Helen Slater defended Milly Alcock and Supergirl amid low box office returns. The former Supergirl star recalled her debut as Kara Zor-El while praising Alcock’s portrayal of the character.
What did Helen Slater say about the new Supergirl movie?
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Slater commented on the 2026 Supergirl movie. She said, “I loved the new Supergirl film, I thought Milly Alcock was astonishing — fierce, strong and great comic timing!”
Alcock’s Supergirl posted disappointing box office numbers, earning $38 million domestically. It did not meet the studio’s expectations of earning at least $50 million, and may cost the studio even more. The film follows Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El, who was previously introduced alongside David Corenswet’s Superman and goes on a quest for vengeance alongside an alien orphan named Ruthye.
Slater’s Supergirl was a spin-off of Christopher Reeve’s Superman films and released in 1984. She was about 18 years old when she landed the role of Kara Zor-El. While preparing for the role, she recalled the training regimen that lasted nearly four months and led her to gain 15 pounds of muscle.
She signed a contract for three Supergirl movies. Ironically, that movie also did not perform well, earning only $14 million domestically during its theatrical run. The planned sequels were ultimately canceled. She said, “I know it didn’t do well because we didn’t make the second and third film.”
However, she has continued to appear in DC adaptations over the years. She played Lara-El, Clark Kent’s Kryptonian mother, in Smallville and later portrayed Eliza Danvers, the adoptive mother of Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl, in the CW series. She also reprised her role as Supergirl in a cameo appearance in 2023’s The Flash.
