Many might be feeling the weight of superhero fatigue. The quantity of superhero films is exceeding the quality of those movies. Out of all the heroes, the only one that seems exempt from that feeling is Deadpool 3, now officially titled Deadpool & Wolverine. Fans are extremely excited about the return of the Merc with the Mouth. We will get to see Ryan Reynolds back in Deadpool’s iconic red suit. Not to mention it will also be the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine (in a comic book-accurate costume!) It will also be the official entry of the X-Men (and all the other beloved mutants) into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There’s a lot to be excited about.
Now that Deadpool & Wolverine has a trailer out and several minutes of footage screened at CinemaCon 2024, details have started to come out about the film, including its villain. We know that Deadpool and Wolverine will team up to help save the multiverse from a threat, and Emma Corrin (The Crown, My Policeman) is reportedly playing the role of the villainous Cassandra Nova. Cassandra is a majorly powerful villain in the X-Men comic books, with a complicated history and a wicked personality.
Here’s everything we know about Cassandra Nova!
Who is Cassandra Nova?
Created by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, Cassandra Nova first appeared in New X-Men #114 (2001). Cassandra is called a “Mummudrai” by the Shi’ar. This means she is the exact equal and polar opposite of another person. In her case, Cassandra’s opposite is her twin brother—the ultra-powerful Professor Charles Xavier, leader of the X-Men. Yes, Charles Xavier was a twin. And it just gets weirder from there! Even as a fetus, Xavier was apparently so powerful that he had consciousness and thought. In the womb, he felt the evil of his twin and tried to kill her with his psychic powers.
The battle caused early labor (!?) and the doctors believed Cassandra to be stillborn. But this is the comic book universe where no one ever truly dies, so Cassandra used her mental powers to rebuild her cells until her body was restored. After she was whole, Cassandra used her abilities to seek revenge against her brother and anyone else who crosses her path. Being the antithesis of Charles Xavier without his compassion sets her up to be a great villain for the MCU. Besides her powers, her convoluted and strange origins are something that only Deadpool could make work.
In the story arc of the limited X-Men Red (2018) series, Cassandra is featured as the main villain. Tapping into racist hate breeding online, Cassandra builds a “hate machine” to make her more powerful. Although the series can be a little heavy-handed at times, it is one of my favorites. Everything Jean Grey and her team through at her doesn’t seem to work. They finally defeat her by injecting her with empathy, so she can feel the pain of the world rather than fuel the anger. Laura and Gabrielle Kinney (my favorite Wolverine clones) play a major part in taking down Cassandra. Cassandra’s plan in X-Men Red would fit well in Deadpool & Wolverine, using real-world drama, but ratcheted it up for an over-the-top supervillain. And maybe that means Wolverine’s clone kids will be entering the MCU right alongside their “dad.”
Has Cassandra already entered the MCU?
With X-Men ’97 currently streaming on Disney+, there has been speculation that Cassandra is already in the MCU—but not onscreen quite yet.
Episode 5 of X-Men ’97, “Remember It,” adapts a storyline from the comics in which the mutant nation of Genosha is destroyed by sentinels. In the comics, Cassandra is the one pulling the strings and ensuring Genosha’s demise. Could the same be true in X-Men ’97? If so, could Cassandra’s appearance in the series pave the way for her live-action debut in Deadpool & Wolverine?
We’ll have to wait and see!

The trailer for Deadpool & Wolverinehits the Super Bowl (in between a musical trailer and one for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes which I think Wade Wilson would love). But one of the things that the trailer established is that Wade is seemingly fighting the TVA?!
What we get to see in the trailer is Wade Wilson/Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) getting pulled into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So if you wondered how that was going to work, don’t be. But what is fascinating is that the Time Variance Authority (TVA) seems to be bringing Deadpool into the fold of the MCU by making him a hero. Or at least that’s how it starts when Matthew Macfadyen recruits Wade into our beloved heroes in the Disney canon.
In 2016, Ryan Reynolds‘ first Deadpool movie scored a huge marketing touchdown at the Super Bowl when using the weekend of the big game to hold a number of promotional events, culminating with a final trailer spot released during the showdown between the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers.
Two weeks later, the irreverent R-rated pic turned into a box office sensation and launched a new superhero franchise for 20th Century, which was later bought by Disney, home of Marvel Studios. If you’re the betting kind, odds are good that Marvel and Disney will use this year’s Super Bowl on Feb. 11 in Las Vegas to drop the first trailer for its untitled Deadpool threequel, which hits theaters July 26 in North America. And don’t be surprised if the mercurial Reynolds — also a proven marketer — suits up himself in some fashion.
The legacy Hollywood studios have long used TV’s most-watched live event of the year to advertise their upcoming wares, but have cut back notably in recent years because of soaring costs. This year, CBS is charging $7 million for a 30-second spot, according to numerous reports. A popular option is the official pregame show, where it can cost half as much to buy time for a movie ad.
Studios are being coy as to their Super Bowl plans this year, although those who are ponying up the big bucks are certainly pleased that the Kansas City Chiefs, who will go up against the San Francisco 49ers, provide an added bonus in terms of ratings because of Taylor Swift, who is dating Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce (her presence at games this year has resulted in a notable spike in female viewership).
There’s also a Deadpool connection; Reynolds and his wife, Blake Lively, are friends of Swift’s and have attended Kansas City games this season.
