  • 2026 Rose Parade: Road closures, parking and rules you should know

    Traffic on Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena will be replaced by barbecues, folding chairs and coolers starting Wednesday night ahead of the 137th Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year’s Day.

    That means road closures, traffic congestion and lots of people. A forecast of rain is adding another layer of complexity for campers and parade-goers.

    Before the petals hit the metal, here’s what you should know:

    Street closures

    The 5.5-mile parade route begins on Orange Grove Boulevard, then turns east onto Colorado for the bulk of the trek before ending at Sierra Madre Boulevard.

    Street closures will begin at 10 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, and roadways will reopen at 2 p.m. on New Year’s Day:

    • Officials will block traffic on Colorado, the main leg of the parade route.
    • All north-south roads intersecting the route between Del Mar Boulevard and the 210 Freeway also will be closed to traffic over that time period.
    • Sierra Madre Boulevard will be closed to southbound traffic for the duration.

    A midnight 5K race will add another layer of overnight restrictions.

    Beginning at 11 p.m. Wednesday, cross-traffic will be shut down at multiple intersections between Pasadena and Hill avenues, including El Molino, Fair Oaks, Marengo, Los Robles, Lake and Wilson avenues. Those intersections will reopen once the race concludes.

    Race staging will begin even earlier. Streets along Colorado Boulevard from St. John Avenue to De Lacey Avenue, and from Marengo Avenue to Euclid Avenue, will close at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

    Getting to the parade

    The parade kicks off at 8 a.m. and runs for two hours.

    Officials recommend avoiding driving to the event. Metro’s A Line (Gold) runs along the parade route and provides access to multiple viewing areas.

    For those who do drive, plan to get there early. Campers and overnight spectators will set up on sidewalks along the parade route beginning Wednesday morning. The Pasadena Department of Transportation “strongly” advises parade-goers park before 6 a.m. the day of the event. Rose Bowl parking can be pre-purchased.

    Drivers trying to get around the closures are encouraged to use Walnut Street or the 210 Freeway for east-west travel north of Colorado Boulevard, and Del Mar Boulevard or Cordova Street to the south. The 134 Freeway is also an option.

    Rules of the road

    Rain is expected for this year’s Rose Parade, but umbrellas are not permitted along the parade route because they block the view for others. Wear a rain rain jacket or poncho instead.

    Camping is permitted along the parade route beginning Wednesday. All items, including blankets, chairs and bags, must remain on the curb until 11 p.m.

    After that time, spectators may move forward to the blue “honor line” chalked on the road but not beyond it.

    Tents, bonfires and fireworks are not allowed.

    With temperatures dipping, campers are urged to use weather-rated sleeping bags. Small, professionally manufactured barbecues are allowed, as long as they are elevated at least a foot off the ground, placed at least 25 feet from buildings, and accompanied by a nearby fire extinguisher.

  • Multnomah County Chair Declares State Of Emergency Over Impacts Of Federal Immigration Enforcement – KXL

    PORTLAND, Ore. – Multnomah County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson on Friday declared a state of emergency to address what she describes as escalating harm and fear caused by federal immigration enforcement activities in the community.

    The declaration is intended to give the county more flexibility as it responds to ICE actions, which county officials say have led to heightened anxiety among immigrant and mixed-status families.

    County leaders say stepped-up immigration enforcement has resulted in residents avoiding work, school, transit, medical appointments and county services out of fear. More than 13% of Multnomah County residents were born outside the United States.

    Under the emergency declaration, county agencies will be directed to follow Oregon’s sanctuary laws and to provide or facilitate emergency services. The order also allows the county to bypass certain purchasing rules to speed resources to affected communities and seeks state assistance ranging from financial relief to expanded food, housing and mental health support.

    The declaration also calls on state leaders and Oregon’s congressional delegation to denounce unconstitutional actions and push for comprehensive immigration reform.

    The move comes ahead of a Dec. 18 Board of Commissioners vote on a resolution to reaffirm and strengthen Multnomah County’s sanctuary status. Commissioners are also expected to consider an emergency $250,000 funding package for legal and human services tied to federal enforcement impacts.

    Vega Pederson and Commissioner Shannon Singleton will host a virtual town hall Dec. 15 to gather community feedback on proposed sanctuary policy updates.

