    It’s been rare — to say the least — when I’ve gone to a festival where the entire weekend revolved around one headliner. It was undeniable — the palpable energy at Sea.Hear.Now 2024 as the time to watch hometown hero — Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band — perform as the Sunday night headliner.

    Spanning the two-day festival were iconic performances from the likes of Noah Kahan, Norah Jones, Trey Anastasio Band, and more…but it was clear from the beginning who this festival was about: The Boss.

    From the first moments of this year’s Sea.Hear.Now, fans were decked out in their Bruce Springsteen merch. I’ve never seen a crowd so diverse in terms of age — longtime Springsteen followers and new listeners alike flocked to Asbury Park, New Jersey to see Bruce live.

    Springsteen had not returned to Asbury Park since 2010 — when he performed an invite-only set at the Carousel House. This was the first time he played a set in New Jersey to a paying audience in decades…and The Boss didn’t disappoint.

    Sea.Hear.Now Day One: Noah Kahan Brings Stick Season To The Beach

    We rented a place in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, a few miles from Asbury Park. Saturday we opted to take the train in because it runs almost directly into the festival itself. I’d highly recommend that anyone planning on going to next year’s festival take advantage of public transportation.

    As I entered the festival on Saturday, I did what all savvy festival attendees do: bee-lined for the merch stand before all the good stuff sold out. Since I’d arrived a bit late, I was already out of luck on a number of popular items.

    I will always tell people to buy one piece of personalized merch at every concert you attend. It’s terrific memorabilia, and even better bragging rights. So, anything that states the festival lineup and location will do for me.

    What I love about Sea.Hear.Now is that it truly showcases the beauty of Asbury Park itself. Once a struggling, rundown town, Asbury Park has rebuilt and transformed itself into a mecca for music, nightlife, and the LGBTQ+ community.

    Festival performers like Joe P had amazing sets, where he performed classics like “All Day I Dream About” and “Off My Mind.” But Joe P also dropped in and played sets at local bars like Low Dive. Bruce Springsteen also played a surprise 30-minute set at the iconic Stone Pony that same Saturday night.

    I quickly ate my go-to festival dinner — a pulled pork sandwich, which is never the best or worst attempt at barbecue I’ve had — and rushed to the VIP area for Noah Kahan’s headline set.

    As always, Noah Kahan delivered a flawless performance. I’ve seen him perform his hit album, Stick Season (We’ll All Be Here Forever), numerous times now and am constantly impressed by both his vocal power and humor.

    But the VIP crowd was evidently there for Bruce. As I screamed the words along with Noah — to the horror of everyone around me — I discovered that many did not know a single song. That’s the worst part about VIP at a festival…it can be a bit stuffy.

    Sea.Hear.Now Day Two: The Boss Is Back

    By day two I was exhausted. No matter how small and cozy a festival is, there’s a lot of walking. My feet and legs ached as I woke up, but I knew I had more to go. But there was one factor motivating me, and his name is Bruce Springsteen.

    This was my first Bruce show. Growing up in New Jersey, The Boss is an absolute superhero. It’s between him and fictional character Tony Soprano for top two New Jerseyans.

    I’d heard many things about seeing the legendary E Street Band in person. Everyone knows that many artists wouldn’t be here without Bruce. And I knew what a big thing it was for him to play a hometown show for the first time in forever.

    The anticipation was electric from the beginning, but Sunday in Asbury Park felt like Christmas came early.

    Last year, the VIP section was flooded with people sitting in the food area, watching football games by the TV on Sunday. This year, the beach was packed by midday.

    As soon as you entered the festival, everyone was wearing something Springsteen-related. While Saturday brought a few Noah Kahan-faithful, Sunday was solely for Bruce.

    He popped into multiple other sets, like performing with the Trey Anastasio Band before his own headline performance. Bruce and his E Street Band were gifted a three hour slot — unheard of in most festivals.

    But it was for entirely good reason. Bruce delivered an unforgettable performance that longtime fans know in their bones is once-in-a-lifetime. Many are saying that if they never see Bruce live again, ending with that performance would be perfect.

    He played songs like “Thundercrack” for the first time since 2016 and “Asbury Park (Sandy)” for the first time since 2010. After a cover of “Twist and Shout,” he ended the concert with a piercingly resonant “Jersey Girl.”

