    Now that we’re in the wake of Taylor Swift’s epic release of The Tortured Poets Department anthology, other artists have gathered the courage to release music yet again…I mean, the album literally broke every Spotify record in the book- already surpassing 1 billion streams in five days, she has the most streamed song and album in a single day. You get the point.

    But now, you’ve replayed the album sufficiently and you’re ready for new music. I know, we’re all insatiable when it comes to streaming new tracks. It’s why fans of other artists are lamenting that their faves don’t release as often as Swift. If, say, Billie Eilish or Harry Styles started releasing more frequently alongside Swift, we’d have a lot of work to do…my playlists would grow endless.

    Every Friday, I like to compile a list of the hottest new hits released that day so you know which songs to listen to. Whether you’re heading into the weekend ready to party, or need to get some spring cleaning done and need a soundtrack…there’s a song on my Weekend Playlist for everyone.

    And yes…our playlists are now available on Spotify! So all you need to do is press play and let the music take you away from your laptops and into your weekend.

    So, without further ado, let’s get listening!

    Chris Lake, Sammy Virji, Nathan Nicholson- “Summertime Blues”  

    We are no strangers to the technical genius of Chris Lake here at Popdust. He has the power to hop on collaboration tracks and make a hit…which is exactly what happens in “Summertime Blues.” An instant house classic that will smoothly transition you from spring to summer.

    Every warm weather season needs its essential techno house track, and it looks like we already have it. “Summertime Blues” transcends the listener to a club somewhere far away, maybe in Ibiza. It’s an instant classic- bouncy, sunny, heavy on the bass. A perfect blend of Virji, Lake, and Nicholson. Chef’s kiss.

    R3HAB, Jason Derulo- “Animal” 

    Jason Derulo and R3HAB team up for the ultimate collaboration: “Animal.” With Derulo’s smooth vocals and R3HAB’s production talent, you’ll be playing this song over and over. If you want a song with sexy lyrics, Jason Derulo’s famed voice, and R3HAB’s ability to meld any track into gold, this one is for you.

    This is the fourth collaboration for the now iconic duo, and it shows. “Animal” is a product of two powerhouses in their respective genres who know how to make a hit. Combining sounds isn’t always easy, but R3HAB and Derulo make you think it is.

    Mabel- “Vitamins” 

    Mabel delivers a hard-hitting R&B track with “Vitamins.” Perhaps my favorite song on the playlist this week, Mabel reminds you that she’ll be good for you. It’s reminiscent of R&B greats like Mary J. Blige and Ashanti, with all the soulful vocals and heartfelt passion that only Mabel can convey in her music. It’s easy listening, a slow burn that keeps shining from start to finish. About the track she says,

    “This is my family and friends’ favorite song out of all the music I’ve made over the past couple of years. It’s a reminder to the man I love to take care of himself but also that in difficult times I’ll always be there in his corner. I dedicate the record to my uncle David Cherry who passed during the making of this song. He was a musician and I felt him guiding me musically during the session, to be braver and bolder with my songwriting.”

    The Scarlet Opera- “Catch Me If You Can” 

    The Scarlet Opera delivers an empowering symphony of guitar and keys with “Catch Me If You Can.” It’s your dose of rock-and-roll combined with a mixture of badass lyricism, an intoxicating chorus, and a whole lot of infectious melodies. The Scarlet Opera’s message is that they have their stuff figured out, and they’re not letting anyone stop them.

    “We don’t really believe in revenge, but we do believe in epic destiny. We’re fortunate that those who have and continue to doubt us, hold little space in our hearts– this record will act as a constant reminder that we’re in control. Catch us if you can!”

    Justice, Tame Impala- “Neverender” 

    A Tame Impala track is essential for warm weather. Teaming up with the all-encompassing French touch DJ, Justice, the duo delivers a solid track in “Neverender.” Upbeat, well-paced, and catchy, this song will get you through the weekend seamlessly.

Now, one of the legendary electronic duo’s more recent releases gets a fresh remix from a house music veteran.

    UK House maestro Chris Lake has just released his blistering new remix of “No Reason.” Taking the funk and rhythm of the original as well as the iconic bassline, Chris Lake takes a retro sounding track onto the modern dancefloor. The Chemical Brothers original rendition is a wonderful track, but the Chris Lake remix really makes it feel like a modern dancefloor heater.

    In 2010, Matthew Handley and Andrew Stanley came together over their love for multi-cultural music and sounds, combined it with their disc jockey prowess, and delivered us perhaps one of the most iconic debut tracks of all time: “We No Speak Americano.” It was an instantaneous smash hit, selling over 5 million copies and topping the charts worldwide.

