Hundreds gather in Houston after fatal ICE shooting

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Houston’s East End on Tuesday evening with a clear message for Immigration and Customs Enforcement: “Get out.”

The vigil drew U.S. Reps. Al Green Christian Menefee and Sylvia Garcia. along with Houston Council member Alejandra Salinas and other officials, who joined demonstrators in remembering Lorenzo Salgado Araujo.Just hours before, he was fatally shot by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in Houston’s East End. The Department of Homeland Security said Araujo was killed Tuesday morning during a “targeted enforcement operation to arrest an illegal alien.”

But Tuesday night, demonstrators made clear they want more.

“Full rights for all immigrants,” some signs read. “Que se largue Trump”—roughly, Get out Trump—read another.

The majority of the signs, however, included some variation of “ICE out of Houston.”

Green told the crowd, which police estimated at 700 people, that he has requested a congressional hearing into the case.

“People have a right to know. People have a right to judge. People have a right to make a decision,” Green said. “Nobody is illegal in this country because of where you’re from or how you look.”

Multiple unmarked police cars and vans and mounted patrol were alongside the crowd.
