Considering all they do for you, your feet deserve a breather. Cooling your feet also helps regulate body temperature, so summer sandals are a win-win.

Some slides were made for the locker room, while others could walk you from the beach to the country club. We tapped style experts for their favorite pairs of men’s sandals to buy now, along with top-rated picks from our favorite retailers.

“Suicoke makes some of the coolest premium sandals out now,” says Nordstrom men’s fashion and editorial director Jian DeLeon. “Our exclusive version of their Depa V2 sandal adds a checkerboard pattern to the durable nylon strap, available in an ’80s-inspired black and white version, or my personal favorite, a more muted black and charcoal gray.”

“The Chaco Chillos not only feature an adjustable strap up top, but the footbed is ergonomically designed to promote a healthy body alignment,” DeLeon says. “And of course, they’re comfortable from the first wear.”

“A classic sandal that has a cult following among Grateful Dead fans and outdoors-obsessed menswear enthusiasts, the Keen Uneek’s bungee cord upper ensures a custom fit to your foot,” DeLeon says.

Although known more for their cult favorite boots, Dr. Marten’s also makes a selection of sandals in their signature style. These leather sandals are the perfect balance of casual and chic with adjustable straps and AirWair soles for comfort.

Outlasting trends, the trusted German brand has been outfitting American feet for decades. Birkenstocks remain a staple that combine comfort, utility and style.

Hand-stitching and exceptional comfort make Olukai’s leather flip-flops a customer favorite.

These sleek leather Anthony Veer leather slides provide the comfort of traditional slip-ons with a trendy touch making them ideal for home wear or warm weather outings.

Tried and true, Nike’s Benassi slides are perennial favorites for their ease and affordability.

Adidas has outfitted generations of men in water-friendly footwear. The nostalgia factor is tough to beat.

Comfortable, versatile and indestructible, Birkenstock Arizona Evas are a beach and poolside must-have.

Keen’s Evofit One is a favorite among outdoorsmen for its versatility and comfort, whatever the day has in store.

Chaco’s Z1 consistently gets high marks from hikers who put them to the test out on the trail.

The Hoka One Ora Recovery Slide 3 “looks like a time machine that came from the future just to make your feet even more comfortable,” DeLeon says of this pair, meant to help runners recover. “Its forward-thinking design has even served as the inspiration for luxurious runway reinterpretations.”

Another brand that has held the line on form and function in the face of trends, Teva makes go-to footwear for all variety of outdoor adventures.

With memory foam insoles and a relaxed fit, these Dockers are a customer favorite for extraordinary comfort and affordability.

“Merrell’s Hydro Mocs are what I would call a more grown-up Croc,” DeLeon says. “The sleeker design and fun colors toe the line between dad-inspired style and things dads actually wear.”

“I can’t recommend the Birkenstock Boston enough; I have a ton of pairs myself and wear them everywhere,” DeLeon says. “The closed toe gives them a bit of an elegant touch, but like any Birkenstock, they truly get more comfortable after each wear.”

  • The coolest clothing with UV protection, according to extremely outdoorsy people | CNN Underscored

The coolest clothing with UV protection, according to extremely outdoorsy people | CNN Underscored

This article is part of Spring Fashion Month, where we’re breaking down your must-have fashion pieces for the next few months. From denim jackets to comfy sandals, we’re asking editors, influencers and experts about the go-to pieces they wear through spring and beyond.

Sunnier weather means finally planning that Instagrammable picnic or camping trip or taking your rollerblades for a spin. Maybe it simply means leaving your house for the first time in months like a squirrel tasting freedom after hibernation season. Not to rain on anyone’s parade (or aforementioned picnic), but large bodies of research show the more time spent outdoors, the higher your chance of skin damage. And while a tan might create the illusion of a “healthy glow,” there’s really no such thing as a safe tan, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. That’s why we’re stocking our wardrobes with garments infused with sun-safe SPF/UPF to give your precious skin that extra level of protection so you can safely load up on all the mood- and immunity-boosting vitamin D.

“UPF stands for ultraviolet protection factor, which measures a garment’s ability to block your skin from all UV rays,” says Dr. Aanand Geria, a board-certified dermatologist. He describes UPF as being similar to sunscreen’s SPF, the sun protection factor, with the main difference being that SPF only applies to UVB rays, while UPF applies to both UVA and UVB rays. “Most clothing will give some degree of protection from UV rays, however, certain pieces are specifically tested and marketed to supply ample protection,” he says.

The mechanism behind UPF clothing is simple: Dr. Shasa Hu, MD, FAAD, associate professor, Dr. Philip Frost Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery, says she is a “huge fan of UPF clothing” [because] they provide additional protection either through weaved fabrics, or those that are impregnated with special chemicals that filter out UV rays. “Because of this, they don’t last forever, usually only 50 to 80 washes depending on the quality. UPF clothing is definitely a better alternative to just sunscreen for outdoor activities or ppl with a very active lifestyle,” she says.

While you’ll still have to slather on your sunscreen to protect exposed skin on your body, the following UPF/SPF-infused clothing are bound to be your full-time BFFs this spring and summer, recommended by the outdoorsy folks who wear it most.

“Coolibar has options for kids and men so it’s very popular for families,” says Hu of one of her all-time favorite UPF brands. This practical quarter zip is a great way to get some impromptu ventilation with its quarter zip closure and relaxed fit. It comes in 12 summer-friendly colors from Fresh Mint to Pacific Blue Heather.

“This is a light, relaxed-fit hoodie with moisture-wicking and odor-control technology,” says Geria. “It’s perfect for a long day in the sun with UPF 50+ protection and thumb holes that allow protection to extend over your hands.”

“These shirts are a beach day staple with their lightweight design and wicking, sun-shielding fabric that host UPF 40 protection from the sun,” says Geria. “They also have cooling features such as mesh-lined back vents to allow air to flow and keep you from overheating.”

“My favorite UPF piece of clothing is also the ultimate dad shirt: the Columbia PFG Tamiami II,” says Kevin Cortez, a commerce editor and avid hiker. “Built for fishing and generously sized, it has mesh-lined back vents for letting your body breathe. This shirt has Columbia’s Omni-Shade technology, which provides UPF 40 protection and wicks away moisture faster than most cotton tops. It comes in short- or long-sleeve, but I prefer the latter for extra sun protection. Plus, when you need to air out those arms, you can roll up the sleeves and keep them up via built-in tab holders. It’s perfect for muggy and overly bright days, and it’s almost always on sale.”

Whether you’re splashing around on a surfboard or lounging ashore, this long sleeve is bound to come in handy all season. “This is technically a rashguard designed for surfing, but it has a somewhat looser fit, so it actually functions more like a regular t-shirt,” says Todd Plummer, a writer, avid traveler, and outdoors enthusiast. “It has a soft, cotton-like feel, and the added benefit of sun protection. If I’m going anywhere tropical, I’m packing a few of these and wearing them all day long.”

“Houdini makes terrific, sustainable clothing, and it tends to rely on natural fabrics over synthetics. Its Desoli Tee is no exception,” says Cortez. “Made with merino wool, this t-shirt regulates temperature as needed—cools when you’re hot, warms when you’re cold. Merino wool is naturally microbial, so you won’t stink through it when you sweat, and it’s also got a UPF rating of 30.”

We’re so obsessed with this packable parka with UV protection. Not only available in a men’s style as well, it’s got UPF 40+ and is water-repellant. It’s truly a must-have travel essential too.

Hu says she (and many of her more athletic patients) resorts to Athleta for its fashionable designs. It doesn’t get more stylish — and sun-safe! — than this easy, breezy dress for extra coverage and UPF 50+ protection at the beach or boardwalk. It has two handy side pockets, comes in five colors, and is available in regular, tall and petite sizing.

“This loose-fit, UPF 40+ protective shirt from Lululemon is the perfect option for active wear that also protects your skin against UV rays,” says Geria. “Its fabric is lightweight, has some stretch to it, and is quick-drying. It also features thumbholes to help extend protection down to your hands.”

“Columbia has great protection with SPF 50,” says Tammy Rosales, a permanent makeup artist and skin cancer survivor. “I was worried about the long sleeves, however I was happily surprised they’re not hot even in the 90 degree Fahrenheit weather. [I like that] they have different colors to choose from.”

“Magellan Outdoors also has a great variety of colors and styles,” says Rosales. “Red was the shirt I chose to try out in the beginning and again was happily surprised. They also offer styles with thumb openings to cover your hands, which is truly very important to me due to the skin cancer recently.”

“Athleta is one of my favorite activewear brands, especially for leggings,” says Amanda Oliver, a commerce editor and avid outdoorswoman. “My go-to pair is the Salutation Stash Tights, which are made with soft and breathable UPF 50+ material and feature a comfy high waist and convenient side pockets.”

I’ve owned these durable Eddie Bauer leggings for several years, and while I tend to take them on the trail and my travels most frequently, they look as good as the day I got them. They’re made of a UPF 50 material that’s anti-odor and super stretchy, and they have a handy pocket at the waistband to store my belongings.

While this roomy, breezy short sleeve with UPF 40+ is designed for running, it’s comfy enough to lounge in all day. I love its classic fit that can be dressed up or down, as well as its next-level sweat-wicking properties that ensure I stay dry in sweltering heat.

This Uniqlo cardigan with UV protection technology is so cute, I barely think of it as a utilitarian piece of clothing designed to protect me from the sun. I have it in gray because it matches with everything no matter the season, but I plan on investing in more colors since it’s such a functional and on-trend cardigan.

The best part about this versatile crop? It has a built-in shelf, so I can wear it as a bra or a top during low-impact workouts. It’s made with UPF 50+ sun protection, and looks as great paired with a pair of biker shorts for a workout as it does a pair of high-waisted trousers for a night out. There are few items in my closet that get as much wear as this Athleta top, and I love that it has a high neckline for extra support.

If I’m going to be sweating up a storm, I’ll often opt for a pair of capris over full-length tights. With their UPF 50+ sun protection and cropped length, these capris are ideal for sweaty and sunny days. Plus, the combination of compression and a high waist keeps me feeling nice and tucked in so I can take on whatever the day throws at me (which is usually a very high-impact workout and some errands).

I struggle to find a bra supportive enough for high-intensity activities from outdoor running to bootcamps, but this Athleta bra made with UPF 50+ material is nothing short of a godsend. Its front zip makes it super easy to take on and off (read: no Houdini-like struggles), it has adjustable straps for customizable support, and a back keyhole for extra ventilation. The cups mold to my chest so perfectly it feels like it was made for me. I feel a sense of loss every time it’s in the wash.

“It’s not easy to find cute clothing with built-in SPF, but this brand has some great staple pieces,” says Katherine Garbarino, founder of Girls Living Well and a beauty, health and wellness enthusiast. “This top keeps me protected during my walks. Sunscreen tends to make me sweat more so this is a great option.”

Bodysuits are the IT fashion piece right now, and this sun-friendly version makes saluting the sun that much more safe. “I love Athleta’s Transcend Bodysuit because it can be worn on its own or layered on breezier mornings (it can get chilly in South Florida — or at least it feels that way when you haven’t lived in New York for a few years),” says Marci Robin, a freelance writer and editor. “It has a UPF 50+ rating, and it’s made with wicking fabric, which makes me feel less sweaty than I actually am (which is very).”

“My partner and I both love Outerknown — and have way too many of their blanket shirts for post-ocean swimming and after surfing (thanks Kelly Slater!). Their women’s Active Tank is the best for hiking, running, and then jumping into the waves immediately after,” says Silvie Snow-Thomas, a public relations executive and frequent hiker. “I especially love that it’s made out of regenerated fishing nets and other nylon waste for a fully sustainable tank.”

For a dressier option that provides ample coverage and protection, look no further than this on-trend skort. “My favorite garment is the IBKUL skort,” says Alison Blackman, editor in chief of advicesisters.com who lives on the beach. “This UPF 50+ skort looks like a skirt but has shorts underneath. It’s great for golf or any activity and I like it because you can go from the beach to the bar without looking sloppy.”