The spot for Deadpool 3, directed by Shawn Levy and co-starring Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, is likely to air during the game, but Disney’s declining comment on any and all plans. Another Disney movie that could be advertised on Sunday is 20th Century’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The reboot stomps into cinemas May 10.
Paramount, whose sister network CBS is carrying the game, is sure to advertise Bob Marley: One Love — which opens on Valentine’s Day — A Quiet Place: Day One and IF, directed by John Krasinski and starring Reynolds (not a typo). In the past, Paramount has often used the pregame.
Universal will have a big presence as well. The studio is believed to have bought time for summer event pics Fall Guy starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, Twisters and Illumination’s Despicable Me 4, as well as spring tentpole Kung Fu Panda 4, from DreamWorks Animation.
Warner Bros. and Sony appear to be sitting out Super Bowl Sunday entirely. Instead, Warners advertised its upcoming March tenptole Dune: Part Two during the AFC and NFC championship games on Jan. 28.
2023 was a great year for movies, but we’ve spent enough time talking about 2023. We’re done with her. It’s time to think about 2024 and all the new movies we can’t wait to see.
The new year is an opportunity to wipe the slate clean. For cinephiles, it’s a brief period of optimism; a chance to really mean it when we say we’ll keep up with new movie releases. And I do mean it, just like I mean it every year. Following the WGA and SAG strikes of 2023, the trades are predicting fewer new movie releases, which may very well be true. But there are still plenty of new movies hitting theaters this year for us to get worked up over—even if the year looks a little front-loaded at the moment.
Mean Girls (January 12)
(Paramount)
Despite not being marketed as such, Mean Girls is indeed a musical. Based on the Broadway production, which in turn is based on the 2003 comedy (which was based on a book!), Mean Girls features Renee Rapp reprising her stage role as Regina George alongside returning star and screenwriter Tina Fey. The new ensemble also includes Angourie Rice, Avantika Vandanapu, Bebe Wood, and Ashley Park. –Britt Hayes
The Book of Clarence (January 12)
(Sony Pictures Releasing)
LaKeith Stanfield actually has two movies hitting theaters on January 12: action-thriller The Beekeeper, co-starring Jason Statham, and The Book of Clarence. We’re a little more stoked for the latter, a biblical-era dramedy and the second film from Jeymes Samuel (a.k.a. British singer-songwriter The Bullitts). Stanfield plays the titular role, a man struggling to make ends meet for his family when he decides to follow in Jesus’ footsteps—at first as a scheme, but we know how these things turn out. –BH
The Kitchen (January 19)
(Netflix)
We all want to know what a Barney movie directed by Daniel Kaluuya will look like, and The Kitchen might give us something of an idea. Kaluuya makes his feature directing debut alongside Kibwe Tavares with this dystopian sci-fi set in a version of London where social housing is eliminated. Starring Jedaiah Bannerman, Kano, and Hope Ikpoku, The Kitchen looks like a real conversation starter. –BH
Miller’s Girl (January 26)
(Lionsgate)
Another one sure to get people talking is Miller’s Girl, an indie thriller that evokes the erotic thrillers and dramas of the ‘90s. Jenna Ortega stars as a college student who becomes intimately involved with her professor (Martin Freeman) during a creative writing assignment. After last year’s Fair Play, we’re eager to see another movie that navigates the complexities of gendered power dynamics. This one comes to us from first-time feature filmmaker Jade Bartlett, and gives Ortega a chance to explore her range. –BH
Argylle (February 2)
(Universal Pictures)
What is Argylle? No one knows. We’ve seen trailers for it. Maybe. We know it stars Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, John Cena, Samuel L. Jackson, and Dua Lipa. And also there’s a cat? Matthew Vaughn’s latest is, according the synopsis, about a novelist (Howard) whose books about a dashing spy (Cavill) begin resembling the actual doings of a real spy organization. It sounds a little like Le Magnifique, the wacky 1973 French film starring Jean-Paul Belmondo. –BH
Lisa Frankenstein (February 9)
(Focus Features)
It’s written by Diablo Cody. It’s the feature directorial debut of Zelda Williams (daughter of the late Robin). It stars Kathryn Newton and Cole Sprouse. It’s a Frankenstein riff set in the ‘80s. It’s called LISA FRANKENSTEIN for crying out loud. What more could you possibly need here? –BH
Madame Web (February 14)
(Sony Pictures)
We’ll finally get to see what happened when he was in the Amazon with her mom when she was researching spiders, right before she died! Madame Web is Sony’s latest attempt to expand its Spider-Man universe, this time with actual Spidey-people instead of villains and antiheroes people may or may not care about. (That said, I am so down for Venom 3 and the return of The Brock Report.) Starring Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, and Isabela Merced, Madame Web is a Valentine’s Day movie, apparently, because girls? –BH
Drive-Away Dolls (February 23)
(Focus Features)
The first solo effort from Ethan Coen (of the Coen Brothers), Drive-Away Dollsis an exciting film for a number of reasons. One, we’re getting Pedro Pascal in a Coen movie, but we’re also seeing a female-centric story from the filmmaker. Centered on Jamie (Margaret Qualley) as she goes through a break-up and her friend Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan), who’s helping her through it, the trailers make Drive-Away Dolls look like a return to the Coen antics we’ve come to love over the years. Getting to see Ethan Coen shine on his own (as Joel Coen has already done) is exciting! –Rachel Leishman
Dune: Part Two (March 1)
(Warner Bros.)
