  • Cars torched, window smashed in pair of South L.A. street takeovers. Neighbors are weary

Cars torched, window smashed in pair of South L.A. street takeovers. Neighbors are weary

    [ad_1]

Two street takeovers in South Los Angeles veered into vandalism early Tuesday morning as the window of a local car dealership was smashed and cars were set on fire.

The Los Angeles police and fire departments responded a few minutes past midnight to a call of a vehicle on fire and a possible street takeover at the intersection of Normandie and Florence avenues. The vehicle was so charred, it was not driveable and had to be impounded, according to police.

Margaret Stewart, a public information officer with the Los Angeles Fire Department, said the large crowd and vehicles were packed tightly, and firefighters struggled to reach the flaming vehicle.

The second call came at 3:23 a.m. from the intersection of Jefferson Boulevard and Figueroa Street, walking distance from the main USC campus. Los Angeles police officers and firefighters responded to another report of a rowdy takeover, with a second vehicle that had caught fire, this one containing fireworks.

In video of the street takeover obtained by KABC7, loud popping noises can be heard in the background as crowds run past Felix Chevrolet on Figueroa Street. Glass is scattered on the ground from a shattered window at the car dealership. One individual in a ski mask appears to grab items from a gray sedan that is on fire.

In each takeover incident, fresh black skid marks on the asphalt traced where drivers had spun “doughnuts” repeatedly in the night.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, there were no injuries and no arrests at either incident.

Residents of South Los Angeles are crying foul.

“I live in the neighborhood and I can hear it at night,” said Emma, who works at a local business. Emma, who provided only her first name out of fear for her safety, says the noise often wakes her and her neighbors in the middle of the night, with the abrupt explosion of fireworks setting off car alarms. She said these late-night rendezvous have increased to several times a week.

The Avalon Gardens resident believes the culprits have been emboldened by law enforcement that she says remains lax in spite of neighbors’ numerous complaints to the city.

“When [police] do arrive, it’s 15 minutes too late,” when the crowds have already dispersed and gone home, she added.

From 2019 to 2020, the number of street takeovers nearly doubled amid the pandemic. The illegal sideshows have been deadly, as The Times has previously reported. Earlier this year, another street takeover left two sedans burning at the intersection of West 18th and Main streets.

The L.A. City Council has attempted to curb street racing and takeovers by installing speed bumps at 20 popular meetups to prevent drivers from performing tricks.

  • Search warrants issued, gang targeted in killing of ‘General Hospital’ actor Johnny Wactor

Search warrants issued, gang targeted in killing of ‘General Hospital’ actor Johnny Wactor

    [ad_1]

Los Angeles police are serving search warrants, seeking to make arrests in the slaying of “General Hospital” actor Johnny Wactor, law enforcement sources said Thursday.

The sources, who were not authorized to speak publicly about the case, said the investigation is focusing on Florencia 13 gang members tied to catalytic converter thefts in the region.

A statement of probable cause used to obtain the warrants named Robert Barceleau, Sergio Estrada and Leonel Gutierrez as suspects. The three were targeted after police said their fingerprints matched those lifted from a floor jack they used while trying to steal Wactor’s catalytic converter.

After reviewing videos and interviewing witnesses, homicide detectives with the Los Angeles Police Department identified three men, one with distinctive facial tattoos, who they say jacked Wactor’s car on Hope Street near Pico Boulevard to steal its catalytic converter before shooting and killing him May 25.

A statement of probable cause used to obtain the warrants named Robert Barceleau, Sergio Estrada and Leonel Gutierrez as suspects. The three were targeted after police said their fingerprints matched those lifted from a floor jack they used while trying to steal Wactor’s catalytic converter.

Wactor had finished a shift at the nearby Level 8 bar about 3:20 a.m. when he and co-worker Anita Joy were walking to his car and interrupted the thieves.

Wactor first thought his car was being towed, Joy said. After realizing that wasn’t the case, he asked the men to leave, showing his open hands to indicate he wasn’t a threat. Nevertheless, he was shot at close range, Joy said. A security guard from the bar said he found Joy and the mortally wounded Wactor and called 911.

Joy asked Wactor whether he was OK, and he responded, “Nope. I’ve been shot,” according to the statement of probable cause.

After the shooting, the suspects fled north on Hope Street in a stolen getaway car described as a 2018 black four-door Infiniti Q50 with a tan interior, police said.

