    It’s the new year, so goal-setting and resolutions are on my mind. One goal that I think we should all set is to prioritize self-care, and after chatting with Emma Heming Willis and Helen Christoni, the co-founders of Make Time Wellness, I’m more inspired than ever to do just that.

    For Heming Willis, it all started when she began experiencing brain fog after becoming a mom. She sought help from a doctor, made the recommended lifestyle changes to optimize her brain health, and even started a complicated supplement regimen—which she quickly realized wasn’t sustainable. “I couldn’t find an all-in-one solution for women that would take care of their brain, body, and beauty. Everything was a pill or too complicated,” she says. “I said to my co-founder, Helen, that I wished I could take all these supplements and turn them into a drink, and that’s how Make Time Wellness was born.”

She found herself enthralled by the beauty world, captivated by art, and interested in medicine—but above all, she had a desire to help people. She realized that all of these passions coalesced in the field of plastic surgery.

    Devgan’s philosophy is “Beauty is in the details,” which represents the millimeter-level precision that a career in plastic surgery requires. She says it also serves as a reminder that beauty is a diverse, nuanced, and deeply personal concept. “By paying attention to the details, I can help individuals achieve their unique vision of beauty,” she says.

    I believe that your life shows you a preview of your true calling at a young age. For me, I always loved writing and reading beauty and fashion magazines—and look where I am now! Toni Ko, the founder of Nyx Professional Makeup and Bespoke Beauty Brands, had a similar experience. Ever since she was young, she loved makeup and would watch in admiration as her mom applied her lipstick in the morning. From the age of 14, Ko worked at her family’s beauty supply store, where she learned the behind-the-scenes of the industry and what it takes to run a company.

    Ko told me that Nyx Professional Makeup—now a $500 million brand—was born out of her experience as a consumer. “I remember going to the department stores and swooning over the high-end beauty brands, but they were too expensive for me to buy,” she said. She wanted to re-create the high-end packaging and high quality of department store cosmetics but make them affordable, so she founded Nyx Professional Makeup at just 25 years old. “The only way to succeed is to focus on finding a solution, rather than focusing on the problem,” she says, reflecting on her entrepreneurial journey. She also notes that out-of-the-box creativity, trend forecasting, and having a strong narrative are the most important factors in creating a successful brand.

    There’s nothing like the feeling of getting your hair freshly highlighted, cut, and blow-dried to smooth, silky perfection. It’s a major confidence booster and makes me feel on top of the world. After my most recent appointment at Rita Hazan’s Upper East Side salon, I strutted out onto the street truly feeling like a supermodel. I mean, it’s kind of hard not to feel this way when my hair had just been done by the same woman who does Beyoncé’s hair. 

    Rita Hazan discovered her passion for hair at a young age and decided to make a career out of it. At 17, she enrolled in beauty school, and after mastering styling, she realized she was most passionate about color. Her goal was to work for Oribe after graduating, and to no one’s surprise, she landed the gig and worked under the brand’s master colorist for more than five years. This is where she learned to color natural and textured hair types. “No one could get these hair types light without it turning brassy. That became my specialty,” she says. This helped Hazan build her celeb clientele early on. Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez were a couple of the first, and now, she has added Beyoncé, Sydney Sweeney, and Jessica Simpson, among others, to her roster.

    Kristin Cavallari was never far removed from the beauty and wellness scene.     Wellness encapsulates many topics in one single word.     Alex Taylor, the co-founder of clean-supplement brand Perelel, had a similar experience to me. She developed an autoimmune disease because of the extreme pressure she was under professionally. “My naturopathic doctor, my internist, and my endocrinologist encouraged me to make some lifestyle changes, especially if I ever wanted to get pregnant one day,” she says. In 2018, Taylor and her future co-founder Victoria Thain Gioia were both pregnant and less than satisfied with their prenatal vitamins. They were surprised that they couldn’t find a natural, sustainable prenatal that had the all nutrients they needed without the unnecessary additives and excessive packaging.

    The first thing I noticed (and immediately appreciated) about master injector and skin specialist Anush Movsesian was her blunt honesty.     As someone who has seen Movsesian twice now—once for Botox and once for lip filler—I can say she’s truly one of the best practioners I’ve met, and in addition to being a self-proclaimed “perfectionist” when it comes to results (she went above and beyond during my filler appointment, recommending we dissolve some previous filler so I’d have better, more symmetrical results), she’s also a self-proclaimed product junkie, especially when it comes to skincare. 

    “It’s called a skincare routine for a reason—you have to remain consistent in order to see the results you want and keep your skin healthy,” Movsesian tells me. “I have always prioritized this as time for myself in the morning and evening, and I genuinely look forward to it. We can always find a million excuses to skip something, but being regimented and choosing to enjoy the process is key. Being a little selfish and putting time aside for yourself is necessary and important!”

    Finding the right skincare for you can be a process and a journey. When the stars finally align and you do discover your holy grail products, you never want to let them go. That’s what celebrity esthetician Renée Rouleau’s products did for me. As someone who struggled with dehydration, barrier damage, and acne simultaneously, I thought I would never find a routine that worked well for me and didn’t dry me out. One day, on a whim when I was writing, I discovered Rouleau’s Rapid Response Detox Cleanser ($43), and never looked back. It’s one of the few great cleansers that works well for acne-prone skin without harsh exfoliants or drying out your skin.