While I was tempted to mount a Jan. 6 on Warner Bros. to liberate Dune: Part Two from the vault (no jury would convict me), I’m glad I decided to remain a free woman so that I can see Denis Villeneuve’s epic sequel in a movie the-a-ter. Timothée Chalamet, fresh off Wonka, returns as ostensible chosen one Paul Atreides, leading the Fremen (including love interest Chani, played by Zendaya) in a revolt against the corrupt forces of the galaxy. –BH
Love Lies Bleeding (March 8)
(A24)
Rose Glass’ follow-up to the haunting Saint Maud is Love Lies Bleeding, a romantic thriller starring Kristen Stewart as Lou, a gym owner who gets it bad for bodybuilder Jackie (Katy M. O’Brian). Come for the lesbian crime thriller that’s giving off Bound vibes, stay for scary Ed Harris with a skullet. –BH
Imaginary (March 8)
(Lionsgate)
Last January, Blumhouse introduced us to M3GAN, who briefly became the Mariah Carey of horror. This year, Blumhouse seems to be hitting the same sweet spot (or trying to) with Imaginary. DeWanda Wise plays a woman who returns to her childhood home to discover that her imaginary friend is so pissed at her for moving away and growing up that it possesses the body of a teddy bear to get revenge. Sounds wild, let’s go. –BH
The American Society of Magical Negroes (March 22)
(Focus Features)
Actor and comedian Kobi Libii makes his directing debut with The American Society of Magical Negroes, which imagines a world in which the tired racist trope is crucial to the functioning of society. Justice Smith stars as a young man recruited by the eponymous society, comprised of Black people with magical abilities, each assigned to help a white person navigate life. Co-starring David Alan Grier, Aisha Hinds, Rupert Friend, and Nicole Byer, The American Society of Magical Negroes looks hilarious and maybe a little sweet, too? –BH
Mickey 17 (March 29)
(Warner Bros.)
Three years after sweeping the Oscars with Parasite, Bong Joon-ho is finally back, and this time he’s returning to the science fiction genre. Based on a novel by Edward Ashton, Mickey 17 is set in the future, and stars Robert Pattinson as a worker clone sent on a mission to help colonize the ice world Niflheim. Not that you should need more reasons to watch after that description, but Director Bong’s latest co-stars Mark Ruffalo, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Steven Yeun. –BH
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (April 12)
(Warner Bros.)
Legendary’s MonsterVerse gets a little bigger with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which brings back director Adam Wingard for the ultimate showdown. Two titans enter the ring (which is our planet, btw) and duke it out for … actually, I don’t really know why they’re fighting. This seems like an intersectional situation where they need to realize that people have been pitting them against each other and that they should just team up and kill us already. –BH
Civil War (April 26)
(A24)
Alex Garland is best known for dark, genre-bending sci-fi (Annihilation, Ex Machina) and horror (28 Days Later, Men), which makes his latest film something of a curiosity. Civil War is set in an imminent future in which the United States has dissolved into warring political factions, and follows the journalists (led by Kirsten Dunst) covering the conflict. Civil War might be Garland’s most ambitious film in more than one aspect; his work, while relatively grounded, doesn’t typically deal in current events. It also reunites the filmmaker with Devs stars Nick Offerman, Cailee Spaeny, and Stephen McKinley Henderson, and co-stars Wagner Moura and Jesse Plemons. –BH
Challengers (April 26)
(Amazon MGM Studios)
The minute we learned what Challengers is about, we were hooked. A movie in which Zendaya is married to Mike Faist but also sort of being in a throuple with Josh O’Connor? We’re in. Yes, there is tennis involved, but okay, whatever. The new Luca Guadagnino film was written by Justin Kuritzkes, the partner of Celine Song (who wrote and directed Past Lives, leading plenty of people to make comparisons to their relationship). There are just a lot of things going on with Challengersthat make it exciting, and we’ve been hyped about it since last summer! –RL
The Fall Guy (May 3)
(Universal Pictures)
What is better than Ryan Gosling behind the wheel of a car? Ryan Gosling as a stuntman—yes, again, but this time it’s funny. The Fall Guyis giving “What if Drive was sort of light-hearted and maybe a bit like The Nice Guys?” and I’m not exactly mad about it. Starring Gosling and Emily Blunt, we can just pretend like this is another Barbenheimer right? Written by Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3, Hotel Artemis), directed by David Leitch (John Wick, Atomic Blonde), and sort of based on the TV series of the same name, The Fall Guy has me stoked to see Ryan Gosling in a car again. –RL
Back to Black (May 10)
(Focus Features)
Amy Winehouse was a once-in-a-lifetime talent, with a soulful voice and indelible songwriting to match. Her life and her career were far too brief, cut short by painful struggles with addiction and an eating disorder, which exacerbated the pressures of fame and the demands of her work. Some of this was explored in the documentary Amy, which drew the ire of the late singer’s father, Mitch Winehouse, who felt he was unfairly represented. Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, Back to Black stars Industry‘s Marisa Abela as Amy Winehouse, whose estate cooperated with the production. While that means we’ll get to hear Winehouse’s music in the film, there’s a chance it might not dig as deep as some of her fans would like. All the same, Abela is fiercely talented and definitely looks the part, Taylor-Johnson is a fine director, and as a Winehouse fan, I’m eager to see how Back to Black shakes out. –BH
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (May 24)
(Warner Bros.)
