fireworks. Authorities declared the protest an unlawful assembly.

    The U.S. attorney’s office said Gálvez was hiding behind a stone wall when he lit and threw a Molotov cocktail toward sheriff’s deputies, who were engaging in crowd control. The incendiary device landed in a grassy area near a protester’s foot, about 15 feet from sheriff’s deputies. Gálvez then fled the area.

    Federal prosecutors had argued in a sentencing memorandum for Gálvez to serve a longer sentence — more than seven years — because of the seriousness of his offenses. Video recordings appear to show that the flaming wick separated from the bottle after he threw it.

    “Defendant endangered everyone — law enforcement and civilians in the area — and is lucky that, despite his actions, no one was injured,” the prosecutors’ sentencing memo said.

    Gálvez’s federal public defenders asked for a more lenient sentence of three years, saying in a sentencing memo that he was “caught up in a historic social movement and under the influence of Brandy and nitrous oxide,” and now “readily admits and acknowledges how serious his actions were and the harm that could have ensued.”

  • Former Illinois Deputy Sentenced To 20 years In Prison For Killing Sonya Massey – KXL

    SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — A former Illinois sheriff’s deputy was sentenced Thursday to 20 years in prison for fatally shooting Sonya Massey, who had dialed 911 to report a possible prowler outside her Springfield home.

    Sean Grayson, 31, was convicted in October in a police brutality case that prompted protests over systemic racism and led to a U.S. Department of Justice inquiry. Grayson, who is white, received the maximum possible sentence. He has been incarcerated since he was charged in the killing.

    He apologized during the sentencing, saying he wished he could bring Massey back and spare her family the pain he caused. His attorney had asked for a sentence of six years, noting that Grayson has late stage colon cancer that has spread to his liver and lungs.

    “I made a lot of mistakes that night. There were points when I should’ve acted, and I didn’t. I froze,” he said during the hearing. “I made terrible decisions that night. I’m sorry.”

    Massey’s parents and two children — who lobbied for the maximum sentence — said their lives had changed dramatically since the killing. Her two children said they had to grow up without a mother, while Massey’s mother said she lived in fear. They asked the judge to carry out justice in her name.

    “Today, I’m afraid to call the police in fear that I might end up like Sonya,” her mother Donna Massey said during the hearing.

    ‘It rocked the country’

    Grayson’s attorneys had pushed for a new trial, which Judge Ryan Cadigan dismissed at the start of the hearing.

    In calling for the maximum prison term, State’s Attorney John Milhiser argued that Massey would still be alive if the police department had sent someone else to respond.

    “Sonya Massey’s death rocked her family, but it rocked the community, it rocked the country,” State’s Attorney John Milhiser said. “We have to do whatever we can to ensure it never happens again.”

    When the judge read the sentence, the family reacted with a loud cheer: “Yes!” The judge admonished them.

    After the hearing, Massey’s relatives thanked the public for the support and listening to their stories about Massey.

    “Twenty years is not enough,” her daughter Summer told reporters.

    The day of the shooting

    In the early morning hours of July 6, 2024, Massey — who struggled with mental health issues — summoned emergency responders because she feared there was a prowler outside her Springfield home.

    According to body camera footage, Grayson and sheriff’s Deputy Dawson Farley, who was not charged, searched Massey’s yard before meeting her at her door. Massey appeared confused and repeatedly said, “Please, God.”

    The deputies entered her house, Grayson noticed the pot on the stove and ordered Farley to move it. Instead, Massey went to the stove, retrieved the pot and teased Grayson for moving away from “the hot, steaming water.”

    From this moment, the exchange quickly escalated.

    Massey said: “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus.”

    Grayson drew his sidearm and yelled at her to drop the pan. She set the pot down and ducked behind a counter. But she appeared to pick it up again.

    That’s when Grayson opened fire on the 36-year-old single mother, shooting her in the face. He testified that he feared Massey would scald him.

