  • Snowy footprints lead police to alleged vape thief

Police responded to a business alarm in the 1300 block of Southwest Market Street early Sunday. When they arrived, they discovered the front door was shattered.     It is with heartfelt sorrow that we share the passing of K9 Spike, a brave and cherished member of the Burbank Police Department. Spike gave his life in the line of duty after being struck by gunfire during a critical incident involving an armed suspect.

    K9 Spike was far more than a service animal, he was a loyal partner and a symbol of courage. Known for his gentle nature off duty and his steadfast determination while serving, Spike embodied the highest ideals of dedication and protection. His sacrifice will never be forgotten.

  • Burbank Police K-9 ‘Spike’ Succumbed Of Injuries From Gun Shot Wounds During Traffic Stop

    This is a Press Release released at 2:53 this morning from the Burbank Police Department regarding the incident.

    The following is an update to an earlier news release regarding a shooting involving a Burbank Police canine.

    During the incident, the police canine was struck by gunfire from a suspect armed with a handgun. The police canine was transported to a local emergency veterinarian, but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

    With the assistance of an air support unit, police officers were able to see the suspect hiding in terrain adjacent to the northbound Interstate-5 freeway near the Buena Vista Street on-ramp. The terrain was thick, uneven, and overgrown. The suspect was seen still armed with the handgun within proximity of a residential neighborhood.

    Additional resources were necessary, so the incident transitioned into a joint agency operation between the Burbank and Glendale Police Departments. This included additional police canine units, crisis negotiators, and the Burbank Police Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT).

    Multiple efforts were made to communicate and negotiate with the suspect, encouraging him to surrender peacefully. Officers established a containment and deployed less lethal systems in an attempt to induce him to surrender.

    During these attempts, the suspect began shooting at police officers, striking police vehicles parked near the scene. Officers returned fire, hitting the suspect. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. The handgun was recovered.

    The Burbank K-9 Spike was a two-year-old Old Belgian Malinois. He celebrated his Birthday just days ago.

    Spike recently put on a demonstration during National Night Out, where hundreds watched him perform.

    The suspect’s identity is not yet known.

    This investigation is ongoing and is expected to continue well into daylight hours when investigators can examine evidence.

    A Black truck driver was attacked by a police dog in Ohio after surrendering to officers following a high-speed chase, according to body-camera video obtained by multiple news outlets.

    The violent arrest was first reported by the Scioto Valley Guardian, which obtained footage of officers after they tried to stop the driver of a tractor-trailer in Ohio on the Fourth of July because of a missing mudflap.

    Driver Jadarrius Rose, 23, repeatedly refused to pull over, and was chased for about 25 minutes before spiked bars placed across the highway brought the rig to a stop.

    State troopers in the video can be heard telling the dog’s handler, identified as Circleville K-9 Officer Ryan Speakman, not to release the animal after he arrives on the scene.

    “Do not, do not let them, don’t release the dog with his hands up,” an unnamed trooper shouts in the footage. “Do not release the dog with his hands up.”

    Speakman yells at the trucker: “Get your ass on the ground or you’re going to get bit!” It’s unclear if he hears the order not to release the dog.

    Once freed, the dog first charges toward a group of state troopers, then runs for Rose.

    “Get the dog off him!” an officer yells as the Rose is pulled to the ground.

    Rose can be heard screaming to get the dog off of him for nearly 30 seconds as it bites.

    “Please, please get it off,” he yells.

    The Washington Post reported Rose suffered significant bleeding on his arms during the attack and was treated with first aid at the scene before being taken to an area hospital. He told officers at the hospital that he had been delivering cargo to a location in Ohio and didn’t know why he was stopped.

    The Circleville Police Department told the Post it had convened a board to review the use of force. Findings will be released at the end of the month.
