  • Filling Out The 2026 Coaching Staff – Philadelphia Sports Nation

    We’re a few days from finding out the winner of Super Bowl LX and the Eagles have already begun preparations to fill out position coaches while simultaneously opening up more availabilities. Making the offseason checklist a little bit longer. 

    The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

    It didn’t take very long after the wildcard round for Howie Roseman to confirm the Eagles would be looking for their 5th Offensive Coordinator during the 6-year Nick Sirianni tenure. Moving on from Patullo was the right decision, as the Eagles struggled 18+ weeks and seemingly burned some extra bridges as things went on. With an Eagles offense that had 10/11 returning offensive starters, (Mekhi Becton – Tyler Steen) the Eagles went from a powerhouse ranking 5th in PPG (29.0) during the 2024 campaign into 19th with only 22.1 PPG. 

    Chopping off an entire touchdown from the Eagles scoring would’ve been enough points for them to finish the year 14-3. Alas, safe & turnover free football ended their season over a month ago.

    Sean Mannion 

    Since retiring in 2023 Mannion has been involved with the Green Bay Packers as both Offensive Assitant and Quarterbacks Coach. Getting to work alongside Matt LaFleur, viewed as an elite coach around the league. And working with the development of Jordan Love the past few seasons has primed Mannion for a promotion heading into the 2026 season. 

    Was he the Eagles first option? Probably not. But as Mike McDaniel, Brian Daboll and other top OC/HC options came off the board the Eagles had to strike for their guy. Giving Mannion autonomy with the offense opened the door for creativity and the ability to bring in guys he wanted. 

    Yesterday, the Eagles hired Ryan Mahaffey as the Run Game Coordinator and Tight Ends Coach. Filling out roles previously filled by Jeff Stoutland and Jason Michael. 

    Mahaffey was previously in Green Bay with Mannion as the wide receivers coach and Assistant offensive line coach. 

    So far the Eagles new hires are proving that Mannion will get to bring in his own staff. But pushing out tenured coaches like Jeff Stoutland who helped develop elite players from Jason Kelce and Lane Johnson, to turning a rugby player into an All-Pro in Jordan Mailata. 

    There’s also no current answer whether the team will retain Scot Loeffler who might have been the mastermind behind getting Dallas Goedert 11 touchdowns in 2025. While it seems coaches like Aaron Moorehead who has hung onto his job as wide receiver coach for the last 6 years as the Eagles have struggled to develop a single receiver outside of DeVonta Smith. Who, let’s be real. Wasn’t turned into the player he is today from the help of Moorehead.  

    There’s still a long offseason to go with plenty of roster and coaching changes along the way. Who’s on your list for the Eagles next move?

    Last season — Jeff Stoutland’s Eagles offensive line was the best in the NFL. Loaded with Pro Bowl talent — the Eagles overpowered their way to an NFL Championship by both protecting Jalen Hurts and opening up huge running lanes for Saquon Barkley.

    This season — injuries up front have stymied the running attack and frustrated the timing of the Eagles aerial assault. Lane Johnson, Landon Dickerson, Cam Jurgens, and Jordan Mailata have all been dealing with injuries.

    While getting healthy would be the perfect holiday wish for the Eagles — adding and promoting some additional talent is always a plus. Two weeks ago — the Eagles opened the practice window for Guard/Center Willie Lampkin. The former All-American had a tremendous college career at both Coastal Carolina and also North Carolina. Lampkin was signed by the Los Angeles Rams as an undrafted free agent last year. He was then claimed by the Eagles in August.

    This week — the Eagles opened the 21-Day Practice Window for their 191st Selection in the 2025 NFL Draft in Offensive Tackle Myles Hinton. The former National Champion helped to anchor offensive lines at both Stanford and also Michigan.

    Jordan Mialata isn’t the only international star on the team from Australia. The Eagles placed offensive tackle Luke Felix-Fualalo Practice Squad Injured Reserve list this week. After a college career at both Hawaii and Utah — he was originally signed as a UDFA by the Seattle Seahawks and then by the Eagles at the end of August. 

    He may not be an option right now — but will be in the near future.

    7 Weeks into the season, and the Eagles sit at 3-2. Good enough for 2nd in the NFC East, and 9th in the NFC.

    It might not be the perfect situation, but there’s still 11 weeks worth of football to watch. And with  the Saints falling to 2-5 tonight, the Eagles will have an opportunity to make another NFC team 2-5 on Sunday.

    The New York Giants

    While Sunday will be the Eagles first divisional matchup on the season, the Giants have already stacked up losses against the Commanders (21-18) and Cowboys (20-15). Not that the Giants were expected to be fighting for a top seed in the NFC, but dropping their first 2 divisional games wouldn’t help.

    Averaging only 16 points per game, the Giants offense has struggled with and without Rookie WR Malik Nabers. Managing to score a season high 29 without Nabers against Seattle, and struggling to put up more than 7 against the Bengals.