Thieves target catalytic converters because they contain precious metals, including rhodium, palladium and platinum. They can sell for hundreds of dollars to auto parts suppliers or scrapyards, where they can be melted down and the valuable metals extracted.

Thefts of catalytic converters skyrocketed in California during the COVID-19 pandemic. That prompted new state laws that make it illegal for recyclers to buy the parts from anyone other than the vehicle’s legal owner or a licensed dealer. Penalties were increased for buyers who fail to certify that a catalytic converter wasn’t stolen.

  • Police arrest suspect in LAX road rage fight that knocked elderly woman unconscious

Police arrest suspect in LAX road rage fight that knocked elderly woman unconscious

    [ad_1]

Los Angeles police arrested a man Friday in connection with a road-rage-fueled scuffle at Los Angeles International Airport that knocked an elderly woman to the ground, leaving her unconscious.

Jasan Givens Sr. was arrested shortly after 10 a.m. in South L.A.’s Chesterfield Square neighborhood by members of an LAPD and airport police task force.

According to online records, he was booked into the Los Angeles Police Department’s 77th Street Division jail on suspicion of felony battery and his bail was set at $50,000. Givens is scheduled to make his first court appearance July 12.

Police say that a preliminary investigation suggests that Givens, 38, and another man got into a heated dispute before their fight May 31. The incident occurred about 9:25 a.m.

Video from a surveillance camera shows a man, who police say was Givens, chasing after a shirtless man on the sidewalk before continuing into the street outside baggage claim. There, an elderly woman was standing while her luggage was being unloaded from her vehicle.

Givens and the other man then slam into the woman, just as Givens tackles the other man from behind, the video shows. The woman was knocked to the ground face-down.

The two men can then be seen wrestling with each other on the ground behind the vehicle as the woman lies motionless beside them as others move in to check on her.

The woman, who has not been identified, was knocked unconscious and taken to a hospital in critical condition, police said. She has since been released. There were no further details about the extent of her injuries.

While Givens fled the scene, KTLA-TV Channel 5 reported the other man involved in the fight was arrested, according to police.

“The most shocking thing … is after this happened, both the individuals failed to render aid,” LAPD Det. Scott Danielson told the station. “Our victim here could be your mother or your grandmother.”

A woman who allegedly grabbed and then tried to run off with a 4-year-old boy from an L.A. Target store earlier this week is now in police custody.

The unidentified woman was found and taken into custody shortly after 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in North Hollywood near the intersection of Magnolia Boulevard and Tujunga Avenue, the Los Angeles Police Department announced on X.

  • Los Angeles police searching for assailant in three fatal shootings of homeless people

Los Angeles police searching for assailant in three fatal shootings of homeless people

    [ad_1]

Los Angeles police have launched a search for a killer suspected of fatally shooting three homeless people in separate incidents around the city, police officials announced Friday.

All three killings occurred in the early morning hours over a three-day span in November, Police Chief Michel Moore said at an afternoon news conference at police headquarters downtown, where he was joined by Dist. Atty. George Gascón and Mayor Karen Bass.

“This is a killer preying on the unhoused,” Bass said.

The first victim was shot about 3:10 am. on Nov. 26 in an alley near the intersection of 110th Street and Vermont Avenue in South L.A., police said. The man, identified by police as Jose Bolanos, 37, was found dead with a gunshot wound.

The following day, Mark Diggs, 62, was shot and killed about 4:45 a.m. in the 600 block of Mateo Street. Moore said Diggs was pushing a shopping cart and had stopped to plug in his phone and was about to go to sleep when the assailant approached him and shot him.

The third shooting occurred on Nov. 29 about 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of Avenue 18 and Pasadena Avenue in the Lincoln Heights area, where the body of a 52-year-old adult Latino man was discovered.

Police did not identify the victim pending notification of his family.

Moore said in all three instances the victims were alone and out in the open.

“Each one was shot and killed as they slept” or were preparing to turn in for the night, Moore said.

Moore said the department has set up a task force of investigators that is working 24/7 to apprehend the killer.

Bass urged the city’s homeless residents not to sleep alone and to seek available services. She said homeless outreach workers have been informing those living on the street about the killings and the search for the killer.

“To the person responsible for this, I say this: We will find you, we will catch you and you will be held accountable.”

“An assault on one of us is an assault on all of us,” Gascón said.

Times staff writer Richard Winton contributed to this report.