George Miller’s long-developing Fury Road follow-up is finally upon us. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (that title couldn’t be more studio-mandated if it tried) features Anya Taylor-Joy in the title role and explores her life before Max—when a younger Furiosa was taken from the Green Place of Many Mothers by the sinister Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) to the Citadel, where she begins plotting her liberation. As far as I’m concerned, George Miller can do whatever the hell he wants. If Furiosa is half as good as Fury Road, we should count ourselves lucky. –BH
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (May 24)
(20th Century Studios)
In the tradition of the classic Planet of the Apes films, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes centers on a new main character, Noa (Owen Teague), a chimpanzee disillusioned by the apes’ corrupt leader, Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand) and his oppression of other apes. Set 300 years after the events in Rise, Dawn, and War for the Planet of the Apes, Kingdom is directed by Wes Ball (the Maze Runner series), and seems to be good enough to land him a gig directing the live-action Legend of Zelda movie for Nintendo. –BH
Ballerina (June 7)
(Lionsgate)
I’m absolutely torn on Ballerina. On the one hand, John Wick is an incredible franchise and Ana de Armas is inarguably talented and fun to watch. On the other hand, Ballerina—potentially the first in a series of John Wick spinoff movies—was directed by Len Wiseman, a guy with an underwhelming track record (Underworld, Live Free or Die Hard, Total Recall remake) that does not gel with the dynamic action of the Wick movies. THAT SAID: the ballerina assassin lore teased in the third Wick movie was like catnip to me, and if this thing is good, we might have a solid substitute for the Black Widow movie we should’ve gotten. –BH
The Watchers (June 7)
(Head of Zeus)
We’re getting two Shyamalan movies this year. Ishana Shyamalan, daughter of M. Night, is making her feature directing debut with The Watchers, based on the novel by A.M. Shine. Starring Dakota Fanning and Georgina Campbell, the horror film centers on an artist who gets stuck in a cabin in an Irish forest with three strangers and must contend with the mysterious creatures that stalk them each night. –BH
Inside Out 2 (June 14)
(Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)
Remember when a bunch of adults cried in a movie theater over Inside Out? Well, now we can do that again with Inside Out 2! Pixar is back with Riley and all the emotions in her head and this time, she’s got a new one: Anxiety (voiced by Maya Hawke)! As someone who very much wishes I had Inside Out when I was growing up, I can’t wait to see what the sequel has in store for Riley and how I will embarrass myself again in a theater, sobbing over a movie for children. –RL
Twisters (July 19)
(Warner Bros.)
What’s better than the 1996 film Twister? A sequel with Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Anthony Ramos. The original film starred Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt as part of a crew of scientists and storm chasers working together to launch Dorothy (a data-gathering device). What we’re getting with Twisters is a direct sequel to the film, and look, great. I don’t care what happens, it’s a sequel to Twister. We’re so in. –RL
Deadpool 3 (July 26)
(Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)
Logan (Hugh Jackman) dealing with Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is how our love of Reynolds as Deadpool began, so we are very excited for Deadpool 3. Any time there is a new Deadpool movie, we’re gifted with whatever nonsense Ryan Reynolds is up to, and we’ve been getting a whole bunch of treats because he is truly on one with this movie. Still, it’s just fun to know that Wade and Logan are back in action, and we can’t wait to see what director Shawn Levy and Co. have in store for us, especially now that Deadpool belongs to Disney. –RL
Trap (August 2)
(Carlos Alvarez, Getty Images)
M. Night Shyamalan’s latest co-stars his other daughter, Saleka Shyamalan, alongside Josh Hartnett and Hayley Mills (yes, of The Parent Trap fame). We know pretty much nothing about Trap, which isn’t likely to change until we see a trailer in the next few months. Speaking with NME, Shyamalan described it as “very unusual and very new compared to what I’ve been trying to do (recently).” The filmmaker has been on one heck of a run since returning with The Visit, and I can’t wait to see whatever the hell he’s up to with Trap. –BH
Alien: Romulus (August 16)
(20th Century Studios)
The latest installment in the Alien franchise comes from Fede Álvarez, the filmmaker behind Evil Dead (2013) and Don’t Breathe, and stars Cailee Spaeny and Isabela Merced. Spaeny recently revealed that Alien: Romulus is set between Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979) and James Cameron’s Aliens (1986). Will Álvarez’s film bridge the differences between the two, sort of like Doctor Sleep did with the Stephen King and Stanley Kubrick versions of The Shining? That’s my only hope. Well, that, and more practical xenomorphs. –BH
Kraven the Hunter (August 30)
(Sony Pictures)
Am I the one person in this world determined to love and support Kraven the Hunterno matter what? Yes. That’s okay. Directed by J.C. Chandor (Triple Frontier), Kraven promises to bring to life one of Spider-Man’s greatest foes: Sergei Kravinoff (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). Famously, Kraven loves animals but also is a hunter (hence the name). How that is going to work without Spider-Man will be interesting, but I am just so excited to see my boy in live action that I don’t even care! Kraven is coming! –RL
Beetlejuice 2 (September 6)
(Warner Bros.)