    “We No Speak Americano” with DCUP under their label, Sweat It Out, was unlike anything we’d heard in the disco-funk dance world. It sampled the 1956 Italian classic, “Tu Vuò Fà L’Americano” by Renato Carosone and, like all good tracks, made it into its own unique experience. It was the song that won them a 2010 ARIA for “Best Dance Release”, and certified them as exciting beat-makers and collaborators who had loads to offer.

    A once-in-a-lifetime duo, Yolanda Be Cool went on to release albums like
    Ladies + Mentalmen and Je Suis Music, which re-introduced listeners to electro swing mixed with house that made you genuinely want to dance. The pairing stole the hearts (and ears) of fans and new listeners alike by combining all of your favorite parts of EDM- tribal tech, minimalism, house, disco- and blending them seamlessly together.

    They’re industry risk takers, who were so inspired by Chris Lake’s style that they tapped into their craft to create the hit “Segunda” for him. You may see them touring performing B2B sets alongside fellow Australian native FISHER, where attendees rave about the high energy setting and consistent flow of jam-worthy beats. Never slowing down, Yolanda Be Cool continued to take it a step further with their new record label, SWEATRZ.

    PD: You both came together over your love of Brazilian music. Can you talk a bit about that story?

    We’ve always just loved quirky music and baile funk is a perfect example of this. Matt lived in Brazil for a year and came back broke and Andy had lots of good DJ gigs and hooked Matt up and then we just started playing together….so you could say Matt’s broke-ness from a year in Brazil brought us together 🙂


    PD: How did that love inspire your big track, “We No Speak Americano?”

    Well…..Americano is obviously in Italian, which is a Latin language, as is Portuguese so there’s that but i think more to the point… we saw the opportunity to take such an iconic original sample from the 1950’s in Italy and flip it in a way that would make sense for modern dancefloors. When we sent it to our Italian DJ friends, they thought it was funny and told us how their grandma used to play the song to them in the kitchen when they were kids.

    PD: You’re under a new label, Sweatrz Records, and you’ve released your new track “Hip Trumpets” with KVISION! Has being under a new label changed anything about your production process or the music you’re making?

    Well….we started SWEATRZ with our buddy Paluma to have an outlet for the more raw underground side of house music. We still have Sweat It Out and Club Sweat and have music coming on both and we also love working with other labels like Black Book and Club Bad. We basically just jump in the studio and make whatever’s inspiring us….and then we think of the label to send it to after based on what labels we think would dig it.

    PD: You created “Segunda” for Chris Lake. What was the collaboration process like between you all?

    Well..we played with Chris in Seattle last year at the Black Book party and we loved how eclectic his set was and set the goal of making a song that was true to our sound, but would go off in his sets. When we finished Segunda we sent it straight to him and he loved it. We worked on the breakdown a bit more off the back of his feedback and then he gave it the greenlight and we were stoked.

    PD: More recently, you’ve been performing B2B’s with FISHER. What can fans expect from those sets?

    Well, we’ve always jumped around with our DJ sets because we love so much music but artists and producers and labels we’re loving right now go from the more minimal tech stuff like Rendher and Kidoo to more house-y 90s kinds stuff like Jansons and Sally C to the more tribally tech stuff from people like Andruss, Harvy Valencia and Marco Lys with labels like Solid Grooves, PIV, Black Book and Hot Creations always providing the goods of course along with SWEATRZ, Club Sweat and Sweat It Out.

    PD: What are your favorite songs to perform live?
    Well, we love playing and testing out the stuff we’ve been working on in the studio. We have a collab with Paluma right now that’s coming out on SWEATRZ soon and it goes off so we’ve been loving playing that. It’s called “Get Into It” and rocks. Also loving Mele’s new single Jozi to the D.

    PD: What’s next for you this year?

    We have a bunch of shows in Aus and the US and stopping by Amsterdam for ADE which is always exciting. Then we have heaps of new music coming on the labels including the single we mentioned with Paluma which we’re really pumped on.

He has no problem finding ways to innovate house music, constantly churning out hit track after hit track, collaborating with some of the biggest names in the industry, and giving us the soundtracks to many nights out on the dance floor.

    His success is a result of his mastermind in the production studio, curating beats and sounds and blending them with strong vocals to give us hits like “Turn Off The Lights”, “Delirious” with Steve Aoki and Kid Ink, and even remixing Portugal The Man’s “Dummy.” He’s a prolific career includes a GRAMMY nomination, several #1 hits, and a repeat name on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, and he’s showing no signs of slowing down soon.

    He’s had a busy year- touring across the globe and performing at some of the biggest festivals and selling out two nights at the Brooklyn Mirage, doing B2B sets with fellow house-dominator FISHER, even debuting their Under Construction brand…where they design their own stages and perform memorable sets.

    PD: Congratulations on “More Baby!” As your second single with Aluna following “Beggin”, do you guys now have a production process?

    CL: Not one that we recognize no. We do have plans to get in the studio more though. We’ve only had a limited amount of sessions in the studio unfortunately. But, we’ve made two bangers so something is working.

