It’s that time of year when the mornings and evenings are chilly, but the afternoons still feel like summer — especially for those of us who are in the Northeast. Although I love watching the leaves turn and getting into the fall spirit, I truly don’t know what to wear when any given day could feel like all four seasons in the course of 15 hours. That’s why I rely on layering. Cardigans, dusters, jean jackets, and leather jackets give me endless styling options and also help me seamlessly transition between summer and fall. However, sporting a shacket often feels most appropriate for autumn.

A shacket, or a shirt jacket, combines the structure of a traditional flannel or button-down shirt with the heavier feel of a jacket. What I Like About the Vuori Mackenzie Shirt Jacket:
Although it has a flannel-inspired look, Vuori’s Mackenzie Shirt Jacket feels silky-soft rather than rigid or scratchy — as if it’s been through the wash a few times. It delivers the same comfort as an old college sweatshirt, but it doesn’t look worn out. This shirt jacket also feels breathable, yet it still keeps me warm in 60-degree weather.

With its relaxed fit, the Mackenzie Shirt Jacket bodes well with a variety of outfits. It’s slightly oversize on me, but it’s not too big where the sleeves cover my hands. For a casual, yet put-together look, I layered the shirt jacket on top of a neutral bodysuit and teamed it with straight jeans and sneakers. I rolled up one sleeve for a more effortless look. I also wore the Mackenzie Shirt Jacket as loungewear, buttoned up and coordinated with Vuori’s bestselling Performance Joggers ($94). I can also style it over summer dresses or tie it around my waist or shoulders for convenience when it’s too hot.

I love that it’s versatile enough for a wide range of activities, whether I’m going to the gym, hanging out with friends, running errands, or just relaxing at home.

What’s Worth Noting About the Vuori Mackenzie Shirt Jacket:

I’m 5’1″, and although I got the XS/S size, the shirt jacket is pretty long on me. If you want a shirt jacket that is not as lengthy, especially if you are petite, I suggest going for a cropped style like this Sycamore Short Shirt Jacket ($158). I also found it tricky to tuck in because the fabric is thicker.

Surprisingly, the deep burgundy hue goes with a wide range of outfits and tones — even though it’s not necessarily considered a neutral shade — and it’s such a perfect color for fall and winter.
Beyond how it looks, I appreciate how spacious this bag is, especially since I cannot leave my apartment without carrying a mini CVS. The Times Square Tabby has a structured yet flexible silhouette that can fit pretty much everything I need for a day out, and a few extras. The bag has two open internal pockets, an internal zipper pocket, and an external snap pocket. I can fit my iPhone 13 Plus, my card holder wallet, a portable charger, several lip balms, hand cream, apartment keys, hand sanitizer, a tampon, gum, two wireless earbuds, cough drops, and more. It also has a snap closure that is very secure, so none of my belongings will fall out.

I appreciate that it comes with two detachable straps so that I can wear it as a shoulder bag or as a crossbody bag — and both straps are adjustable. I can wear it long or short, depending on my mood or the vibe of my look.

What’s Worth Noting About the Coach Times Square Tabby Shoulder Bag:

I use the Times Square Tabby Shoulder Bag almost every day, but there are a few occasions when the bag is a bit too big for my liking. I don’t recommend bringing this bag to concerts, festivals, or places where you want to dance. Although it comes with a crossbody strap, I still feel that the size of the bag gets in the way of enjoying a night out dancing, and I’m certainly not about to ditch this gorgeous bag in a random corner.

Each year, as the weather gets warmer, one of my favorite things to shop for is stylish swimwear that will make me look and feel confident. I would buy pieces that were considered the “it” style for the summer, but when the next year rolled around, I’d want a new look. I never really took the time to invest in basic swimwear staples that I could rely on for years to come — that is until Araks came into my life. What made me interested in trying out Araks’s swimwear is the brand ethos; Araks is all about classic pieces you’ll want to repeat again and again. “We design collections meant to work interchangeably with pieces from the past or those yet to come,” the site reads. Araks delivers quality items with a flattering fit and designs that are dependable and comfortable so naturally, I was excited to try some of its bestselling swimwear.

What’s the Criteria For a Good Swimwear?

When shopping for swimwear, we want pieces that fit comfortably, look flattering, and are made with materials that are thick and durable so that they can handle everything from salty waves to chlorinated pools. Good swimwear should fit snugly against the body without causing discomfort or chafing. Depending on your needs and preferences, you should consider the swimwear’s coverage, waistline, and leg cut. If you’re larger-chested like I am, you’ll probably want bikini tops or one pieces that offer support with an underwire or a built-in bra. Good swimwear should complement your body shape and personal style. Overall, it should make you feel confident.