    The band may be aging, but you cannot tell by their onstage electricity and fervor. Springsteen turns 75 years old this week, but you’d think it’s the 80s by the way he’s playing.

    And, consequently, he reminded the crowd that we cannot outlast the E Street Band. The lovemaking, earth shaking, groundbreaking E Street Band played their hearts out for three hours straight— with no break! — on the beach of Asbury Park.

    All ages came together in that one glorious moment to experience an outstanding set. It was something special to gaze around at the crowd and see everyone, old and young, having the best night of their lives. That’s what music is all about, and that’s why Sea.Hear.Now 2024 was so special.

    In terms of festivals, it doesn’t get any better than Sea.Hear.Now. Remove the uncomfy camping vibe that’s borderline abusive, and all the intensity of large-scale festivals located in remote areas…and you’ll have SHN.

    An oasis nestled in Asbury Park, New Jersey — you won’t get a better experience than a concert on the sand. With local food, an easy-going crowd, and plenty of shopping opportunities, there’s something for everyone at this festival.

    This year, Sea.Hear.Now 2024 is garnering more excitement than ever thanks to their star-studded lineup. With headliners Noah Kahan and New Jersey’s own, Bruce-The-Boss-Springsteen. Springsteen — the Sunday headline act — will have an extra-long, 3-hour set.

    We attended the festival last year, and I was most surprised by how terrific the food was. I even heard people raving about the seafood at SHN. Admittedly, I’ve only eaten one Korean corn dog in my life…but this seemed to be a pretty good intro.

    If you’re going to buy VIP tickets for any festival, this is the one where you’ll get the most bang for your buck. A guaranteed good view for Noah Kahan and The Boss, exclusive merch and food stands where you’ll have less of a line…and of course, my favorite: private bathrooms!

    Sea.Hear.Now 2024 Lineup

    Sea Hear Now

    The crowd at Sea.Hear.Now isn’t your typical festival crowd. The locals bring a certain informal atmosphere, and since there’s such a wide variety of performers, the crowd is just as diverse.

    On Saturday, Noah Kahan, The Black Crowes, Grace Potter, and Joe P are names to watch out for. Sunday features megastars like Norah Jones, Joy Oladokun, and Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band.

    Since the festival is only 2 days long, it’s more manageable than a 3 or 4-day taxing experience. While I always have the time of my life at festivals, I’m often ready to go home earlier than anticipated.

    Transportation at Sea.Hear.Now

    I definitely would not take an Asbury Uber or Lyft during this festival. Last year, I wasted hours in Ubers just sitting in traffic (I think it’s because I wasn’t staying in Asbury Park). But even if you are: don’t use a rideshare service.

    There’s a train that runs into Asbury Park itself, which I’d highly recommend. Go with the option where you won’t stuck in traffic, wishing you were home. Believe me.

    Plus, rideshare prices will surge due to demand. Our Lyft driver last year charged us close to $100 extra because she took a different route and we ended up in more traffic. A train ticket is never market-based.

    The Food

    Surf Taco

    Sea.Hear.Now features some of the best food from the Jersey Shore area. I’m addicted to Surf Taco — especially the eponymous fish taco which is a Jersey shore delicacy. Looking for food that’s absolutely delish and not just a mass-produced, high-caloric, flavorless mess? Surf Taco is for you.

    Other favorites include Dank Dogs, Local 130 Seafood, and Lobster Rolls & More. Normally, I’d warn against the seafood options at a festival…but we’re literally at Sea.Hear.Now. It’s necessary.

    Now, I’m not going to say that these food options will be the best meals in your life…or the cheapest. However, when it comes to festival life, pick your battles. Remember, the food is never the star of the weekend.

    The Drinks

    At every festival, there’ll be those random alcoholic beverage stands featuring familiar brands like Twisted Tea, Hendricks Gin, Aperol Spritz, and Tito’s.

    These booths are my favorite stops because they offer photo ops left and right, exclusive brand merch that’s super cute. Last year, the Aperol Spritz sun hats were all the rage, and don’t forget the cute cocktails.

    This year, keep an eye out for Bud Light, Mamitas, White Claw, Hendrick’s Gin, Twisted Tea, and more! I loved the Hendrick’s cocktails last year — and I’m not even a gin gal.