We don’t need to relitigate the ups and downs of Tim Burton’s career, but suffice it to say, the visionary director has a little something to prove with Beetlejuice 2. But with Michael Keaton back as the ghost with the most and Winona Ryder reprising her role as Lydia Deetz (every goth girl’s platonic ideal) alongside Jenna Ortega, I’m optimistic for what this sequel could be. –BH
Saw XI (September 27)
(Lionsgate)
It’s wild that it took seven films for the Saw franchise to figure out how to course-correct the grievous error of killing off its main antagonist in the third film. Saw X was such a damn good time that I am fully back on the Saw hype train. Saw XI was almost immediately greenlit, and I can’t wait to see what silly prequel-sidequel-inbetweenquel nonsense is in store. –BH
Joker: Folie à Deux (October 4)
(Warner Bros.)
If you told us that we’d be excited about Joker: Folie à Deux after so many of us didn’t like the first Joker movie, I wouldn’t believe you. And yet I truly cannot wait to see Joker: Folie à Deux. I’m going to blame the Harley Quinn-and-Joker of it all. Todd Phillips’ sequel to Joker features Lady Gaga as Harley and is said to be a musical—all elements that make me increasingly more excited about this. –RL
Venom 3 (November 8)
(Sony Pictures)
I have but one request for Venom 3: Bring back The Brock Report. We need to see Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock back in VICE reporter mode, maybe with a little help from his sidekick and number one tater tot fan Venom. Venom 2 was a surprising success that managed to overcome the clownery of the first film’s post-credits teaser and deliver a superior sequel. With Venom 2 screenwriter Kelly Marcel back on board and also sitting in the director’s chair, we’re sure to get a little more of that goofy, gloopy magic. –BH
Gladiator 2 (November 22)
(Universal Pictures)
Ridley Scott is on a roll. The 86-year-old filmmaker is following up 2023’s Napoleon with another historical epic—a sequel to his own Gladiator, released in 2000. This time, Scott’s courting the fan girls with Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Denzel Washington, and Fred Hechinger. Just make a wall calendar, why don’t you! –BH
Wicked Part One (November 27)
(Universal Stage Production)
Wickedis being split into two parts, which means Part One will (probably) end with Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) singing “Defying Gravity” and leaving us gooped. So why are we excited? Because it is Wicked. For the record, Wicked does rule even if I do think it is an overrated musical. But with Jon M. Chu at the helm and a cast that includes Ariana Grande, Michelle Yeoh, and Bowen Yang, I can’t help but look forward to this one. –RL
Nosferatu (December 25)
(Focus Features)
The big holiday treat this year is Nosferatu, a new iteration of F.W. Murnau’s silent horror classic from Robert Eggers, the filmmaker behind The Witch and The Northman. Eggers’ retelling is set in 19th-century Germany and follows a young woman tormented by the ghastly vampire who is obsessed with her (relatable). Nosferatu stars Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe (but of course), Nicholas Hoult, Emma Corrin, and Bill Skarsgard as—who else?—the vampire Count Orlok. –BH

Deadpool 3 has resumed filming, and set photos are coming out! The latest batch of pictures shows the long-awaited Dogpool, along with another mutant joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Note: these photos reveal possible spoilers for Deadpool 3. Some photos going around X (formerly Twitter) contain a MASSIVE spoiler that I’m not posting here, so peruse social media at your own risk.
After months of speculation amid the work stoppage caused by the recently ended SAG-AFTRA strike, “Deadpool 3” is being delayed by the Walt Disney Company. The comic book threequel has vacated its May 3, 2024 release date and is now set to hit theaters on July 26, 2024.
It’s one of several moves that Disney announced on Thursday evening, as the studio rejiggers its theatrical release slate. “Deadpool 3” is now claiming the slot previously occupied by “Captain America: Brave New World,” which has been pushed to Feb. 14, 2025. Additionally, Marvel’s “Thunderbolts” has moved from Dec. 20, 2024 to July 25, 2025 and its upcoming “Blade” reboot has shifted from Feb. 15, 2025 to Nov. 7, 2025.
Beyond Marvel, Disney has also delayed its upcoming prequel to its 2019 CGI remake of “The Lion King.” “Mufasa: The Lion King,” directed by Barry Jenkins, has moved from a July 5, 2024 date to Dec. 20, 2024. Additionally, the studio has vacated two other dates — July 25, 2025 and Nov. 7, 2025 — which it had planted flags on for unspecified features.
When the SAG-AFTRA strike first began in July, “Deadpool 3” was forced to suspend production. Now after nearly four months in limbo, Marvel Studios is planning to kick back into high gear, with filming set to get up and running before Thanksgiving break. However, chatter of a potential delay had been in the air for weeks as the actors strike stretched into the fall. Now, “Deadpool 3” represents the only Marvel Studios film scheduled to hit theaters in 2024 — a big swerve as the banner regularly unleashes three or four features a year.
While “Deadpool 3” still has a fair amount of production to complete, it’s notable that “Captain America: Brave New World,” which will see Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson take on the Marvel mantle, has already completed principal photography. Nonetheless, it is now facing a seven-month delay. Meanwhile, “Thunderbolts” and “Blade” have yet to mount production at all.
