Armed man fatally shot by Brentwood officer while resisting arrest, police say

A Brentwood officer shot and killed a man police say grabbed a high-powered rifle while resisting arrest during a Christmas Eve night traffic stop.

The police shooting happened at about 10:55 p.m. in the area of Balfour Road and Foothill Drive, police said.

Officers pulled the man over because they suspected he was driving under the influence, the department said.

While speaking with him, the officers developed probable cause to search the vehicle, which resulted in them finding a loaded, high-powered rifle, police said.

Officers tried to arrest the man, but he physically resisted, refused to follow verbal commands and ultimately grabbed the rifle, police said.

One officer responded by firing their weapon, striking the man at least once, police said. The man died at the scene. His identity was not immediately released, but police said he was in his 40s.

No officers were seriously injured, police said.

The police department and the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office will conduct parallel investigations. Police said body-worn camera footage and in-car camera footage will be released at a later date.