    After that, I proceeded to try a handful of other products from Rouleau’s line and now they’re each nonnegotiable items in my skincare routine. This is a testament to the thought and care Rouleau bestows upon her formulas—nothing goes unthought of. In fact, I’ve learned so many great skincare tips from her at this point that if she told me wearing a trash bag for an entire day would transform my skin, I’d 100% believe her. I’m embellishing a bit here for dramatic effect, but seriously, if you follow Rouleau’s advice, you will see amazing results. One of the biggest myths she wants to bust? That you don’t have to cleanse your skin in the morning. “I hear a lot of people say this, but washing your face in the morning is just as important as it is at night,” she says. “The products you use at night can leave traces on the skin, which will make it harder for the products you apply in the morning to soak in fully if not washed off. Your skin also secretes oil overnight, so if you don’t cleanse in the morning, all that sebum is sitting on the skin, creating a barrier and ultimately a dirtier slate!”

    Whether or not you’re a skincare lover, you’re likely familiar with or have heard of the mega-popular brand Drunk Elephant. Founded by Tiffany Masterson back in 2012, the skincare line has that ever-elusive ability to maintain a cast of longtime holy-grail favorites (such as the C-Firma Fresh Day Serum and the Alix Earle–approved D-Bronzi Anti-Pollution Sunshine Drops) while consistently debuting exciting new launches, always abiding by the brand’s founding Suspicious 6 ingredient-elimination philosophy.

    As a consumer frustrated by skin issues she couldn’t solve, Masterson took the matter into her own hands and began studying ingredients nonstop for three years, which led her to a unique process of elimination. “I was taking things out, adding them back in, and that’s what eventually evolved into the Suspicious 6,” she tells me. “This was shorthand for the six categories of ingredients that I felt were at the root of the skin issues I and others had battled: essential oils, fragrance/dyes, silicones, sodium lauryl sulfate, drying alcohols, and chemical screens.”

    All of Masterson’s research led her to think about skin differently too. “It was my experience that many of the skin behaviors people struggle with, including myself—acne, sensitivity, dryness, excessive oiliness—are caused or worsened by the very products we are using to treat those concerns,” she says. For example, she explains that many products designed to treat acne or oily skin often use harsh ingredients like drying alcohols, and those that are marketed to dry and sensitive skin often contain fragrances/dyes and essential oils. Essentially, it can all become a vicious cycle, which was something she was looking to change with Drunk Elephant. 

    “It’s what has really set us apart from everyone else,” she says. “Your routine is only as good as its worst ingredient, and for a comprehensive routine, you don’t need a lot of steps. A gentle cleanser, a moisturizer that’s loaded with antioxidants and soothing ingredients, a good vitamin C serum to help brighten and protect skin, a physical sunscreen, a well-formulated AHA/BHA exfoliant, and a stable, effective retinol—that’s all you really need for healthy skin, and depending on your age, you might not even need
    all of it.”

    Ever since I was sent Eauso Vert’s Discovery Set ($60), which features all five eco-conscious fragrances from the brand, I’ve found myself in a sizable choke hold. Not only does the brand prove that clean, nontoxic fragrances can actually last all day or night, but in my *very picky* eyes, each of the unique scents is also a sparkling masterpiece. If you twist my arm, I’ll tell you Sintra and TikTok-viral Purple Noon are my favorites, but I truly love them all.

    Founded by Tanya Gonzalez and Faye Harris,  Eauso Vert has a refreshing commitment to transparency and sustainability—a rarity in an industry that is often cloaked in undisclosed trade secrets, many of which are, quite literally, toxic. “Manufacturers aren’t legally required to disclose the ingredients used in their fragrances,” Harris explains. “This means the term ‘fragrance’ can house a mixture of potentially hundreds of undisclosed chemicals if the manufacturer chooses not to share this detail. Without transparency, consumers can’t really make informed decisions about the product they use.” (Eauso Vert, for the record, uses 13 upcycled ingredients within its five-scent lineup in addition to 97 to 99% of ingredients developed using green chemistry.)

    Even though skincare, haircare, and makeup have made huge strides in the “clean” category, Gonzalez and Harris (who met during their 10+ years working in beauty marketing) noticed a gaping hole in the luxury-fragrance arena. “We wanted to build something really intentional in our sustainability efforts and the design of the brand—everything from packaging to formulation to community,” says Harris. “We developed the concept of Eauso Vert to open the conversation of transparency and sustainability within the luxury-fragrance category while creating these really unique, long-lasting, genderless scents.” 

    While the founders both told me their own Eauso favorites (Joga and Vanilla Embers for Gonzalez and Purple Noon and Vanilla Embers for Harris), I was curious to get to know the rest of their beauty lineup, especially considering their many years of working in the beauty industry.     Hair is a very personal thing. It’s a form of self-expression and personal style, and a good hair day can give you a boost when you’re feeling self-conscious. Ever since I was young, I’ve found confidence in my thick, blonde hair, even when I was insecure about my skin. Believe it or not, Dianna Cohen, the founder of clean haircare brand Crown Affair, had this same experience. “I took so much pride in taking care of my hair—it was my armor to my acne,” she recalls. “It was a source of self-assurance and something I’ve cared for daily since I was young.”

    Now, Cohen has been working in the beauty and fashion industry for over 10 years, first as an editorial producer at beauty website Into the Gloss. Throughout her career, friends, colleagues, and even strangers have constantly asked her about her haircare routine. (Take one look at her luscious locks and you’ll see why.) And at a time when clean beauty was booming, Cohen noticed there was a major gap in the haircare market. There weren’t any luxurious formulas made with the clean ingredients she needed and the sleek packaging she wanted, so she decided to create them herself. And in 2019, Crown Affair was born, inspiring people around the globe to actually enjoy their haircare routines.