The decision for “Deadpool” to leave its May release date now leaves a sizable crater in next year’s summer blockbuster line-up. The first weekend of May is prime real estate for studios, usually representing a big kick-off for the season. Marvel has laid claim to the frame in recent years with titles like “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”
Curiously, Disney still has another tentpole set for May, with 20th Century Studios’ “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” slated for the 24th of the month, opening against Warner Bros.’ “Mad Max” spin-off “Furiosa.” But with “Kingdom” still sticking to its original date as opposed to moving up three weeks, it seems likely that some other studio will swoop in to claim the first days of May.
As it stands, the first high-profile film of the season is now set to be Paramount’s “IF,” a fantasy film directed by John Krasinski and, coincidentally, also starring Ryan Reynolds.
Allegedly Marvel Studios will delay Ryan Reynolds Deadpool 3 and replace the release date with Captain America 4.
Next year Marvel is set to ramp up their Cinematic timeline and build up the next installments of the Avengers franchise. Reportedly Ryan ReynoldsDeadpool 3 will be a major building block for the MCU and feature the return of Hugh Jackman. Jackman will once again dawn the Wolverine monicker alongside his real-life bestie. Fans have waited years for the film to release and it is set to arrive on May 3, 2024.
According to ScreenRant, the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike may cause the movie to be delayed once again. However, the film has wrapped principal filming, and small reshoots are all that’s left. So it’s a small chance the delay could be avoided.
Furthermore, Insiders suggest we will see several of the former Fox Marvel characters in the film.
The film could be the cameo-heavy movie leakers claimed Dr. Strange would be. The film hasn’t officially been delayed but the rumors also suggest Marvel has a solution to keep the May 2024 release date. Anthony Mackie’s upcoming outing in his first solo Captain America film could replace Deadpool 3. Captain America: Brave New World starring Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford is allegedly done filming and could be ready to go by May. From COVID-19 to actor strikes Marvel hasn’t caught a break in a very long time.
Additionally, If we see a few more delays we might not get the next Avengers movie until 2030.
Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness reconciled to celebrate the actor’s 55th birthday at The Polo Bar, Ralph Lauren’s first restaurant in New York, on Thursday night, October 12, Page Six reported. Despite the former couple unexpectedly announcing their separation in September this year, after 27 years of marriage, they stepped out to celebrate Jackman’s birthday. As per Page Six, the actor had a ‘very happy’ meal together with friends and family alongside his estranged wife.
Hugh Jackman celebrates his birthday with his estranged wife
“Very happy time [had] by all,” a source revealed to Page Six, “Think it was a good birthday.” Later, Hugh’s rep also confirmed: “Yes, it’s true. It was a lovely evening.”
The Marvel star turned 55 and celebrated his first single birthday after almost 3 decades. He also shared his picture on Instagram where he’s holding an enjoyable drink and posing for the camera. Sharing the photo, the Wolverine fame expressed his gratitude to fans and thanked them for the ‘birthday love’. He wrote, “Thank you ALL for the birthday love!!! I’m reading your messages, seeing the special videos and experiencing all the feels.”
The Wolverine star’s post was flooded with birthday wishes and love from friends and his fans. Taking to the comments section, Michael B. Jordan wrote, “HAPPY BORN DAY!!!! May the universe keep blessing you!”
Prior to the birthday post, Hugh posted another picture of when he was young. He captioned it: “I was maybe 17. I was the assistant (to the assistant) of the footy team. #throwbackthursday” In response to the same, a fan jokingly wrote, “You had the Wolverine in you before you became one.”
Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness’s relationship timeline
On the set of the television show Corelli in 1995, the two Australian actors first crossed paths. The following year, on April 11, 1996, the couple was married. The pair had a special message written in Sanskrit on their wedding rings, which read- “Om paramar to the mainamar,” meaning: “we dedicate our union to a greater source.” They share two children Oscar Maximilian and Ava Eliot.
However, on September 23, the duo announced their divorce in a joint statement that they shared with People. The statement read: “We have been blessed to share almost three decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage. We greatly appreciate your understanding in respecting our privacy as our family navigates this transition in all of our lives. This is the sole statement either of us will make.”
Meanwhile, the actor was last seen in the movie Prisoners which was released on September 20, 2013. He is all set to star in Deadpool 3 alongside Ryan Reynolds as well.
Shawn Levy is speaking out on rumours that he might be taking the reins on the highly-anticipated “Avengers: Secret Wars”.
The director sat down with ET Canada’s Cheryl Hickey to discuss his new Netflix series based off the Pulitzer Prize winning book, “All The Light You Cannot See” during TIFF 2023.
Asked whether he is aware of rumours attaching him to the upcoming blockbuster, Levy coyly replied, “I read that rumour, and that’s all I’m gonna say.”
Levy also shared an update on “Deadpool 3”, revealing that the film is currently “paused from shooting”, meaning that they’ve been “working on editing”.
The Canadian filmmaker went on to praise both “Deadpool” actor Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, who will reprise his role as Wolverine for the third installment in the superhero franchise.
“[Ryan] and Hugh Jackman are two actors who – long before this moment – I felt, they see what I do. They see me,” he shared.
Insisting that “Deadpool 3” will stay “grounded” now that it has become part of the MCU, Levy added, “Ryan and I decided very early, people love ‘Deadpool’ obviously because it’s funny. Above everything else, it’s funny. It’s raw, it’s a little gritty. It’s not trying to be slick or too polished. It’s definitely not aliens fighting in space environments, it’s real-world grounded. So, we decided that we were gonna shoot the vast majority of this movie outside in the world. We don’t want it to look like set-extensions on sound stages.”