    PD: What inspired you both to work together again? Is this the last Chris Lake and Aluna track we’re getting?

    CL: We did both of the tracks around the same time earlier this year. It was just difficult for us to release both of these around her album which had already been scheduled a long time previously.

    PD: You’ve been working on your Under Construction Brand with FISHER. How did that start and what was it like creating it?

    CL: At the root of this we’re just mates that love music and the few times we have played music together people have loved it. We’ve just essentially reacted at each stage to the last party and said –let’s do this next time– and at one of those points we decided to start the Under Construction Brand. Honestly all we care about is having a laugh and having a party that we have all our friends and family at. It’s not all just about what the crowd sees but there is also a whole party going on behind the decks too which is just as memorable for us.

    PD: You both have been performing B2B sets as well, with an Under Construction event coming up in LA. How do you blend your sounds together during these shows?

    CL: That is a good question. I don’t know. I guess we just have a synergy musically. I trust him and he trusts me. Most of the time we don’t have any plan we just follow each others lead and see where it takes us.

    PD: You’re also the founder of Black Book Records. What was it like starting your own label and what do you look for in artists you sign?

    CL: I am. I love that label. At the root of it it was an outlet for me to release my own music but more importantly, now it’s an avenue to develop and release music from new and exciting talent and it’s something that all of us at the label take very seriously. It’s our passion to release music that excites us and help expose and grow artists that we sign to a wider audience both through the success of the music itself and through the events they are abel to play off the back of those releases.

    PD: You’ve got a few live performances to end the year. What are your favorite tracks to perform live?

    CL: There’s loads. I still get the greatest kick from playing “Turn Off the Lights” because its still probably my biggest record and I’m proud of how it turned out and the reaction I get at my shows. It makes people happy which makes me happy too.

    I don’t know about you guys, but I’m feeling a bit lackluster this week. It may be because of the raging illness I’ve been fighting- and I know I’m not alone here…but there is truly nothing I need more than the weekend and new music.

    I’m gearing up to cover Sea.Hear.Now festival in Asbury Park, New Jersey, where I’ll be beach-side watching bands like The Killers and The Beach Boys play all weekend. Naturally, that means I need a playlist to get me through the drive to the shore, one that will hype up me and my roommates for a great weekend.

    But, let’s not be selfish here, I’m sure you also have plans (and one day, I’d love to hear about them, just not now!) Here’s the thing about me, and I’m sure someone can relate, I find it hard to listen to the same playlist week after week. Whether I’m pregaming for the bars or driving to my next destination, I will tire of the same songs when I overplay them.

    And then there’s the songs that I hyper-fixate on, listening to them on repeat until I finally scratch the itch and stop forever. Regardless, my mindset is “out with the old, in with the new” and you know what that means…

    We have a whole new week’s worth of music to celebrate! That’s right: Drake and SZA, Demi Lovato, Chris Lake and Aluna, and more will be gracing our ears this weekend. If no one else is excited for this playlist, I am…so as always, let’s get listening!

    Noah Kahan, Lizzy McAlpine- “Call Your Mom” 

    There aren’t enough sufficient words in the world to describe my love for Noah Kahan. He’s one of the busiest men in music right now- touring the world, collaborating on “Dial Drunk” with none other than Post Malone, he was just spotted recording with Zach Bryan, and now has released his collab with Lizzy McAlpine on his song “Call Your Mom.”

    While “Call Your Mom” was already touching, Lizzy McAlpine’s voice lends a different perspective to the song. When your favorite artists announces a collab, part of you is nervous because you fear the song will be ruined now…but that isn’t the case with Lizzy McAlpine, whose gentle vocals enhance Noah’s, melding perfectly into one of the best duos music can get.

    Chris Lake, Aluna- “More Baby” 

    Chris Lake and Aluna are quickly emerging as the ultimate dance duo: with Aluna’s sultry vocals and Chris Lake’s iconic production abilities, it’s no surprise that they followed up the success of “Beggin” with their new single: “More Baby.” A song perfect for your pregames, your runs, or for any time you want to get up and moving, “More Baby” is classic Chris Lake.

    It’s been a huge year for both Lake and Aluna, who have been touring and simultaneously releasing banger after banger. You can’t help but feel like this isn’t the end for a budding dynamic duo like these two, and “More Baby” just solidifies that any track can be a hit if their names are attached.

    Shay Lia- “ON THE LOW” 

    If you want a song that embodies After Hours at the club, where you’re just focusing on dancing all night…then try Shay Lia’s “ON THE LOW.” Shay Lia’s crooning voice is ideal for her R&B sound, but it’s also perfect for mixing up genres and stepping out of the norm. “ON THE LOW” is an example of how Lia can throw her voice into any genre- dance, R&B, pop, you name it- and it will work.

