    Out of all the sales that have come and gone this summer, only a handful really standout as being elite and worthy of some serious set-aside time. There’s Nordstrom’s iconic Anniversary Sale, Zara’s mind-boggling everything-must-go sale, and, of course, *the* SSENSE sale. But none get whispered about among fashion girls quite like Reformation’s once-yearly sale, which, as luck would have it, started today. 

    Every year around this time, Reformation secretly launches a mega round of discounts, with the date and time always changing slightly to surprise the brand’s biggest fans. People plan for weeks leading up to it, hoping the items they’ve been eyeing will get the markdown treatment. Well, I’m here to tell you that it’s time to check your shopping carts for 30%-off prices. That, and tell you exactly what it is that you should buy now that red slashes have been dealt out. 

    To prepare for the annual shopping event, I stopped into SoHo’s store ahead of the sale and got a sneak peek at some of what it would eventually include, from floral dresses and sets to tank tops and denim. I even got to try some on. Below, see the items I took into the dressing room with me and shop more of my finds from Reformation’s just-launched 30%-off sale.

    No matter how good the photos are, detailed the descriptions are, or visually appealing the website interface is, shopping online will never ever compare to the simple act of trying something on. Why do you think the pandemic led to so many outlandish purchases? No one could try anything on first, and everyone was too exhausted to return anything. Unfortunately, depending on where you’re shopping from, you might not have the privilege of living in close proximity to every store you’re eyeing something from. That’s where I come in.

    Exhibit number one is Massimo Dutti, Zara’s elevated older-sister brand that specializes in clothing, shoes, and accessories for people who want their clothes to do the work for them by making them look chic without any effort. Think linen separates, satin slips, tweed outerwear, and flats and heels that look and feel like designer but rarely cost more than $200. This season’s offering is one of the Spanish retailer’s all-time best.

    Without a store in the U.S., though, you’ll have to either cross over into Montréal or Toronto in Canada or board a flight to Europe in order to test its pieces in real life. Well, you can do that or follow my lead by ordering a monstrous haul of the brand’s new summer pieces to try on at home.     Welcome to Let’s Get a Room, a series where editor Eliza Huber heads to the dressing room to try on pieces from your favorite retailers, buzzy items, and new collections. Think of this column as a detailed guide to the pieces that are actually worth buying and the ones that, unfortunately, looked better online—no returns necessary.

    I spend a lot of my time shopping in New York City, but there are certain stores I have to keep myself from stepping foot inside in order to keep my bank account in the green. One such place is Saks Fifth Avenue, a staple of the NYC shopping scene where finances go to die, not necessarily because everything’s pricey, but because it’s all utterly irresistible. Alas, sometimes you have to break your own rules. Or at least, that’s what I’m telling myself given that I did, indeed, walk into Saks this week and subsequently spent a total of three hours scouring the store’s seemingly endless offering. 

    Naturally, with a selection as good as the one at Saks, I couldn’t possibly just look at my favorite pieces from the bunch. I had to try them on, too. So, to make the damage more worthwhile, I decided to turn my shopping experience into the latest installment of my monthly column Let’s Get a Room. That way, I can use work as an excuse for my reckless behavior and everybody wins.     My first trip to the dermatologist since the start of the pandemic resulted in my derm not being happy with me—just as I predicted. In short, he said that in the last two-ish years, I’d spent far too much time in the sun and far too little time applying and reapplying sunscreen. And he was right. When the weather permitted, I spent hours lying in the sun on my rooftop. When I wasn’t doing that, I was hanging out in a park (socially distanced, of course) or running outside—all either sans sunscreen or with very little sunscreen on. 

    Suffice it to say I left that appointment on a mission to finally take care of my skin, starting with my SPF routine. As someone who spends a lot of time scrolling on TikTok, my mind went straight to sunscreen of the tinted variety. Thus, I set out to find a tinted sunscreen that gave me a no-makeup look while protecting my skin from damage.

    First, I called on Debra Jaliman, an NYC-based board-certified dermatologist, to give me the low-down on sunscreen in general. “Sun damage is cumulative,” Jaliman tells me. “Even on a rainy day, you will get ultraviolet damage because the UV light goes through the clouds. That’s why it’s important to wear sunscreen every single day, rain or shine.” According to her, there are three rules of thumb for purchasing and using sunscreen: 1) Stick to an SPF of 29/30 or higher, 2) use about a half teaspoon of product, and 3) reapply every two hours (more if you sweat or go swimming). Tinted sunscreen, tinted moisturizer with SPF, or sunscreen that’s not tinted—none of that really matters. Instead, it’s all about the three things mentioned above. Well, that and the concentration of zinc oxide, which Jaliman says should be above 9%, especially if you have sensitive skin.

    With a wealth of knowledge behind me, I test-drove eight tinted sunscreens, many of which are in heavy rotation on my For You page. There’s EltaMD’s UV Daily Sunscreen, which Hailey Bieber has shared on her TikTok page (check out this Vitamin C she also uses). And, of course, there’s Supergoop! Glowscreen, which has a cult-like following of its own. But despite what Beauty TikTok might have you believe, those aren’t the only two tinted sunscreens on the market. In fact, neither received my number-one ranking.
