Study Examines AI’s Impact on Journalism Skills
Nieman Lab reports on a new study in Journalism Practice examining whether journalists are losing or gaining skills as they adopt AI tools. Researcher Shangyuan Wu interviewed 14 journalists in Singapore and found concerns that generative AI could weaken foundational reporting abilities, including research, source tracking, interviewing, and independent thinking. Some journalists argued that AI simply streamlines routine work, much like search engines or transcription tools. The study also identified areas where journalists may need to improve, including fact-checking, editing, judgment, originality, and the ability to distinguish reliable information from AI-generated errors, bias, or generic writing. Publishers Urged to Test Google AI Opt-Outs
Press Gazette reports that publishing leaders are urging news organizations to experiment with new controls allowing them to opt out of having their content appear in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. The controls follow new publisher conduct requirements from the U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority, which told Google to give publishers more control over how their content is surfaced in AI answers.
