Powered by a monstrous second quarter and 31 points from Desmond Bane, the Orlando Magic handed the visiting Indiana Pacers a record-tying 12th straight loss with a 135-127 win on Sunday afternoon.

Indiana matched three previous 12-game losing streaks in franchise annals – the last one during the 1988-89 season. The Pacers can break the dubious record on Tuesday when they host the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Paolo Banchero scored 28 points and Anthony Black added 27 for the Magic, who have alternated wins and losses in their last 10 games. Orlando hit 26 of 34 free-throw attempts while Indiana converted 16 of 21.

Pascal Siakam posted a game-high 34 points for the Pacers and Aaron Nesmith had 25.

Orlando trailed 41-29 one minute into the second quarter before all the momentum turned the Magic’s way. Bane kickstarted a 17-0 Orlando run with an elbow jumper and two free throws. Tyus Jones hit a 3-pointer to put the Magic ahead 43-41 and Bane closed the run with a 34-foot 3-pointer.

Orlando, which outscored Indiana 41-22 in the second, pushed the lead to as much as 13 and led 69-58 at halftime.

Indiana made its first nine shots in the second half — most of them layups — and pulled within 95-92 on Siakam’s 3-pointer with 3:59 left in the third. Siakam scored 20 points in the quarter, but Orlando got a late 3-point play from Bane and led 107-100 after three.

The Pacers reclaimed a brief 116-115 lead on a pair of Nembhard free throws with 7:29 left, but Orlando answered with a 9-0 run that included threes by Banchero and Black.

Indiana closed to 130-127, but Tristan Da Silva hit a three from the wing with 1:10 left to seal it. Indiana missed 3-point tries on its last three possessions.

The first quarter was all Pacers. Indiana got good production from Nesmith, who had a pair of threes in the first four minutes, to take a 13-5 lead.

Jay Huff flung a reverse layup with both hands with 1.5 seconds left in the first quarter and got a lucky bounce as Indiana led 36-28 after one.

Indiana coach Rick Carlisle remains at 999 NBA victories in his career. The Pacers used their 20th different starting lineup Sunday, the most of any NBA team.

Jaylen Brown had 33 points, 10 rebounds and five assists to help the host Boston Celtics end the Detroit Pistons’ 13-game winning streak with a 117-114 victory on Wednesday in an NBA Cup game.

After Anfernee Simons extended Boston’s lead to 115-112 by making two free throws with 6.3 seconds on the clock, Cade Cunningham was fouled attempting a 3-pointer with 4.4 seconds remaining, but he missed the third free-throw attempt after he made the first two.

Boston’s Payton Pritchard made two free throws with 2.4 seconds left and then the Celtics came up with a steal on Detroit’s final possession.

Detroit would have set a franchise record by winning its 14th straight game.

The Pistons also won 13 straight games in 1989-1990 and 2003-04. Detroit won the NBA title both seasons.

Derrick White added 27 points and seven rebounds for Boston. Pritchard made four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points.

Cunningham scored a game-high 42 points and collected eight rebounds and five assists. He made 14 of 16 foul shots in the loss.

Jalen Duren added 12 points and 16 rebounds for Detroit, which also received a 12-point performance from Tobias Harris.

The loss dropped Detroit’s road record to 7-2.

The Celtics played without center Neemias Queta, who exited Sunday’s game against Orlando in the first quarter with a left ankle sprain and did not return. Queta is averaging career-highs in points per game (9.3) and rebounds per game (7.9) this season.

The Pistons led 30-24 after one quarter and 58-57 at halftime, but Boston had an 86-83 lead entering the final quarter.

It was the second time Boston and Detroit have played this season. The Pistons defeated the Celtics 119-113 in Detroit on Oct. 26. Brown scored a game-high 41 points in the loss. Cunningham led the Pistons with 25.

Detroit is 2-1 in East Group B. Boston is 2-2.