Little ones tend to require a little extra protection, and that’s why Sara Goldberg, a frequent pool goer, ops for this cute little number with UPF 50+ for her daughter. “This SPF long sleeve bathing suit is clutch for long days in the sun,” she says.

“This hat is made of a soft, lightweight fabric that is super comfortable, quick-drying, and durable,” says Geria. “It offers UPF 50+ protection for your head and face to help maintain healthy skin. This hat is adjustable to fit almost any head shape, and as a plus, it’s foldable for travel and storage purposes.”

It’s no secret our face is most susceptible to sun damage than any other part of our body. Layer up with this multifunctional hat complete with UPF 50 and an adjustable drawstring to keep it in place. “I also really like the SCALA UPF 50 hats, which have a lot of colors and varieties,” says Blackman.

You can’t have fun in the sun without ample protection from a wide-brim hat. “My favorite hat now is the Montecito by Wallaroo Hats that looks like a cross between a fedora and a rancher hat,” says Blackman.

  • Amazon reviewers are obsessed with this $26 spring dress — so we tried it ourselves | CNN Underscored

Amazon reviewers are obsessed with this $26 spring dress — so we tried it ourselves | CNN Underscored

This article is part of Spring Fashion Month, where we’re breaking down your must-have fashion pieces for the next few months. From denim jackets to comfy sandals, we’re asking editors, influencers and experts about the go-to pieces they wear through spring and beyond.

It’s no secret that in recent years, Amazon has evolved into a somewhat surprising mecca for affordable fashion stapes and standout pieces that tend to go viral. Need proof? See: the inimitable Amazon coat, the eye-catching and easy-to-wear nightgown dress and oh-so-cozy lounge set — just to name a few.

Now, we’re calling the next Amazon outfit that’s sure to be a craze this spring: The MSBasic V-Neck Dress which we tried out in our quest to test the best spring dresses from the mega-retailer, and it rose the to the top of the pack as our (and readers’) favorite frock for the new season.

It honestly doesn’t get easier — and more flattering — than this simple V-neck dress, which is available in lots of basic colors and interesting patterns. The style emphasizes all the right places, the material is soft, it’s a great length and you don’t have to worry about wearing any special undergarments.

In terms of silhouette, this dress is universally flattering. With a simple fit-to-flare shape, it hugs the waist without feeling constricting, and the wrap-top, V neckline shows just the right amount of skin for any bust size. A classic short sleeve and covered back means that any type of undergarment or bra will work underneath, and you won’t have to worry about concealing a strap. The hemline, which hits just above the knee, is perfect for spring weather and doesn’t feel too short.

The fabric is a blend of polyester and spandex that’s soft to the touch and plenty stretchy — though we’d avoid throwing this one in the dryer; the tag notes it’s hand wash only.

    underscored msbasics dress 2

And no matter your personal style, you’ll find that MSBasic has you covered: The dress is available in 39 colorways and patterns in sizes S through XXL on Amazon (though not every option is available in every size); Solids include blue, green and purple, and there are plenty of pretty florals, polka dots and even a few tie-dye looks. Prices range from $26 to $32.

But perhaps the best attribute of this dress is the versatility: Dress it down with a denim jacket and sneakers for a breezy day of running errands, or throw on some cute wedge sandals for a more elevated look. There’s no extra frills or complicated details here — the MSBasic dress is the embodiment of “throw it on and go,” and it’s sure to hit just right no matter the occasion.

  • The 14 comfiest sandals, according to podiatrists and fashion experts | CNN Underscored

The 14 comfiest sandals, according to podiatrists and fashion experts | CNN Underscored

This article is part of Spring Fashion Month, where we’re breaking down your must-have fashion pieces for the next few months. From denim jackets to comfy sandals, we’re asking editors, influencers and experts about the go-to pieces they wear through spring and beyond.

It’s that time of the season when your favorite sandals are looking worn out and you’re ready for a new everyday pair. But let’s face it, the shoe department can feel like a reasoning and decision-making exam. Not only are you juggling price and size, but also the style versus comfort dilemma. Do you pick the fashionable pair that will reside in your closet forever? Or the comfortable pair you won’t be seen wearing outside the house?

When choosing a sandal, you want one that is both comfortable and fashionable. After all, nobody wants to stress about aching feet, chafing or blisters. So we consulted with fashion experts and podiatrists to find the best sandals for comfort and style enthusiasts alike.

Who doesn’t love this classic double-strap design? Dr. Elizabeth Daughtry, who specializes in podiatric medicine, loves the adjustable straps, cushioned suede footbed and especially the sole on this sandal. “The EVA sole is supportive and has an anatomic cork and latex footbed,” she says. “This allows for arch support and molding to the individual’s foot structure. EVA is an elastic material that is considered one of the best shock-absorbing materials on the market today.” The brand makes a style for men too.

Take everything great about the Santa Barbaras, but make them vegan! Whether you follow a vegan lifestyle or not, these slides are stylish, comfortable and supportive. Daughtry recommends them for travel because they’re light and easily packable.

As if the modern futuristic style isn’t enough, the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) actually gave this sandal their own Seal of Acceptance. “Aside from a cushiony sole, the bottom of the sandal is shaped like the bottom of a boat,” Dr. Sophia Solomon says. “This allows your foot to rock from heel to toe in one smooth motion and minimizes shock on the knees and ankles.”

According to Solomon, “Birkenstocks are still one of the best options out there due to a few attributes. The deep heel cup and arch support stabilizes the heel, prevents excess pronation and distributes your weight across a larger surface area. The metatarsal pad helps alleviate forefoot pain, or metatarsalgia, by shifting the weight further back in your foot.”

Ah, how we’ve loved the return of the Croc! Jane Francis, a multidisciplinary designer with 35 years of experience in the fashion industry, vouches for them too. “The mix of high and low is always a winning formula in fashion,” she says. “I love how wearers of all ages and genders can personalize their Crocs.”

These Oofos sandals have stuck around for good reason: For those with heel pain (and those without), the foam cushion provides support and reduces shock. Plus, the Ooriginal thong style, which is an Underscored editor favorite, is made with a nonslip footbed making them suitable for wet conditions. Rain or shine, you don’t need to worry about sliding around.

If you walk a lot and don’t want to trade style for comfort, check out these Cole Haan sandals. Walking long distances on New York City pavement is what led Carolina Obregón, a lecturer at the Parsons School of Design, to seek out these gems.
We have yet another Birkenstock recommendation, this time for the securely-fitting Milano model, which comes in plenty of solids and patterns. Stone Hubbard, footwear and accessories design technologist at the Fashion Institute of Technology, loves the suede cork base. “I like the Milano Birkenstock because they are stylish like the classic Arizona model and have an orthopedic cork and jute footbed,” he says. “They provide great arch support and fit securely with the back heel strap.”

Have you heard the term “gorpcorp“? It’s a trend that focuses on utility and functionality. For fashion, leather and textile expert Tjacob Hooker, who holds an MFA from the Fashion Institute of Technology, Chacos are the way to go. “I gravitate towards more ‘gorpcorp’ brands because of their respect for the human body,” he says. “Their design ethos is committed to ergonomics and continual use.”

How could something so fashionable be comfortable? These part-espadrille, part-wedge sandals are the lift you need to elevate any look. Obregón describes them as elegant enough for any occasion, but you can still walk for miles and miles.

If you’re looking for a sandal that can be easily dressed up, you’re going to want to check out the Naot Kayla style. It does have a small heel, but your feet won’t be aching. The cork and latex footbed conforms to your foot while the deep heel cup adds stability. According to Dr. Timothy Oldani, a foot and ankle specialist, stability is really important when considering a sandal. “The more stable, the less movement, which means less pain and opportunity for blisters,” he says.

This is considered a hiking shoe, but it’s just as stylish off the trail. Hooker loves the unibody style of this durable slip-on. For an environmentally conscious choice, there’s the vegan-friendly version called Hydro Moc with Bloom.

For fashion designer Alla Eizenberg, she loves the Sorel Kinetic Wedge Sandals for their neat look, reasonable price and high quality. “I wore them on my recent vacation to Italy and South France,” she says. “I walked around extensively and they endured the medieval cobblestone streets with grace.” The neon accent colors and chunky platform style make a remarkable team.

You can’t go wrong with this Nike staple. “The Jordan brand successfully straddles the line between fashion and function, loved by both athletes and the everyday consumer,” says Angela Finochio, a Fashion Institute of Technology classroom assistant. You’ll want to wear these sporty, lightweight sandals everywhere — if you aren’t already. “The rise of athleisure fashion increased the popularity of the slide silhouette, a casual style now found in many high fashion collections,” she says.

  • Where to buy all your men’s spring fashion essentials, according to experts and editors | CNN Underscored

Where to buy all your men’s spring fashion essentials, according to experts and editors | CNN Underscored

This article is part of Spring Fashion Month, where we’re breaking down your must-have fashion pieces for the next few months. From denim jackets to comfy sandals, we’re asking editors, influencers and experts about the go-to pieces they wear through spring and beyond.

With new seasons comes the opportunity for a fresh start. Whether you’re planning to get some deep cleaning done or set new goals for yourself, spring is the perfect time to take a step back and take a closer look at the things in our life that we often set to autopilot, including your wardrobe.

“Spring is defined by new beginnings,” explains NYC-based art world professional Jack Nelson. “It’s a moment to reintroduce vibrancy and light into our days, and it’s an opportunity for us all to consider our personal redefinitions or our style evolutions.” Hazel Morley, Bonobos’ vice president of design, echoes this sentiment. “As the weather starts to thaw, it’s a great time to be more playful and add some color or a fun print into your wardrobe.”

“Take the time to properly evaluate what you can eliminate from the year prior and assess the new pieces you want [to] usher in,” explains Todd Snyder, fashion designer and founder of the eponymous fashion label. “A best practice is to start with refreshing the quintessential wardrobe staples … Once the foundation is set, then look to layer on the more conversational and trend-forward pieces.”

It’s also good to keep in mind the “unpredictable nature of transitional seasons,” explains NYC-based fashion designer Max Kitabayashi, who shares that “smart layering is key” when it comes to effective spring dressing. But most importantly, a spring wardrobe refresh should be an opportunity to have fun with fashion. “I think versatility and quality are things to always look for when shopping for new pieces,” explains professional stylist Fred Kim. “But men’s fashion has come such a long way and I’d like to encourage men to explore brighter colors and bolder silhouettes.”

    underscored huckberry 2

Ahead, we’ve consulted stylists, influencers, editors, designers and other sartorial enthusiasts on their favorite brands and pieces, and compiled it into this guide aimed at helping you craft your perfect spring wardrobe.

    underscored buck mason

Buck Mason is a menswear brand all about the very best essentials, well loved for its commitment to craftsmanship and consistent high quality. Each of the brand’s designs are produced in the States and are “a riff on an iconic American staple.” So it’s no surprise that when it comes to the most essential of basics — T-shirts — Buck Mason is where our experts look. “I have tees from Buck Mason from 2015 that feel and fit just as new now,” raves Kim. The brand’s attention to details is clear from the universally flattering fit and durable fabric choices.

    underscored uniqlo

The Japanese casual wear brand has been quickly embraced by people around the world, and for good reason. Beloved for its high-quality clothing at impressively affordable prices, Uniqlo is unmatched when it comes to timeless and functional staples that outperform similarly priced competitors. Recommended by multiple of our experts as their go-to destination for T-shirts, the brand’s range of high-quality, comfortable options — think different colors, silhouettes and fabrics — makes it so that there truly is something for every guy.

    underscored BYLT

Spring dressing is all about a smart transitional wardrobe, and Bylt specializes in just that. The men’s clothing brand excels in comfortable, durable basics that are meant to be worn throughout the year and in all sorts of occasions — from the gym to the office to date night and everything in between. The brand’s tees are a favorite of Roy Lee’s, our operations and strategy lead. “It’s admittingly an Instagram purchase,” he shares. “But I’m glad they targeted me because the fit is great,” he explains, and “the quality is amazing.”

