  • GameStop Kills ‘Infinite Money Glitch’ In Wake Of YouTube Video

    A YouTuber reportedly discovered a way to generate infinite money via a strange trade-in deal glitch at GameStop. After making a video about it, the company figured out what was going on and has now claimed to have “patched” the bug. Or maybe this is all some odd marketing stunt. Or somehow both things are true. It’s hard to say anymore.

    On January 20, video game retailer, Bitcoin investor, and Funko Pop graveyard GameStop posted a lengthy comment to Twitter about a so-called “Infinite Money Glitch” that was recently discovered by YouTube content creator RJCmedia. How the glitch worked, apparently, was that if you bought a Nintendo Switch 2 for $415 and then immediately traded it back in along with the purchase of any pre-owned game, a promo would be triggered that increased the value of the trade-in to $472. Repeat this a few times, and you could rack up a few hundred bucks in trade-in credit.

    Here’s why this glitch happened and how it worked, according to GameStop:

    “In short, our system briefly valued the pre-owned trade more than the new retail cost of the console itself, creating a narrow window where customers could repeat this transaction over and over again to amass infinite trade credit,” said GameStop on social media.

    GameStop says that “effective immediately, the glitch has been patched.” It further added that “trade promotions have been updated to ensure customers can no longer convert basic arithmetic into an endless revenue stream, and balance has been restored.”

    GameStop, a company that has become famous for memes, shitposting, spinning dumb mistakes into marketing material, and also for reportedly treating its employees poorly, ended its lengthy statement by reminding people that it remains “committed to offering promotions that reward” its customers. However, it “gently” reminded people that its stores are “not designed to function as infinite money printers.”

    So now the big question: Is this real? The video from RJCmedia seems real enough, with the creator visiting different stores and filming the process of trading in each console. There is also a bit where he is surprised to see a GameStop store closing soon and isn’t able to pull off the trade glitch there. Alluding to the news that many GameStop stores will be shutting down due to greed would likely be something the company wouldn’t want in a piece of viral marketing. There’s also nothing in the video disclosing it as a paid ad, and the creator isn’t massive, so it doesn’t seem like a person the company would partner with to do some weird guerrilla marketing. If it seems odd that I’m spending this much time dissecting whether or not this is real, it’s because GameStop is a very weird company these days, and you gotta be careful out there.

    Anyway, I think this is all real, though the statement from GameStop is clearly trying to make this a fun situation, which reminds me of the stapler incident from last year. I hope others out there got to take advantage of this strange bug. Power to the players and all that, you know?

  • Borderlands 4’s Big Jump Glitch Is Wild And Won’t Be Patched

    A newly discovered bug in open-world looter shooter Borderlands 4 is letting players use a specific legendary gun to fling themselves across large sections of the game’s map. It looks wild and could be useful for speedrunners. But Gearbox is watching the glitch and might, if needed, fix it to avoid technical problems.

    On September 19, Twitch streamer and content creator Bahroo shared a video of himself playing Borderlands 4 while pulling off a technique known online as “Cricket Jumping.” The bug relies on a legendary handgun known as the “Noisy Cricket” and its powerful kick, which sends players flying backward. The gun itself is a reference to the tiny gun with the same name seen in the ’90s sci-fi comedy film Men In Black. Normally, this isn’t the most useful trait. But if you tab out or pause the game at the right time while charging up a shot with the Noisy Cricket, you can send yourself flying for miles. It’s wild to watch in action.

    Cricket Jumping has been a known bug since at least September 16, as demonstrated in this short video uploaded by YouTube user Platinum. But it wasn’t until Bahroo and other bigger streamers and creators began sharing videos of the technique that it caught on more and became more publicly known. And that attention eventually got Cricket Jumping spotted by Borderlands 4′s creative director Graeme Timmins. While you might assume someone from Gearbox would not be happy about this bug, Timmins seemed open to not patching it out, provided it doesn’t break the game.

    “I’ve got my eye on this,” replied Timmins to a video of the bug on Twitter. “My only worry is streaming issues or if this introduces instability. Not out to ruin people’s fun, but can’t have it cause tech issues. For now, tho, not going to do anything until proven issues arise.”