  • CDC replaces website on vaccines and autism with false and misleading statements

    The national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have altered their website on autism and vaccines, removing unequivocal statements that immunizations don’t cause the neurodevelopmental disorder and replacing them with inaccurate and misleading information about the links between the shots and autism.

    Until Wednesday, the CDC page, “Autism and Vaccines,” began: “Studies have shown that there is no link between receiving vaccines and developing autism spectrum disorder (ASD).”

    This was followed, in large font, by the blunt statement: “Vaccines do not cause autism.”

    The rest of the page summarized some of the CDC’s own studies into autism and vaccine ingredients, none of which found any causal links between the two.

    On Wednesday, the page was altered so that it now begins: “The claim ‘vaccines do not cause autism’ is not an evidence-based claim because studies have not ruled out the possibility that infant vaccines cause autism.”

    The words “Vaccines do not cause autism” still appear near the top, but with an asterisk that leads to a note at the bottom.

    “The header ‘Vaccines do not cause autism’ has not been removed due to an agreement with the chair of the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee that it would remain on the CDC website,” the site states.

    The chair of that committee, Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), cast the deciding vote to advance Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s appointment as Health and Human Services secretary, in exchange for Kennedy’s promise that he wouldn’t erode public confidence in vaccines.

    “Studies supporting a link have been ignored by health authorities,” HHS spokesman Andrew Dixon said in an email. “We are updating the CDC’s website to reflect gold standard, evidence-based science.”

    The news was met with outrage by scientists and advocates.

    “We are appalled to find that the content on the CDC webpage ‘Autism and Vaccines’ has been changed and distorted, and is now filled with anti-vaccine rhetoric and outright lies about vaccines and autism,” the nonprofit Autism Science Foundation said in a statement. “The CDC’s previous science and evidence-based website has been replaced with misinformation and now actually contradicts the best available science.”

    The current CDC page now says the rise in autism diagnoses correlates with an increase in the number of vaccines given to infants. Multiple researchers have argued that the rise in autism spectrum disorder diagnoses is better explained by an expanding diagnostic definition of the disorder, along with better monitoring and diagnosis for more children.

    Cassidy’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment Thursday.

  • Lumbar Support Can Make a Huge Difference in Your Office Chair

    I also spoke to John Gallucci, a licensed physical therapist and athletic trainer who specializes in treating symptoms from poor office posture, and he confirmed much of what Egbert said. Closed case, right? Well, it’s certainly not just marketing speak so that office chair manufacturers can charge you extra. But there are some important factors to consider.

    Not All Lumbar Support Is Equal

    Gallucci was quick to point out the benefits of lumbar support, but he also issued some warnings about how to proceed. Turns out, not all lumbar support is equal. “The most important thing to look for in a chair is ergonomic adjustability,” he says, referencing the need for adjustable lumbar support. “A good chair should support your posture for long periods without causing discomfort or fatigue. That means it should allow you to adjust the seat height, seat pan depth, armrests, lumbar support, and backrest tilt.”

    Chairs with fixed lumbar support mean it isn’t adjustable to your body. Lumbar support and adjustments come in different forms these days. For example, some chairs have lumbar height adjustment but not depth, also known as “two-way” adjustment. Some use a dial for adjustment, and others use a ratchet or lever system. Other chairs let you adjust the entire backrest to find the right position, and some cheaper chairs resort to just a simple pad that can be manually moved. These can, in theory, all be good solutions, so long as you’re able to find the right position.

    “That curve has to be adjustable as to where it is,” Egbert says. “My butt might be lower than your butt, and you want it to match where that curve in your lower back is. You want to be able to slide it up and down.”

    A good example of an ergonomic chair with “two-way” lumbar adjustment is the Branch Ergonomic Chair Pro.     If you aren’t ready to shell out $500 on an ergonomic chair, that doesn’t mean you have to be doomed to lower back pain. Some DIY solutions can even be better than a chair with inadequate lumbar adjustment. We’ve even tested some add-on lumbar cushions that we like, such as this LoveHome model you can find on Amazon.

    When it comes down to it, though, lumbar support isn’t the first thing to tackle when setting up your workspace. If you’re sitting at an old desk working from only a laptop, lumbar support is never going to solve your posture issues. Fix that first, with either a laptop stand or a height-adjustable monitor.