Taylor Swift all the way back into the wonderous world of 2016, dressed up as the foul-mouthed superhero, Deadpool for Halloween. But that shouldn’t really come as a surprise as Deadpool was one of the biggest superhero movies of 2016. In fact, it was the world’s first introduction to the anti-hero Wade Wilson. The film made headlines when it premiered becoming one of the highest-rated projects of the year, so it was evident, as Halloween approached, who people’s number-one costume choice was going to be. The difference between Swift and the rest was that the singer’s costume was more authentic.
Ryan Reynolds lent his actual Deadpool costume to Taylor Swift
Donning the attire of Ryan Reynolds’ renowned superhero persona from his movie Deadpool, the now-33-year-old dressed up in the full suit along with the iconic red and black mask. Even though the Deadpool costume was insanely popular in 2016, it was Swift alone who had the privilege of sporting the actual outfit worn by Reynolds in the movie. The Anti-Hero singer had taken to her Instagram to thank the star for lending her, his costume, she wrote, “Thanks @vancityreynolds for this costume, you’re the BEST deadpool inside contact ever,” alongside posting a picture of herself dressed in the whole ensemble, with her whole squad. Swift’s close friend and Reynolds’ spouse, Blake Lively was so impressed with the whole look that she wrote in the comments, “#HusbandUpgrade”
The two have been friends since 2015, and they still maintain a very close bond till date. Though Taylor Swift is recognized for her group of friends, there are two individuals within her close-knit circle with whom she shares a particularly strong bond, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds. The Better Than Revenge singer is so integrated into the couple’s lives, that their children affectionately address her as Aunt Taylor. Following her recent split from Joe Alwyn, the 33-year-old temporarily paused her highly anticipated Eras tour to enjoy some valuable moments in New York City with the Lively and Reynolds.
Meanwhile, how the singer and actress became friends, might tickle some people’s bones. Back in 2014, Blake paid tribute to Swift’s Bad Blood song, but many fans took it as a diss, to which the Gossip Girl actress replied hilariously. She wrote on her Twitter, “Umm whoever thought I was throwin shade clearly doesn’t know I have a ‘Taylor Swift Please Be My Wife Voo Doo Doll.”
Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have been entertaining fans for over a decade with their ongoing faux feuds.
Since the two met on set of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”, they’ve grown to become close friends, giving fans countless reasons to laugh as their beef continues to escalate to date.
According to Jackman, here’s how the pair’s online flame war began.
“I met [Reynolds] back on [‘X-Men Origins] Wolverine’, and I used to ream him because I was very close friends with Scarlett [Johansson], and Scarlett had just married Ryan, so when he came on set I was like, ‘Hey, you better be on your best behaviour here, pal, because I’m watching,’ and we started ribbing each other that way,” he told Daily Beastback in 2020.
“And then it all escalated with the ‘Deadpool’ thing and him calling me out, and trying to manipulate me through social media to do what he wanted,” he continued, referring to how Reynolds wanted him to appear in the franchise. Nonetheless, Reynolds’ manipulative tactics seemed to work because the two are now set to star opposite one another again in “Deadpool 3”, which Reynolds confirmed back in September.
Despite their hateful scheming, the two still manage to cheer each other on in between their back and forth banter. From epic prank wars to online trolling, we’ve rounded out the best of Reynolds and Jackman’s faux beef.
Battle Of The ‘Deadpool’ Body Training
The latest rivalry between Jackman and Reynolds began when the latter poked fun at Jackman’s defined physique, captioning a gym picture on Instagram, “Keeping Up With The Jackmans.” When ET Canada’s Morgan Hoffman caught up with Reynolds at the 2023 Canadian Screen Awards, the Canadian star joked that he’s “trying” his best when it comes to training for the eagerly anticipated sequel.
“Hugh Jackman is a beast…He’s clearly obsessed with his own body,” Reynolds said. “So, keeping up with someone who’s that diligent is going to be challenging.”
To this, Jackman playfully replied on Twitter: “More like petrified. Have you seen you?”
In January, Jackman intended to kick off the new year with “a positive message,” but revealed in an Instagram video that “recent events have made that impossible,” referring to news that Reynolds’ “Spirited” track “Good Afternoon” had been shortlisted by the Academy for an Oscar nom in the Best Song category. He begged the Academy not to give his friend an Oscar nom because it would make his life “insufferable,” despite calling it an “absolutely brilliant” song.
Reynolds re-posted Jackman’s video, writing, “Good Afternoon to you, Mr. Jackman,” referencing how when people in “Spirited”- a modern adaptation of “A Christmas Carol”- say “good afternoon,” it actually means “f**k you.” Those who understood the classic Charles Dickens reference found Reynolds’ caption very amusing, including his “Spirited” co-star Octavia Spencer who commented, “Y’all crack me up!”
Reynolds further reacted to Jackman’s video by putting his friendly rivalry aside to cheer for his frenemy instead. He led the charge for “The Son” actor’s nomination for the 2023 Academy Awards, saying that he “loved” Jackman’s performance in the flick, calling it “one of the best of his entire career.”
“There’s zero sarcasm here,” he joked.