    So for now, it seems like Gearbox is going to let people Cricket Jump all around Kairos, assuming it doesn’t ruin the game for other players or introduce some nasty, less cool bug. Besides, I imagine Gearbox has a lot more to fix in Borderlands 4 right now, like horrible console performance problems, and isn’t too concerned about a silly super jump bug.

    Glitches are just a part of gaming, but there are different levels. The best are the helpful glitches that give you an unintended edge, but those aren’t great for multiplayer.

    The worst is when a glitch only gives your opponent the edge, and only you suffer. Call of Duty Warzone is currently experiencing the latter in the new Urzikstan map that arrived with Season 1 that everyone should know about.

    A clip is circulating Reddit that shows a player on the train who is somehow invincible despite the gunfight happening in an enclosed space. The player capturing the clip dies without any damage seemingly happening to the enemy player. There are plenty of comments bringing up Warzone’s long history with awful hitboxes on trains as a possible culprit. That would perhaps lend itself to other players speaking up about encountering this same thing.

    With that in mind, it’s hard to call this glitch intentional, as it could just come down to some train-related performance issues. Because of that, we can’t exactly guarantee you’ll run into this every time. However, that doesn’t detract from the main point of avoiding the train for safety. After all, the train can’t get you if you never step foot on board.

    The bad news is that, at this moment, there isn’t anything on the Warzone Trello board that suggests the developers are aware of this glitch/train issue. This means it could be a decent amount of time before the train becomes a legitimate loot spot instead of some sort of unfair playing field.

    We will continue to monitor this situation, and hopefully, things will be fixed before long, so you won’t potentially have to fight the Terminator on board a moving train. In the meantime, I guess we’re only on foot or in a vehicle.

    Now that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is finally out in the wild, players are finding all of its cool moments and comic book Easter eggs. But a bunch have encountered something much more unexpected: a glitch that turns Spider-Man into a little white lump of tofu.

    It’s not technically tofu per se, but that’s certainly what some players think it looks like. The strange bug sees a small cube you might associate with early development prototyping completely replace the titular superhero’s body. Spider-Block as some are calling it (me, I’m calling him that) can still do all the amazing things the neighborhood web-crawler normally does, like web-slinging through New York and comboing bad guys skyward. The weird glitch transforms the experience from cool comic book stuff to extra-surreal fever dream.

    Social media is already full of players encountering the cube glitch:

    Despite the bug’s prevalence, no one really seems to be sure exactly what causes it. The tofu slabs just appear any time either Peter Parker or Miles Morales’ suit model fails to load. Then it’s cube time. You can fix it by going back to the suit menu and swapping to a different costume. It’s smart to do that quickly, too, since there are reports of some cubed players falling through the map after their unexpected transfigurations. Perhaps therein lies a portal to the blockverse, but your best bet is just to reload from the last checkpoint if that happens.

    Fortunately, my 40-hour experience with Spider-Man 2 was mostly bug free, though some players have reported game crashes or occasionally getting stuck on parts of the environment. A few players have even reported being unable to play the disc version of the game at all, with installations getting stuck at 36 percent. Insomniac Games hasn’t yet provided an official workaround, though the issue doesn’t seem to be too widespread. Hopefully it gets solved soon so those players can also experience the glory of Spider-Block.

    It’s beautiful when video games break. It can also be incredibly fun for players, and a nightmare for developers in charge of making sure everything keeps humming along without issue. Over the weekend, Destiny 2 players discovered a wonderful glitch that let them craft god-like weapons and tear through challenging end-game missions with ease. Days later, Bungie is still trying to put the genie back in the bottle.

    Destiny 2 is a sci-fi MMO shooter built around collecting rare, magical guns and using them to complete cosmic gauntlets with ever-increasing efficiency and grace. This “grind” can at times feel like running on a treadmill, and Bungie spends a ton of time and resources trying to calibrate the variations in speed and incline to make it challenging and rewarding rather than tedious. Balancing the game’s hundreds of weapons is a big part of that, with minute changes to perk descriptions or numerical values leaving huge marks on the overall shape and trajectory of the experience.

    Destiny 2’s bizarre weapon crafting glitch

    On September 15, a new crafting glitch started making the rounds on social media and various Destiny 2 subreddits. It effectively allows players to create a new weapon with any set of perks they want by slowing down the game and swapping screens quickly. On PC, players put the framerate down to 30fps to increase the window of time to pull off the exploit, while console owners initiated massive file installs in the background to create a similar amount of lag. The result was the ability to create bows that fire grenades and auto rifles that shoot shotgun shells, each with mixes of some of the most powerful perks from standard legendary ones like Chill Clip to unique Exotic perks from guns like the Dead Messenger grenade launcher and Osteo Striga submachine gun.

