Nikki Sixx fought back against accusations that Mötley Crüe doesn’t perform live during shows. He insists the band plays 100% live. They use pre-recorded elements only for instruments that can’t be replicated on stage. Sixx addressed this during a question-and-answer session on X.
Why does the group use backing tracks? Sixx traced the approach back to watching Queen perform the song “Bohemian Rhapsody” live. “Since we saw Queen using some to help during the song ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ live, we understood that we could bring in elements that we could not do live like orchestras, saxophones, etc., etc. and sync them up with what we are playing and we do play 100% live,” Sixx stated on X. “And it’s better for the fans and we enjoy being able to do what we did in the Studio live. It’s a win-win for us.”
Another fan questioned why the band doesn’t play “100% live.” Sixx shut down that suggestion fast: “We do. You were lied to. Sorry.”
Guitarist John 5 discussed this same topic during a May 2026 interview with the Thinking About Guitar podcast. “Nikki plays every single note on that stage. He messes up. You can hear mistakes,” John 5 said. “Tommy plays everything. I play everything. Vince is singing.”
He confirmed that background vocals, sirens, and intros run on track. But all music gets performed by the members. “Listen, there’s backups [backing vocals] that are on track,” John 5 said. “Of course, there’s backups pumped in, there’s sirens pumped in, there is intros pumped in, but all the music that we’re playing is being performed by us.”
This backing track discussion caught fire in 2023 when former guitarist Mick Mars filed a lawsuit against the band. Mars claimed Sixx “did not play a single note on bass during the entire U.S. tour” in 2022. The group denied those accusations.
Allen Kovac has managed the band for more than three decades. He told Variety in 2023 that bass and drum playing were live. “Everything is live with Nikki’s bass playing and Tommy’s drum playing. When they’ve used loops, they’re still playing,” Kovac said, according to Variety.
Mötley Crüe has used audio enhancements since 1987. Sixx says the technology fills out the sound rather than replacing live performance.