  • NBA roundup: Tyrese Maxey nets career-best 54 in 76ers’ OT win

Justin Edwards’ only 3-pointer of the game opened the scoring in overtime and gave Philadelphia a lead it never relinquished and Tyrese Maxey scored a career-best 54 points as the 76ers pulled away for a 123-114 victory over the host Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday night.

In a game without injured stars Joel Embiid and Giannis Antetokounmpo, Edwards played hero in hitting his seventh 3-point shot of the game just 40 seconds into overtime. His offensive rebound on a missed foul shot with less than a minute to play led to two lead-extending free throws by Quentin Grimes.

Maxey hit four overtime free throws — all in the final 22.7 seconds — to complement key late contributions by Edwards and Grimes, who nailed a 3-pointer with the 76ers up just one with 1:23 to play.

Playing in just his second game of the season, Paul George chipped in with 21 points in 25 minutes for the 76ers, who improved to 2-0 in overtime games this season.

Ryan Rollins amassed a team-high 32 points and a game-high 14 assists and six rebounds for the Bucks, who lost their third straight. Turner also had a double-double with 14 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

    Grizzlies 137, Kings 96

Santi Aldama tied his career high with 29 points and Jock Landale added 21 as Memphis snapped a five-game losing streak with a victory over visiting Sacramento.

The Grizzlies set a franchise record with 42 assists while handing Sacramento its eighth straight loss. Aldama was 11-of-18 shooting with five 3-pointers, while Landale made eight of his nine field-goal attempts. Rookie Cedric Coward finished with 19 points and big man Zach Edey scored 16 points — all in the opening half — on 7-of-7 shooting. Vince Williams Jr., filling in at point guard for the Grizzlies, had a career-high 15 assists.

Sacramento was led by Zach LaVine, who scored 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting. Maxime Raynaud added 12 points and Keegan Murray, making his season debut after returning from preseason thumb surgery, finished with 11 points. Russell Westbrook also scored 11 for the Kings.

    Magic 129, Clippers 101

Jalen Suggs knocked down five 3-pointers on his way to a team-high 23 points, and Orlando continued the tailspin of visiting Los Angeles.

Orlando overwhelmed Los Angeles defensively, holding the Clippers to just 36-of-89 (40.4%) shooting from the floor while forcing 21 turnovers. The Magic rode their defensive dominance to their fifth win in the last six games. Franz Wagner complemented Suggs with 20 points, Tristan da Silva added 17 points and eight rebounds, and Desmond Bane converted 3-of-6 from 3-point range on the way to 15 points.

The Clippers mounted little offensive threats outside of James Harden, who led all scorers with 31. The only other Clipper to score in double figures was Ivica Zubac with 14 points. Zubac also grabbed a game-high 19 rebounds.

    Spurs 135, Hawks 126

De’Aaron Fox hit for 26 points and Keldon Johnson added a season-high 25 off the bench as host San Antonio beat Atlanta for its third straight win.

The Spurs led by as many as 19 points in the second quarter but entered the final period up just three. Atlanta briefly took the lead on a layup by Nickeil Alexander-Walker with 9:17 to play but San Antonio swung back, forging a 10-0 run capped by Jeremy Sochan’s dunk to make it 110-101.

Alexander-Walker poured in a career-high 38 points for the Hawks, who lost their second consecutive game after winning five in a row. Jalen Johnson added 26 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Riley Kugel and Themus Fulks each scored 18 points, Jamichael Stillwell had 12 points and 11 rebounds and UCF extended its winning streak to four with a 77-67 victory over Pitt on Thursday night in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Fulks made three 3-pointers and dished out four assists as UCF (5-1) successfully debuted at the annual Legends Classic and earned the program’s first-ever win against Pitt (4-2). The Knights also won for the fourth time in five visits to the Ocean Center — located fewer than 60 miles from the Knights’ campus in Orlando — dating back to 1997.

Jordan Burks, a transfer from Georgetown, chipped in nine points and four rebounds for UCF.