    These broken builds quickly started proliferating in various modes. In dungeons and raids it allowed players to clear encounters and demolish bosses in record time. In competitive PvP like Trials of Osiris, however, it gave players incredibly unfair advantages, and made it easy to essentially glitch your way into some of Destiny 2’s most coveted accomplishments—like flawlessly going through an entire Trials run (without losing). Many in the community assumed Bungie would roll back the game to remove the glitch and anything players had gained from using it. Instead, the studio gave players its blessing to have fun while it worked on a fix.

    “We’re aware of an issue that allows specific weapon perks to be crafted into other legendary weapons and are investigating a fix, which will result in these weapons being reset in the future,” the studio announced on Twitter on September 15. “We currently don’t have any plans to disable Trials of Osiris due to this issue.”

    How Bungie is fixing the Destiny 2 weapon-crafting bug

    Instead of banning players who gained in-game rewards or achievements using the exploit, Bungie revealed the next day that it would work on deploying two fixes. The first would be a server-side update to disable players from using any crafted weapons. The second would reset the “illegal” weapons back to their defaults.

    “This is a complex issue, and as a result of testing, our original timeline for a server-side fix has been extended,” Bungie tweeted on September 17. It disabled the Osteo Striga, Revision Zero, Dead Man’s Tale, Dead Messenger, Vexcalibur, and Exotic class glaives, but over 72 hours later is still working on the second half of the fix to bring everything back online. “Please refrain from asking your local Destiny 2 triage developers how their weekend was,” Joe Blackburn, the game’s director, joked on Monday.

    Bungie even leaned into the chaos with a Ted Lasso TikTok meme encouraging everyone to go ahead and “live.” In response, the top comment reads, “The biggest glitch in Destiny’s history and Bungie is letting us have…..fun?”

    Word of the loot party clearly spread, because Destiny 2’s concurrent player spiked over the weekend on Steam. Where it had been peeking around 80,000 in the last few weeks, it cracked 100,000, a number usually reserved for seasonal updates. While the glitch has likely sent the team into crisis mode and no doubt ruined several developers’ weekends, the unexpected bonanza has also been a bright spot for a game that’s been caught in a bit of a malaise as its pivotal The Final Shape expansion arrives ahead of Destiny 2’s 10-year anniversary. The integrity of the game and its loot chase may have been fundamentally undermined, but at least for the moment anyway, players had a blast.

    The most recent The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom patch seems to have done away with a few popular glitches, a Reddit post suggests. Nintendo issued update 1.2.0 on July 5 in order to “improve the gameplay experience,” it wrote in its patch notes, and to burn through your infinite money reserves, apparently.

    “The autobuild frozen meat glitch was patched,” a Reddit user said. “Good thing I turned off automatic updates on my Switch a few days ago.”

    As Kotaku senior editor Luke Plunkett previously reported, the “frozen meat glitch” allowed you to “trick the game into giving you loads of valuable resources by turning big hunks of meat into a weapon, then taking that weapon with you to the snow.” That’s the short of it.

    The elaborate process involved attaching meat onto sticks and using “autobuild to ctrl+c, ctrl+v until you’ve built 21 meat clubs (the most the game can remember and place at any one time) and fused them all together,” Plunkett writes. Then, once you’ve retreated to and rested in a snowy area with your meat, it would freeze. You’d wake up to a beautiful bundle of frozen meat, or a 39,960 rupee value.

    Not anymore, though. Say goodbye to your grill plans.

    A ToTK duplication glitch might be gone, too

    Update 1.2.0 also seems to remove the Tobio’s Hollow glitch, which let players duplicate their items in the late-game area Tobio’s Hollow Chasm.

    Officially, 1.2.0 makes one general update and a few bug clean-ups. According to Nintendo’s patch notes, players who downloaded the update can expect these changes:

    • “Starting the game from within certain articles released on a specific Switch News channel (accessed via the HOME Menu) [will give players] a number of in-game items.”
    • “Downloading the update will allow players [experiencing bugs] to proceed past […] points” in quests like “A Mystery in the Depths” and “Lurelin Village Restoration Project”
    • “Fixed an issue preventing fairies from appearing under certain conditions when they originally should have appeared.”
    • “Fixed an issue preventing the meals provided by Kiana of Lurelin Village from changing under certain conditions.”