    The Stages

    Sea Hear Now

    It’s not easy to get lost at Sea.Hear.Now, which is good news. The festival setup is truly manageable, you can stroll around and easily find each stage without getting overwhelmed or exhausted.

    The 3 stages — the Surf Stage, Sand Stage, and Park Stage — are pretty self-explanatory. The Surf and Sand Stages are located across from one another right on the beach, while the stands are on the other side of the boardwalk.

    Then, the Park Stage is between stands and the Sand Stage. Sprinkled throughout the festival are some of Asbury Park’s most famous bars and restaurants. Across from the Surf Stage — where Bruce Springsteen will be performing — stands The Stone Pony — the iconic music venue where Springsteen launched his career.

    So, if you’re weary of the festival and simply want to rest somewhere and absorb all the fantastic sensations…there are plenty of places where you enjoy the glories that Asbury Park has to offer!

    Joe P’s Garden State Vampire

    You are crazy if you thought this album wasn’t going to make our list! We’re screaming bloody murder for Joe P because he’s our vampire crush wish come true 🩸. New Jersey may just be that girl. So many influential musicians have come from NJ like Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Whitney Houston, Lauryn Hill, and now Joe P! We are so excited to watch his fame grow and grow. 

    From his latest album, Garden State Vampire, Joe P explores themes of nostalgia, feeling like you don’t belong, and learning how to love yourself.

    One of the reasons I named the album Garden State Vampire is that I really thrive in being in a place that no one pays much attention to, instead of living in Nashville or L.A. or New York like a lot of people in the music business. It’s kind of nice to feel like I’m alone on a different planet, where the only thing that matters is staying true to whatever these songs want to be.

    SOFI TUKKER’s BREAD

    This duo is cooking up some heat in the kitchen! BREAD is an album full of every song you could ever need in a playlist. The love songs, the bangers, and the chill ones that every music lover would deem essential. Our faves are ‘Spiral,’ ‘Perfect Someone,’ and, of course, ‘Throw Some A**.’

    If there is one band in the hive that we will always listen to, it’s Coldplay. And we are sure you can say the same! Who doesn’t love Coldplay?! Their music is inspirational, relatable, timeless, and loved by all who listen.

    Every few weeks, I get the same text from one of my friends: “Jai, I need new music. I’m tired of my rotation of usual playlists.” And to be honest, a little sigh emits from my mouth every time…why? Because I have a Weekend Playlist article every. Single. Week.

    I compile all of the latest, greatest new songs that are featured on Apple Music and Spotify- covering the lesser known tunes to new Taylor Swift. Honestly, no one in my inner circle should be lost for new music because that means they’re not reading my articles and, subsequently, that would mean I need new friends.

    While your choice of streaming service may have curated playlists based on your music taste, and a plethora of other options to find music…it can be daunting, and time consuming, to go through everything and find the songs you truly want to add to your playlist. That’s where I come in.

    Each week is a different selection of songs, and I guarantee you you’ll come out of these articles with at least one new banger to play for your friends. A wide range of genres, artists, and sounds, the Weekend Playlist is meant to get you through these arduous weeks. The good news? There’s always another to look forward to.

    So, without wasting anymore of our precious time here, I’ve got a ton of music to share with you this week! Let’s get listening!

    Rosie Darling- “I’m Different Now” 

    With elements of Phoebe Bridgers, Rosie Darling has a soft, introspective voice that haunts and seeps into your soul. “I’m Different Now” exhibits her beautiful, delicate vocals and talks about the part of life where you are moving on from someone who no longer serves you. It’s looking back at a relationship that maybe wasn’t all you thought it was.

    “I’m Different Now” is about getting to the other side of a difficult relationship. What’s awesome is that even though healing is messy and scary, it paves the way for a more mature, more refined self to take the space of what once was. It is learning to sit with who you’re becoming despite knowing that your old self still lingers, almost like a ghost following you around.”

    Joe P- “Glass House” 

    Joe P has been teasing “Glass House” for a while now across social media platforms. Frequently called “Dinosaur Bones” by fans before the single was announced, “Glass House” was highly demanded…and Joe is finally answering their call. With “Glass House”, you get the classic electric guitar, alternative sound that he has spent time refining and perfecting. It’s about losing someone and finding pieces of them wherever you go, and it does not disappoint.