    After that, yes, lumbar support is a good thing. It needs to be adjustable and well-implemented, but it’s something you’ll want to make sure is available on your next office chair. If you’re sitting for eight hours a day, your back deserves it.

    Razer has made a name for itself in the gaming space, with robust gear that tackles the high demands and highly particular needs gamers have. The company makes everything from customizable gaming mice to powerful laptops. But can Razer meet the needs of gamers’ butts? With the Razer Fujin Pro gaming chair, it’s looking like the answer is yes.

    Unlike most so-called gaming chairs, the Fujin Pro wouldn’t look out of place in a typical office. It avoids the all-too-common racing style seat, opting instead for a lightweight, breathable mesh over an aluminum alloy frame that looks stylish without being garish.

    The Fujin Pro model has a few advantages over its less expensive cousin: The aforementioned aluminum frame replaces the nylon frame on the Fujin; the adjustable headrest is now an included option, rather than an add-on; the lumbar support can be adjusted both vertically and forward and backward; and the armrests can now be adjusted along four different directions.

    It all adds up to a premium chair that would spoil any gamer.

    S-Tier Support

    The first thing that impressed me about the Fujin Pro was how incredibly easy it was to set up and customize. The aluminum frame is so sturdy that when inserting the seat back into the base, the frame was able to hold itself in place with minimal support while I screwed in the bolts. All told, the setup process took about 15 minutes.

    Once the chair was upright, I expected to spend some time fiddling with levers and dials to get it positioned to my comfort, but even this was simpler than I anticipated. A switch on the right released the pneumatic cylinder to raise the seat to the correct height, and another on the left allowed me to slide the base of the seat forward and back. Both snapped back into place once I was satisfied and released them.

    This is all fairly standard, but the lumbar support and backrest surprised me the most. The lumbar module on the rear of the chair features a large dial, and two easy-to-grasp handles, both of which I could reach while sitting in the chair. The handles let me move the lumbar support higher or lower along my back, while the dial pushed the support forward or backward.

    Meanwhile, the backrest has two modes. You can either pull a switch along the left side of the seat up to lock the back in place, or press it down to freely tilt the entire seat back. And when I say the entire seat, I mean the base and all. While the seat back can tilt further, independent of the base, the bottom of the seat tilts largely in tandem with the back, making the act of reclining extremely comfortable.

    A dial under the right side of the chair base controls how much reclining resistance the chair provides, and it’s surprisingly strong. I usually prefer to keep my chair locked, as I have a tendency to slouch, but with the resistance dialed high, I was able to get enough give from the chair to lean back, without losing any support.

    Up In Arms

    Most of the time, I don’t care much for armrests on office chairs. They’re handy (ha) for sitting back at rest, but they either get in the way or aren’t in a position to be useful for the way I sit in my chair. But the Fujin Pro’s armrests are so versatile that I actually got some use out of them.

    The armrests can be adjusted in four different ways. A switch on the outside allows you to adjust their height, and a button on the inside lets you slide them left or right. If this was all the customization the armrests provided, it would probably be sufficient.

    California Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas (D-Hollister) announced new legislative leadership on Tuesday, a key decision in his first year as leader of the lower house that could shape what becomes law in the nation’s most populous state.

    Among the most significant changes is the announcement of a new majority leader: Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry (D-Davis). She replaces Assemblymember Isaac Bryan (D-Los Angeles) who was a key lieutenant to Rivas in his contentious year-long battle to become speaker that ended when he was sworn in this summer. Bryan now takes over as chair of the Natural Resources committee, a key panel on environmental policy.

    Committee chairs have significant power to determine which bills live or die at the Capitol. New influential committee leaders announced Tuesday include Assemblymember Buffy Wicks (D-Oakland), who will chair the powerful appropriations committee, and Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel (D-Encino), who will oversee the budget committee. Both Wicks and Gabriel hold power over the state’s purse strings in their new roles, and are allies of Rivas, helping him secure the speakership during chaotic jockeying in the Capitol.

    The tweaks to leadership could mean changes to come in Sacramento policymaking, with a renewed focus on affordability, safety and “strong public services,” said Rivas, who was sworn into the leadership role this summer after a contentious battle with former Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Lakewood) who reluctantly gave up the position after seven years at the helm.

