Fort Worth’s Dr. Opal Lee, the woman who led the charge to make Juneteenth a federal holiday, has been immortalized in the form of a Barbie doll.

The 99-year-old activist’s doll is the latest addition to the Barbie Inspiring Women collection, which “honors extraordinary women from all fields who inspire future generations.”

The doll wears a blue “Opal’s Walk For Freedom” T-shirt, white pants and sneakers, in homage to the annual 2.5-mile walk, which commemorates the 2.5 years it took for news of emancipation to reach slaves in Texas.

Hundreds of people attended last year’s walk, which began on Foch Street in Fort Worth near Farrington Field.

The doll can be purchased at Target for $35.50, or ordered online at MattelCreations.com.