    “To me, this song is about the physical proof we leave behind in the wake of relationships,” says Joe P. “A lot of my friends talk about how they unfollow someone on socials because they don’t want to see them anymore. We have these little moments when we’re reminded of something/someone and that nostalgia can trick us into believing feelings still exist where they don’t.”

    Chelsea Cutler- Stellaria 

    Chelsea Cutler is our featured artist of the week with her third studio album: Stellaria. A reflection of life post-pandemic, Cutler tackles grappling with mental health and self-image, healing and love. She brings an honest approach to songwriting as she continues to grow as an artist, producer, and songwriter.

    “I had just turned 23 and COVID started. I was about to turn 26 by the time things felt more normal. It was like I fell asleep at 23 and woke up at 25, and the whole world was different. I spent a lot of time wondering, ‘Am I going to feel like myself again or a new iteration of myself?’ I tried to write a song to get reacquainted with myself and love this new person post-pandemic.”

    Lewis OfMan- “Frisco Blues” 

    If a song could be the end of the summer, it would be “Frisco Blues.” With a melancholic background track, you’ll find yourself reminiscing on old times, lost love, and the end of the season. Sampling “Frisco Disco,” all Lewis OfMan needed was an acoustic guitar to complete the track…and it’s perfect.

    “The song was inspired by a bus ride from Florence to Marseille in one day back in December 2021. We were driving across the south of France, the vibe in the bus was nice, students, kids playing cards, I was listening to an obscure Jim Morrison interview, watching the cold sunset on the hills, good spirit. A few days later I was in the countryside only with an acoustic guitar and an Ensoniq Sampler with this sample of a song called ‘Frisco Disco’ I’d found at A1 record in NYC.”

    Em Beihold- “Pedestal”

    One of both my favorite songs and artists on this list, Em Beihold delivers a cheeky breakup track centered around a ukulele sound. Her vocal range is unmatched, and her biting lyrics are contrasted by the light, acoustic-heavy track about moving on after putting someone on a pedestal for so long.

    “I’m so excited to be announcing my first ever headline tour and to also be dropping “Pedestal”this week,” says Em. “I’ve been touring “Pedestal” for a couple years now and it’s the last songof that era of music for me, so it feels full circle to announce a new beginning at the same timeas closing an old chapter. So much fun, truly 2024 couldn’t come any faster!”

    Blu DeTiger- “Cut Me Down”


    A fun upbeat collaboration between Blu DeTiger and Mallrat, “Cut Me Down” shows the difficult side of relationships. With lyrics like “every time you cut me down, I just laugh it off” and “I wonder who you think you are”, Blu DeTiger and Mallrat sing about being degraded and put down by someone who doesn’t value them. The synth-y, club beat in the background make this song suitable for nights out or long runs as well.

    “I feel like this song is a nice evolution for me and a side of me that people haven’t heard, but the soul-full chords and movement of the bassline anchor it in the Blu DeTiger sound. This is one of the most melodic and moving bass parts I’ve written, and it follows and supports the vocals in a really cool way.”

    Until The Ribbon Breaks- “Nature Mother” 

    Until The Ribbon Breaks has a soulful voice that punches into this track, an overview of our roles in society and in nature. It’s contemplative, pensive, and daunting all at the same time, combining complex metaphors with a soulful Hozier-esque tone. “Nature Mother” with Emoni Wilkins belting at the end is a masterpiece.

    “If there was a single lyric that encompassed the whole feeling that I have – and where I’ve been emotionally and why I even made this record – it’s that chorus. It specifically talks about our role in nature and our role to each other: ‘Wild is the wind. Rage is the sea. If it’s in me, it’s in me, it’s our nature mother.’

    I don’t know what’s happening this week, but you may have picked up that every living, breathing artist is releasing new music. Seriously, name a heavy hitter in the industry and they’re probably dropping a new song on August 25. Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez, and more will grace our sound systems soon enough.

    On a day that BLACKPINK, Zach Bryan, SZA, Iggy Azalea, and many, many more are releasing songs, there’s almost a guarantee that this may be my best playlist yet. The odds are, for once, in my favor and I’m confident we are pulling out a weekend playlist worthy of repeatedly listening to.

