One of the most outstanding actresses in Hindi cinematic history is without a doubt Rani Mukerji. The actress made a strong breakthrough in the 1996 film Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat and has only gained further recognition since then.

Rani Mukerji has captivated audiences with her performances in Mardaani, Hichki, Black, Hum Tum, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Veer Zaara, Bunty Aur Babli, Saathiya, Yuva, and many more. She has won numerous prestigious accolades, including seven Filmfare awards.

Celebrating her 45th birthday today, we have made a list of movies which shows her powerful acting with a context to society.

Black (2005)

Michelle, a young child with visual, speech, and hearing disabilities, was portrayed by Rani, and she left a lasting impression on audiences. The movie centres on Michelle’s bond with her professor Debraj, who is portrayed by Amitabh Bachchan. The film was produced and directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. 

The movie won all 11 of its nominations at the 51st Filmfare Awards, including Best Film and Best Film (Critics), Best Director (Bhansali), Best Actor and Best Actor (Critics), Best Actress and Best Actress (Critics), making it the most-awarded movie at the time.

No One Killed Jessica (2011)

Based on the real-life Jessica Lal murder case, it centres on Jessica’s sister Sabrina, who fights for justice after her sister is shot and killed by the son of a politician. Rani Mukerji plays Meera Gaity, a journalist who supports Sabrina Lall in her pursuit of justice.

No One Killed Jessica was directed by Rajkumar Gupta and also featured Vidya Balan in the lead role. At the 57th Filmfare Awards, Rani won Best Supporting Actress.

Mardaani (2014)

Rani portrayed the role of an intense police officer Shivani Shivaji Roy, who sets out to find a kidnapped orphaned teenage girl named Pyaari and uncovers the secrets of a human trafficking racket in the nation. The film is directed by Pradeep Sarkar and also stars Jisshu Sengupta, and Tahir Raj Bhasin.

Hichki (2018)

In this endearing film, Rani Mukerji plays Naina Mathur, a Tourette’s-affected woman who wants to be a teacher. Naina is an intelligent, enthusiastic, and dedicated teacher to her students. Her uncommon disease, however, is coupled with an involuntary vocal difficulty in which she frequently makes a loud noise resembling two hiccups in a row, making her an easy target for mocking, particularly in the classroom. Hichki was directed by Siddharth P. Malhotra.

Mardaani 2 (2019)

Rani Mukerji reprises her character, a woman police officer Shivani Shivaji Roy. In this sequel, Shivani sets out to catch a 21-year-old psychopathic rapist and murderer, Sunny, who kidnaps young women. The film is helmed by Gopi Puthran and also stars TV actor Vishal Jethwa.

Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway (2023)

Inspired by the story of Sagarika Chakaraborty and her husband in Norway in 2011, Rani Mukerji portrays the character Debika Chatterjee whose two children are taken away by the Norwegian authorities during a child welfare visit, unable to get custody of her children she decides to fight the government.