    “The Assembly is unified and ready to deliver,” Rivas said in a statement. “That’s what Californians expect from their Legislature and that’s what this team will achieve.”

    But not every recipient of a new leadership role supported Rivas, signaling that he and state lawmakers are willing to forgive and forget after this year’s political drama.

    Assemblymember Kevin McCarty, a Democrat and longtime Rendon ally who is running for mayor of Sacramento, was named chair of the high profile public safety committee as California grapples with its crime response and leads the nation on issues like gun regulation. Tensions over how to respond to fentanyl and child sex trafficking split Democrats at the Capitol earlier this year.

    Assemblymember Chris Ward (D-San Diego) also supported Rendon over Rivas and was named leader of the housing committee on Tuesday, now overseeing policy decisions on one the state’s top issues.

    “We have transitioned and we are about looking forward,” Ward said in an interview Tuesday, adding that Rivas told him he was chosen in the role because of his background working on housing and homelessness issues as a member of the San Diego City Council.

    Ward said in his new role, he will focus on removing barriers to housing production and making options more affordable for prospective homeowners and renters.

    “There’s tension between state and local roles on housing. We do need to have stronger partnerships with local governments,” Ward said.

    Freshman lawmaker Liz Ortega (D-San Leandro) will helm the labor and employment committee on the heels of a remarkable year for union backed policy. She was elected last year after working for years as a labor union leader.

    Some of Rivas’ picks are newly-elected lawmakers with the potential to stay in office for another decade.

    “I think it speaks to Speaker Rivas’ leadership to say we respect the people who have come before us, and now it’s time to build on that work and to think long-term about people who can be here in these positions for quite a number of years,” said Assemblymember Lori Wilson (D-Suisun City) who was elected last year and was named chair of the transportation committee Tuesday.

    Other new appointments include:

    • Assemblymember Jim Wood (D-Healdsburg) as speaker pro tem.
    • Assemblymember Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles) as assistant majority leader.
    • Assemblymember Ash Kalra (D-San Jose) as chair of the judiciary committee.
    • Assemblymember Blanca Rubio (D-Baldwin Park) as chair of governmental organization.
    • Assemblymember Alex Lee (D-San Jose) as the chair of human services.
    • Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan (D-Orinda) as chair of privacy and consumer protection.
    • Assemblymember Diane Papan (D-San Mateo) as chair of water, parks and wildlife.
    • Assemblymember Mia Bonta (D-Alameda) as chair of the health committee.

    High-profile conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar’s plea to provide him a stool inside the prison was turned down by a Delhi court on Wednesday.  As per the details, Chandrashekar, who is presently lodged at the Mandoli jail in Delhi, had moved an application in the court of Special Judge Sanjeev Kumar Malhotra stating that he has problems sitting cross-legged for hours and should be provided a chair or a stool to sit while meeting his family members, and doing other things because of his medical conditions.  

    His advocate Mayank Tripathi in his plea had said that the court should allow the applicant to sit on a stool or chair during family mulakat due to his serious medical condition.

    He added that due to Chandrashekar’s severe medical condition, his doctors had advised him not to squat or bend forward. But jail authorities, he said, had turned a deaf ear to his concern. 

    Special Judge Sanjeev Kumar Malhotra dismissed his plea saying that it was devoid of any merits.   

    In another application, the Supreme Court on October 18 refused to entertain a fresh plea by Chandrashekhar asking him to seek transfer from Mandoli jail in the city to any other jail, which is not under the control of the Director General of Prisons, Delhi.

    The counsel appearing for Chandrashekhar said that despite several assurances, Chandrashekhar was being allegedly assaulted in jail. The lawyer also alleged that Chandrashekhar is being pressured to pay Rs 25 lakh per month in jail. 

    A Bench of Justices Ajay Rastogi and C.T. Ravikumar declined to interfere in the matter. 

    On August 23, the apex court ordered that Chandrashekhar and his wife be shifted from Tihar Jail to Mandoli Jail in the city. It had passed the order on a plea filed by Chandrashekhar and his wife alleging a threat to their lives and seeking a transfer to a prison outside Delhi.
