    The end of the year calls for reflection — hence our 2023 Popdust Music Awards, celebrating all of the great music we heard last year. And now, the beginning of the year indicates a time of anticipation. For that, we have our
    2024 Artists to Watch, which also means that Awards Season is right around the corner.

    Starting with the Golden Globes on January 7, we are about to experience countless red carpet shots, couples debuts (
    still waiting for you, Sabrina Carpenter and Barry Keoghan), and teary-eyed acceptance speeches.

    While there are the BAFTAs, the Emmys, the Oscars, and the SAG Awards, my speciality is music. And there is no bigger mecca for musicians than
    the GRAMMY Awards. Held on February 4, 2024, and hosted by comedian Trevor Noah, the GRAMMYs are music’s biggest night.

    Awards Season brings out everyone’s inner critic. Suddenly, we think we know more than the Recording Academy. Every year, there are viral moments and scandalous decisions. The Recording Academy ultimately outrages the general public in some way or another — and inevitably, fandoms will take to apps like X to become the next Joan Rivers.

    It’s a delicious time of year when your favorite celebrities are forced out of hiding and into the spotlight, and we can’t wait. To get everyone in the spirit of judgment, here are
    some way-too-early GRAMMY predictions for the year!

    Record Of The Year: “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus

    Any Kid Harpoon song is a classic, and Cyrus’ return from a brief hiatus from music was met with high marks. It was Spotify’s most streamed song in a week ever, spent time at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100, and was the fastest song in Spotify history to reach 1 billion streams.

    Album Of The Year: Midnights by Taylor Swift

    She’s won this coveted award three times already, and it’s impossible to discredit the year of Taylor Swift. She is on track for the highest-grossing tour of all time with the Eras Tour, Midnights is Apple Music’s biggest pop album of all time in terms of first-day streaming, and the album is the reason she was all 10 of Billboard’s Top 10 Songs (the first time all women have dominated the charts ever). Give Swift her flowers.

    Song Of The Year: “A&W” by Lana Del Rey

    Another Jack Antonoff production, Lana Del Rey’s album is a spiritual awakening. With an essence of transcendentalism and a hint of gospel, it’s Lana to her core. “A&W” is hailed Song of the Year by many already, and it’s time we recognize her for the artist she is, was, and always will be.

    Best New Artist: Ice Spice


    I haven’t seen many people rise to the top as quickly as Ice Spice, nor have I seen someone garner such a passionate fanbase. The rapper has hits like “Deli” and collabs with rap queen Nicki Minaj on “Barbie World” and Taylor Swift on “Karma”, not to mention her Munchkin drink at Dunkin Donuts.

    Producer Of The Year (Non-Classical): Jack Antonoff

    Not only is Antonoff the mastermind behind many Taylor Swift albums, including Midnights, but he has Lana Del Rey’s multi-nominated album, “Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Boulevard?,” under his belt. He can’t miss, and for that, he wins.

    Best Pop Solo Performance: “What Was I Made For? [From The Major Motion Picture Barbie]”

    This song is stunning, productionally perfect, and sonically flawless. Billie and Finneas continue to grow as an unstoppable singer-songwriter duo who can make any song fit any moment.

    Best Pop Vocal Album: GUTS by Olivia Rodrigo

    Olivia Rodrigo wanted to have fun with her sophomore album following the immense pressure and success of her debut, SOUR. With GUTS, we had viral singles yet again that promise Rodrigo is here for the long haul.

    Best Dance/Electronic Recording: “Strong” by Romy + Fred again…

    Developing a cult following in the electronic music world, Fred again… is one of the hottest house dance artists in the world right now. Following a successful bout of live shows and reaching fans on almost every platform imaginable, “Strong” is a winner.

    Best Pop Dance Recording: “Rush” by Troye Sivan

    Troye Sivan understands how to make out-of-the-box pop music, and seals it with one hell of a dance number. He’s the embodiment of a popstar, and “Rush” was just an example of the high precedent he’s set.

    Best Rock Performance: “Not Strong Enough” by boygenius

    Compiled of Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus, boygenius is a supergroup showing the world how to rock again. “Not Strong Enough” showcases what each member brings to the group in one sound synergy.