    For Ariana Grande, we are getting the 10th anniversary edition of her Yours Truly album, which was her debut. It’s been a hectic week, considering Ariana left resident evil manager Scooter Braun, who is seemingly retiring from managing in general. And while the public may be listening to “Karma” by Taylor Swift, we have a few new tracks to cover instead.

    That’s right: another weekend, another playlist. And with this much good music, we have no time to waste!

    Let’s get listening.

    Joe P- “Don’t Wanna Love U” 

    I need everyone to listen up: if there’s one song you listen to from this playlist, make it this one. Ever since I first heard it, I have replayed it at least five times daily. Stream Joe P for instant serotonin, I guess! When I interviewed him a few months ago, Joe P mentioned he was bringing his production to a studio for a bigger sound…and we got it.

    It’s a sunny, dance-y song that I bop down the street nodding my head along when listening. I’ve liked every song he’s released, but this is by far my favorite. The synth-heavy sound and tortured lyrics about not wanting to love someone who is bad for you, but loving them anyway make for a near-perfect song.

    Miley Cyrus- “Used To Be Young” 

    We’re looking forward to a potential Vol II of Miley Cyrus’ Endless Summer Vacation album just a few short months after its release. To confirm these rumors, Miley released ballad “Used To Be Young” today, and the promo has been equally exciting. With lyric posters popping up everywhere next to old lyrics from hits like “Party in the USA” and “Wrecking Ball”, everyone is referencing their different eras.

    The song itself is a hit, which is no shock when it’s from someone with the range and vocal capacity that Cyrus does. She can do any genre, any type of song, and her voice will shine through. More importantly, the song will make sense. Just like fine wine, Miley only gets better with age.

    Ariana Grande – Yours Truly

    Fans have been anticipating new music from Ariana Grande, especially since she paused for Wicked filming – a scandal studded event that dominated headlines on its own…And while we love The Good Witch, we need to hear Grande’s voice again. The Yours Truly album was Grande’s intro to music, but now she gets to put her more mature sound and production abilities into it…so big things were expected.

    We hold these singers at a high regard for a reason, it’s so easy for us to forget how hard it is to sing, songwrite, and produce. That’s why we are so harsh on the songs that aren’t so good, so when artists like Taylor Swift, Demi Lovato, and Ariana Grande rework their old albums, it’s impressive, it’s worth the listen, and it’s normally flawless.

    Selena Gomez- “Single Soon”

    Selena Gomez is making a return to music with “Single Soon”, a fun-loving, carefree track about how exciting it can be to be single. There’s been a lot of speculation about Selena’s dating life recently, which makes this song even more perfect, because it’s truly her message to us all: she’s in her IDGAF era and we’re here for it. It’s great to dance to, and just reminds me of classic Selena.

    A contrast to Miley Cyrus’ ballad, the Disney gals are showing their range. It’s good to see Selena having fun with her music, and just not listening to whatever the hell the outside world has to say.

    Zevia- “something I can’t do” 

    Zevia’s voice fills your ears like a coo, gentle and calming, beautiful and equally heartbreaking. With notes of Billie Eilish, Zevia can make a sad song feel like a hug. She makes you feel seen, putting unspoken heartache and emotion into song, “something I can’t do” is about taking away that deep depressive pain that some experience. Zevia says,

    “When someone’s been sad for a long time and bad things happen to them continuously, good things that come unexpected could be just as bad, as they’re not used to it. Sometimes depressed people pray for good, but for me even the good can be bad. I can’t allow myself peace otherwise I don’t know who I’d truly be.”

    Chloe Stroll- Pedestal 

    Our feature artist of the week, Chloe Stroll has been breaking into the music industry with her raw voice, an emphasis on the piano, and most importantly, her honest lyrics. Writing about real life experiences, “Pedestal” sums up heartbreak in any form – whether it be a friend, a significant other, or even a family member.

    A powerful follow-up to her debut single, “Run”, based on a break-in Stroll and her husband, snowboarder Scotty James, experienced. It’s a summation of Chloe Stroll: resilient in her lyrics, in the way she creates an honest track, and honest beyond measure.