What I Like About Araks Swimwear:

I decided to try on Araks’s Natalie One Piece ($320) and the Juliette One Piece ($360) as both swimsuits had classic silhouettes with a fun, trend-driven twist. Even before wearing the swimwear, I was impressed by the quality of the fabric; it’s lightweight yet opaque and stretchy yet supportive. Both my one-pieces have a built-in bra shelf, which I appreciated as someone with a bigger bust who requires support.

Although the Natalie One Piece looks simple, it has a cut-out back that adds a fun flair and breathability. The built-in shelf bra supports and lifts the bustline, and its square neckline isn’t risqué so I felt totally comfortable. I tend to go for pieces with adjustable straps to ensure everything stays in place; however, the straps on the Natalie One Piece are thick and did not slide down.
The Juliette One Piece is a trendier option featuring an asymmetrical design with a one-shoulder neckline. Similar to the Natalie One Piece, this style also has a supportive built-in shelf bra that flatters the bust area. The Juliette One Piece features a cut-out on the side that helps accentuate my curves. It also has a three-strip cut-out at the back for a more modern, edgy look. According to the brand’s site, this one piece is made from Econyl fabric, which is a regenerated nylon that comes from discarded fishing nets, making this suit a sustainable swimwear option.

These two one-pieces are in line with the brand’s mission of creating timeless pieces that can outlive ever-changing trend cycles. I actually wore the Natalie one-piece as a bodysuit with jeans and sneakers, and no one could tell I was sporting swimwear to a bar (which also helped with accidentally spilled drinks). Given its hefty price point, I appreciated how versatile these pieces can be, whether part of my swim-season essentials or as an everyday staple. Araks’s swimwear is functional, flattering, and timeless and is well worth the investment.

What to Consider Before Trying Araks Swimwear:

To properly care for the swimwear, the brand suggests rinsing the pieces in cool water immediately after swimming to remove excess salt and chlorine. It’s best to use a gentle detergent and to dry flat but not in direct sunlight to avoid fading. To ensure that the swimwear does not get unnecessarily damaged, you should not tumble dry, iron, or dry clean the pieces nor should you wring excess water out or use bleach.

Araks’s swimwear is ideal for those looking for sustainable staple pieces made to last. Each piece is made with a thick, comfortable material that will not fall apart after a few uses.

Padma Lakshmi Designed a Lingerie Collection With a Nod to Her Heritage

Throughout the years, we’ve seen Padma Lakshmi dominate the food industry from her host gigs at a wide range of culinary TV shows like “Top Chef” and “Taste of the Nation” to her various cookbooks. She also landed her first SI Swimsuit cover in 2023 at the age of 52, and it nearly broke the internet. Now, she’s adding designer to her long list of accomplishments by creating a collection of lingerie, swimwear, and loungewear with Bare Necessities.

Lakshmi often shops at Bare Necessities so working with them was a no-brainer. She loves that they carry a wide variety of brands, noting that you can get an Adidas sports bra and a frilly lingerie set all in one place. “[The Bare Necessities team] told me that over 95% of their consumer base is female, and I liked that,” she tells PS. “It means women are buying for themselves, and that’s what I want. I wanted to speak directly to women, and I want the collection to be something women reach for consistently and that they love because it’s useful to them. They just feel good in it, and every time they wear it, they feel comfortable. They feel at home wherever they are and really good in their own bodies.”

When designing the collection, Lakshmi paid special attention to the color palette. A color she features throughout the line is bold magenta, a shade that reminds her of her heritage. “Magenta is probably my favorite color. You see pops of hot pink, but you don’t see those blue-magenta hues, the color that’s very prevalent in Indian raw silk. It’s almost called the double shade (referencing Kanjeevaram silk),” she says. Along with core neutrals like black and beige, she also incorporates baby blue. “Baby blue is also a color that’s really flattering and goes well with the magenta, but also is something wearable for everybody.”

Functionality was also top of mind. “Every item has this peekaboo element at the base of the bra. You need this because you need that support when you have bigger boobs. And that’s something I had to learn, too. I was like, ‘Why are these bras so matronly?’ Now I know, so we tried to find creative solutions to that,” she says.

