Why are there so many large herbivore species in Africa compared to the rest of the world? – Londolozi Blog

If you have read any of my other blogs, you will know I enjoy leaning towards the more scientific topics, and this one is no different. It normally starts with a question a guest asks me that I couldn’t answer as well as I would have liked, and that is when the research begins. Last week an American guest asked me why Africa has so many large herbivores compared to America.

If you go on a drive around Londolozi one cold, crisp morning, it is easy to see elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, rhino and hippo, just to name a few. Few places on earth still support this many large herbivores living side by side. Across North and South America, Europe and much of Asia, the great mammals that once dominated the land have largely gone. Africa is the last real stronghold of big terrestrial mammals, holding onto an ecological community that once had parallels across much of the globe. So why Africa? The answer goes back millions of years.

A breeding herd of elephants made their way towards the water hole we had stopped at. The herd was approximately 30 strong, and they all filtered their way through, drinking in batches. The afternoon light mixed up with the unsettled dusk caused a beautiful scene.

A Long Evolutionary Arms Race

Africa has been home to our ancestors for millions of years. Long before modern humans came along, early hominins were already walking these landscapes, slowly getting smarter, more social and better at hunting. So for Africa’s large mammals, humans were never really a new threat. Generation after generation, elephants grew more wary, buffalo became formidable defenders of their herds, and antelope sharpened their senses, their speed and their vigilance.

Every step forward by early humans was met by the animals adapting in turn. Africa’s wildlife evolved right alongside an increasingly capable predator that happened to walk on two legs. By the time Homo sapiens appeared around 300,000 years ago, much of the continent’s wildlife had already been shaped by millions of years of coexistence with our ancestors.

The Great Expansion

Around 60,000 to 70,000 years ago, the main wave of modern humans moved out of Africa. When they reached Europe, Asia, Australia and eventually the Americas, they ran into animals that had never come across a predator this intelligent and this cooperative. And these continents were full of giants.

North America had mammoths, mastodons (elephant-like ancestors), giant ground sloths weighing a couple of tonnes, enormous bison, horses, camels, giant beavers and short-faced bears. South America had giant glyptodonts (prehistoric, car-sized relatives of the modern armadillo), more elephant-like ancestors, giant llamas, massive ground sloths and sabre-toothed cats. To these animals, humans were something completely unfamiliar. Unlike lions or wolves, people could work together over long distances, build better and better weapons, use fire and hunt with a persistence nothing else could match. A lot of species simply hadn’t evolved the behaviour needed to deal with this new kind of pressure.

The Great Megafaunal Extinction

Between roughly 50,000 and 10,000 years ago, much of the world’s large mammal life disappeared. Australia lost nearly all of its giant marsupials. Europe lost woolly rhino, giant deer and plenty of other big mammals. North and South America were hit hardest of all, losing somewhere around 70 to 80 per cent of their large mammal genera in a short stretch of evolutionary time.

Scientists still debate how much of this was down to human hunting and how much to the changing climate at the end of the last Ice Age. Shifting temperatures certainly altered habitats and put many species under strain. But one pattern keeps showing up. Wherever modern humans arrived for the first time, large mammals soon started to vanish. The timing is so consistent across so many continents that most researchers now land on humans playing a major role, with climate change working alongside the hunting and habitat shifts rather than explaining it all on its own. Africa had its climate swings too, but its wildlife had already spent millions of years adapting to both a changing environment and an ever more capable human hunter.

Nature’s Specialists

There is another reason Africa holds this much diversity, and it comes down to how the herbivores share the same ground. Watch a typical Londolozi clearing for long enough, and you start to see it. Impala pick delicately at leaves and fresh shoots. Wildebeest crop the short grass. Zebra take the tougher, longer grass, which opens up fresh growth for the fussier feeders behind them. Giraffe browse high up in the canopy. Elephants feed almost everywhere, from grass to bark to roots and branches. Kudu go for shrubs and woodland leaves, and buffalo do well on the bulk grasses. Instead of everything fighting over exactly the same food, each species has carved out its own niche. That sharing out of resources is what lets so many big herbivores live side by side, each one making a living off a different part of the same patch of bush. The result is one of the richest large mammal communities left on earth.

Predators Shape the Landscape Too

Africa’s predators play their part in keeping this balance too. Lions tend to go for the bigger grazers like wildebeest, zebra and buffalo. Leopards work the medium-sized prey, using thick cover and trees to their advantage. Cheetahs rely on speed and take smaller antelope out in the open. Spotted hyenas mix hunting with scavenging and take whatever the ecosystem offers up. Because each predator leans on different prey, different habitats and different tactics, no single herbivore species gets to run away with the place and crowd everything else out. Predation, competition and a varied landscape keep the whole thing in a balance that has taken an enormous amount of time to settle into.

A Living Window into the Past

So when you watch a breeding herd of elephant crossing the Sand River, or giraffe feeding next to zebra and wildebeest on a winter morning, you are looking at something that has become genuinely rare. This is about as close as we can get to the great mammal communities that once stretched across much of the planet. The wildlife here isn’t just the product of modern conservation. It is the product of millions of years of shared history between the animals and the people who walked alongside them, a history that was interrupted far more gently here than anywhere else.