    Joel Corry, Rita Ora, MK- “Drinkin” 

    Recently, I had the privilege of seeing Joel Corry live in Atlantic City. Not only does he have some of the biggest club hits right now, but he can put on an equally exciting show. Now, with a highly-anticipated debut album, Another Friday Night, is on the horizon and he’s here with yet another major collab with Rita Ora and MK.

    “Drinkin” takes the beloved sampling used in Chance the Rapper’s “Zero Problems”, and it makes you want to dance the night away. You can already hear this song shooting its way to the top of every bar playlist, it’s another soundtrack to your night out from Joel Corry. I’m convinced he’ll never disappoint, and I’m excited for the album.

    Yungblud- “Hated” 

    You can’t get much more personal than “Hated”, which is Yungblud’s recounting of being molested by a doctor as a child and dealing with internal hatred. The punk-rocker has a way of making catchy hooks and capitalizing on guitar and a hard drum that makes you release any pent-up stress and anxiety. Few times do we get to see an artist bare their entire soul into a song, and be so open and vulnerable.

    Not only is Yungblud’s song a testament for survivors of assault everywhere, he’s opening a necessary conversation about men’s mental health. It’s a mixture of anger, pain, sadness, and healing all in one.

    Audrey Nuna- “Locket”

    Audrey Nuna is a musical maverick, someone who creates larger-than-life music and it just works perfectly. For her new song, “Locket”, she is releasing a video directed by the late Valentin Petit, who tragically passed away in an aircraft accident this year. It’s the last video he ever directed, making the song that much more significant. Audrey says,

    “He was gifted in all the ways his work vividly illustrated, and with such a sense of refreshing humility towards his collaborators and crew that can often times feel rare to find in this industry. This is his final music video of this lifetime – I’m sure he’s already getting started, some place, somewhere, gathering ideas and crafting wildest and freest visions to life.”

    You’ve most likely heard – or seen – Joe P’s song “Off My Mind” on TikTok – he’s always sharing clips of him singing alone in his backyard, no matter the weather.

    A homegrown New Jersey artist, Joe P caught the attention of millions with his relatable lyrics and catchy tunes. Now, he’s back with his new EP French Blonde for a more polished sound.

    Notoriously making beats and refining records in his basement, Joe P took this body of work to the studio. With songs he’s genuinely proud of and a sound he’s constantly mastering, he’s quickly emerged as one of music’s hidden talents. His single off the EP, “All Day I Dream About,” is an upbeat pop-rock lovesick anthem with word plays on brands like Adidas.

    Having opened for a few acts already, Joe P is taking his talents on the road for his first headline tour ever set to start in April. His strong vocals and personalized promotions have already won fans over, but now we get to see him like never before. You can listen to his EP here:

    Recently, Joe P sat down with Popdust to talk about everything from his EP French Blonde and upcoming tour to his favorite things about New Jersey.

    Congratulations on your new EP, French Blonde. Your single “All Day I Dream About” is a fun play on brands like Adidas and mentions Gucci as well. What was the inspiration behind the song?

    That one, weirdly, was like the weirdest song I ever made because it just had stream-of-conscious type lyrics which I usually don’t do that much. I kind of had these lines all Frankenstein’d together and they still sort of fit well. That one is a lot of my placeholder lyrics that I just kept because I liked how unique this whole brand thing was and it’s one of my only fast songs on the album.

    How do you decide which of your songs becomes a single?

    For me, I just kind of go off what I like the best and usually, it’s the opposite of that. I usually like my slower songs that are normally 5-6 minutes long, so it just doesn’t make sense as a single. “All Day I Dream About” made sense because it was super upbeat and it had this big chorus which I usually don’t do.

    For me, a single is one to push out the overall body of work, like what this EP is. “All Day I Dream About” is a perfect mix of everything on the record regarding the sound, quality, and ideas. Obviously, every song is different, but it felt like a good way to give you a preview of the entire thing.

    What was your inspiration for French Blonde?

    The inspiration behind it was to make a departure from the way I used to record things. The way I record is usually in my basement or the Atlantic studio in New York City. The first EP I did was very much in my basement and it kind of sounds like it – it still sounds good, but I wanted more “shinier” sounds and proper sounding recording.

    The first EP is more demos I pushed a little harder into songs and these are more songs I pushed into good songs and recordings. It felt like a bump-up as far as quality goes across the board in all categories. It’s the first thing I’ve made full-on where I’m happy with everything on it, which usually doesn’t happen.

