    Oregon’s commercial Dungeness crab season is being pushed back until at least December 16, state wildlife officials announced Thursday. The delay isn’t due to problems in Oregon waters—crab here met both meat quality and biotoxin standards—but because crab from Long Beach, Washington failed to meet the required 23% meat fill.

    The three West Coast states coordinate their commercial crab season openings, and most members of Oregon’s Dungeness Crab Advisory Committee supported waiting to maintain consistent fishing patterns and help stabilize the market.

    Washington will conduct another round of testing in the coming days. If Long Beach crab meets the meat fill requirement, the coastwide season will open December 16. If not, Oregon may consider a partial opening south of Cape Falcon, pending input from the fleet and the Tri-State committee.

    Whenever the season opens, Oregon boats will operate under a whale-protection advisory, urging crabbers to avoid areas where whales are feeding or migrating to reduce the risk of entanglements.

    The commercial season was originally targeted for December 1, but delays are common to ensure high-quality product and to align openings across Oregon, Washington, and California. Weekly updates will continue until a final decision is made.

    The commercial bay crab fishery will close December 1 and will reopen only if the ocean commercial season does. Meanwhile, the recreational ocean Dungeness crab season is still expected to reopen December 1, and recreational crabbing from beaches, bays, and docks remains open statewide. Officials urge crabbers to check the Shellfish Hotline or the state’s biotoxin webpage for the latest conditions.

    KATHMANDU, June 12: Finance Minister Prakash Sharan Mahat has made it clear that he has proposed the study of marijuana cultivation for recreational and medicinal purposes.

    “There has been a lot of discussion about cannabis cultivation. The leader of the opposition party, too, raised questions, asking the purpose behind the government’s proposal on the study of recreational and medicinal use of marijuana,” he said.

    Mahat said that the government prohibited cannabis cultivation and use because the foreign donors warned Nepal of stopping their aid if cannabis was not banned but now, with the changing scenario, a proposal has been made on the study of cannabis use for recreation and medicinal purposes because it’s become a big business. “While they keep benefitting (from cannabis use), should we not adhere to the old beliefs?” he asked

    Mahat made it clear that they were only trying to find the possibility of marijuana cultivation. He said that the government is serious about this matter.

    SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Springfield police have long viewed marijuana differently from other drugs, but have adapted even more this year.

    Amendment 3 made recreational marijuana legal in Missouri. But there are still rules.

    “You cannot drive while under the influence of marijuana,” said Police Chief Paul Williams.

    So far this year, Williams said SPD has arrested four people for marijuana-related crimes.

    “Three for people driving under the influence of marijuana and then one person under the age of 21,” said Williams. 

    Officers will not go after individuals who are using marijuana in compliance with state law, but they will continue to enforce marijuana laws, Williams said, especially on the roadways.

    SAN DIEGO — A shark attacked a woman Friday in the Pacific waters north of San Diego, officials said.

    The woman was treated at a hospital for puncture and laceration wounds to her upper right thigh, according to Jon Edelbrock, lifeguard chief for the city of Del Mar. She received stitches and is recovering.

    The shark may have been a juvenile white shark, Edelbrock said, but officials are waiting for scientists to confirm that. Juvenile white sharks often swim in the waters off Del Mar’s shoreline.

    A lifeguard spotted the woman and her friend just after 10 a.m. as they were heading back to shore following a mile-plus (kilometer-plus) swim, Edelbrock said. Their strokes changed and the friend was waving his arms for help in the water a few hundred yards (meters) from the beach, but outside the surf zone.

    Lifeguards, who did not spot the shark, helped the pair back to shore, he said.

    The beach is now closed for at least 48 hours under the city’s shark bite protocol.

    “She had a diligent swim buddy,” Edelbrock said. “They both maintained their composure quite well.”

    Del Mar is about 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of downtown San Diego.

    An 8-foot-long (2.44-meter-long) juvenile white shark washed up dead Sunday on the shores of Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve and State Beach, according to KSWB-TV. That’s nearly 3 miles (4.83 kilometers) south of Friday’s attack.

    German lawmakers on Wednesday approved plans to decriminalize the purchase and ownership of recreational cannabis, according to multiple news outlets, a significant step on the road to legalization and an opportunity for the North American industry to gain a foothold in Europe’s richest and most populous country.

    Germany’s federal cabinet reportedly approved a proposal from the health ministry to legalize the purchase and possession of small amounts of cannabis for recreational use as well as its sale and production.

    The plan, presented by health minister Karl Lauterbach, would allow adults to purchase and possess up to 30 grams of cannabis for their own recreational consumption.

    The government would regulate cannabis production, sale and distribution as part of legalization efforts, Lauterbach said at a press conference, according to Deutsche Welle.

    Cultivation would be limited to two or three plants per person and sales will be limited to specialist stores.

    Advertising and marketing cannabis products will also be banned, according to the plans.

    Lauterbach said the proposal makes for “the most liberal legalization of cannabis in Europe,” according to Deutsche Welle, as well as its “most regulated market.” The health minister has touted the legalization drive as part of a “safety first” approach to the drug that acknowledges the drug’s continued use and health risks alongside the black market currently fueling it. He said the approach could serve as a model for the whole of Europe, where only a handful of countries have decriminalized recreational cannabis and only one, Malta, has legalized it. The framework marks a potential boon for Germany’s young cannabis industry, as well as the North American firms already profiting from legalization and are keen to expand.

    What We Don’t Know

    The cabinet’s approval kicks off a potentially lengthy process to legalize cannabis. As a member of the EU, German laws must also comply with European legislation and lawmakers fear a poorly crafted framework could be torn down by the European Court of Justice. The court has previously said member states should prevent the sale of cannabis, a possible issue for Germany’s proposal of government regulation.

    What To Watch For

    According to Bloomberg, the German government plans to explore limiting the amount of THC in products for adults aged 21 and under. THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is a key psychoactive component in cannabis and is responsible for the drug’s high. Potent weed with higher amounts of THC can have a greater impact and is associated with more health risks than milder forms of the drug.