    underscored banana republic

Timeless and sophisticated yet still accessible, Banana Republic is well known for its range of casual to formal clothing. The brand’s tees are particularly standout, especially given the variety of styles, fits and colors available. It’s a favorite among both experts and everyday guys we spoke to, who were all impressed with the quality and overall range offered by the brand. “I’ve been super impressed with Banana Republic lately,” shares Kenger. “It’s great to know you can count on them for basics.” Mike Bruno, our vice president of commerce, suggests stocking up when the brand runs sales, sometimes with markdowns at 50% off.

    underscored todd snyder

Founded by designer Todd Snyder, the brand was inspired by Snyder’s love of New York City and its fashion, along with the desire for quintessential wardrobe staples that could help men dress smarter. You’ll find well-tailored, beautifully designed and expertly crafted pieces across product categories, though the brand’s commitment to fit and quality is particularly standout when it comes to its button-downs.

    underscored j.crew

“Button-downs immediately make me think of J.Crew,” shares Smith. “And no, not because they are inherently a preppy article of clothing, but because J.Crew has been doing them forever … Dare I say they’ve mastered them?” The timeless brand is a go-to for just about any type of classic clothing you’re looking for. Effortlessly stylish while consistently functional and high quality, the brand’s range of button-downs is crucial when it comes to such an essential piece. “They offer more cuts, patterns and colors than can fit in a single wardrobe, so there is truly something for everyone,” Smith explains.

    underscored Charles Tyrwitt

British clothing brand Charles Tyrwitt specializes in formal menswear, and over the past 37 years has amassed a global fan base that stretches far beyond its original London storefront on Jermyn Street. Timeless yet stylish with a “pinch of British charm,” as founder Nick Wheeler describes, Charles Tyrwitt focuses on high-quality, responsible pieces that’ll make you look like a million dollars sans the luxury prices. In fact, the brand believes in the quality of its pieces so much so that it guarantees them for up to six months — in any condition and no questions asked. A CNN Underscored staff favorite, it’s a perfect brand for stocking up on button-downs for the office or for a special occasion.

    underscored Perte D'ego

If you’re looking for totally unique, beautiful button-downs, look no further than Perte D’ego. The new menswear brand is based out of Noida, India, and focuses on ethical working conditions and sustainability. It’s even established its own zero-waste studio where designs are made in small batches — restocks happen only when there’s sufficient demand. “The craftsmanship of their embroidered button-downs is unparalleled, and at a price point that isn’t going to send you into distress,” shares Nelson. “This is an excellent brand for the person who wants to experiment with patterns because their textiles have a timeless quality to them,” he explains. “Every shirt that I have from them has served me more well than I had expected, largely because they’ve achieved vibrant patterns that can be styled so universally.”

    underscored reiss

The British fashion brand is well loved for its high-quality essential pieces — many of which have a high-fashion twist. While its classic-contemporary styles can get pricey, there is a good amount of more affordable options on the brand’s website. In short, our experts and everyday guys both agree that Reiss shouldn’t be overlooked as a go-to destination for when you’re looking to spend a little more on something that looks great and will last. Especially when it comes to the brand’s button-downs.

    underscored huckberry

Founded in 2010, Huckberry is an American online retailer and one of the best places for outdoors-loving guys to discover high-quality clothing, gear and accessories that work equally well for everyday life and the actual outdoors. The brand has a couple of its own products but is best well known for curating the very best products from independent and innovative designers and other brands. So it makes sense that when it comes to smart, weatherproof outerwear, Huckberry is the place to go.

    underscored alex mill

Alex Mill has what many would call a cult following. Backed by the expertise of Old Navy and Madewell founder Millard Drexler — father of Alex Mill’s founder Alex Drexler — and former J.Crew and Madewell creative director Somsack Sikhounmuong, the New York-based brand is loved for its classic styles, high-quality fabrics and unmatched attention to construction details. Alex Mill is also known for its wide use of fun and bold yet classic colors, making it a wonderfully appropriate brand for any transitional, perfect-for-springtime jackets you might be on the hunt for.

    underscored quince

San Francisco-based direct-to-consumer brand Quince is focused on offering luxury-quality products without the luxury markup. By avoiding the additional expenses that are part of the traditional supply chain model — like wholesaling and distribution, for example — it’s able to keep prices low without sacrificing on quality and fair manufacturing processes. The brand is super transparent about the associated costs of each product, and even compares the cost of each of its products to that of similar brands as well as its traditional retail cost. While Quince is a popular brand for all types of sustainable clothing at a great price point, the markdowns on traditionally pricey items like cashmere sweaters and durable outerwear is absolutely worth calling out.

    underscored taylor stitch

San Francisco-based menswear brand Taylor Stitch was founded in 2008 with the goal of creating versatile clothing that’s meant to last far beyond a couple seasons. The brand’s commitment to quality and sustainable practices manifest in its use of premium materials and ethical manufacturing practices, to name just two components. The brand guarantees repairs or replacements for damaged or defective pieces for its entire lifetime. And its Restitch program gives you the opportunity to exchange gear for store credit — no matter the condition it’s in — so it can be repaired and passed on to a new owner.

    underscored bonobos

A favorite of Hunter Capobianco’s — our director of business development — Bonobos is a men’s clothing brand that’s best known for its range of well-constructed, high-quality pants, though it offers a really impressive collection of shirts, suits and basically anything you’d need in the apparel department. While the brand specializes in pieces that nail that business casual sweet spot, Bonobos is still a bit more colorful and playful than similar menswear brands, which makes it the perfect spot to head to when sprucing up your springtime wardrobe.

    underscored rhone

Rhone was founded in 2014 with the goal of creating clothing that looks as good as it performs. The brand prioritizes the use of high-quality materials and innovative construction, which can be seen in its range of casual wear, workout clothing and office-ready pieces that are deceptively comfortable and practical for all sorts of occasions. It’s the perfect destination for effortlessly stylish pants and shorts that’ll keep you easy and breezy even as spring turns into summer.

    underscored untuckit

While the rapidly growing clothing brand may be most well known for its casual shirts — meant to be worn untucked, hence the brand’s name — that’s not the only thing the New York-based brand absolutely nails. Simultaneously polished yet relaxed, Untuckit offers a range of apparel and accessories that are practical and smartly designed, particularly when it comes to comfortable pieces that can be worn both in and outside of the office. A favorite of Kim’s, the brand’s range of men’s pants and shorts are perfect for building up your collection of spring staples in the colors, sizes and even fits that work best for you.

    underscored COS

“Pants and shorts are usually my heavy hitters,” explains Smith, “also known as what gets worn the most.” Because of this, he prioritizes durability and versatility when shopping for these pieces. “I’m usually willing to shell out a bit more for a great fit and even better construction,” he explains. One of his go-to places to shop? COS. The brand, which was founded in London in 2007, is now part of the H&M group and has quickly become a popular destination for fashionistas worldwide. Its pieces skew modern and trendy while maintaining a minimalist and clean aesthetic that’s super versatile and perfect for when you’re stocking up on wardrobe essentials.

    underscored proper cloth

“Proper Cloth is my go-to place for dressier pants,” shares Vince Lee. The brand, which specializes in custom-made, super-stylish menswear pieces, makes going the bespoke route a lot more accessible than it’s historically been. Shop the brand’s site as you typically would any other online retailer and select from standard sizes, or place an order for picks in your custom size — you have the ability to completely adjust with 0.1-inch increments, different posture options and a whole lot more. Each garment is then made to order and shipped directly to you. If it doesn’t fit, free alterations or a complete reconstruction is guaranteed by the brand.

    underscored koio milo

We’re big believers in that some things are worth splurging on, and shoes are absolutely one of those things. Not only will a high-quality, well-constructed pair last you far longer than any mediocre shoe, but they’ll make everyday life a lot more comfortable and even easier. Koio has created some of the most impressive, durable shoes we’ve ever tested — don’t let the chic, minimalist design fool you. The brand combines premium materials with Italian craftsmanship for a range of stunning shoes that perform even better than they look.

    cole haan running shoes cnnu

Cole Haan has been revolutionizing footwear for nearly a century, and it shows no signs of slowing down. Loved for its ability to combine classic craftsmanship and iconic silhouettes with modern comfort technology and innovative designs, the brand is a go-to for many for how reliably high quality its range of shoes are. Whether it’s a flexible, lightweight dress shoe or the perfect loafer, it’s hard to go wrong with anything — particularly dressier shoes — from Cole Haan.

    underscored nordstrom mens spring fashion

We’re longtime fans of Nordstrom, so it’s no surprise that the online retailer is making this list. One of the best parts about shopping on Nordstrom is how easily you can browse and discover products from a huge range of brands, something that’s essential when you’re shopping for a product category as diverse as shoes. Fortunately, the retailer makes it a breeze to find everything you need and a whole lot more. Plus, Nordstrom’s return policy makes it easy to try out new brands or styles without having to fully commit. Which is, once again, super important when it comes to finding the perfect shoe.

    underscored G.H. Bass

Loafers are a perfect spring shoe — comfortable, easy to slip on, versatile for both formal and casual wear and truthfully an easy way to look a lot more put together. There’s no brand that does loafers like G.H. Bass, which was founded in 1876 with the goal of creating durable, stylish shoes that will last years and not just seasons. Its iconic Weejuns penny loafer has come to define the American shoe style, so it’s no surprise our experts recommend picking one up if you’re hoping to incorporate the timeless style into your spring wardrobe.

    underscored vessi

Founded by three Vancouverites in 2017, Vessi creates totally waterproof sneakers that don’t sacrifice on comfort or style. The brand’s patented Dyma-tex technology is integrated into the show’s lightweight knit material — no coating or chemicals involved. “I walk 2 miles to and from work each day,” shares Moore, “and I love these amazing waterproof sneakers … They’re lightweight, comfortable and designed to withstand walking in rain and puddles, and prevent wet socks.” Perfect for unpredictable springtime weather!

    underscored gap mens spring fashion

“Hats are a quick and easy way to add a pop of personality to any outfit,” explains Smith. “So naturally, you’ll want a color for every mood.” In what might seem contrary to being a massive, global brand, Gap focuses on a few yet universally popular hat designs made from high-quality fabrics, and offers them in a range of fun colors. Smith opts for and recommends choosing hats made from 100% cotton material for maximum breathability, a nonnegotiable when it comes to all-day comfort for when it gets warmer out.

    underscored melin_

Melin launched in 2013 with a collection of super-innovative, luxury, performance-focused hats that are loved by athletes and active people in general. “Whether I’m at the gym, concerts, hiking, at the beach or even swimming, I wear my Melin hats,” shares Roy Lee. “They have multiple shapes you can pick from based on utility or your personal preference, including different sizes,” he explains. “They’re remarkably durable, sweat-resistant and you can get them wet.”

Asos is most well known for its massive selection of products, which includes tens of thousands of items available from countless brands, in addition to its own in-house label. The cutest matching sets on Amazon, according to influencers | CNN Underscored

This article is part of Spring Fashion Month, where we’re breaking down your must-have fashion pieces for the next few months. From denim jackets to comfy sandals, we’re asking editors, influencers and experts about the go-to pieces they wear through spring and beyond.

There’s nothing we love more than an effortlessly stylish outfit — particularly one that doesn’t take a lot of thought and is versatile enough to wear year-round. Enter, matching sets. It’s impossible to scroll through social media without noticing just how many fashionistas are opting for the comfortable, chic and often monochrome look. The best part about the matching set trend? You can mix and match each piece with others in your wardrobe for countless outfit options — without having to pay double the price.

Ahead, we’ve consulted influencers on their favorite matching sets from Amazon. So prepare your shopping cart — it’s going to take some willpower to check out with just one of these perfectly on-trend picks.

An influencer favorite, this effortless yet super-on-trend set is perfect for just about any occasion. “I actually have this set in two colors, black being one of them,” shares content creator and influencer Dana Hasson. Style expert and content creator Greivy loves the pink, blue and green colorways, which she describes are “perfect to wear out for girls’ night or date night while on vacation.”

