LeBron James is heading to the Eastern Conference, and the Detroit Pistons suddenly have another major obstacle standing between them and the NBA Finals.
James has agreed to sign a two-year, $8 million contract with the Philadelphia 76ers, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. The deal reportedly includes a player option, giving James control over whether he returns for the second season.
The agreement has not yet been formally announced by the 76ers.

James may no longer be the nightly scoring machine who terrorized the Eastern Conference during his prime, but he remains one of the NBA’s smartest and most influential players.
The 41-year-old averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds across 60 games for the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2025-26 season. He finished the year with a 26.2 percent usage rate, evidence that he was still carrying a significant offensive role deep into his 23rd NBA season.
James has now appeared in an NBA-record 1,622 regular-season games while producing career averages of 26.8 points, 7.5 rebounds and 7.4 assists.
Philadelphia finished 45-37 last season and earned the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference. The Sixers were a middle-of-the-pack team at both ends of the floor, finishing 17th in offensive rating and 16th defensively. Adding James gives them another elite decision-maker, a playoff-tested leader and someone capable of controlling games without needing to dominate the shot count.
