  • Musicians Are Fleeing Kid Rock’s ‘Rock the Country’ Festival

No one wants to get in the pit with Kid Rock. Rock band Shinedown is the latest act to pull out of Robert James Ritchie’s MAGA-adjacent “Rock the Country” music festival. “We know this decision will create differences of opinion. But we do not want to participate in something we believe will create further division,” the band wrote on Instagram February 6. “And to our fans, thank you for supporting and believing in us. We love and appreciate you always.” So far, Shinedown is the fourth musician/group to pull out of the “divisive” festival.

Rapper Ludacris was the first act to pull out of the “Rock the Country” festival, days after his name was seen on the official lineup. Reps told Rolling Stone Luda was never going to perform, and that his inclusion was a “mix-up.” Oopsie. “Lines got crossed and he wasn’t supposed to be on there,” they said. Shortly after that, country artists Morgan Wade and Carter Faith pulled out as well. Reality TV fans may remember Wade from her confusing friendship with Kyle Richards on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Wade’s music video teasing a romantic relationship with Richards.

Jason Aldean remains committed, as does Blake Shelton, Creed, Brooks & Dunn, Hank Williams Jr., Lynyrd Skynyrd, Riley Green, Miranda Lambert, and Jelly Roll. Aldean and Hank II’s politics are well-known. Jelly Roll demurred from speaking about his ideological stances at the Grammys Sunday night. When asked about America’s political climate after winning Best Contemporary Country Album, Mr. Roll said “You know, I’m a dumb redneck. I haven’t watched enough.” Jelly Roll also teased becoming more explicitly political within this upcoming week. “Everybody’s going to hear exactly what I have to say about it in the most loud and clear way I’ve ever spoken in my life,” he said. “So I look forward to it.”

  • Protesters Demand Venice Film Festival Take a Stance on Gaza

Pro-Palestine organizers are planning multiple protests at the Venice Film Festival from August 27 to September 6, calling on the festival to denounce “the genocide in Palestine perpetrated by Israel,” per The Hollywood Reporter. Over a dozen protesters arrived at the red carpet around 10 a.m. on August 27 ahead of the festival’s opening ceremonies, chanting “Free, free Palestine” and “Stop, stop genocide” while waving Palestinian flags. The demonstration comes in advance of an August 30 march down Santa Maria Elisabetta avenue, which will feature “hundreds of people,” according to a spokesperson for the march, Marina Vergnano. Vergnano said the goal of the march is to “shine the spotlight of the film festival in the right direction,” per Deadline. She also said the march received “hundreds of signatures from political groups, associations and groups from the Veneto region, but also well beyond,” demanding the festival take a public stance.

“At a time when the eyes of the world will be on Venice and the Film Festival, we have a duty to make the voices of all those who are outraged and rebelling heard: let us therefore turn the spotlight of the Festival on Palestine,” the Italian political groups participating in the march said in an August 25 statement announcing the protest, obtained by Deadline. “The denial of humanitarian aid, water and food is a strategy of genocide, carried out with the complicity of the U.S. and European governments, including the Italian one, which continues to support Israel economically, politically and diplomatically, continuing to supply weapons and maintaining trade agreements,” it reads.

The statement also called for Israeli actress Gal Gadot and IDF supporter and actor Gerard Butler to be disinvited from the festival. “We have been asked to turn down invitations to artists; we will not do that,” Venice chief Alberto Barbera said at Wednesday’s press conference, according to Variety. “If they want to be at the festival, they will be here. On the other hand, we have never hesitated to clearly declare our huge sadness and suffering vis-à-vis what is happening in Gaza and Palestine. The death of civilians and especially of children, who are victims, the collateral damage of a war which nobody has been able to terminate yet. I think there are no doubts in regard to the Biennale’s position on this.” A representative for Gadot told Deadline that Gadot “was never able nor was ever confirmed to attend the Venice Film Festival.”

Separately from the march, hundreds of members of the film community had previously signed a different open letter calling on the festival to make a “clear and unambiguous stand” on August 23. “We all have a duty to amplify the stories and voices of those who are being massacred, even with the complicit indifference of the West,” the letter states. Signatories included Arab and Tarzan Nasser, who won best director in Cannes Un Certain Regard 2025 for their film Once Upon a Time in Gaza; director Ken Loach; and the Italian actor Toni Servillo, who is starring in the 2025 Venice opener, Paolo Sorrentino’s La Grazia.