Good Luck Prank
Reynolds took his pranking game up a notch with a hilarious gift for Jackman before the opening night of The Music Man on Broadway In February 2022. The actor sent the Broadway star two large framed photos of himself: one of Reynolds mid-air in a musical theatre fashion, and a sketch of himself staring intensely with his arms crossed. The photos came with a note from the actor: “Hugh, good luck with your little show. I’ll be watching.”
Jackman shared his candid reaction in a post to Instagram:
Failed Sweater Memo
During the 2018 holiday season, Jackman teamed up with Jake Gyllenhaal to prank his pal, Reynolds, at a Christmas party.
The “Deadpool” star shared a photo on Instagram of himself next to the fellow actors, however, Reynolds showed up in an over-the-top Christmas sweater while Gyllenhaal and Jackman were in regular attire.
“These f**king a**holes said it was a sweater party,” he captioned the pic.
Nonetheless, Reynolds ended up turning the hilarious holiday prank into a fundraiser to raise money in support of Toronto children’s hospital, SickKids.
Reynolds Disses Jackman’s Fanbase
In 2017, while Jackman was promoting “Logan” in Beijing, he shared a photo of himself posing with fans, to which Reynolds replied: “Pretty sure those are protesters.”
Keeping his mock feud with Reynolds alive and well, in 2016, Jackman took to social media to honour Reynolds receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame by impersonating his frenemy via a thank you speech.
In the video, Jackman pretended to be the “Free Guy” actor by simply covering his face with a cut-out of Reynolds’ face. He threw jabs at the actor’s credentials including his 2010 People’s Sexiest Man Alive cover.
“How could a guy who failed his high school drama class be this talented?” Jackman hilariously questioned Reynolds’ achievement.
“Feel free to urinate on my section of the sidewalk,” he concluded.
A year prior, Reynolds seemingly began the impersonation war when he gave his best impression of Jackman, complete with the Australian accent, in a video of himself sporting a filter that makes him look old.
“Hugh Jackman here. Just reminding you to get your votes in for People‘s Sexiest Man Alive,” he says in the clip, mocking Jackman’s 2008 cover.
Jackman shared the video to his Instagram account with the caption: “Presenting … ME by HIM. @vancityreynolds.”
The playful feud between “Deadpool 3” co-stars Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds continues as they get into shape for the upcoming Marvel film.
On Friday, Jackman took to Instagram to share a photo of himself flexing with a dumbbell alongside his fitness coach Beth Lewis. The 54-year-old actor tagged Reynolds, 46, in his gym pic with the caption: “He’s only 46. I’m older. But it’s not a competition.”
Jackman’s post follows a photo shared by Reynolds’ trainer Don Saladino last week, in which Reynolds was seen lifting two 60 lbs. barbells, one in each hand. The “Free Guy” actor shared the snapshot of his large muscles to his Instagram Story, joking that he was “training to spend several moths” with Jackman, “who’s not as nice as everyone thinks.”
Jackman teased Reynolds right back by reposting his story, adding a “Ur cute” heart-shaped sticker.
Now, Reynolds is playing off of Jackman’s latest post.
The Canadian star shared his colleague’s post to his story, alongside a sassy message.
“Kay. I’m drinking milk,” Reynolds wrote.
Ever since Jackman and Reynolds announced back in September that Wolverine will be in the highly-anticipated “Deadpool 3”, the actors have been playfully feuding online, mimicking that of their respective characters’ Wolverine and Deadpool. At the time, Jackman revealed that the two superheroes “are opposites” and are going “to hate each other” in the Marvel sequel.
Walt Disney Co announced on Tuesday it will be pushing back the release dates for numerous upcoming Marvel films including, “Blade,” “Fantastic Four” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.”
Following “Blade” director Bassam Tariq’s departure from the project in September due to scheduling conflicts, Marvel has decided to temporarily shut down production of the film to search for a new director. “Blade” is now slated to premiere on Sept. 6, 2024 instead of Nov. 3, 2023, which has impacted the rest of the studios’ production scheduling.
“Deadpool 3” has moved from Sept. 6, 2024 to Nov. 8, 2024; “Fantastic Four” has been shifted from Nov. 8, 2024 to Feb. 14, 2025; an untitled Marvel project was moved from Feb. 14, 2025 to Nov. 7, 2025; “Avengers: Secret Wars” has been pushed from Nov. 7, 2025 to May 1, 2026; and an untitled Marvel movie went from May 1, 2026 to no longer being on Disney’s release schedule.
A source familiar with the studio’s plans told Reuters that Marvel is using the “Blade” production break to find a replacement for Tariq to work with “Moon Knight” writer Beau DeMayo, who’s the main screenwriter for “Blade.”
An unnamed source with authority on the film starring Oscar winner Mahershala Ali told The Hollywood Reporter that “They want to get it right,” which subsequently means delays.
The Marvel Blade character who first appeared in comic book “The Tomb of Dracula,” written by Marv Wolfman in 1973 eventually had his own storyline that was later adapted into the Wesley Snipes film trilogy which includes, “Blade,” “Blade II” and “Blade Trinity.”
Throughout the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse, stories have been intertwined and a significant delay from one film often impacts the slate for others. A similar postponement was made for the film “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” due to the pandemic and led to “Thor: Love and Thunder” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” being pushed back as well.
