    IMPS scam: 67 locations searched by CBI in Rajasthan and Maharashtra

    The CBI has conducted searches at 67 locations in seven cities of Rajasthan and Maharashtra in connection with the ₹820-crore IMPS scam in UCO bank, officials said Thursday.

    The case pertains to over 8,53,049 IMPS (Immediate Payment System) transactions that took place between November 10 and November 13 last year in the bank.

    “IMPS inward transactions initiated from around 14,600 account holders of seven private banks were wrongfully posted in the accounts of over 41,000 UCO Bank account holders. This resulted in ₹820 crore being credited to UCO Bank accounts without actual debiting from the originating banks,” the CBI Spokesperson said.

    The searches in Rajasthan and Maharashtra on Wednesday focused on people who received the money and withdrew it rather than returning it to the bank, officials said. This is the second round of searches.

    “Earlier in December 2023, searches were conducted at 13 locations involving private individuals and UCO Bank officials in Kolkata and Mangalore,” the Spokesperson said.

    Over 330 police personnel, including 120 from Rajasthan Police, in 40 teams and 80 independent witnesses were involved in the action spread across multiple cities including Jodhpur, Jaipur, Jalore, Nagaur, Barmer, Phalodi) and Pune (Maharashtra).

    “During these operations, approximately 130 incriminating documents related to UCO Bank and IDFC, as well as 43 digital devices (including 40 mobile phones, 2 hard disks, and 1 internet dongle) were seized for forensic analysis.

    “Additionally, 30 suspects were also found and examined on the spot,” the Spokesperson said.

    Jalna: A man was killed by his family members in Ambad taluka in Maharashtra’s Jalna district, over his liquor and marijuana addiction. The accused later set his body on fire.

    Police on Wednesday said all the accused have been arrested, according to PTI.

    The 35-year-old man was killed by his father, brother and son as they were fed up with his addition to liquor and marijuana.

    On Monday, the man was attacked in his field by his family members following an argument with them. Realising that he had succumbed to his injuries, they burned his body to escape police action, a police officer said.

    A case of destruction of evidence and murder was registered against the accused family members for killing the man.

    In another unrelated case, an 18-year-old man was axed to death by his father on Monday in Ambagaon village in Odisha’s Koraput district, over his addiction to alcohol.

    The father, identified as Samara Budia, was arrested by the police on Tuesday and was charged of killing his son, Surendra. The matter came to light when Surendra’s mother returned to the house and saw her son laying in pool of blood. Surendra’s relatives registered a complaint with the police on Monday night.

    Maharashtra govt warns of Covid spike citing evasive XBB variant

    The Maharashtra government on Monday warned of Covid spike due to XBB, a highly infectious sub-variant of Omicron. The state witnessed a 17.7 per cent rise in infection cases this week and now fears that this number may go up in the coming weeks due to the new variant, which was first detected in Singapore.  

    India too has reported some cases of this new variant.

    In a bulletin, the Maharashtra health department said the XBB variant reported in the state had a ‘growth advantage over BA.2.75 and immune evasive property’.

    The BA.2.3.20 and BQ.1 variants have also been detected in the state, a first for the country. The bulletin said that new coronavirus cases rose by 17.17 per cent in the October 10-16 period when compared to last week between October 3 and 9. The spike was particularly in densely-populated Thane, Raigad, and Mumbai.

    The bulletin said that some experts are predicting a rise in Covid cases in the coming winter season, especially in the festive season.

    The proportion of BA.2.75, an Omicron sub-variant, among cases detected had decreased from 95 per cent to 76 per cent, it said, adding that people must not ignore flu-like symptoms and should get medical advice at the earliest.

    “They must observe Covid-appropriate behaviour at the earliest. Persons with comorbidities need to take extra precautions while visiting public places. Persons suffering from an influenza-like illness should avoid public contact as much as possible,” the bulletin advised.

    Kerala too has started intensifying preventive measures in the state. In a statement, Kerala Health Minister Veena George said as the new genetic variants – XBB and XBB1 – of Covid are more contagious than earlier ones, everyone should be more careful and wear masks properly for self-protection.

    The minister said around 1.8 per cent of those infected by the new variants may require hospitalisation, but as of now, there was no cause for concern.