    Best Rock Album: Starcatcher by Greta Van Fleet

    Hailed as The Next Led Zeppelin, Greta Van Fleet brings you on a journey with their Starcatcher album. Each song a delight, Greta Van Fleet has developed their sound and found their stride.

    Best R&B Performance: “Kill Bill” by SZA

    SOS is one of the best albums of the year, and while I don’t see it winning in the Big 4 due to competitors like Swift, I still think it wins in general. “Kill Bill” was one of the biggest songs and continues to be one of the most viral.

    Best Rap Performance: “Rich Flex” by Drake & 21 Savage

    The saying “I like what Drake likes” holds true for many…and the collaboration album, Her Loss, with 21 Savage was one of the biggest of the year. “Rich Flex” makes sense for two of the biggest rappers out there right now.

    Best Rap Album: Heroes & Villains by Metro Boomin’

    Metro Boomin’ is the rapper and producer responsible for countless hits like Migos’ “Ric Flair Drip”. His Heroes & Villains album is a masterclass for high quality rap, intricate detail in production and songwriting, and straight up hits.

    I think I can speak for the collective when I say this week has felt long and arduous. I feel like I’ve used every last shred of energy saved up to even survive all the workweek, so needless to say, I’m exhausted. But, that’s not stopping me from gearing up for another week of new music.

    If you don’t know by now, we have a weekly thing going here. I round up all of these new, glorious releases every Friday and you, dear reader, run to your streaming platform of choice and listen! It’s a mutually beneficial relationship, one that I look forward to weekly.

    This week is no different, we’ve got heavy hitters coming out with new music now that the summer is essentially over. The Disney Trinity is returning to music soon: Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, and Miley Cyrus all have music coming within the next two weeks. It’s almost like it’s 2006 and I’m tuning into a Disney Channel Original Movie soon.

    And then, even further on the horizon, we have Olivia Rodrigo’s GUTS looming. But let’s not get too ahead of ourselves here, it’s only August 18! And while it may be my roommate’s birthday, it’s also a week full of new music.

    Demi Lovato – “Confident (Rock Version)” 

    Demi Lovato has one of the strongest vocal ranges in the music industry- which makes her voice perfect for rock and roll music. She’s able to hit all the notes that pierce your soul, added the heavy drumbeat and scathing electric guitar to give us the versions of her old pop songs that feel fresh. It’s apart of her new REVAMPED album, coming September 15, which features rock versions of all our fave Demi songs.

    We first saw the new rock era of Demi on her 2022 HOLY FVCK tour, and fans have been anxiously awaiting to hear Demi’s new spin on old faves. Alongside her all female band, Demi Lovato reinstates herself as the queen of genre-blending sound, a true musical genius.

    Khloe Rose – The In Between (album)

    Khloe Rose is our feature artist of the week: someone who has the ability to sing, write, and play multiple instruments deserves their own segment…especially when that someone is 19-year-old Khloe Rose. She’s created a flawless album with The In Between, which includes the title track about those in-between moments in relationships…where you can’t quite figure out what’s happening.

    It’s a refreshing feeling to have all of your emotions put into words, which is exactly what her music provides. It’s therapeutic to listen to, and her music is insanely catchy. She’s one to watch these days, if you’re a fan of artists like Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift- check out Khloe Rose.

    Icona Pop – “Fall In Love”


    Icona Pop makes music for those who are ready to let loose and have a good time. The duo has given us bangers like “I Love It (ft. Charli XCX)”, “All Night”, and “Desire” with Joel Corry, but now they’re here with “Fall In Love.” It’s the perfect taste of their new album, out September 1, CLUB ROMANTECH. “Fall In Love” feels fun, lighthearted, ethereal in ways, and makes us feel all the emotions falling in love does. Icona Pop says,

    “‘Fall In Love’ is about that moment when you fall sooo hardfor someone it’s almost like hitting a wall; you get all dizzy and almost lose touch with the ground andcan’t focus on anything else. The track is kind of an experiment for us to play around with our poppierside; we wanted to play around with mixing up our lyrics, but approach the melody almost like you wouldwith a sample, except it’s just us singing.”

    Mantra of the Cosmos – “X (Wot You Sayin?)”