    Shay Lia created this track with Kaytranada, marking their 10th collaboration together over their long-time friendship. Now 10 years later, “ON THE LOW” shows that nothing has changed for the pairing: they’re still friends, they can still make a hit track, and it’s always going to work for them.

    DWLLRS- “This Heaven’s Tall” 

    DWLLRS has a way of perfectly capturing nostalgia and wrapping it up into a flawless track. Their melancholic music can feel eye-opening, beautiful, and rare all at once. Their new single, “This Heaven’s Tall”, deals with the risks and rewards of falling in love with someone new, and, as always, the California duo puts their own spin on love that listeners will appreciate.

    What I love about Fridays isn’t that I get to log off work early (well, maybe a little) or that I have an excuse to attend happy hour…it’s that I’m guaranteed new music. And now that we are fully in June, artists are churning out albums and singles to get us through the summer months. This week, especially, is a hot spot for new bangers for your playlists.

    We have releases like “TUYA” by ROSALÍA, “Who Told You (feat. Drake)” by J His, “VULGAR (with Madonna)” by Sam Smith and Madonna, and “WHAT THE HELL ARE WE DYING FOR?” by Shawn Mendes, who wrote the track in 24 hours after New York City was covered in smoke from the Canadian wildfires. But that’s not all, not even close.

    EDM extraordinaire Chris Lake came out with his remix of “In The Yuma (feat. AATIG) (Four Tet Remix)”, which is sure to be a club banger. City Girls released “Piñata”, and Youngboy Never Broke Again dropped the first single from his new album, “Realize (feat. Lil Dump, Rojay MLP, NBA Big B)”.

    Since this week was filled with new music, here are a few of my picks to put on your weekend playlist:

    1. Noah Kahan – ​Stick Season (We’ll All Be Here Forever)

    Rapidly rising indie folk artist Noah Kahan has been stealing the hearts of listeners. It’s not hard to love his music, which feels like the perfect blend of The Lumineers, Mumford & Sons, and Hozier. His new album, Stick Season (We’ll All Be Here Forever), contains 21 songs that are purely Noah. The Vermont-born singer has a raw way of storytelling, with country-inspired backing from symphonies of banjos and string instruments. It’s worth the listen from top to bottom.

    2. Niall Horan – The Show

    In his first album since 2020, Niall Horan releases The Show…and wow, does this feel like the moment Horan skyrockets into superstardom alongside former band member, Harry Styles. Dare I say it’s his best? Throughout 10 songs, Niall takes you through a journey of love and positivity, it’s an album that you can already imagine bringing fans of all walks of life together. It’s a body of work that Horan has been working on for years, and it’s a special album that should be rewarded.

    3. Carter Rubin – “last time” 

    Carter Rubin may only be 17, but his voice already has a timeless quality that is beautifully exhibited in his new single, “last time.” It’s an honest track that captures how it feels to fall in love at such a young age, and perfectly shows off Carter’s strong vocal abilities that will make him a star. With qualities of a go-to summer anthem, “last time” is Carter Rubin’s submission for your Song Of The Summer.

    4. Will Linley – “Tough (The Girls Song)” 

    Fans love Will Linley because he can create a track that fully encompasses what it’s like to as a member of Gen Z, perfectly summing up how we’re all feeling constantly. The musical embodiment of “I do my own stunts,” Linley is a singer, songwriter, and can play multiple instruments…fully showcasing his impeccable talent at all times. With “Tough (The Girls Song)”, we are given an 80’s vibe that never gets old and a fun single about a long-distance relationship ending.

    5. Arctic Lake – “My Weakness” 

    Arctic Lake, the duo compiled of Emma Foster and Paul Holliman, are gearing up to release their new EP, How Do You Make It Look So Easy, with their new single, “My Weakness.” It’s traditional Arctic Lake, an open-hearted single about how, when you’re in love, it can be your greatest strength and weakness. Alongside the single, the duo dropped a video racing us down a neon-lit highway jamming along to the song.

    6. Baby Queen – “Dream Girl” 

    Proclaimed London’s biggest “anti-pop” star, Baby Queen is here with “Dream Girl”…a pop-punk fusion talking about these two polar opposite sides of her meeting as one. It’s a song about how Baby Queen fell in love with a woman who was already in a relationship with a man, and wanting something you can’t have. It’s punchy, fun, and exciting, which is the perfect ending to this New Music Friday roundup!

    Blueprint and Live Nation have reeled in the house music superstar for a headlining performance at the PNE Forum in Vancouver, British Columbia on Sunday, February 19th. Lake will be accompanied by Nora En Pure, Mark Knight and Le Youth, among others.

    The event is the first in a new series of events called Foundation, which is “thoughtfully curated for fans of house music” and serves as a place to “revisit the underground foundations and building blocks upon which electronic music was built.”