    There’s always something on a record or within songs where I’m like “ah, hate this part,” or “I wish I recorded this differently,” but I actually really like everything on this EP. I want that to be the standard moving forward.

    One of your earlier singles “Off My Mind” caught a lot of attention via TikTok. How has the app helped you reach more listeners?

    It’s the greatest and worst thing in the world because it’s weird knowing you have this tool out there that can change how many people hear your record. It’s good because it’s so easy to use, but bad because it’s so easy to get lost in. People feel like “I have to post this,” or “I have to post like this,” or “people like this video so I should make another video.”

    I try to just treat it like it’s anything else. It’s not going to help you write a better song or anything like that. I kind of view TikTok as a window into the voice memos on my phone or my notes rather than a promotional tool.

    I try to treat it as – “here’s me playing my songs, and if you like it, you like it. And if you don’t, you don’t.”

    You’ve done fun promos like sending VHS tapes of your videos or sending out handwritten lyrics. What’s been your favorite so far?

    It was the best connection that I could make with people listening to my music. At times I was literally going out, printing the posters, and slicing them myself. It was way too much work for what was coming back to it. But again, I love doing that stuff.

    Those are the things that are my favorite. I don’t know if least successful is the best word, but things that take more work and usually don’t do as much as a two-second TikTok would do. I like more personal things that go further with an individual person and aren’t going to reach as many as a TikTok video.

    A person who gets handwritten lyrics is more likely to come to a show than the person who comes across your TikTok.

    You’re looking forward to your first headline tour ever. What are you most excited about?

    I’ve always opened, so I’m just excited to not open. It’s insane. When you’re opening, you just have to win people over. It’s easy to do because they can take it or leave it anyway, so you can kind of go out there with nothing to lose. When people have paid to see you, it changes everything because now people are already like, “Hey, you’re good. We like you. Be good.” It’s very different.

    What can fans expect from a Joe P show?

    I don’t even know, that’s what’s crazy! I think it’ll be similar to what I’ve always done, but between songs, I want to give some backstory – what’s behind the song or project. Usually, you get 30 minutes to just play songs and get out of there. So I’m excited to go into the songs and what the projects stand for. Talk about stuff I never really had the chance to.

    I’ve never thought too much about the show, pre-planning. I’m just as eager to find out as the people coming, so it should be interesting.

    You mention your hometown, New Jersey, in many of your songs. What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re there?

    I really like going to the boardwalk during the winter or any time that’s not summer. There’s something about it that’s really unique to the New Jersey area. I don’t think you can get in LA, or anywhere it’s nice and warm or bright and shiny regardless of the time of year.

    In the winter in New Jersey, everything is kind of just dark and there’s like a fog over everything. It sounds terrible and that’s why people hate New Jersey, but I don’t know. I like that part of it with the ocean being right there, it kind of gives you that giant, but tiny feeling all at once.

    On your past few bodies of work, you’ve had an “Emily Can’t Sing” track, with presumably a clip of Emily singing your single. Will this become a tradition moving forward?

    I want it to be. But, it’s gonna be hard because I need to keep finding ways to trick her into not knowing I’m recording. That’s the hard part. The first one she was sleeping so it was easy. The second one she was genuinely humming and singing this song so I snuck it in.

    Now I have to keep praying for those moments when she’s humming because she’s definitely on to me. But I would definitely like to keep that as a tradition.

    What are your top two songs on French Blonde if you could pick?

    I’m gonna say the song “French Blonde” and “Kids In The Summer.” So the crazy one and the slow one.

    What’s next for you? Is another album in the works already?

    Well, I’m literally at the studio so I can’t lie about that. Yes, definitely working on a bunch of new stuff. When I’m not doing that, I’m traveling around. I’m doing some touring kicking off April 15th on the East Coast. So there’s a tour in April, and some new music probably very shortly after that. Hopefully some video stuff, but that’s really it.

    I’m in crazy creative mode right now trying to record and write songs nonstop. It’s tough because I’m interrupted by flying and balancing. I try to get stuff done in a hotel room. But it’s nice when I come to Atlantic in New York because it’s not a basement or a hotel. Those are nice in their own way, but sometimes I need to come to a nice studio solely for music.