    Convicted of downgraded charges at trial

    Grayson was charged with three counts of first-degree murder, which could have led to a life sentence, but a jury convicted him of the lesser charge. Illinois allows for a second-degree murder conviction if evidence shows the defendant honestly thought he was in danger, even if that fear was unreasonable.

    Massey’s family was outraged by the jury’s decision, raising questions of racial injustice.

    “The justice system did exactly what it’s designed to do today. It’s not meant for us,” her cousin Sontae Massey said after the verdict.

    After the shooting

    Massey’s killing raised new questions about U.S. law enforcement shootings of Black people in their homes. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump negotiated a $10 million settlement with Sangamon County for Massey’s relatives.

    The case also generated a U.S. Justice Department inquiry that was settled when the county agreed to implement more de-escalation training; collect more use-of-force data; and forced the sheriff who hired Grayson to retire. The case also prompted a change in Illinois law requiring fuller transparency on the backgrounds of candidates for law enforcement jobs.

Sheriff Rick Staly said this may have been related to a sexual assault under investigation in saint Johns County, allegedly involving Hairston. “The fifteen-year-old was aware of this information and told Hairston, and it appears that they concocted a plan to lure the 11-year-old to this rural area in Flagler county and then kidnap him and hold him,” Staly said. “Now what they were going to do after that we don’t know…”According to the arrest report, at one point, Hairston told him, “he could cut his throat right now, or he could be respectful and shoot him in the head, front or back.” “Told us that he thought they were going to kill him,” Staly said of the 11-year-old.According to information from the Sheriff’s Office, the victim was held at the campsite for multiple days and forced to hide on the floorboard of Hairston’s truck, covered by a blanket, during travel.Search warrants executed on Hairston’s vehicle, his Hastings residence, and the campsite—with assistance from the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office—recovered evidence consistent with the child’s statements, including duct tape, video surveillance equipment, and weapons.Detectives determined that Hairston was aware the child was missing and endangered, but could not provide a motive for keeping the child from his parents.Sheriff Rick Staly commented, “Clearly, thanks to ‘see something, say something’ and our deputies recognizing the victim was very afraid, we rescued a missing child who was in fear Hairston had planned to kill him.”The investigation remains active and ongoing. One of them had just purchased a firearm and let’s go out half drunk and fire into the ground. AND WHEN THEY GOT ON SCENE, THEY FOUND A 17 YEAR OLD BOY HAD BEEN SHOT. HE WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL WHERE HE DIED. THE SHOOTING FOLLOWS A SEPARATE SHOOTING ON CHRISTMAS EVE THAT ALSO TOOK THE LIFE OF ANOTHER 17 YEAR OLD BOY, AND A SHOOTING ON CHRISTMAS DAY, WHERE A 15 YEAR OLD BOY SHOT AND KILLED A 13 YEAR OLD GIRL AND TOLD DEPUTIES IT WAS ACCIDENTAL.     Deputies responded to a shooting call in the 1500 block of 26th Street at approximately 9 p.m.

    Once on the scene, deputies found the teenager with a gunshot wound. He was transported to a hospital where he later died, according to the report.

    A 20-year-old was taken to the hospital after an Orange County deputy returned fire while serving a search.The sheriff’s office says deputies from the felony unit were stationed near the 2200 block of Buchanan Bay Circle around 9:40 p.m. Friday doing surveillance of a homicide suspect.Deputies were preparing to serve a DNA search warrant in a murder that happened earlier this week, when the suspect and a 20-year-old man exited the house.They say the 20-year-old opened fire at the deputies, hitting an unmarked vehicle, while the suspect tried to run back into the residence.A deputy returned fire, striking the 20-year-old shooter.Deputies rendered aid until paramedics were able to get to the scene and transport the man to the hospital, where he underwent surgery. Deputies say he will face charges for the shooting.The suspect in the homicide case was quickly detained and was questioned by detectives later Friday evening.No deputies were injured in this shooting.As is standard procedure, the deputy who fired his weapon is on temporary, paid administrative leave pending the initial FDLE review.