UCF entered as one of the nation’s top teams in three-point shooting percentage (47.7), but the Knights finished just 6 of 18 from behind the arc. The Knights benefited from 24 second-chance points and a 46-28 scoring edge in the paint.

Pitt made 18 of 21 free throws but converted only 7 of 27 3-pointers.

Cameron Corhen posted a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Panthers and Barry Dunning Jr. had 14 points off the bench, making all six of his free throws. Damarco Minor contributed 14 points, punctuated by a late flurry of 3-pointers that helped keep the Panthers close. He added four rebounds and four assists.

UCF opened the second half on a 15-3 run for a 53-39 lead with 13:22 remaining. Stillwell had back-to-back baskets, 7-foot-2 center John Bol added an offensive putback and a lane jumper and Carmelo Pacheco sank a 3-pointer to highlight the decisive stretch.

Kugel was whistled for his fourth foul with just more than 11 minutes left and UCF ahead 55-44. Pitt’s Brandin Cummings, who entered averaging 13.8 points per game, completed a three-point play to get on the scoresheet, but UCF countered with a quick 7-0 run to make it 62-47.

Fulks made an open three as time ran down in the first half, lifting UCF to a 38-36 advantage at intermission. The opening 20 minutes featured eight lead changes and four ties as Pitt established a rhythm inside with Corhen, who had 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting.

Alyssa Thomas had 23 points and 10 assists, Satou Sabally scored 21 points and the host Phoenix Mercury advanced to the WNBA Finals with an 86-81 comeback victory over the game but crippled Minnesota Lynx in Game 4 of their semifinal series Sunday night.

DeWanna Bonner had 11 of her 13 points and all three of her 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, when the Mercury outscored the Lynx 31-13 to overcome a 68-55 deficit and advance to the finals for the first time since falling to the Chicago Sky in 2021.

The Lynx played without star center Napheesa Collier, who suffered a left ankle injury in the final seconds of the Mercury’s 84-76 victory in Game 3 on Friday and watched the game from the bench in a walking boot.

Minnesota’s Kayla McBride had 14 of her playoff career-high 31 points when the Lynx took the upper hand in the third quarter but could not hold on. Courtney Williams had 20 points and Jessica Shepard had career playoff-high 14 points while starting for Collier.

The finals are to begin Friday, with the first two games at the site of the higher seed. The fourth-seeded Mercury knocked off the top-seeded Lynx in their best-of-five series. The second-seeded Las Vegas Aces and the sixth-seeded Indiana Fever meet in Game 5 of their series Tuesday.

The WNBA Finals will be a best-of-seven for the first time in league history. Phoenix last won a championship in 2014.

The Mercury scored 19 of the first 21 points in the fourth period, and the second of Bonner’s two 3-pointers gave them a 72-70 lead with 3:39 remaining.

McBride and Bonner traded 3-pointers as the Mercury stayed ahead 77-73. McBride’s sixth three made it 77-76 with 1:04 remaining but Bonner followed with two free throws for a 79-76 lead with 42 seconds left.

After a McBride miss, Thomas made a driving layup for an 81-76 lead with 27 seconds left. The Lynx later got within three on Natasha Hiedeman’s 3-pointer with 5.2 seconds remaining before Kahleah Copper closed the scoring with two free throws.

Associate head coach Eric Thibault coached the Lynx while head coach Cheryl Reeve served a one-game suspension for her conduct and comments toward the officials during and after Game 3.

Thomas was two rebounds short of her second playoff triple-double.

The Mercury had outscored 21-9 in the fourth quarter of the Game 3.

The Mercury trailed by 14 in the first quarter, drew even at 38 at halftime and did not lead until Copper’s 3-pointer on their first possession of the second half.

The Lynx put together another spurt including two threes from McBride for 55-45 lead midway through the third.

Sabally had 24, 23 and 21 points in the final three games of the series, all Mercury wins.
