Former Detroit Lions Project Finds New Home

The Detroit Lions’ 2023 third-round pick is officially moving on. Defensive tackle Brodric Martin, once seen as a developmental project in Detroit, has joined the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice squad, according to multiple reports.

A Short Stint in Detroit

Martin, 26, was drafted by the Lions in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Western Kentucky. At 6-foot-5 and 326 pounds, his size and raw strength made him an intriguing prospect. Detroit’s front office believed he could become a disruptive presence in the middle of the defensive line with time and development.

But over two seasons, Martin struggled to earn consistent playing time. He appeared in just five games, recording four total tackles (three solo) and making one start in 2024.

Fresh Start With the Chiefs

Now, Martin heads to a Kansas City Chiefs roster that has a reputation for molding defensive linemen into productive contributors. Anchored by star defensive tackle Chris Jones, the Chiefs are constantly looking to develop depth, and Martin’s raw tools could make him a valuable project for defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

For Martin, the practice squad offers a chance to refine his technique and adjust to the speed of the NFL game without the pressure of immediate production. If he can show progress, a promotion to the active roster isn’t out of the question.