Style influencer and content creator Jasmine Elias loves this workout set, which is available in over 21 different color options. “Let’s just say it made me a believer,” she raves. “The top has the perfect amount of support for the girls, and the leggings are so flattering!” It’s perfect for the gym, Elias explains, or you can throw on a button-down over it “for perfect fit to run all your errands in.”

“I love this set because you do so many different things with it,” shares influencer and content creator Tyla-Lauren Gilmore. “I can dress it up with boots or dress it down with sneakers,” she says. “I usually throw a long trench coat over it and I can wear it all fall, winter and spring.”

What comes to mind for many people when they think of matching sets, this comfy, oversized option includes shorts and an adorable half-zip sweatshirt, both made from a thick, cozy fleece material. Pair with a crossbody bag and you’re ready for any and all errands the day might bring.

“From the office to a night out on the town, this set is not just sexy in its simplicity,” explains Laurelle Schiffer, a content creator and style influencer. “The versatility is key.” She recommends pairing it with a statement blazer for a slightly more formal, wow-worthy look.

“The different stripe patterns throughout give this sweater some extra interest,” says Wendy Sy, content creator and founder of Style Meets Story. “It’s so easy to throw this on with the coordinating shorts and instantly have a casual yet put-together outfit.”

“It looks like linen but is softer and more comfortable, without the scratchiness that sometimes comes with linen,” says Elias. “If there’s one thing I always pack for a trip, it’s this set,” says Gilmore. Hasson agrees, calling this the perfect “going to the beach throw-on piece.” With warmer weather just around the corner, she says, it’s perfect for wearing over a swimsuit along with cute beach shoes.

This fuzzy lounge set is made up of not two but three pieces, and we wouldn’t be surprised if it’s all you ever end up wearing at home. In addition to the tank and loose-fitting pants, it comes with a long cardigan that’s perfect for chillier days.

“I love this set because it’s the easiest way to look put-together,” says Gilmore. “It’s my go-to set for when I have no idea what to wear, and it looks good on everyone.” She loves styling this effortlessly fashionable option with sandals, a pointed boot or even a slingback heel.

“This charming two-piece set is perfect for picnics in Central Park, Sundays with the girls, or just neighborhood strolls,” says Schiffer, who loves that the two pieces can be easily styled together or separately. Swap out the maxi skirt for your favorite high-rise Levi’s shorts and some cowboy boots for the perfect casual summer look. Or for an edgier look, pair the skirt with your favorite oversized band tee, combat boots and a leather jacket.

Perfect for dressing up or down, this monochrome set includes wide-leg pants and a tank with cute button detailing on the back. Style with heeled sandals and jewelry for a simple yet effective dressy look, or with sneakers and a baseball cap for a stylish, easygoing everyday look.

Greivy recommends this set option, sharing that the two colors as part of the color-blocked design are super on-trend. Where would she wear this to? “I’m thinking brunch in a fun, warm destination,” she explains. “I am trying to escape the gloom of winter and welcome the sun!”

It’s hard not to love a coordinating activewear set, and the on-trend ribbed material and flattering long-sleeve scoop-neck top make this option a winner in our books.

“I would wear this either for a travel day or when working from home,” says Hasson, calling this set cozy, cute and perfectly airport chic. She recommends styling it with a headband, sneakers or slippers and gold hoops.

If you’re looking for an adorably feminine two-piece set, this crop top and skirt set is perfect for dressy, warm-weather occasions. The range of colors is impressive as well, so you can opt for timeless neutrals or fun, bright colors like lavender or mint green.

“We all know about the Issey Miyake Pleats Please set,” says Schiffer. “This is the perfect lookalike if you’re styling on a budget.” She adds that 2023 is “the year of jewel tones and bold outfits,” making this gorgeous color a trendy option. “This crinkle set feels like one of the best-kept secrets,” Elias says. “Pair it with sneakers and it feels like you’re wearing pajamas but somehow look put-together.” She recommends this shorts version over the pants version if you’re petite.

“I like the kimono style of this pink pajama set, and the feather-lined sleeves are so fun,” says Sy. “Wear it at home just to feel fancy or pair it with heels and statement jewelry for a night out.”

This yellow-green shade screams summer, and there’s nothing like a lightweight tank and shorts set to make getting dressed in hot weather just a little easier. Plus, the 100% cotton material will guarantee you stay cool throughout the day.

“You can’t go wrong with a matching swimsuit set, and this one stands out to me because of the shiny mint green color,” says Sy. “I’d wear this with a flowy white sheer cover-up and retro round sunglasses for a beach or pool day.”

This knit set is a perfect example of how versatile two coordinating pieces can be. Together, it’s an adorable knit dress. Separately, you have a flattering everyday sweater and a bodycon skirt that can be paired with any type of top.

“I’m obsessed with this color,” says Greivy. “It’s so soothing and feminine, the material is soft and comfortable but doesn’t look or feel careless.” She recommends layering this set with a trench coat and cute sneakers, so you can stay comfortable while still looking chic.

The Chanel-inspired tweed set is perfect for achieving that classically elegant look without spending a whole lot.

Ugg vs Amazon: We put these favorite slippers to the test | CNN Underscored

This article is part of our series Battle of the Brands, in which we compare category-leading products to their counterparts to determine which are actually worth your money.

There’s one brand that has dominated the slipper game for years: Ugg.

But the Ugg Scuffette II slippers come with a hefty price tag, and Ugg isn’t necessarily the only option. And just like we tried and loved this highly rated Amazon knit pullover sweater set and nightgown dress, we also saw that Amazon also sells a lookalike memory foam slipper option, from the brand Donpapa, for a quarter of the price.

Since savvy shoppers know it’s only a deal if the product is worth it and holds up, I set out to compare them, alternating between each for a week.

Not only do the longer-lasting premium materials offer more heat absorption for a more cozy feel, we found the Uggs offer a better overall fit (especially for those with smaller feet) that justifies the price for those who wear slippers daily.

We found these slippers do a good (not as a great as Uggs) job at keeping toes toasty while also being surprisingly comfy thanks to the full faux-fur lining and memory foam cushioning, making them ideal for those who don’t wear slippers often and want something budget-friendly.

    Faux fur, rubber sole

    Sizes

To make sure you end up with a new pair of slip-slips (as I lovingly call them) that fits on the first try, you might have to order a different size than you would normally go with depending on which brand you decide to order. For the Ugg Scuffette II, I found that they ran big and I ended up sizing down (I’m typically a 6.5-7 but wore a 6 in these slippers). Although I was in a full size smaller than I sometimes wear, there was still room at the heel. They were snug overall, but this just helped keep the slipper on as it loosened over time with walking.

For the Donpapa version, I wore the Medium (7-8 US) and it was definitely bigger. I could’ve gotten away with sizing down if a size Small was available, but this version was just fine too — nothing a pair of cozy socks couldn’t fix. But something to note before ordering this style: The brand tells shoppers to ignore the size number at the bottom of the sole, that “it’s the manufacturer size, not on behalf of US size.” So only go by the Medium, Large and X-Large and ignore any numbers in the product pictures (which might get confusing).

The Donpapa slippers are a great budget option, but their lack of size options makes it harder to find the perfect fit.

    Comfort and warmth

Considering that I work from home and I live in a shoe-free household, I get a lot of wear out of my slippers. So I can feel the difference between just an okay pair of slippers and one that is going to disintegrate between my toes in a matter of weeks very quickly. As soon as I tried on the Donpapa pair I was surprised at how silky the faux fur felt — and throughout the entire shoe, not just around the rim like some cop-out slippers. Plus, you can feel the memory foam cushioning with each step, and although neither base was particularly hefty, Donpapa’s version was slightly thicker.

But then there’s Ugg’s style, with its suede exterior and cloud-like shearling made from real sheep or lamb fur. Not only does this lining do a better job of keeping my feet warm for longer periods of time, but I also don’t have to wonder if I’ll get weeks or months before I wear it out. This quality lining can easily stand up to a year of abuse from my feet before showing signs of starting to crack under the pressure.

Ugg's premium materials keep feet warmer for longer and will last over time.

It’s great if slippers have a nice plush lining. But that isn’t going to keep me safe from the ice blocks taking up residency as my toes. I need some serious fur deep on the inside of my slipper, whether it’s real or faux fur, as insulation to keep heat in.

Overall, Ugg’s shearling interior locked in more warmth for a longer period of time, keeping my feet cozy at all times.

    Material and details

Both of these slippers are waterproof, which is an essential feature in the world of slippers. Nobody wants to ruin a good pair of house shoes with soggy feet after getting out of the shower. That isn’t a worry with Ugg’s suede upper and shearling interior. But where Donpapa’s rendition has Ugg beat is that their slippers are machine-washable. However, these rounds of washing come with benefits and downsides. Pro: You get to wash away any potential foot sweat, dirt and odor. Con: Each machine wash is removing potential life and time from the faux fur.

But one area that both of these shoes are lacking is that they are definitely slippers — and only slippers. Neither of them are house shoes because both of their soles are on the flimsy side. Ugg, of course, has much better solutions to both of these available for a higher price, namely Tasman, Coquette and Disquette.

At first glance and wear, these slippers seem very similar.

Both of these slippers achieve the primary goal immediately: defrosting your feet and immediately warming them up. But then Ugg’s genuine shearling does a better job at trapping and insulating your foot’s heat than the counterpart’s faux fur lining. Plus, the sheep and lamb fur tend to hold up better against the daily wear than the faux fur lining.

Although slippers provide immediate warmth, the Ugg Scuffette II is a hands-down winner when it comes to women with smaller shoe sizes or those looking for a higher-quality material due to its better overall interior sheepskin. However, if, unlike me, you’re more of a casual slipper wearer, I can’t say it necessarily warrants spending nearly four times as much on them. But if you’re hoping for a low-maintenance, machine-washable option or a sturdier sole, the Donpapa style is your best bet of the two.

We tried all the most popular spring dresses under $40 on Amazon — these are the best | CNN Underscored

This article is part of Spring Fashion Month, where we’re breaking down your must-have spring fashion pieces. From denim jackets to comfy sandals, we’re asking editors, influencers and experts about the go-to pieces they wear through spring and beyond.

It’s easy to be an Amazon fashion skeptic. Even though we consider ourselves to be expert shoppers, almost all of us have purchased T-shirts, pants, jackets, dresses, sunglasses and more, and though the item may have had a ton of reviews, once it arrived we were completely disappointed. So that’s why we took it upon ourselves to call in and try on the most popular spring dresses on Amazon under $40. Even though some of our picks have more than 50,000 reviews, we were surprisingly disappointed in quite a few of them, so check out the ones that did actually make the cut below.

