Rahu Ketu, starring Fukrey duo Pulkit Samrat and Varun Sharma in the lead role, recorded an inauspicious opening weekend. The movie, directed by Vipul Vig, the comedy drama registered a roughly 5 percent hike on Sunday over the previous day and added Rs. 1.70 crore to the tally. This took the total opening weekend cume of Rahu Ketu to slightly under Rs. 4.50 crore net at the Indian box office.
Coming from an ambitious mythological premise, Rahu Ketu couldn’t impress the audience much. The movie opened to mixed-bag reactions, which is reflecting in its underwhelming day-to-day trends too. Though the movie managed to record an upward trajectory, it couldn’t gain the much-needed traction over the weekend. That said, the movie is performing better than its rival release, Happy Patel: Khatarnaak Jasoos—however, the fate of both movies sealed in their opening weekends only.
Rahu Ketu doesn’t have much room to grow as the Pulkit Samrat starrer will face Sunny Deol’s Border 2 from the coming weekend. The much-awaited military drama is likely to grab most of the screens and kick every non-performing holdover release out of the cinemas. It will be interesting to see how far Rahu Ketu can go from here on.
Day-wise box office collection of Rahu Ketu in India:
Day Box Office
Rs. 1.10 crore
Rs. 1.60 crore
Rs. 1.70 crore
Total: Rs. 4.40 crore
For the unversed, Rahu Ketu is about the two funny characters, born from writer Churu Lal’s magical notebook, who are set on a voyage to retrieve it from the crafty Meenu Taxi. Besides Pulkit and Varun, the movie also stars Shalini Pandey, Chunky Pandey, Piyush Mishra, Manu Rishi Chadha, Amit Sial, and Sumit Gulati in pivotal roles.
Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates.

At the heart of Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound is the image of one young man carrying another. Early in the film, we see the piggyback as a moment of laughter and joy. By the end of the film, it’s a desperate attempt to defy death.
The man shouldering the burden is Shoaib (Ishaan Khatter). He is carrying his childhood friend, Chandan (Vishal Jethwa). Both are attempting to traverse the last few hundred miles to their village in the midst of the COVID pandemic. One is Muslim, the other Dalit. Both have spent their lives fighting bigotry and poverty, only to be further marginalized by disease and a lockdown. Chandan is sick but Shoaib doesn’t give up on him. He hauls him up on his back and keeps walking. It’s a powerful, searing symbol of humanity.
Executive produced by Martin Scorsese, Homebound is based on an op-ed written by Basharat Peer in The New York Times, titled “A Friendship, a Pandemic and a Death Beside the Highway.” From that 2020 article, Ghaywan has built out a narrative that hurls us, with both urgency and restraint, into the fault lines of India.
The film begins with both boys attempting to join the police force. Their reasoning is that once you’re wearing a uniform, faith and caste no longer matter. But it is an uphill battle, because there are approximately 714 candidates for each seat. Chandan doesn’t want to be identified as someone from an oppressed caste. Shoaib eventually gets a job where he is valued for his street smarts but also routinely reminded that he doesn’t belong. Eventually, both end up in Surat, in state of Gujarat. But when the pandemic hits, work is shut down, and they must find a way back across thousands of miles to their village.
Since his award-winning 2015 debut Masaan, Ghaywan has become Hindi cinema’s foremost chronicler of marginalized men and women. His stories — consider his short films Juice (2017) and Geeli Pucchi (2021) — aren’t didactic or shrill. With control and craft, Ghaywan reveals the cruelty built into our social fabric and asks us to consider what part we play, consciously or unconsciously, in furthering it.
Homebound continues this theme. Shoaib and Chandan are reminded again and again that they are, by virtue of their births, perceived as lesser. There is a gut-wrenching sequence in which Chandan’s mother (a superb Shalini Vatsa), who works in a village school, is forbidden from cooking for the children because of her caste. When the protesting parents are reminded that what they are doing is unconstitutional, a father angrily replies, “You can keep your constitution.”
The noisy aggression cuts to silence. The woman is sitting alone looking at a photograph of the great B. R. Ambedkar, who was the chief architect of the Indian constitution. Adopted in 1949, the document explicitly promises “justice, social, economic and political” as a core guiding principle. And yet, more than 70 years later, discrimination remains deep and abiding.
The precision, beauty and emotion in the film is built on strong writing (the screenplay is by Ghaywan and the story is by Peer, Ghaywan and Sumit Roy) and superb performances. Khatter and Jethwa shed their Bollywood baggage, as does costar JanhviKapoor as Chandan’s love interest, demonstrating authenticity and the ability to deliver complex emotion. Khatter, who started his career with Majid Majidi’s 2017 film Beyond the Clouds, is especially brilliant in his returns to his roots.
Homebound is the story of ordinary people who find the courage and compassion to resist systemic cruelty. On the long road home, Shoaib and Chandan come to a tiny village. Shoaib begs for water but is met with hostility. Men, standing on a terrace, start to throw stones to drive them out — they are afraid that these two bring disease. But a woman, her face covered by her ghoonghat (veil), defies them. She brings out a bucket, pours water into their cupped hands and quenches their thirst.
