  • Pedro Pascal may be saving the day for Todd Haynes’ gay romance film | The Mary Sue

    Remember when Todd Haynes was set to direct a film that centered around a gay couple, played by Joaquin Phoenix and Danny Ramirez? And then Phoenix dropped out days before shooting? Well, not all hope is lost. Pedro Pascal might be stepping up.

    The film, titled De Noche, has been dead in the water for the last year after Phoenix left. It was rumored that he got cold feet over the explicit sexual content between his character and Ramirez’s character in the film. And while many have said that the film should just recast his role, it does seem like that is, a year later, what is finally going to happen.

    In an exclusive to Deadline, it was revealed that Pascal may be taking it on and that they would begin filming in the beginning of 2026 in Guadalajara, Mexico and work around Pascal’s schedule to get the film done. Both Ramirez and Pascal are in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and both are part of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday so it would theoretically shoot around their commitments there.

    Killer Films producer Christine Vachon has, in the past, dismissed the rumors about Phoenix’s reasoning for dropping out of the project but there is no clear reason why he was reportedly a “no show” right before production began. But if Pascal is to take over the role, it will be exciting because fans of Haynes’ work have been waiting for his next project and De Noche already had buzz prior to the pause.

    It is not yet confirmed that Pascal will take the role but the fact that the film is back on the table is a good thing and it is going to be exciting to see Ramirez shine in a Haynes’ film. Recently, Haynes got buzz for his film May December and has given us iconic movies such as I’m Not There, Carol, and Velvet Goldmine.

    Since 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie has popped up as former pilot (and Steve’s ever reliable bestie) Sam Wilson. Last we saw Sam, he’d finally accepted his role as the new Captain America in The Falcon & the Winter Soldier, which was all the way back in 2021.

    Next year, Sam will headline his first solo film in Captain America: Brave New World, which follows on from that miniseries. Talking to Radio Times, the actor acknowledged he was fond of working on that show, which paired him with Sebastian Stan’s ex-cyborg assassin Bucky Barnes. “I was actually excited to do a second season, just so me and Sebastian can get paid to hang out,” he stated. “Because it’s like me, him and Daniel Brühl [as Zemo]. It’s kind of like the perfect storm of happiness. […] Anything I can do to hang out with a dancing Daniel Brühl makes me very happy.”

    Brave New World’s full cast hasn’t been officially revealed, but Mackie confirmed neither Bucky or Zemo will be popping up here. (Bucky will be featured in Thunderbolts while Zemo’s next appearance is a big question mark.) Since FalconSoldier is a fairly key part of Sam’s evolution, he’s admitted headlining a movie without those two doesn’t entirely feel the same. “When they decided to go back to the movies, it is what it is, but I don’t have my friends anymore. It kind of dampens it a little bit.”

    Major supporting characters often pop in and out of the MCU a somewhat regular cadence—see Hawkeye and Jane Foster as two of many examples. There are some, though, who feel like they should be around more often than they are, and their absence often highlights how much a particular entry isn’t entirely working. There’ll be some familiar faces in Brave New World (like Danny Ramirez’s Joaquin Torres), but given how FalconSoldier ended with the promise of Sam and Bucky as a dynamic duo, it’s a bit of a shame we won’t get to see that play out on the big screen.

    Captain America: Brave New World is expected to hit theaters on February 14, 2025.

    2020’s The Last of Us Part II is a revenge story built around two sides: that of Ellie (as played in the show by Bella Ramsey) and newcomer Abby (Kaitlyn Dever). Both women have their own respective supporting casts, and the HBO adaptation has mainly cast the folks in Ellie’s social circle like Dina and Jesse.

    According to Variety, HBO’s managed to lock down four actors who’ll play the people in Abby’s friend group. Top Gun: Maverick’s Danny Ramirez will play Manny, described as a“loyal soldier whose sunny outlook belies the pain of old wounds and a fear that he will fail his friends when they need him most.” Spencer Lord (Riverdale) is Owen, Abby’s ex who’s “condemned to fight an enemy he refuses to hate.”

    Rounding out the quartet are Ariela Barer (Runaways) as young doctor Mel and Tati Gabrielle (Mortal Kombat II) as Nora, a fellow medic “struggling to come to terms with the sins of her past.” In the game, Ellie travels across Seattle to get revenge on all four characters, and eventually Abby. Even with whatever changes are in store, that’ll likely remain the same with the show; it’ll just also flesh out those characters, similar to what it’s already done with Bill. At the moment, there’s two other people on Abby’s “side” is casting is still secret: Yara and Lev, a pair of siblings she meets in her travels.

    The Last of Us season two is expected to drop on HBO sometime in 2025.