At first, I was hesitant to order this dress in its Coffee color based on my skin tone, but I was shocked when I loved it! It wasn’t see-through or too thin, but at the same time this dress was lightweight and comfortable enough that I could move freely while feeling secure. It came just as the pictures online displayed, and I was surprised that even for someone who is 5 feet 2 inches, the height and waist of this dress fit perfectly. The one part about this dress to note was that even though I ordered a small, the bust was a little bigger than I was expecting, and the sleeves were also a bit baggy. However, because this dress is intended to be flowy and less form-fitting, I really didn’t mind! I’ll still be wearing it for events this spring and summer. — Madison Yerke, social strategist

It honestly doesn’t get easier — and more flattering — than this simple V-neck dress, which is available in a lot of basic color and interesting patterns. The style emphasizes all the right places, the material is soft, it’s a great length and you don’t have to worry about wearing any special undergarments. Just a breezy spring dress that could be dressed up with cute sandals or down with sneakers and a denim jacket — what more could you ask for? — Chelsea Stone, senior editor

I’m a little bit of an Amazon fashion skeptic, but I’m pleasantly surprised by how much I’m enjoying this dress. I have no idea why they called this print Black Leopard, because it’s really more of an abstract, almost monarch butterfly vibe. But it’s soft to the touch, and the combo of the length and high neckline make it feel fancier than the average sundress — it could be great dressed up with accessories for a garden wedding or a nice alfresco dinner. I would have liked a zipper to make it a little easier to get into or out of — it’s a lot of fabric to wrangle — and belt loops would have been nice for keeping the included belt attached. But it can go in both the washer and dryer, which is great for the inevitable grass stains I will probably get on it. — Rena Behar, copy editor

This is the perfect T-shirt dress to just throw on and run out of the door. It pairs just as well with sandals as it does with sneakers and is super comfortable. The best part? Pockets — deep ones! While it’s rayon and polyester, it feels like cotton and is breathable. This will definitely be a wardrobe staple. — Lindsey Smith, associate editor

There were so many things I loved about this dress. I loved the adjustable waist wrap and how I could change it to a deep V-neck, a light V-neck or a cover-up. It was super lightweight and breathable and the length and bust fit according to the size chart. There was plenty of room for movement and the colors were everything as described in the photos. With its adjustable fit, it can be dressed up or down and I can totally see it for an event or as a beach coverup once I find myself somewhere with warmer weather. — Madison Yerke, social strategist

This off-the-shoulder dress is so flattering! I was nervous at first because it looked so small out of the bag, but it stretches so much and is really comfortable. The double slits are my favorite part and will be great once the weather gets even hotter. I will say, this dress does wrinkle easily so if you’re packing it for a trip, make sure to have an iron or steamer on hand. — Lindsey Smith, associate editor

This is extremely cottagecore — I feel like I should be pairing it with a giant straw hat and matching picnic basket. It’s fun though! The fabric feels softer than I expected it would, and the florals are much more vivid in-person. The lining also does a good job of making sure the thin fabric isn’t transparent, even if you aren’t wearing a bra (which may be necessary with the way the sleeves and back are designed). The tie back is super cute and easy to tie on your own, though you can also tie it looser and then tug the dress on. Also a big fan of the fact that it’s machine-washable, even if it does need to be line-dried. — Rena Behar, copy editor

The Yathon sleeveless dress has all those little details I look for in a spring dress. It has a flattering V-neck, adjustable spaghetti straps, an A-line and a gently ruched top. I’m always a little worried about sizing when choices are S, M, L and XL, but the large worked because of those easily adjustable straps. It’s not the highest quality cotton, but for the price, it’s soft, comfortable and definitely not see-through. You can also throw on a belt to upgrade your look for work or a more formal gathering. But my favorite part? The pockets. — Tobey Grumet, reviews editor

My expectations for finding a great-fitting dress on Amazon were pretty low, but this one from Dokotoo actually scored very high marks. It’s easy to slip on over your head, but also comes with a discreet side zipper if you need it. The fit was very comfortable overall; not itchy thanks to the full bodice lining, and lightweight and loose enough to still give me full range of motion in my arms. And the banded designed waistline still cinches in tight enough to create some shape and contrast the fullness of the skirt.

While I don’t always love short dresses, I liked that this one had full coverage in the back but still hit right above my knees in the front. I also love the open-back design, though it does mean you’ll have to go braless or opt for a sticky bra. The only caveat of this dress is the neckline. I’m all for a deep V, but this one is perhaps a little too deep and went all the way down to the bottom of my sternum at first. For me, it was nothing a tactically placed safety pin couldn’t fix, but those with larger chests or who like to be more covered-up might want to be wary that the cut is a tad more revealing than most of the Amazon photos let on. — Jillian Tracy, editorial coordinator

Lululemon Align vs. a $23 Amazon lookalike: We put these cult-favorite leggings to the test | CNN Underscored

This article is part of our series Battle of the Brands, in which we compare category-leading products to their counterparts to determine which are actually worth your money.

Between the self-care explosion — from yoga and Pilates to meditation — and the pandemic’s resultant work-from-home situation, women are wearing leggings longer and more often than ever before. As such, we’ve become more judicious about which leggings are actually worth investing our money in. Fit, comfort, design and style are musts, as are name brand and cost.

In recent years, Lululemon’s Align Pants have become a cult-favorite item thanks to their “buttery soft” fabric that makes wearing them 24/7 an easy decision, and a fit that skims the body rather than pinches or droops. Need proof? The pants have more than 20,000 reviews and the #Lululemonalign hashtag on Instagram has more than 9,000 posts attached to it, ranging from influencers’ workout videos and try-on sessions to on-the-go street shoots. While reviewers are hard-pressed to find fault in Align, the price would likely be high on the “cons” list — each pair typically runs between $98 and $128.

Equally popular on Amazon are Colorfulkoala’s Buttery Soft High-Waisted Yoga Pants, which have a whopping 46,000 positive reviews — hundreds of which liken the pants to Align — and a much (much) cheaper price tag at $23 per pair.

What’s so great about these leggings, which we named the best workout leggings? They are soft and slinky and literally skim your curves, from waist to ankle. Second, there’s the fabric. Called Nulu, the material is über-soft, sweat-wicking and has a four-way stretch. You can move in these pants — whether you’re doing hot yoga or hopping in and out of your car doing errands.

Our pick for the best budget leggings of the year, the Colorfulkoalas are available in more than 40 colors and are just as soft as Lululemons, but at a fraction of the cost.

Lululemon’s Align and Colorfulkoala’s Buttery Soft are both ultra-popular pants designed for yoga. The chief selling point of both options is the super-soft fabric they’re made of.

Align is comprised of the brand’s proprietary “Nulu” fabric, which is a combination of nylon and lycra that is sweat-wicking, stretchy and, as I’ve mentioned more than a few times, buttery soft. I’ve been an Align devotee for years and can attest that the leggings are great for low-impact exercise like Pilates or yoga — and that they’re so comfortable (and flattering) that I end up wearing them the whole day after my morning workout. Unlike other yoga pants, the Align fabric doesn’t constrict, squeeze or pinch your body, instead it skims over your shape without creating any sort of muffin-top situation.

Lululemon's Align leggings (left) and Colorfulkoala's leggings (right)

Having tested Colorfulkoala’s Buttery Soft pants as well, I can say that the nylon/spandex fabric is the closest I’ve ever seen to the Nulu softness, but it’s not quite as buttery as the Align and they have a sheen to them. I didn’t mind the sheen at all, but the Align leggings definitely have a softer, matte texture. Interestingly enough, the Colorfulkoala pants are brushed on the interior and that texture is nearly exact to Align — so they do feel identical on the inside of the leggings, but on the exterior they are shinier.

Given Align’s matte texture, the fabric can be prone to catching lint or stray hairs, which is more visible on darker colors and patterns. I didn’t experience this with the Colorfulkoala leggings, however, because the fabric’s slight sheen doesn’t attract debris.

More about that fabric: Align’s Nulu fabric is completely opaque. Maybe it’s attributable to the brand’s “see-through pants scandal” from a decade ago, but you’re never going to see someone’s underwear during a downward-facing dog if they’re wearing Align. And nowadays, Lululemon is also double-lining its lighter hues to triple-confirm the coverage (which results in a thicker, cozier feel to the legging). Undies aside, the fabric density also camouflages the other bits you might want to conceal (read: cellulite, a tummy roll, whatever).

The same cannot be said for Colorfulkoala’s coverage. I tried the leggings in both black and a lighter mauve pink hue and while the black had me covered, the pink was very see-through. I actually wore the pants to Pilates and spent much of the class feeling overexposed. Not just due to my underwear lines being visible, but also those aforementioned bits that I’m not dying to show off — the pant fabric is so thin that, especially in a lighter color, you can see every detail of your tush, legs and beyond. I did appreciate that the waistband is lined, which provides decent tummy control.

Two pairs of Lululemon's Align leggings (left) and the Colorfulkoala leggings (right)

In terms of design, both pants are pretty much identical, with flat, exposed seams cut exactly the same way. I didn’t experience any drooping or sagging with either pair — both stay put all day long. The Align waistband is a bit more generous, coming in at 3/8 inches longer than the Colorfulkoala pants’ and thus providing slightly more tummy coverage. Align leggings also have a hidden waistband pocket for keys, cash or credit card, which is a thoughtful detail.

Both the Lululemon Align and Colorfulkoala High Waisted Yoga Pants are very comfortable to wear all day long. I wasn’t racing to take either pair off after working out, which is a good sign! While their fabrics aren’t identical, both are incredibly soft, and given that their designs are so similar, they fit the same way, contouring your curves rather than pinching or squeezing. Yes, the Colorfulkoala pair are thinner, which affects coverage, but it doesn’t affect comfort at all.

Lululemon’s Align leggings are the sure bet and worth the investment. Yes, you can buy four to five pairs of Colorfulkoala pants for every one pair of Align, but the quality of Align far outweighs the competition. I’m writing this story while wearing a pair of five-year-old Align leggings that still look and fit like they’re brand-new — the ROI is legit.

Ultimately what it came down to for me is that I can’t endorse Colorfulkoala’s inconsistent coverage. While the black pair did provide opaqueness, the fabric is still thinner than Align’s Nulu, and that left me feeling more vulnerable, especially as I was doing squats and lunges on a reformer machine. The Align fabric is bulletproof when it comes to coverage and leaves me feeling more confident when I wear them. As a mom of four in my 40s, that is worth the price of admission.

If budget is a concern, however, Colorfulkoala is a decent legging to buy, but I’d advise sticking to the darker colors and patterns to be safe.

  • We tried all the most popular spring dresses under $40 on Amazon — these are the best | CNN Underscored

  • The 20 best sunglasses under $50, according to people who are always outside | CNN Underscored

The 20 best sunglasses under $50, according to people who are always outside | CNN Underscored

This article is part of Spring Fashion Month, where we’re breaking down your must-have fashion pieces for the next few months. From denim jackets to comfy sandals, we’re asking editors, influencers and experts about the go-to pieces they wear through spring and beyond.

Nothing completes a beachy outfit quite like a proper pair of sunglasses. From wider frames that block the sun from every direction to statement sunnies that provide a pop of protection on overcast days, there’s no shortage of sunglasses that keep you feeling — and looking — fresh. But between unpredictable waves, sand that seems to work its way into nearly everything and simple forgetfulness, shelling out half your paycheck for a pair of sunglasses doesn’t always make for the wisest investment.

That’s why we reached out to people who spend nearly every waking moment at the beach or outdoors for their favorite sunglasses under $50 that provide, ahem, specs well beyond their price point. From polarized lenses to durable, on-trend frames, you can shop them all right here.

Goodr sunglasses have become synonymous with superior value for their lightweight frames and too-Goodr-to-be-true price point. “Goodr’s OG Sunglasses are the best no-frills pair that money can buy,” says Kevin Cortez, a commerce editor and avid hiker. “They don’t slide or bounce off of your face while you’re out roaming, and because they’re polarized, they help reduce glare and block harmful UVA and UVB rays.”

“These aviators look exactly like the Bottegas,” says Ashley Mosseri, a podiatrist in Florida and frequent beach goer. “Like people have legit thought they were Bottegas. I appreciate expensive sunglasses but with the way I treat them I cannot invest in expensive ones, so it’s nice to have these cheap ones that you can throw around and bring to the pool, beach, or walks and not have to worry.”

The cat eye trend is here to stay, and with nearly 11,000 ratings on Amazon (many of them extremely positive), you can be sure they’ll hold up season after season. “They’re lookalikes for a pair that Hailey Bieber wears and they look good on everyone,” says Mosseri.

For a pair of sunnies that are lifeguard-approved, grab this funky visor style with a matching cord that helps them stay put. “As a lifeguard, I’ve had the opportunity to wear a lot of different sunglasses in my line of work,” says Charlie Ou Yang, a senior lifeguard contractor. “I recently had the chance to try out this pair of retro polarized sunglasses and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised.”

It turns out looking high-end designer luxurious can cost the same as a couple lattes. “I love the classic shape of this Loewe sunglasses dupe,” says Ally Cohen, a Florida-based beach goer. “It makes me feel like a cool and trendy mom, they’re light on the face, and they don’t leave a mark on my nose bridge.”

I fell in love with these sunglasses the second I saw them on shelves, and now I can barely take them off after my Hot Girl Walks (even when I’m indoors). The bright coral color adds instant life to any dreary outfit, and they’ve been durable enough to not scratch or break when I pop them in my pocket. The square shape is also super chic and on-trend. I get compliments on them the second I leave the house.