Which took me back to the end of Raj Kapoor’s superb 1956 film Jagte Raho (Stay Awake), in which he plays a poor man who wanders into an apartment building looking for water but spends the night hiding and running because they take him for a thief. When morning comes, he hears a bhajan (religious song) and follows the sound, which leads him to Nargis, resplendent in white. She comes forth with a pot and pours water for him. These small acts of kindness, these films seem to say, can save the world.
Be warned that Homebound is a three-hankie weeper. There is a scene between Shoaib and Chandan’s mother that destroyed me. This is the best Hindi film of the year so far. Don’t miss it.

So, you’re interested in Bollywood movies. Alright, I’ve got some recommendations for you. (Note that this list will not have films like Danny Boyle’s award-winning Slumdog Millionaire. We are going all Indian written and directed films. No continued Western imperialism here.)
What is Bollywood?
Let me briefly explain what “Bollywood” means for the people in the back. First, the term refers to the Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai or Bombay before 1995. The first known Indian feature, Raja Harishchandra (1913), and the first sound film, Alam Ara (1931), were focused on Indian folklore and mythology. The success of the pictures led to film studios being developed in Bombay (now Mumbai), Calcutta (Kolkata), and Madras (Chennai). Filmistan Studio (started in 1943) and Raj Kapoor’s RK Studios (1948) became significant production houses.
In the Golden Age of Indian film (1940s-60s), filmmakers like Satyajit Ray, Guru Dutt, and Mehboob Khan came to the fore, with films that will be mentioned in the list. The so-called “Masala” era brought genre-blending (and bending) and the emergence of the “angry young man” persona, as popularized by actor Amitabh Bachchan. The evolution of the ’90s saw a shift toward the inclusion of romantic comedies and dramas, with a focus on NRI (Non-Resident Indian) audiences. 2001’s Lagaan also earned an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.
Bollywood is the world’s largest film industry on raw film production and has become a significant cultural export. Of course, the musical numbers are key features, as are the colorful, elaborate productions—though this has changed in recent decades with the development of more hardboiled films.
Alright? Let’s get to the list.
10. Mother India (1957)
Directed by Mehboob Khan, Mother India is arguably the most influential film in Indian cinema history. This is an epic, long-spanning drama chronicling the life of Radha (portrayed by Nargis), a poor village woman struggling to raise her sons while surviving an unscrupulous landlord. The film investigates female empowerment, class warfare, and conflicts between moral duty and maternal love. It is one of the first Technicolor films made in the country. It introduced the self-sacrificing Indian mother archetype and set a high standard for production value.
9. Sholay (1975)
A so-called “curry western” that follows two criminals hired by a retired police officer to capture a bandit—the villainous Gabbar Singh, one of film history’s most memorable and influential characters. Ramesh Sippy’s picture, with R.D. Burman’s legendary soundtrack, defined the “masala” film. It also pioneered 70mm film, and its sound design (stereophonic sound) would set a new standard.
8. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)
The film that solidified NRI romance into the canon, the romantic comedy detailed a couple falling in love in Europe. The film also subverted traditional, sometimes garish hero/heroine dynamics to present a more balanced relationship. The success led to more films targeting the audience of the Indian diaspora.
7. Mughal-e-Azam (1960)
The sheer scale of the film evokes comparisons to David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia—but Mughal-e-Azam preceded that epic movie by two years. The costly film, which took ten years to complete, depicts a love story between Prince Salim and Anarkali, a court dancer. K. Asif’s portrayal of Mughal-era grandeur has been mimicked countless times over the history of Indian cinema.
6. Lagaan (2001)
This epic musical/sports period drama, written and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, featured an international cast and crew—highly unusual for a Bollywood production, even at this time. A.R. Rahman’s classic score includes the song “Ghanan Ghanan,” which used rain as percussion. Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, the film introduced millions to Bollywood cinema.
5. Pyaasa (1957)
Written by, directed by, and starring Guru Dutt, the film focuses on a disillusioned Urdu poet and his relationships with a prostitute, an ex-girlfriend, and a world that doesn’t take him seriously. Dutt’s Vijay became a new archetype in the scene. Waheeda Rehman as Gulabo, the pure-hearted prostitute, added depth to the portrayal of marginalized women.
4. Satya (1998)
Ram Gopal Varma’s gritty, realistic portrayal of Mumbai’s underworld was revolutionary. The first of his Gangster trilogy pioneered the Indian gangster movie, with the character of Bhiku Mhatre (portrayed by Manoj Bajpayee) as a new icon, representing the complex morality of Mumbai’s organized crime figures.
3. 3 Idiots (2009)
Shot as a non-linear narrative, this comedy-drama critiques the Indian education system through a story involving three engineering students. It set a new standard for intelligent mainstream work in Bollywood with its nuanced balance between smart humor and serious social commentary.
2. Black (2005)
Based loosely on Helen Keller’s autobiography, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s distinctive and triumphant film tells the story of a deaf and blind girl and her relationship with her teacher. Rani Mukerji’s portrayal of Michelle McNally was groundbreaking in its depiction of disability in Indian cinema. The film also did not feature the typical song-and-dance sequences.
1. Dil Chahta Hai (2001)
This coming-of-age drama explored friendship, love, and the challenges of growing up in modern India as a group of friends transition into adulthood. The film’s visual realism and Farha Akhtar’s debut push Indian film into a younger, urban feel with great depth and complexity typically shown in Bollywood films. The soundtrack by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy blended Indian and Western musical styles in a way that better reflected the realities of young people at the turn of the century.