“The Biennale and the festival have always been, throughout their history, places of open discussion and sensitivity to all the most pressing issues facing society and the world,” the festival responded on August 23, citing the premiere of The Voice of Hind Rajab, a film from Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania about the killing of a 5-year-old Palestinian girl. The festival ended the statement with “The Biennale is, as always, open to dialogue.”

  • Coachella Couldn’t Pull Kendrick Lamar or Rihanna

Coachella Couldn’t Pull Kendrick Lamar or Rihanna

Reported Coachella headliner Fred again.. and non-headliner Kendrick Lamar.

Coachella just keeps striking out. Bloomberg reported that not one, but two of the festival’s top-choice headliners turned down 2025 appearances. Founder Paul Tollett reportedly approached Kendrick Lamar and Rihanna with offers last spring, and both declined. That would’ve been before Lamar even got the Super Bowl gig; per Bloomberg, he’s planning a stadium tour to follow. Rihanna, meanwhile, just seems to be focused on growing her business. (Sorry, no new-album hope there.) But how about Fred again.. — again? Hits Daily Double reported the U.K. dance producer “is a lock” for one of the headlining slots, just two years after he closed weekend two with Skrillex and Four Tet. Hits, a usually trusted Coachella source, also speculates that a country-pop act like Post Malone or Morgan Wallen could headline. (Hits also suggested Jelly Roll, but he’s already set to play Coachella’s country counterpart, Stagecoach.) On the rap front, Hits pitched Travis Scott after he was first set to headline in 2020. If Lamar’s out of this one, we hear Lil Wayne is available too.

Lamar and Rihanna would’ve helped the festival rebound after multiple pandemic cancellations, a chaotic 2023, and a pretty safe lineup earlier this year (that took weeks to sell out). While Fred again.. may be headliner material after closing Bonnaroo this year, he’s certainly not the A-list talent Coachella seems to be shooting for. Where’s a big rock reunion when you need one? Just not them.

Among thousands of sparkling lights, Coldplay debuted a new song with Little Simz during their headlining set at Glastonbury. Seemingly titled “We Pray,” the track comes from their upcoming album Moon Music, slated to release in October. Their fifth time headlining the festival, the group, led by Chris Martin, is kicking into album release mode. Their first single (which will probably make a live debut tonight as well) “feelslikeimfallinginlove” was a costly project; the music video reportedly cost about €3 million to make, according to a Greek news outlet. Below are some fan videos of the single debut.

SXSW Will No Longer Work With the U.S. Army or Defense Contractors

    [ad_1]

SXSW is ending its partnerships with the U.S. Army and defense contractors after pro-Palestine protests this year. “After careful consideration, we are revising our sponsorship model,” the festival said after opening applications for 2025. “As a result, the U.S. Army, and companies who engage in weapons manufacturing, will not be sponsors of SXSW 2025.” More than 60 artists and participants boycotted this year’s festival over SXSW’s ties to defense groups that supply Israeli weapons in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. The U.S. Army was a “super-sponsor” of the 2024 festival, and Collins Aerospace, a company under defense conglomerate RTX Corporation (f.k.a. Raytheon), also participated. “A music festival should not include war profiteers,” said Squirrel Flower, one of the first artists to boycott. “I refuse to be complicit in this and withdraw my art and labor in protest.”

SXSW previously defended its military ties amid this year’s controversy. The festival called the defense industry “a proving ground” for new technology and said working with the Army “is part of our commitment to bring forward ideas that shape our world.” The Army said it was “proud” to sponsor SXSW, which it called “a unique opportunity.”

  • Lana Del Rey Brought Disciple Billie Eilish to Her Coachella Resurrection

Lana Del Rey Brought Disciple Billie Eilish to Her Coachella Resurrection

    [ad_1]

Lana Del Rey promised a resurrection for her headlining spot at Coachella this weekend— on her billboard posted on the way to the festival referenced her “death” after being crucified for her Saturday Night Live performance in 2012. However, she said nothing about bringing out her disciple Billie Eilish to sing “ocean eyes” and “Video Games.” And how could she? By the time they finished harmonizing their whispers, they were stunned by each other’s presence. “Get the fuck out of my face,” joked Eilish after the performance. The two continued to gush over each other, with Del Rey raising up her protege. She praised, “Yep, that’s the voice of your generation, the voice of our generation. I”m so fucking grateful she’s standing next to me right now singing my favorite song of hers.” Eilish replied by giving the flower (crowns) back to the woman who influenced her, “This is the reason for half you bitches existence, including mine.” She’s not wrong; thou shalt be saved listening to Lana Del Rey.