When I’m looking for a light pair of sunnies that feel weightless on my face while I run, I opt for my Sunskis. They’re super sporty, don’t fog up when I’m sweating, and I’ve been able to keep them in great condition for the five years I’ve owned them.

Whether I’m swimming laps or training for a half-marathon, I always make sure to have my Rheos nautical sunglasses on hand. They’re lightweight to an almost eerie degree, and they reduce so much glare I never experience any sun-induced headaches while wearing them. They come in so many chic color combos, but I love the black-on-black for a mysterious yet versatile vibe.

I once treated myself to a shopping spree at Zenni, and came away with one of my prized possessions. They rest comfortably above my ears (read: no temple squeezing), and they provide enough coverage to keep me from squinting during beach hangs and long walks in the sun. Thanks to their anti-scratch coating, they look good as new even though they’ve been around the world with me several times.

“I love a frame that has a retro feel without looking old-fashioned, and the lens and frame colors are just right on this pair,” says Todd Plummer, a writer, avid traveler and outdoors enthusiast. “The Maestro is one of this brand’s classic silhouettes, but the Maestro X is slightly larger and suited for larger faces like mine. I often lose, sit on or drop my sunglasses, so the $40 price point also feels right for something that looks good but I won’t be upset if and when they need to be replaced.”

“Growing up in San Diego in the ‘90s through the aughts, my eyes have become increasingly sensitive to sun exposure thanks to years of UV exposure-induced damage,” says Mia Maguire, a commerce editor, boogie boarder and body surfer. “These sunglasses are oversized, so they cover my entire eye region (which also helps prevent crow’s feet!), but the polarized lenses are also designed with a UV-protection coating, which is hard to find in under $20 offerings. I also love how these fit snugly around my face because they stay put when I’m hiking, biking, and swimming — even when I’m a bit sweaty, they don’t slide around.”

There’s no need to walk on eggshells around this durable pair — between their scratch-resistant coating and injection-molded cellulose propionate frames, you’ll be able to take them everywhere from hikes to swims.

“My current favorite pair is the new Morningside Polarized glasses because they come in a fun lilac hue (along with black and a brown tortoise-like style), but they still protect my eyes from the sun,” says Maguire. “These sunglasses fit around my fairly large head well, so I’m able to wear them in the water and during higher-intensity hikes, but they’re not so tight that they’re painful.”

“It took me a while to hop on the rectangular sunglass bandwagon (again, I also like my sunglasses to provide anti-wrinkle protection), but I finally caved when I saw these affordable specs,” says Maguire. “They’re current and stylish without looking desperately Y2K (another sartorial movement I plan on sitting out on altogether). They fit securely around my face and stay put when I’m bike riding or jogging outside.”

“While I may be averse to the Y2K resurrection, I’m all for the retro vibe when it comes to shades reminiscent of styles inspired by the ’70s, and these $40 frames are current favorites,” says Maguire. “I don’t wear these when I’m biking, jogging or swimming because of their oversized profile, but I do love to wear them on short hikes and at the beach because they offer a lot of coverage and actually shield my eyes from the sun.”

With its marbled frame made of recycled plastic, this summer staple is a sustainable yet sensible bet. “I love these sunglasses,” says Haley Grumet, a flight attendant and frequent traveler. “They’re polarized, look great and are very durable.”

“I will rave about Goodr sunglasses to anyone who will listen,” says Kristine Thomason, a health and lifestyle journalist and certified personal trainer. “As an avid runner, I’m always on the lookout for solid sunglasses that will stay in place while I log miles, along with polarized lenses to protect my eyes. Goodr sunglasses check all of those boxes, and they’re budget-friendly at just $25 a pair. In addition to running, I wear these on hikes, to the beach, or really any outdoor activity.”

For a pair of sunnies that look far more expensive than they actually are, look no further than Specs. “The shape feels so fashion-forward and fresh,” says Vanessa Powell, a Santa Monica-based fashion editor and outdoors enthusiast. “I can’t believe they’re not $200 sunglasses. I’m a firm believer that a good pair of sunglasses can elevate any outfit — even athleisure. Le Specs does that for me.”

“I get so many compliments on my Privé Revaux sunglasses,” says Powell. “I’m an accessories person so I always have a pair of sunglasses in every bag and in my car. They feel super luxe and are always on trend without breaking the bank.”

These oval sunglasses make the perfect addition to any outfit with their dozen varieties and mid-century rounded silhouette. “I love this style of sunglasses and they come in a bunch of colors too,” says Katherine Garbarino, a beauty, health and wellness enthusiast.

“As a surfer, sailor and beachgoer, floating sunglasses are a must,” says Elizabeth Sneed, a surfer. “Blenders Eyewear is comfortable, cute, practical and affordable. These lightweight frames and polarized lenses are excellent in or out of the water. Pro tip: If you’re in the ocean as much as I am, add a cord to your sunglasses and put the cord in your ponytail to prevent them from falling off while you’re in action.”

  • These cheap Amazon swimsuits actually won’t fall apart. Trust us, we tried them | CNN Underscored

These cheap Amazon swimsuits actually won’t fall apart. Trust us, we tried them | CNN Underscored

This article is part of Spring Fashion Month, where we’re breaking down your must-have fashion pieces for the next few months. From denim jackets to comfy sandals, we’re asking editors, influencers and experts about the go-to pieces they wear through spring and beyond.

Swimsuits are one of those things where you’re either a person who drops $100 on an adorable suit you’re counting on wearing for the next few years or someone who gladly buys $20 suits that are…OK, we guess? But what about a cheap swimsuit that is high quality, actually cute and won’t disintegrate when you first wear it?

Amazon, naturally, has a ton of options for inexpensive, hugely popular (we’re talking tens of thousands of reviews, people) swimsuits that shoppers swear by. But given how untrustworthy Amazon reviews can be, we decided to test these swimsuits on our own. Did they all hold up? No. But the ones below definitely did.

This is an incredibly affordable bikini that is both trendy and flattering. While the material felt cheaper than the swimwear I usually buy, especially the padding, it was a comfortable bikini once I had it on. There is definitely a reason this is rated so highly among people with all body types. Having a pear-shaped body, I usually must buy separates because I need to order a size up on the bottoms, but a size 4-6 fit me well. Overall, this is a great option if you’re looking to save money. — Lindsey Smith, associate editor

Two words: tummy control! The ruching in the center of this Cupshe one-piece is convenient for people like me who, on some beach days, simply just want a little extra compression in that area. Overall, the suit is flattering and the quality is so good, that I truly can’t even believe it’s only $30. — Stephanie Griffin, social lead

These shorts are a good, quick option if you need a pair to throw on every once in a while. I love the pockets and they look decent, however, the material isn’t stretchy and the cut is a little more restrictive than I’d like at the thighs. The inner mesh isn’t as uncomfortable as some trunks I’ve worn, but I wouldn’t want to sit in a kayak in these for more than a few hours. Overall, these are a good pair of shorts if you need a swimsuit in a pinch, just don’t expect them to last season after season. — Kai Burkhardt, associate editor

This bikini is a great balance between style, functionality, coverage and a little sexiness. The fabric is double-layered, which means no sheerness and some added support, which I love. The one-shoulder cut is super cute, along with the side tie detail. The bottoms have a flattering high-waist cut but are a little cheeky, too. One thing to note — the bottoms hit below the belly button (which is accurate to the product pictures), so they won’t fit exactly at the waistline, if that’s what you’re looking for. Also, the top runs a little tight, so those with a larger cup size may want to size up. Overall, I’m impressed with the quality of the construction and material and I’m super excited to bring this suit with me on vacation! — Sophie Shaw, associate beauty editor

The Amazon Essentials swim trunk is good for the price, but just okay in the grand scheme of men’s swimwear. The 7-inch inseam is the perfect compromise for those who don’t love the overly long and baggy look for a suit, but don’t want to show too much above the knee. But that’s the high point. While the material is light and comfortable against the skin, it definitely feels cheaper compared to suits that are a hair more expensive — so this is more suited for those looking for a last-minute, I’m-not-going-to-wear-this-much option, as quality seems to be a bit lacking. And the print blends too much into the background, moreso in person than it appears to on Amazon. — Scott Simone, deputy editor

I’ve heard great things about Cupshe and after trying one of their suits for myself, I can confirm that the rumors are true! The material is so thick and soft and the padding and adjustable straps in the back really cinch and flatter you in all of the right places. I like it so much that I picked it up in a couple other colors! — Stephanie Griffin, social lead

I love swim trunks that I can also wear as regular shorts, and this understated Kanu Surf pair absolutely checks that box. The stretchy polyester material felt immediately comfortable and just snug enough to fit securely, and the cargo pockets feature plenty of room for my everyday carry. — Mike Andronico, senior tech writer

This year, I’m starting to slowly phase out my bikinis, and finding an age-appropriate one-piece that doesn’t make me look like I’m stuffed in a sausage casing has been tough. I especially like this Rxrxcoco bathing suit because its ruching falls in the perfect places to better enhance my torso (and hide that unsightly flat tire that may be visible when I’m sitting down). It also has adjustable straps to fit the bust area and comes in five sizes: small, medium, large, x-large and xx-large. I originally ordered a large because my bra size is a 34 DD, but it was huge on me, so I had to get the medium instead, which ended up being a perfect fit. I didn’t love the perfectly round bra pads, which, especially when the bathing suit was wet, were super obvious, but you can take them out if it bothers you. All in all, for under $50 and with all the different color choices, I would recommend this bathing suit for all kinds of body types. — Tobey Grumet, reviews editor

This Hodo swimsuit is so comfy, and I love the colors. The interior lining is nonabrasive, making it great for long periods of swimming, and the length is perfect for someone who prefers longer trunks (see: me). I can’t wait to wear these through all of spring and summer.  — Daniel Toy, copy editor

I ordered the Pink Queen Bikini Set and absolutely loved it. The swimsuit looks just like the photos online and the material was thick, quality, and strong-feeling. With such a light-colored top, I worry that swimsuits will appear see-through against my skin tone, but this one had bra padding and was layered and thick enough so that even the cream color did not show my skin. I found the bottoms to be true to size based on the sizing chart but did find that the bandeau top was a little bigger than my frame. However, the adjustable straps came in handy and were so convenient when I wanted to make the top fit better or just take the straps off completely. I loved the block colors and all the different color options and think it’s safe to say this swimsuit style will be added to my summer capsule wardrobe. — Madison Yerke, social strategist

I often feel like my swimsuits never fit my right, with too much room in the thigh and not enough room in the netting, but these gave just enough room in both departments. I ordered the green with a black waistband, which gave the shorts a sporty look and accentuated the color. Plus, the zippered pockets came in handy. I wore them to a spa recently and was assured my locker key wasn’t going to sink to the bottom of the hot tub. — Daniel Rathburn, associate programming editor

I feel super snatched in this one-piece that sucks you in, accentuates your curves and feels really secure. I found that the halter neck paired with the square neckline is incredibly flattering and gives this suit a feminine touch as compared to other one-piece options on the market. There are so many colors to choose from, too. — Kiana Murden, former associate lifestyle editor

I liked the design of this pair of Maamgic trunks. I typically only wear very simple or solid-color bottoms, but this pair felt like just the right amount of fun. The netting and fit were on the looser side, but they sat a little lower on my thigh than I usually wear. Believe it or not, the biggest downfall of this suit was the side pockets: I could barely fit my hands into them, much less a phone. — Daniel Rathburn, associate programming editor

I can’t say enough good things about this suit, which I’ve had for over a year now. Finding a bikini that properly fits my larger chest (I’m a 32H) is one of my life’s biggest struggles, but because of the billowing fabric, the top miraculously covers and fits everything. I got a medium in both the top and bottom and I never once worry about popping out. It’s completely family-friendly. I’m at the point now that when I want a truly comfortable bikini, this is the one I always reach for. — Rachel Lubitz, senior lifestyle editor

