    Though Ralph himself did not make the trip from the states, opting instead to watch from a live stream in New York, there was no shortage of star power.     “I always think of my father when I’m here, because this is the place where he would show me just how men were dressing,” David recalled. “We would walk the streets and see how Polo or Purple Label had become part of the culture. He’d say, ‘If it works in Italy, it means you’re a global brand.’”

    Following the show, as the models emerged from backstage to mingle with guests for canapés and cocktails, the scene became a veritable trunk show. “I think I need that Yankee bomber jacket,” Golding told VF. He was just one of many guests, celebrity and otherwise, who were already drafting their wish lists. For the TikTok set, it was a particular Western fringe jacket that caught their eye, and for the discerning group of department store buyers, a trio of military-inspired officer coats not seen in the brand’s design canon since the late-90s.

    The only thing that could tempt some guests to exit was the promise of a meal at the nearby Ralph’s Bar, a smaller satellite version of New York’s The Polo Bar inside the Ralph Lauren Milan flagship store on Via della Spiga. Here, a more subdued atmosphere unfolded for a select few, with Hemsworth and fiancée Gabriella Brooks unwinding in the back loggia making plans for a return to the French Alps, and Domingo with husband Raúl in the wood-paneled bar enjoying Ridgway margaritas; a recipe perfected in the home bar at Lauren’s Double RL Ranch in Colorado. Cast in a warm glow and dotted with equestrian oil paintings and paraphernalia, it all felt a world away from the scrum of flashbulbs and screaming fans outside, and nothing short of glamorous.

  • American menswear designer Jeffrey Banks is finally sharing his story and starting a new chapter

    NEW YORK (AP) — Designer Jeffrey Banks spent years co-authoring seven books on fashion before finally deciding it was time to share his own story.

    The menswear designer recounts more than 50 years in fashion, from working for Ralph Lauren to launching his own label, in his new memoir “Storyteller: Tales from a Fashion Insider.”

    At 72, Banks is having a breakout year. One of his designs was selected by the Metropolitan Museum of Art for its “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” exhibit, and he’s relaunching his eponymous menswear label.

    Banks debuted his label of polished tailoring and American sportswear back in 1976 at 21. His menswear played with color and texture: think tartan plaid jackets, pinstriped suits and furs. And at a time when there were few Black designers, his clothes were being sold in major department stores from Macy’s to Bergdorf Goodman and he was landing multimillion-dollar deals.

    For his Jeffrey Banks menswear relaunch in January, he’s moving away from suiting and embracing sustainable sportswear, from knits to underwear.

    “As much as I love suits and tailored clothing,” he told The Associated Press, “I don’t think that’s the business for now, and the business of young people.”

    His industry friends have rallied around him on his book tour. The Council of Fashion Designers of America hosted a conversation between Banks and Isaac Mizrahi last week to celebrate the publication of Banks’ book.

    Mizrahi, who worked for Banks on his womenswear line, called him a trendsetter in the commercial space.

    “I was so inspired when I was working with him, and he was one of the first people to do a lot of things at once,” Mizrahi said. “I looked at that, and I thought that was real success.”

    Banks is a natural storyteller

    Banks’ memoir doubles as a love letter to the family, loved ones and fashionable friends who supported him over the years. One motivation for doing the book, he said, was to ensure his mother, who turns 105 in January, could read it.

    “She instilled in me and in my sister, as did my father, the idea that if we wanted something bad enough and we were willing to work hard enough for it, we could achieve and get anything that we wanted,” Banks said. “And the fact that we were Black, that shouldn’t make a difference.”

    Banks and his mother shared a love of clothing. At 10, he designed a yellow asymmetrical wool coat and matching sheath dress for her to wear on Easter Sunday.

    Former CFDA President Stan Herman, 97, said that Banks is a natural storyteller with an impeccable memory, who he joked, “was born with a Vogue in his crib.”

    In his book, he highlights his “Mentors” and “Best Friends Forever” through entertaining anecdotes and photos of fashion industry stalwarts like late designer Perry Ellis and celebrities like Bobby Short, Barbra Streisand and Audrey Hepburn. Ever the gentleman, Banks’ book does not divulge all his insider secrets despite working so closely with some of the biggest names in fashion.

    Banks’ fashion ascent

    Banks credits fashion industry giants Lauren and Calvin Klein as his mentors.

    He first met Lauren as a teenager while working at Britches of Georgetowne, a menswear store in Washington, D.C. In his book, Banks shares how Lauren gave him one of his personal suits to wear for prom before he later worked for the designer while attending Pratt Institute. Banks said the two first bonded over their admiration of Hollywood movie stars like Cary Grant and Fred Astaire.

    “Ralph always treated me like an equal, I mean, from Day One,” Banks said. “He always said … I’m his other son.”

    While attending the Parsons School of Design, Banks was personally recruited by Klein. At his first fashion show, Banks said he sat Klein and Lauren next to one another.