    Mantra of the Cosmos is like if you assembled the Avengers of UK music and put them into a band. Consisting of successful musicians from iconic bands, this group knows what they’re doing. I mean, when you put together Shaun Ryder (Happy Mondays, Black Grape), Zak Starkey (The Who, Oasis), Andy Bell (Oasis, Ride), Bez (Happy Mondays, Black Grape) and latest members, Brix Smith of The Fall, you know you’re getting the best music.

    Their latest single “X (Wot You Sayin?) is pure fun. A refreshing drumbeat and creative lyrics meld into harmonica runs to create a genre-blended single. Every single member of this band put a little of their magic into the song, which is prevalent when you’re listening.

    Surf Mesa – “First Time (ft. Stevie Appleton)”


    Surf Mesa is making a name for himself quickly as a sought-after producer and someone who can make a banger track every single time. Ever since his essential debut with “ily (I love you baby)”, the world has been enjoying Surf Mesa’s ability to produce Beachy tracks that send you to the coast of California every time you press play. “First Time” with Stevie Appleton is classic Surf Mesa- chill, instilling within you some sort of wanderlust to be wherever the water is and the drinks are.

    Following hit singles like “Manzanita,” it’s an exciting time to be a fan of Surf Mesa. He doesn’t disappoint, giving you what you didn’t know you needed.

    What is obvious about Leith Ross’ debut album, To Learn, is that they are incredible at capturing those raw emotions many can’t put into words. It’s what sets Leith apart from the rest as a revolutionary storyteller, creating an entire album brimming with honesty. With singles like “Guts”, “We’ll Never Have Sex”, and “(You) On My Arm”, you’ll hear stories in the form of poetry – complex songs about love, loss, betrayal, friendships, and more.

    Leith Ross’ To Learn feels like a vulnerable confessional, with huge crescendos and soft words, it’s a work of art. Their latest single on the album, “Music Box” received critical acclaim across multiple platforms, garnering Leith more well-deserved respect. “Music Box” was the perfect representation of To Learn as a whole…gentle, hard-hitting, and passionate all at once.

    It’s been a huge week for Leith Ross, who just started their sold-out North American tour on May 18…and you can tell it’s only the beginning for them. Leith’s impact on the music industry will not go unnoticed. They sat down exclusively with Popdust to talk To Learn and what’s next!

    Congratulations on your new album, To Learn! What was your inspiration behind the album?

    All of my big feelings over the last couple years, really. I pretty much exclusively write from my own experience, so I suppose my life is the inspiration!

    Was creating an overall album different from the EP’s and singles you’ve done?

    Yeah, it was! It was longer and more complicated and a bit harder to plan, but on the flip side, very satisfying to finish and it’s pretty cool to have such a big finished product.

    You have great singles for the album like “Guts” and “You (On My Arm)”…how do they represent your album as a whole?

    Actually, I would say that they might be the two outliers sonically! They still fit with the record I think, but the rest of the songs are a bit closer to what I’ve released before, sad folks songs with a little extra something. That being said, the lyrical themes are always similar. Honest and vulnerable and about either very hard personal experience or very intense existential crises.

    Your latest single “Music Box” isn’t based on true events, but it feels very personal and whimsical at the same time. How do you like to incorporate storytelling into your music?

    I always try to incorporate some element of storytelling into everything I do, all my favorite music does. ‘Music Box’ is just the first time that the storytelling hasn’t been about my personal life, and I’ve gotten to create a story from scratch.

    What artists are inspiring you right now?

    Highnoon, Boy Golden, tofusmell, Ash Tuesday, Fontine, searows, Kai Warrior, and so many others, incredible artists who really feel like examples of how to make music and how to move through the world. I love them.

    What are your favorite tracks off the new album and why?

    I think my favourites are “Ask First”, “To Learn”, and “Too Much Time In My House Alone”. They all have a sense of optimism and forward movement that make me feel very happy.

    You’ve had a busy 2023 so far…with this new album and a sold-out North American tour on the horizon. What has been your favorite part about this era for you?

    Meeting so many incredible people. People are the reason for everything, people are the be all and end all for me, people are the reason I do everything! And forming meaningful, (even if they’re brief), connections with people will always be my favourite part of what I do I think!