I was initially super excited to try this suit because it has SO many positive reviews of women claiming it “fits like a glove” and is “the highest-quality swimsuit on Amazon” — but since swimsuits aren’t a one-size-fits-all, you never really know, especially when it comes to Amazon. However, I can confirm it’s worth the hype and more! I ordered this suit on a Monday, and it was delivered to my doorstep on a Tuesday morning (gotta love Prime!). It indeed fits true to size and the high-waisted bottoms really suck everything in and offer so much coverage. The top comes with padding, adjustable straps AND ties that you can maneuver to make the top a little extra cheeky, if that’s your vibe. And if you haven’t already added this suit to your cart, it comes in more than 20 different colorways and patterns too. — Stephanie Griffin, social lead

Swimsuits with skirts can either look matronly or costume-y, and I’m elated to say that this one is neither. With horizontal stripes across the bust and a black skirt with matching shorts underneath, this is one of those swimsuits that you can feel completely comfortable going to the beach in and then maybe even a sandwich shop or grocery store afterward (well, if you’re already in Florida like I was). The silhouette hugs your curves and covers your hips and is an excellent choice if you’re looking to be more modest for any reason at all. The quality is top-notch too, with the white stripes never becoming see-through when wet. — Rachel Lubitz, senior lifestyle editor

These were definitely my favorite pair of trunks, featuring a stylish 7-inch inseam. They’ve got three pockets (two on the side, one on the back) and have a fine mesh lining, which made them feel much more comfortable than the other two swimsuits I tried. — Kai Burkhardt, associate editor

I’ve seen this suit all over my Instagram and I know why. At just $33, this suit is a steal. It looks similar in design to bathing suits that cost over $100. It fits true to size and was comfortable. The back has as much coverage as the front of the suit, so you can feel secure and comfortable all day. This is a plus for larger-chested people! I ordered the orange/white version, and luckily the white top wasn’t see-through at all even when it got wet. Two of my friends already ordered this suit after spending a day with me wearing it! — Rosanne Salvatore, former deputy editor

A one-piece that’s deceptively sexy? Count us in. With multi-band accents across the shoulders and waist, with mesh running between each of the bands, this was one of the most comfortable swimsuits I tried. It also ran a bit big, so be sure to make sure you’re sizing one size down on this one. Overall it made me feel like a Bond girl, which is something I never thought a $20 swimsuit could do. The only problem I ran into was being a little afraid that it was going to leave weird-looking tan/sunburn lines all around my body, but luckily I always wore enough sunscreen so that wasn’t a problem. — Rachel Lubitz, lifestyle editor

There’s something so simplistic about a bandeau bikini. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option you can get shipped to you quickly, I’d definitely recommend this one. The top feels supportive, a necessity for a strapless bikini, and the bottoms are high-waisted and aren’t super cheeky — although they do sit below the belly button. My one con is that I ordered the navy blue color, which is more of a deep teal shade in person, but I’d still reach for this on my next pool day. — Kiana Murden, former associate lifestyle editor

These trunks come in more than 40 colors, some less attractive than others. I went over the top with the Fiji Coral design, but besides their bold look, this swimsuit is a solid choice for your next trip to the beach. Featuring two large pockets, a cargo pocket on the right leg and an additional tiny internal pocket (really only big enough for one key), there are plenty of options to keep your essentials while you go from the car to the water. The fit was perfect around the waist, but the legs are a little long for my taste with an 11-inch inseam. The internal mesh lining also felt a little tighter than I would’ve liked, but it definitely wasn’t a deal breaker. — Kai Burkhardt, associate editor

Speaking of Bond girl, this one gives you that bombshell feel too. Its bustline was a little lower than expected on me, so I had some cleavage showing, but once I properly adjusted the bands I was much more comfortable. The bottoms were pleasantly not-too-high-cut too, so I didn’t feel too va-va-voom for the neighborhood pool. Overall it gave me a lovely shape and was so incredibly comfortable to wear for a few hours, plus the sweet tropical print was a nice touch. The quality stood up after washing as well! — Rachel Lubitz, senior lifestyle editor

This suit is honestly exactly as advertised. It’s definitely a more risqué cut for a swimsuit in that it’s backless, shows sideboob and is high-cut on your legs. It runs true to size and the large fit me well, was comfortable and even had enough coverage for larger boobs. The suit held up in the wash. If you’re looking for a modern yet classic one-piece suit, this is the one for you. — Rosanne Salvatore, former deputy editor

I’d definitely say this suit was exactly what I expected, especially for only $25. I love the army green color, and the suit feels pretty secure, which is huge. The bottoms are pretty high-waisted, so it gives a great amount of coverage if you’re looking for a bikini that doesn’t show too much. — Kiana Murden, former associate lifestyle editor

A little bit shorter than the Kanu trunks, these 9-inch shorts from Amazon Essentials were also super stylish and fit great. This pair also comes with two side pockets, a tiny key pocket and a back pocket. The texture of the suit itself feels a bit more matte than the traditional swimsuit material, making them seem a bit more like board shorts. — Kai Burkhardt, associate editor

This is one of those suits where if your body isn’t the same size on both top and bottom you could run into some issues. Though the bottoms fit perfectly on me, the medium-sized top didn’t fit my chest that well and left me spilling out more than I like. However, if you aren’t particularly busty I’m sure it’d be fine actually, given that the halter is completely adjustable and there are two straps in the back, one of which you tie yourself, which makes it feel extra secure. It’s actually a shame this one didn’t fit me, since the quality itself seemed great, and it held up perfectly after a few washings and a spin in the pool. — Rachel Lubitz, senior lifestyle editor

  • Editors’ picks: The best sandals under $100 that we actually wear and love | CNN Underscored

Editors’ picks: The best sandals under $100 that we actually wear and love | CNN Underscored

This article is part of Spring Fashion Month, where we’re breaking down your must-have fashion pieces for the next few months. From denim jackets to comfy sandals, we’re asking editors, influencers and experts about the go-to pieces they wear through spring and beyond.

Spring is synonymous with the ritual of tucking away those clunky boots and slipping back on those much cooler, cuter sandals. The problem with sandals though? They can be seriously painful for a while. That’s where we come in. With years of experience with blisters and bleeding come sandal season, our editors have found the comfiest, most versatile sandals under $100 on the market. See below for all our picks.

After getting into kayaking last summer, I absolutely adore my Tevas. I got the basic sandals, which don’t offer a ton of support but they’re super light and packable, comfortable and most importantly, actually stay on my feet when I’m swimming or wading through the mud to get to shore. — Kai Burkhardt, associate editor

I’ve never found a more comfortable sandal. These are made from real yoga mats so they’re extremely squishy and comfortable. The fabric straps don’t give me blisters and I can wear them for hours. They also last for years! I’ve had the same pair for over a decade and they’re still as comfortable as the first time I wore them. — Lindsey Smith, associate editor

I’ve had the same pair of Chacos for nine years. They’ve taken me on hikes, beach walks, city strolls and more, across the world. They’re sturdy, comfortable, waterproof and easy to clean. During the summertime, they’re my go-to activity sandal. The straps can take some time to adjust to your perfect fit, but once they do, your feet will be supported and ready for any terrain. Plus, they come in lots of colors and you’re likely to find a great deal! — Sophie Shaw, associate beauty editor

It may not be original, but I do love my Birks. And these Arizona Essentials made from waterproof EVA are both super comfortable and, well, purple. I can wear them to the beach, then pair them with a sundress for poolside cocktails. And, being a New Yorker, I can walk my many blocks with nary a blister. And though Birkenstocks can be pricey, especially now that there is a line to get into the Soho store every weekend, I was thrilled that they cost less than $50. — Tobey Grumet, reviews editor

I’ve been a Teva convert for the past six or so years and I don’t see that allegiance ending anytime soon. The Teva Original Universal Sandals have been a staple in my closet, helping me dress for a variety of occasions. Whether I’m on the beach, hiking with friends or dressing them up with a jumpsuit, these sandals have added comfort and color to my spring and summer wardrobes. With plenty of wear and tear on my current ones, these sandals are the durable and dependable footwear I go to when I’m looking for an efficient sandal that won’t hurt my feet. Plus, they’re lightweight and small enough to fit in my carry-on bags for quick trips or when I’m on the go. With plenty of color options and patterns available, I never get tired of their designs (and prices). — Madison Yerke, social strategist

My ride-or-die sandal, all year round. I can dress them up or down, depending on the occasion, and they’re surprisingly comfortable despite being a strappy sandal. I don’t think this shoe will ever go out of style. — Hayley Kinne, business development manager

These Teva x Cotopaxi sandals are everything and more. They somehow feel completely weightless on my feet, and I’ve taken them on several trips that were quite walking-heavy with no issues at all. Because of their adjustable strap and light foamy footbed, I refuse to wait for summer to wear them, so they’re my “slippers” indoors with socks when I’m working or walking around the house. Plus, their bright colorblock brings me so much joy. While this specific colorway is discontinued, they have plenty of other stunning models available. — Marissa Miller, contributing editor

I will say it up front: These slides are not cute. They are, however, the most comfortable sandals you will ever put on your feet. Oofos specially makes shoes for post-workout recovery — its proprietary OOfoam technology absorbs 37% more impact than traditional foam footwear. But they’re so delightfully supportive and squishy, that I throw them on even on days where I skipped the gym. After a few wears, looks suddenly don’t seem to matter much at all… — Chelsea Stone, senior editor

These Y2K-inspired Steve Madden sandals are a no-brainer if you’re looking for a quick and versatile option for the warmer months. They can be dressed up or down with equal ease, and they’re my go-to when I’m not sure how fancy or casual my destination is. The neutral color goes with basically everything, which is a definite perk when I don’t feel like thinking too hard about my outfit but still want to look put together. As for comfort, the stretchy fabric band on top hugs my foot snugly enough so that I don’t have to worry about them slipping off. The 2-inch platform is a nice bonus — that and the textured band on top elevates this pair beyond being a too-simple pair of slides (and of course, I’ll take any extra height where I can get it). — Morgan Pryor, Underscored intern

Despite what their name would lead you to believe, these Nike slides do not slide off your feet — believe me, I’ve tried. They’re made a bit narrow, which gives them that extra source of support that’s especially useful when wet. They have a contoured grippy footbed reminiscent of that of a running shoe so I can wear them for hours without any pain. I have a pretty high instep, but because the strap is lined with cushioning, I never get blisters at the tops of my feet despite extended wear. — Marissa Miller, contributing editor

These are by far my most worn sandal! They’re equal parts comfortable and chic, plus can be dressed up or down depending on my outfit. Living in the city, I walk everywhere — especially once the weather gets warm. I found these held up really well after a summer of frequent wear. For under $20, I may have to pick up a few more colors! — Julia Leinhauser, associate manager of affiliate partnerships

Let me add to the chorus of Teva love in here: They are fantastic. I could never find sandals that can withstand the beach, traveling through airports, walking miles through the streets of New York and everything in between … until I met these beautiful and colorful magical shoes. The midform is a bit higher than other Teva soles out there but not precariously so, and give just the right enough of height so I don’t feel like my toes are dangerously close to dirty sidewalks or subway platforms. I’ve had them for well over a year now, and they still look and feel just like they did out of the box. Plus I just love the metallic lilac, orange and light brown that serves as a perfect contrast to an all-black outfit or coordinates with whatever I’m wearing too. — Rachel Lubitz, senior lifestyle editor

Some things never change — the iconic navy and white striped Adidas slide is one of those things. This is actually my second pair (the first was a hand-me-down from my cousin that was about two sizes too big), but now that they fit me, it’s clear that these no-fuss slip-ons are classic for a reason. — Chelsea Stone, senior editor

These flip flops are a smart, minimalist option for a beach vacation, since they pack down flat and go with any outfit. They’re available in a ton of neutrals, whether you’re looking to match your summer tan or go for a nice complementary shade. — Caroline Curran, associate editor

25 of our favorite spring fashion finds under $100 at Nordstrom right now | CNN Underscored

This article is part of Spring Fashion Month, where we’re breaking down your must-have fashion pieces for the next few months. From denim jackets to comfy sandals, we’re asking editors, influencers and experts about the go-to pieces they wear through spring and beyond.