    The good news is, the Giants defense gives up an average of 20.16 points per game.

    Falling to 2-4 on the season was the least of the Giants woes with an inconsistent level of play that rivals the Eagles. Much like in Philly, the Giants injury report was stacking up too.

    Injuries In The Trenches

    Both of these teams have thrived off their lines. The Eagles, relying on the high-level of play of the offensive line, will be without Jordan Mailata. With concern if Milton Williams and Jalen Carter will be available for Sundays game.

    And on the blue sideline, the Giants have an even worse problem. It was announced on Wednesday that Andrew Thomas would miss the rest of the season with a Lisfranc injury, and on the other side of the ball, with 26 combined Sacks, the Giants defensive line has carried the weight of their success. However with Kayvon Thibodeaux on IR for the next few weeks. The list goes on as both Dexter Lawrence AND Brian Burns have yet to practice at this point in the week.

    How Could The Offense Fare?

    With injuries on both lines for BOTH teams, running backs could make or break the game for either team. The Eagles know what they have, and what they can get out of Saquon Barkley. If Fred Johnson is able to continue to play successfully as the Eagles LT for the next few weeks, the offense might continue to run smoothly in an offense that has only had its two star receivers for 2 games of the season.

    Averaging 21.2 points a game this season doesn’t paint as clear a picture of an offense that still hunts for the big play and refuses to take points when they matter. A wounded Giants team provides a perfect chance to get the offense back in full swing, and hopefully see a high scoring team like we did in Brazil.

     

    There’s multiple reunions at MetLife this weekend. Mekhi Becton’s return to his former home stadium. And Saquon’s return to play his former team – and now divisional rival.

    The Philadelphia Eagles’ 2024 preseason is now just a week away. Let’s preview the action.

    Eagles’ Three Opponents

    The Eagles have three opponents this preseason, one of which is at home and two of which are on the road. Let’s take a look.

    At 7:30 PM EST on Friday, Aug. 9, the Eagles visit the Baltimore Ravens for their first contest. Baltimore had won 24 straight games in the preseason with their last win ironically being at home against Philadelphia, then they lost two straight to end the streak in 2023.

    At 7:00 PM EST on Thursday, Aug. 15, the Eagles will visit the New England Patriots for their second preseason showdown. We’ll presumably see rookie quarterback Drake Maye take some snaps for them, so it could be a packed crowd.

    The Eagles will finish their preseason slate during a 1:00 PM EST game against the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday, Aug. 24 at Lincoln Financial Field. Minnesota hasn’t won a preseason contest since Aug. 24, 2019.

    Eagles’ Preseason Struggles

    Since winning the Super Bowl in 2017, the preseason has not been kind to the Eagles record-wise. Though a win-loss record doesn’t mean that much when you’re tracking individual results, it hasn’t been pretty.

    Philadelphia has a 3-11-2 record in the preseason following their Super Bowl victory. With a minus-156-point differential in that span, they’re losing each game by just under 10 points—that’s especially surprising considering how low-scoring the games tend to be.

    Below are their season-by-season results since 2018 (with the exception of 2020, which was canceled). Their point differential is in parenthesis:

    • 2023: 0-2-1 (Minus-15)
    • 2022: 1-2 (Minus-40)
    • 2021: 0-2-1 (Minus-43)
    • 2019: 1-2 (Minus-20)
    • 2018: 1-3 (Minus-38)

    Considering their struggles (and the dominance of the Ravens), don’t expect the Eagles to sweep the slate or anything. Based on their last five showings in the preseason, the opposite is probably more likely.

    Four Eagles to Watch

    This preseason, there are plenty of players to look out for—here, we’ll highlight four in particular. That list consists of offensive lineman Mekhi Becton, running back Will Shipley, wide receiver Johnny Wilson, and edge Jalyx Hunt.

    Becton is an interesting one due to his potential. The New York Jets’ top draft pick from 2020, his athleticism is what makes him stand out. He could hold a decent role with the Eagles in 2024 depending on injuries. He’s probably not an instant starter, but he could certainly work his way up there.

    Taken in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, Shipley has reportedly impressed the Eagles’ coaches. While Saquon Barkley clearly has the starting running back spot taken, the former could take some reps from Kenneth Gainwell during the season as the second-string running back. Shipley could be a solid option for the Eagles, so he should get some usage in the preseason.

    Wilson is a big receiver who was taken in the sixth round of the 2024 class. He should be allowed to take over during preseason—it’ll be interesting to watch. Parris Campbell seems to be the firm third-string wideout behind A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, but Wilson could get some snaps in the regular season.

    Hunt was drafted in the third round of this past draft by the Eagles as a highly athletic threat on the edge. He should get some reps in the regular season and perhaps get a sizable role pretty soon for a third-round pick.

    With only a month left until the start of the 2024 regular season, Eagles football is very close. The preseason should serve as a small taste of what’s to come.