    The Switch News channel update seems intriguing, though it will unlikely be a true replacement for 21 pieces of free meat. But while Nintendo is aggressive in bandaging every possible glitch, bug, and exploit, glitch hunters are determined. And Zelda has more secrets to offer, I’m sure.

    Players have spent the last couple of weeks doing all kinds of wild stuff in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, from stacking weapons to amassing small fortunes off glitched items. And the whole time many wondered if Nintendo would take notice or let it slide. Now we know the answer: The company went berserk in the latest update and patched out all of the most powerful exploits.

    Pushed live on May 25, version 1.1.2 is light on patch notes but heavy on bug fixes. Tears of the Kingdom’s array of duplication glitches were the first to be fixed, but players soon realized the update hadn’t stopped there. Fan-favorite techniques like the “Autobuild Cancel Slide,” “Weapon State Transfer” and “Zuggling” had also been patched. What the heck were these tricks? I’m glad you asked.

    “Zuggling” referred to standing next to a wall and continually dropping and picking up bows to stack glitched attack power onto weapons. The incredibly powerful trick made it possible to one-hit Gleeoks, Tears of the Kingdom’s challenging three-headed dragon mini-bosses.

    Autobuild Cancel Slide, meanwhile, requires the Autobuild ability. Players simply attached two items together using the Ultrahand ability, separated them again, and then tapped the Y and B buttons back-to-back very quickly to jam up the build menu and let Link fly around on wooden boards like they were magic carpets.

    Another very popular glitch was called “Master Sword Smuggling.” It required players to go to a precise location on the map and essentially transfer the Master Sword between save files. It’s an absolutely wild bug that makes the weapon unbreakable. It definitely broke the game but was also not the simplest exploit in the world to pull off. A super Master Sword seemed like an appropriate reward for those who discovered the trick and shared it around.

    Many of the glitches centered around dropping items and messing with menus, it’s possible Nintendo was able to patch them all by addressing a few specific ways the underlying game worked. “Darn, sad to see them go, but honestly I can’t blame the devs, they were way too OP,” tweeted one player.

    Fortunately, the developers didn’t nuke all of Tears of the Kingdom’s glitches yet. Traversal techniques like the infinite jump and Tulin paraglider speed glitch are still operational. So too is the spear recall trick where players used loose planks of wood and spears to launch Link into orbit. It seems to be the result of the underlying way the game’s objects and physics systems interact, so hopefully it will be harder to patch out.

    And even if it does get nuked, Tears of the Kingdom players are an industrious lot. If Breath of the Wild is any indication, glitch hunters will have their hands full for years to come.

    Nintendo just updated The Legend Of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to version 1.1.2, and while the company’s official patch notes don’t mention it, users are reporting that many of the game’s notorious (and handy!) duplication glitches have been removed.

    As we’ve reported, there have been a few ways found for players to get easy access to loads of resources and items in the game and even stack power-ups, but it appears that at least some of those are now gone as part of the patch.

    Nintendo’s official notes only mention:

    Ver. 1.1.2 (Released May 25, 2023)

    Audio Bug Fixes

    – Fixed an issue where the sound would play at an extremely high volume in certain conditions.

    Additional Fixes

    – Fixed an issue in the main quest, “Camera Work in the Depths”, where players could not progress beyond a certain point. Downloading the update will allow players to proceed past that point.

    – Several issues have been addressed to improve the gameplay experience.

    Anyone used to Nintendo’s vague patch notes won’t be surprised by this, but that “Several issues have been addressed to improve the gameplay experience” line can sure cover a lot of ground.

    Users are reporting in this Reddit thread that various duplication glitches are no longer working, while our own internal testing has found that the paragliding one in particular has also been affected.

    Because more of these glitches were being discovered seemingly every day, we don’t yet know if all of them have been patched out, or if there are still some lying undiscovered in the game waiting to be exploited. But if using these workarounds has made life easier for you, and you want to keep doing it, you might want to disable auto-updates for your console/game if you still have time to do it (if you hadn’t already by the time you’re reading this you might be too late, sorry!)