Spring has officially sprung, meaning there’s no better time than now to get a jump start on your wardrobe. As the season gears up, we’ll be trading in our heavy coats, chunky sweaters and boots for flouncy dresses, lightweight blazers and sandals. But revamping your closet doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Luckily, if you’re in the market for spring’s biggest trends at budget-friendly prices, Nordstrom has you covered.

With thousands of incredible items to choose from, finding the season’s must-have items can be time consuming, so we caught up with Kate Bellman, Nordstrom’s managing fashion editor, who gave us some advice on what trends and styles to look for.

According to Bellman, this season’s biggest trends include freshened-up tailoring with silhouettes that “ease towards relaxed shapes” including full-length trousers, soft blazers and statement shirting. Romantic dresses and details including “pretty lace, chiffon and pleats” and “floral prints in pretty palettes” are another top trend. “Crochet, fringe and embroidery in captivating colors” give way to a new “crafty chic” style, too. Lastly, “cutout tops, shirred dresses, strappy sandals, plunging necklines and mini hemlines” are some of spring’s sexiest trends, Bellman says.

With all this in mind, we picked out more of the trendiest $100 and under clothing, shoes, handbags and accessories that we could find from Nordstrom that are sure to take you through the season in major style without breaking the bank.

These Free People overalls are a great piece for transitioning between seasons. While the light wash denim is classic for spring, the full body fit makes it a great layering piece if you’re still dressing to fight off some winter cold fronts.

  • We tried the $30 Amazon nightgown dress reviewers love — and this is what we thought | CNN Underscored

We tried the $30 Amazon nightgown dress reviewers love — and this is what we thought | CNN Underscored

Amazon always has our attention when it comes to snagging good deals. For the chillier months, we — and over 25,000 reviewers — loved this Amazon coat. But for spring, you’re looking for that easy-breezy dress that’s comfy enough to wear nonstop as a casual house dress but so stylish that you’ll want everyone to see it. And Amazon has a solution for that too: Everyone, meet the Amazon nightgown dress.

Part “Little House on the Prairie,” part millennial partying all summer long in Montauk, the nightgown dress gives off major bohemian vibes and is reminiscent of Poupette St. Barth’s and Spell & the Gypsy Collective-style dresses … but at a fraction of the price.

OK, OK, it’s not really a nightgown, but thanks to its breezy, flowy cut, the powers that be (aka influencers) are calling it just that. You know something is trending when it has its own hashtag, and this dress got one early on: #AmazonNightgown.

Are you ready to hear how much this majorly in-demand dress costs? Just 30 bucks! Which is part of the reason why it’s blowing up on the ’gram and beyond. We can’t not afford to give it a try. And it’s on Prime with free returns, making it a no-brainer.

Another thought on why it’s gaining steam: the aforementioned loosey-goosey cut. In the age of skintight jeans and crop tops, sometimes a girl just wants to put on a muumuu — albeit one in a pretty pattern with chic details — to run some errands. Think about all those super-flowy nap dresses that everyone seems to have. No back fat bulge showing, no pants pinching — just soft, pretty cotton creating an airy silhouette. What doesn’t sound great about that? Check out how @ChrissyMWard styled it below. Pairing it with a sleek ponytail and woven bag, the fashion blogger told her 26,000 followers, “Best $28 I’ve ever spent.”

So, I put the Amazon nightgown dress to the test. Because certainly this was an Instagram versus Reality scenario, right? Available in a whopping 15 colorways, I chose the pink pattern in a size small — lots of reviewers said to size up because the chest ran tight, but given the voluminous skirt, I played it safe and stuck with my normal size, which I was glad about because it fits perfectly.

underscored R.Vivimos Women's Long-Sleeve Floral Print Retro V-Neck Tassel Bohemian Midi Dress

Our takeaway: The vividly colored material is actually a rayon/cotton blend (not solely cotton), which makes it super lightweight and almost silky against the skin. My fear that the fabric would overwhelm my 5-foot-4 stature was put at bay as soon as I put it on. While it’s certainly loose, the dress is definitely not huge. The midi length is my favorite detail, as it hits a flattering point between my knees and ankles, but the trickiest thing is going to be finding a bra or undergarment that can work with the plunging neckline!

If you fear that the dress’ shapeless cut will be more potato sack and less sexy fairy princess, I get it. But its cut is much narrower in real life than it appears online, and with the help of accessories (layered necklaces, bracelets, sunglasses and pretty sandals!), the dress — that others are paying more than $300 for from high-end designers — easily transitions from drab to fab, letting you live out your cottagecore fashion fantasies. Or you can pair it with flip-flops and a ponytail and head to your farmers market looking effortlessly chic.

That’s right, the Amazon nightgown dress is the perfect early fall transition dress that you don’t want to miss out on, nor should you because — reminder — it’s only $31!

  • Lululemon Align vs. a $23 Amazon lookalike: We put these cult-favorite leggings to the test | CNN Underscored

Lululemon's Align leggings (left) and Colorfulkoala Buttery Soft leggings (right)

The cutest denim jackets under $100, according to influencers | CNN Underscored

There are few spring staples that have as much perennial wear-potential as a good denim jacket. Similar to your go-to moto leather jacket or a great trench, a denim jacket can be one of the most useful and stylish layers to reach for as soon as the weather turns from winter to spring.

No matter if you’re looking for a traditional non-stretch cotton denim jacket, a cropped style that gives your high-waist pants a moment to shine or a vest with a little more layering potential, the best denim jackets aren’t hard to find. Even more, you don’t have to opt for traditional blue denim. “A black denim jacket is a wardrobe must,” says NYC-based stylist Desiree Miranda. “You can get that effortless ‘off-duty cool-girl’ look by pairing it with black jeans or leather pants and a white or striped shirt underneath.”

Luckily, you don’t have to drop a ton of cash on the traditional staple to find one that’s stylish and warm. We turned to the experts — editors, stylists and influencers that try on hundreds of new items a month — to find the best denim jackets under $100 for spring. Ahead, 20 of the best ones to shop.

“I absolutely love the wash of this jacket,” says influencer Raeann Langas, who recently moved from LA to NYC. “I would wear it as a top paired with dark-wash denim with a long coat layered over top.”

“I’m really particular with my denim jackets — the shape is so important!” says Indya Brown, a stylist and editor. “I tend to go for shorter or cropped lengths since most of my pants are high-waist, so the proportions look really intentional and fun.”

“The Levi’s Premium ‘90s Trucker Jacket is a timeless and comfortable shape, which means both dressy and casual ensembles become imbued with effortless coolness,” says influencer Mandy Madden Kelley, who also owns jewelry brand Pagerie. “What makes it so special is its versatility — it looks equally great styled over a floaty dress, or paired with skinny jeans and sneakers for a streetwear look. Indeed, the jacket only improves with wear, showing age in the form of fading, torn threads and unique fades that no two pieces have in common. The combination of the classic design, durable material and the fact that it goes with almost anything makes this an essential addition to any wardrobe.”

“I always find inspiration from that classic California 1970s aesthetic,” says recent LA-to-NYC transplant Kathryn Zahorak. “I blame it on growing up in the Golden State. I love a bit masculine oversized fit for a jacket. Stiff dark wash denim. Love pairing with vintage Levi’s or bold maxi dress.”

“This one from Topshop’s collection at Nordstrom is a perfect staple and the slightly cropped look is sure to be a flattering style on all body types,” says Miranda.

Surely you’ve seen the denim vest’s comeback on your feed recently — and this pick from influencer and entrepreneur Alyssa Coscarelli is also a favorite of my own. Layer it atop a tee for a casual vibe, or on its own for a night out.

“The Short Denim Jacket from Cider is my new obsession,” says Muntea Carmina, an influencer in Romania who goes by @carminamnt. “An essential addition to your wardrobe. I love the unique design that you don’t see everyday,” says Carmina, who would pair this jacket with “a denim crop top, black cargo pants and Dr. Martens boots.”

Influencer Pauline Leclercq, who goes by the handle @honeypopi, says she loves “a classic, oversized and dark=colored denim jacket to change from the classic denim jacket. I see this one with a long skirt and a pair of gazelles or samba, and a classic white shirt.”

Nail the ’00s revival that’s all over Instagram and TikTok with this denim shrug.

“One of my favorite denim jackets is the Opal Swing Denim Jacket from Free People,” says North Carolina-based influencer Kooba Pardo. “I love how timeless and chic this jacket is. It also has a beautiful distressed denim wash that can be worn year-round. It’s the perfect oversized fit but doesn’t look baggy. In addition, it’s versatile and can be dressed up or down. It’s a great piece if you’re trying to build a capsule wardrobe at an affordable price.”

“This oversized dark denim blue jacket from H&M is such an easy piece to use for transitional weather going from fall to winter and spring to summer,” says Miranda. “Oversized denim jackets are great for when you want to add another piece, and not be to “over done,” use over athleisure for a fun day look.”

This zip-up denim jacket is made from thick-spun denim, lending it the telltale vintage look that you’ve seen all over your feed.

“I also love an oversized silhouette like this denim jacket from Topshop,” says Brown. “It’s dark denim with a balloon shape and altogether looks super expensive.”

“I love Everlane denim because it’s reliable and affordable,” says Abby Price, founder of Shop Abbode. “I wear this light wash style constantly,”

LA-based Influencer and model Loren Thompson loves this white-wash denim jacket from Revolve because it’s perfect for transitional weather.

“I generally prefer a bomber style but I love the way this dark wash jacket goes with everything,” says Coscarelli.

A favorite of influencers from LA to NYC, Azalea Wang makes separates and accessories that feel like one-of-a-kind pieces for the every day. This cropped jacket is no exception.

Leclercq also recommends “a denim crop jacket to go with all your looks—especially over a long dress on summer nights.”

“Cropped denim jackets are so versatile, this is what you can use over your summer dresses or skirt outfits in the spring,” says Miranda. “Additionally, it’s so easy to throw on a over casual look. This one from Abercrombie is a great option, being primarily cotton and with a little elastane to be extra comfortable.”

One of Amazon’s top-rated denim jackets is also an influencer favorite: This sherpa-lined denim style from Levi’s.

Skims’ Swim is back with new colors, coverups and accessories | CNN Underscored

While Kim Kardashian’s alien-centric ads for Skims Swim generated lots of headlines — some hilariously blaming the mogul for the recent influx of UFO sightings across the country — the objective of the Harmony Korine-shot campaign was to announce the brand’s latest swimwear restock and drop. “I know you guys have been waiting… @SKIMS Swim is finally coming back! Get ready for our biggest launch ever with all-new out of this world styles and colors you have to see to believe, plus the return of sold-out favorites on February 21,” she originally captioned an Instagram post.

Yes, all Skims launches are surrounded by a fan frenzy, but Swim seems to hit differently — last year’s drop brought in more than 500,000 visits to skims.com on launch day and more than 1 million views on Skims’ Swim page in the month of March, and the collection received more than 1,200 5-star reviews, plus 500,000 all-time waitlist sign-ups.

Point being: Skims Swim is a favorite, and as of Feb. 21 at 12 p.m. ET, there’s a whole lot more of it to shop. The latest restock includes 25 styles (11 tops, eight bottoms, five one-pieces) in seven colorways, including neon green, turquoise, ochre, almond, gunmetal, cocoa and onyx, and in sizes ranging from XXS to 4X. Fear not: The cult-favorite Dipped Tie Bottoms and Plunge Bikini Top are back, alongside new designs like the Swim Long-Sleeve Bikini Top and the Skims Strapless Monokini.

Beyond the swimwear, Skims is debuting its cover-ups collection of seven stretchy and/or mesh styles — think miniskirts, sarongs, ruched minidresses and more — all of which come in the same color palette as the suits, allowing for lots of mixing and matching. The brand is also releasing hair accessories for the first time, including a claw clip with a bedazzled Skims logo, meaning everyone can be wearing the brand from head to toe (yes, Skims sandals are also available!).

How much is this latest collection going to set you back? Like most Skims pieces, the assortment is (relatively) reasonably priced, running from $24 to $88 per item.