    It was while building Klein’s menswear line that Banks was offered the chance to start his own label. He then ventured into men’s outerwear with Lakeland, furs with Alixandre, a Jeffrey Banks Boys’ line and even womenswear.

    In 1980, he was tapped to overhaul Merona Sport, a family sportswear brand, he turned into a money-making juggernaut that catapulted his career. He writes that the brand jumped from generating $7 million to $70 million within six months. At the time, Mizrahi said, it was like Banks had “struck gold.”

    As Banks goes back to his roots with the relaunch of this menswear label, his fashion community is ready to embrace him again.

    “He’s still as relevant as ever,” Fern Mallis, former head of The Council of Fashion Designers of America, said. “And I think there’s definitely a place for him in the market, he’s got a wonderful following of fashionista friends. … We’ll be wearing it, posting it and writing about it.”

    The choice of venue was inspired by the brand’s first women’s show in 1972, which saw Lauren present to a small group of editors and friends in his office. There, Christy Turlington, Anok Yai, Imaan Hammam, Elaine Irwin, Karolina Kurková, and Irina Shayk, among other models, brought to life the timelessness embodied by the collection, which features shimmering gowns galore alongside impeccably cut workwear in a range of neutral, warm tones.

    “The woman I design for has a beauty that comes from an inner confidence,” Lauren explained in the collection’s show notes. “She dresses for herself. Her style is personal and bold. She’ll throw a hand-tailored jacket over a glamorous evening dress. She believes in quiet sophistication not defined by time or trends. My fall/holiday 2024 collection is inspired by that woman, her sense of timelessness, her individuality—a style that is forever.”

    Gilded Age actor Spector, who was joined at the show by his wife, Rebecca Hall, called Lauren’s dedication to honoring his singular vision “incredibly impressive.” “Despite the scale of the company and the breadth of that vision, there’s a personal quality that feels precious these days,” he said.

    Following the presentation, guests stepped out to celebrate the collection at the Polo Bar, another venue steeped in Lauren’s creativity.

The brand didn’t invent the square-end tie, but they damn-near perfected it, a “new and irreverent” flourish Crowley still appreciates today. Over half a century on, the square-end remains a low-key way to flex your menswear chops—and it looks fresh as ever.

    The Tunnel is the new Runway. Some of the best players in the NFL sport bold colors, fun prints, standout shoes, vests, and ski masks. Others choose leathers, oversized sweaters, and iced-out chains. Regardless, the men of the National Football League are showing they have talent and style.

    We’re in a new era of men’s fashion where we’ve begun holding men to higher standards. Instead of just the trusty sweatpants and t-shirt combo we’d have normally expected, we’ve come to expect an ostentatious Gameday Fit. It’s each player’s chance to let their personality shine through before they shove into their pads for 3 and a half hours.

    NFL stars like the Buffalo Bills’ wide receiver, Stefon Diggs, are known for donning insane fits that rival fashion week. And we’re not the only ones paying attention, GQ now has readers voting for the NFL’s Most Stylish Player 2023 – much like they did for the NBA and winner Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

    Amongst a star-studded bracket with names like Travis Kelce, Ceedee Lamb, and Saquon Barkley, the resounding winner was the Philadelphia Eagles’ wide receiver Devonta Smith. Smith defeated Stefon Diggs in the final round of voting. While Smith looks forward to the Super Bowl this upcoming Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs, I’m sure this award is equally important to him.

    Kelce is known for saying things like “I’m not here to play dress up” when wearing flip flops on gameday. He’s famously dressed as Doug Whitmore from 50 First Dates or in an Ocean Drive shirt (a Sea Isle City, NJ bar where Kelce holds fundraisers). If you want to dress like the older Kelce, buy a pair of Rainbows and cut your jeans to short length…it’s about fun and comfort.

    Dress Like Travis Kelce

    Jason’s younger brother, Kansas City tight end, Travis Kelce, has his own clothing line “Tru Kolors,” selling 90’s-inspired athleisure. He wears different styles of peacoats, experiments with different prints, and is not afraid of accessorizing. Travis has always been interested in fashion outside of football.

    A Travis Kelce look is not complete without a statement peacoat like this one. From there, don’t be afraid to accessorize with chains, watches, sunglasses, and hats. It’s an easy way to spice up any old “basic” outfit.

    Ralph Lauren is as American as apple pie. The legendary designer helped put U.S. fashion on the map in the ’60s and ’70s and has ensured that local design remains part of the global fashion conversation for the past five decades. Born in the Bronx, New York City, it’s no wonder why he quickly became a staple at NYFW. But for one special night, Lauren decided to shed his East Coast roots and decamp to California, where he presented his spring/summer 2023 collection to much fanfare. 

    The show featured a whopping 103 looks that spanned the entire Ralph Lauren universe, including Collection, Purple Label, Double RL, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Childrenswear.