With this collection and partnership, Lakshmi aims to empower women at every stage of their lives. She has a graceful approach to aging, one she learned while cooking with her grandmother. “When she taught me how to make sambar, or a lentil stew, she would hold my hand back and she would say, ‘Don’t put that in yet.’ Every ingredient in that stew has an appropriate time it should go into the pot, and if you put it too early, it’s going to lose its flavor, and you’re not going to be able to enjoy the pleasure of what that cilantro or spice can bring. She said, ‘You have to know when is the right time for certain things’, and I think that’s true of life,” says Lakshmi.

No matter your age, Lakshmi stresses that self love is key. “I always say, give yourself grace, prioritize, and be kind to yourself like you would to a friend you love. We are often more supportive to our girlfriends or our colleagues than we are to ourselves. I’m asking you to talk to yourself like someone you love.”

All the new pieces have a hint and are modeled after the Mustang and all my love for blue and the colors that were used with it,” she says. Combining stylish silhouettes with a utility design, the collection includes denim coveralls, a racing jacket, a corduroy hat, a T-shirt, and a key chain. “These pieces are my personal style, I’m very much an overall, coverall, baby T-shirt, baseball cap kind of girl,” she says. “I always think that there’s no wrong way to embrace your personal style. If you want to wear the baby T-shirt on top of a dress or with jeans or however, whatever you feel the most you, that’s how I want you to style it. That’s why I wanted to create this collection, because I want you to be able to go into the shop and work, or I want you to be able to wear it on the streets. And we combined the three things, and voila, we created the first-ever social slipper,” Gates says, noting that trends are leaning toward an era of maximalist comfort. As the brand grew in popularity, so did the demand for a more durable and outdoor-friendly shoe. Gates and Sharkey updated their indoor social shoe with a thicker sole that can handle the streets, cementing the brand as the stylish, cushioned everyday shoe made for the person doing it all. “A great pair of shoes definitely helps you fly through your day with ease. The founders are all about outsourcing when needed; in fact, both Gates and Sharkey prefer not to cook themselves. “The food is important, but it doesn’t need to be perfectly hot at the exact second, and you don’t need to be stressing about all the food details . . . I’ve just kind of taken the pressure off the food a little bit through outsourcing and realizing that’s not really what people remember when they leave. It’s all about the conversation and how people spend their time together,” Sharkey says.

Gates recommends setting the table with beautiful platters, adding a few vases of florals, and using candles as table decor with dimmed lighting so the table glows. She also recommends having a great playlist to really set the vibe. “I love my Frank Sinatra playlist. It just feels like regal and fun and jazzy and beautiful,” she says. Gates also points out that the host always leads the vibe of the night, so presenting yourself appropriately is a must. “If I’m wearing beautiful, comfortable flats and a great little outfit, people are like, oh, we’re going to be relaxing. It is going to be a chill vibe tonight and a good one; if I’m clacking around in heels, it feels more stiff and uncomfortable, so what you wear matters.”

Meet the Founders — and Designers — Behind South Asian New York Fashion Week

POPSUGAR: What makes South Asian fashion stand out? Can you speak on the artistry and why it deserves more attention on a global scale?

Shipra Sharma: We’ve all seen these heavy-beaded crystal work outfits at South Asian weddings, but I think a lot of the simpler embroidery and printing styles don’t get as much credit in the world like block printing, phulkari embroidery, and hand printing, each specific to the region it originated from.

Hetal Patel: With block printing, the actual symbols or the actual shapes that they will use differs between the indigenous tribes.

South Asian fashion isn’t only the decked-out bridal wear or what’s shown in Bollywood movies; there’s space for understated pieces. The most important thing about holding a platform like this is recognizing that there are so many different genres: there’s leisure wear, there’s street style, there’s resort wear, etc.

People are finally recognizing that every region has very different prints, art, fabric, culture, living style, even like a simple drape. We learned this with the Untitle by Nikita Shah presentation and sari draping demo. She made a very good point that even the way that you drape a simple cotton sari will differ region by region.

PS: We know that Indo-Western or Indo-fusion wear merges the worlds of traditional South Asian styling or textiles with a more modern approach to design. What is your take on Indo-fusion or Indo-Western wear?

SS: You see people taking their mom’s saris, lehengas, and suits and creating blazers and jackets and other outfits that they will wear on a day-to-day basis.

HP: Several of the designers in our season two lineup exemplify this and are pushing the envelope, including Maison Tai, Babougie, and Svarini. They are taking these fabrics, and they’re creating the silhouette that truly is Indo-fusion, whether it’s incorporating different block prints and utilizing pleats, slits, and innovative cuts or using the corset as an inspiration. I think everyone is moving towards a different definition of what Indo-Western is, that it’s not just taking a lehenga, putting on a T-shirt, and wearing some jhumkas [a type of earring style].
